He has also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, the National Theatre Prague; La Monnaie Brussels; the Salzburger Festspiele; Hamburgische Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, the Lucerne Festival and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Staples has staged Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Cenerentola and La bohème in London, at the Jordan Music Festiavl, Musique Cordiale in Provence and the Menton Festival. His celebrated semi-staging of Die Zauberflöte for the Lucerne Festival, conducted by Daniel Harding culminated in a full staging in Stockholm's Drottningholm Palace Theatre with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Andrew believes firmly in the evolution of cultural content for screen. Bringing his experience on stage both as a performer and director, he has made a series of music films. Aiming to bring cinematic techniques and rigour to the pre- and post-production phase of his projects, his films aim to capture the thrill of live performance and present it to an audience on screen who desire something more than an archive or stream of the event. The potential to create and evolve in this space is huge and he enjoys the opportunity to collaborate with artists, organisations and cultural broadcasters. In 2021 he received the Royal Philharmonic Society Enterprise Fund Trailblazer Grant, presented in association with Harriet's Trust, in order to support and advance the making of such music films. As a photographer, Staples' work has been featured in the Times, The Evening Standard, Lawyer Magazine, the front cover of The Strad, the BBC Music Magazine, various CD cover images, The National Portrait Gallery's magazine and a number of artist's and ensembles photographs including Tim Mead, Mary Bevan, the Borodin Quartet, The King's Singers, The Gabrieli Consort and Players and Voces8. Music for St. Cecilia's Day

Synopsis Today is the Feast Day of St. Cecilia, an early Christian martyr. Her story dates back to Roman times, when the new religion was still punishable by death. It wasn't until the 15th century, however, that St. Cecilia became the patron saint of music and musicians. Over time her Feast Day came to be celebrated with special works composed in her honor, all extolling the power of music. Of these, pieces by three British composers are the most famous. In the 17th century, Henry Purcell wrote four cantatas, or “Odes” for St. Cecilia's Day. The most famous of these, entitled “Hail! Bright Cecilia!” was written in 1692. The British poet John Dryden, a contemporary of Purcell's, wrote two poems in praise of St. Cecilia. These attracted the attention of the great British composer of the following century, George Frederick Handel. The first of these, “Alexander's Feast” premiered in 1736, oddly enough not on St. Cecilia's Day, but proved so popular that Handel set Dryden's other Ode to St. Cecilia, entitled “From Harmony, Heavenly Harmony,” and performed both pieces on today's date in 1739. The great 20th century British composer, Benjamin Britten was actually born on St. Cecilia's Day in 1913. In the early 1940s, the British poet W.H. Auden wrote a piece entitled "Anthem for St. Cecilia's Day" especially for Britten, who set it to music in 1942. Music Played in Today's Program Henry Purcell (1659 – 1695) — Hail Bright Cecilia! In the next eight years he made a dozen recordings on the BMG label (including a grammy nomination), and gave more than 900 performances in almost every major concert venue in the world. Special collaborative projects saw him working and performing with some of the world’s most respected artists, including percussionist Evelyn Glennie, pianists Emmanuel Ax and George Shearing, singer Barbara Hendricks and ‘Beach Boy’ Bruce Johnston. Since moving to the USA in 2005, first to run the choral program at DePauw University in Indiana, and now at Princeton University, he has built an international profile as a conductor and director, with recent engagements in China and Australia as well as Europe and the United States. In 2008 he was appointed musical director of the British early music ensemble ‘Gallicantus’, with whom he has released four recordings under the Signum label to rapturous reviews, garnering ‘Editor’s Choice’ accolades inGramophone and Early Music Review, and, for the 2012 release ‘The Word Unspoken’, a place on BBC Radio’s CD Review list of the top nine classical releases of the year. When the academic calendar allows, Gabriel maintains parallel careers in singing and record production, crossing the Atlantic frequently to appear with such ensembles as Tenebrae and The Gabrieli Choir, and in the US, performing recitals of lutesong with such acclaimed lutenists as Daniel Swenberg and Nigel North. As a producer his latest credits have included Winchester Cathedral Choir, The Gabrieli Consort and Tenebrae. His achievements in the choral world have led to many invitations to adjudicate choral competitions, notably the mixed choir final of ‘Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year’ (televised by the BBC). His work as a singer, coach and musical director has led to his name appearing in the London Times’ list of ‘Great British Hopes’. Sometimes a perceived set-back is really the best way forward. There is so much gold in this early two-part episode that it’s worthwhile to spotlight it now. In this segment, Gabriel discusses his upbringing in a musical family, and his early ambivalence towards music, even while entering Cambridge on a music scholarship. He goes on to recount a less-than-stellar first year at DePauw University, where he was learning to conduct on the job. It’s ultimately uplifting, as Gabriel and Ryan go on to discuss how our failures make us better. Listen: Highlight to Tweet: “Brahms studied counterpoint every day of his life.
