John Sheppard is a Sustainability Consultant and Technical director of Wren Sustainable Limited. He believes that government initiatives to help households become more sustainable are “a joke” and he tells us why on Agenda. While government has legislation requiring it to deliver on carbon reduction targets, it seems that legislation is limited on requiring government agencies to help people reduce their energy needs. It certainly makes financial sense for us all to better insulate our homes and reduce energy bills so why aren't more of us doing this? Is there real substance behind the government green wash?

The government has set clear targets to decarbonise the Manx economy over the coming decades. Solar power and onshore and offshore wind look like the best available renewable energy generation prospects but are there alternatives? The Chief Minister doesn't seem convinced but Graham Fox-Hulme tells us that the answer lies beneath our feet and John Sheppard wants draconian measures introduced to help us lead better lives. Are they right? Is geothermal energy really readily available and if so why is it not being explored? Why aren't we building houses that use a tiny fraction of the energy to heat?

Synopsis In December of 2020, during the first, bleak winter of the worldwide Covid pandemic, The New York Times ran a story about the English Renaissance composer John Sheppard, who, as a member of the Chapel Royal, the household choir of the English monarchs, was buried in London on today's date in 1558.Shepard lived during the turbulent English Reformation, and as a church musician composed liturgical works in both English and Latin, probably reflecting whether the Protestant king Henry the Sixth or the Catholic Queen Mary the First was seated on the throne. We know little about Sheppard's life and nothing about his own religious inclinations. His most famous work, an elaborately polyphonic compline setting of a Latin text, “Media vita in morte sumus” (In the midst of life we are in death), might have been written for the funeral for a fellow composer who died from what was called the “new ague,” a pandemic that swept England in 1557, and returned the following year in a devasting second wave, killing one in ten Londoners. One of them was John Sheppard. He died just after the strain claimed Reginald Pole, the archbishop of Canterbury, and probably Queen Mary as well. As an entrepreneur, be upfront, be honest, be able to talk through what challenges you've had and are likely to have going forward. How does beer brewing work… and just how important are the different ingredients in determining the final flavor of the brew? We address these questions and others with Dr. John Sheppard, a professor of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences at North Carolina State University. We also discuss brewing tasty sour beers with a wild yeast found in the guts of some wasps and bumblebees! Unlike typical brewers yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the Lachanacea yeast has the unique ability to not produce ethanol, but also lactic acid, which gives it a distinctive sour flavor. #Beer #Yeast #Brewing

John Sheppard's 30-year career has prepared him well for the calamities of 2020. So, when the Sykes College of Business at the University of Tampa wanted a seasoned executive to talk about managing through a crisis, Sheppard got the call. In the 1990s, Sheppard was about a week into his new job as president of Coca-Cola’s European Division when the company was forced to recall over 15 million bottles of Coke after it was suspected of making over 100 school children sick. The largest product recall in history began to unfold, and he was at the center of it. Every company experiences crises. And whether it’s a worldwide pandemic or a temporary manufacturing glitch, the fundamentals of crisis management are the same. John weathered that early crisis and went on to have a successful career at Cola-Cola spanning nearly two decades. Today, he is the CEO and president of OttLite Technologies, a company that makes LED lights calibrated reduce eyestrain and improve wellness. They’re also preparing to launch a product that uses light to sanitize surfaces. OttLight has faced multiple crises on several fronts starting in 2018 when it fell victim to a fraud scheme involving its China-based manufacturer. Then its biggest customer cut its inventory by 70%. Then it got hit by Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports. And then came coronavirus. One might call this a perfect storm of crises. But John’s early experiences prepared him well. John Sheppard, MD, MMSc, and Jennifer Loh, MD, join Marguerite McDonald, MD, FACS, to discuss obstacles to increasing premium IOL volume and how to overcome them.

In this Nighttime Classic, Randy and I revisit the 2014 Kensington PEI UFO Event (originally covered Jan 2016) Episode Summary When Moncton resident John Sheppard arrived at The Twin Shores Campground near Kensington PEI, he never would have imagined he would be avoiding one of the worst mass murders in his province's history and stepping into an entirely different battle ground he hardly knew existed. While putting out the bonfire late in the evening of June 4, 2014, John witnessed unusual lights in the sky over the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and captured 22 minutes of it on his cellphone. When CBC covered the sighting, which was investigated and labeled a "confirmed unknown flying object", skeptics fired back with alternate explanations prompting CBC to produce a follow up article the next day. This episode includes both John Sheppard who describes the event and UFO researcher, author, and pilot Don Ledger who provides his opinion on the other proposed theories. Daisy: You’ve often spoken about preferring to write Character Driven stories as opposed to Plot Driven ones. Could you describe the difference between them and what they actually mean, please? Because your characters need to have something to do – plot points – so what makes it character driven rather than plot driven? Jeckisa Lynn: You and Ladyholder talked in that episode about how Harry is different in Courting Hermione Granger vs. other stories, particularly Soulmate Bond due to the influence of his mother in the former. How do you think John Sheppard and his brothers would be different if their mother hadn't died while they were young? Or if Patrick remarried while they were still growing up? How would it impact their relationships with each other and with Patrick? I know in Ties That Bind he has been with Jonah for a long time, but to my memory he began that relationship when the boys were older. Also, the influence of a woman parent is in some ways just fundementally different (no better or worse obviously, just different). Chatroom: http://keiramarcos.com/chat-room/

Jilly and I will be plotting during the podcast. Participation in the chatroom is welcome BUT don't be an asshole so if the Drifter says no to your idea -- do not keep harping on it.What does "plot drift" mean? It means I give myself or a guest a prompt and they plot on the fly without any prep. This will open up their thought process and allow you to learn how to explore and build a plot yourself in a very organic way.You do not have permission to use this plot for your own writing. Period.http://keiramarcos.com/chat-room/

John Sheppard stumbles through the forest, hungry and alone. His friends have abandoned him, his survival is in his own hands now. He freezes suddenly. He turns his head sharply to the right. Screaming? That was definitely screaming. He sprints toward the sound, pointy green bushes scratch and claw at him as he runs past. The terrified yelling gets louder and louder until he finally breaks through the foliage into an open field. Sheppard drops to his knees. His eyes glow, expressing a state of bewildered awe. Standing before him is the most perfect human specimen he has ever seen. A man, dressed in a loose white shirt, smiles back at him. "Greetings stranger," he says, "my name is Howie Brendan."
In this episode we talk all about The Intruder. Get those laugh muscles ready for some good good goofs about 2001: A Space Odyssey, desaturated flashbacks, and John Sheppard's secret bigotry.Episode Link
