The most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America struck 75 miles south of Anchorage in March 1964. More than 130 people lost their lives in the temblor and the subsequent tsunamis. The state's largest city endured major damage to buildings, property, and infrastructure. Kodiak, Seward, Valdez, and the village of Chenega were among the places severely damaged by rising waters. The event forever changed how Alaska monitors and prepares for dangerous seismic threats. GUESTS Gary Watson (member of the Sun'aq Tribe of Kodiak), board member of the Kodiak Area Native Association Fred Christoffersen (member of the Valdez Native Tribe), elder Christina “Tina” Hoen (member of Lesnoi Village), Kodiak resident Mike West, state seismologist for Alaska

Overview Confessions of a Knight Errant is a comedic, picaresque novel in the tradition of Don Quixote with a flamboyant cast of characters. Dr. Gary Watson is the picaro, a radical environmentalist and wannabe novelist who has been accused of masterminding a computer hack that wiped out the files of a major publishing company. His Sancho Panza is Kharalombos, a fat, gluttonous Greek dancing teacher, who is wanted by the secret police for cavorting with the daughter of the Big Man of Egypt. Self-preservation necessitates a hurried journey to the refuge of a girls' camp in rural Texas. Then a body turns up nearby that is connected to Middle East antiquities, and they are on the run once more. Gretchen McCullough was raised in Harlingen Texas. After graduating from Brown University in 1984, she taught in Egypt, Turkey and Japan. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama and was awarded a teaching Fulbright to Syria from 1997-1999. Her stories, essays and reviews have appeared in The Barcelona Review, Archipelago, National Public Radio, Story South, Guernica, The Common, The Millions, and the LA Review of Books. Translations in English and Arabic have been published in: Nizwa, Banipal, Brooklyn Rail in Translation, World Literature Today and Washington Square Review with Mohamed Metwalli. Her bi-lingual book of short stories in English and Arabic, Three Stories from Cairo, translated with Mohamed Metwalli was published in July 2011 by AFAQ Publishing House, Cairo. A collection of short stories about expatriate life in Cairo, Shahrazad's Tooth, was also published by AFAQ in 2013. Currently, she is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Rhetoric and Composition at the American University in Cairo. Book Website http://www.gretchenmccullough.wix.com/gretchenmccullough Favorites YouTube https://youtu.be/3ff8O98jt3E Transcript Stephen: So today on Discovered Word Smith I have Gretchen McCullough and you may notice if you're on YouTube watching the episode that there's no video because Gretchen is not. Anywhere in this hemisphere of where I'm at or at least I should say this continent. So we had a bit of a spotty connection and we turned off video to make sure we could hear everything. So Gretchen, welcome. How are you doing today? I'm Gretchen: doing great. Thanks for having me on your show. Stephen: Yeah. And I'm excited. So let's jump right into that before we start talking about your book. Tell us a little bit about you. And where you are at the moment. Gretchen: I'm sitting in my bedroom and it's dark outside. It's quite noisy. I live in a really busy part of Cairo. And yeah. That's where I am. It's across the Nile from Tahrir Square where a lot of Americans probably are familiar with Tahrir Square because of the uprising. It's not that far from the square. It's a huge island called Zamalek. And you can walk everywhere in this area. You don't really need a car. It's a neat burrow. There are lots of coffee shops. Yeah. Stephen: Nice. What, why what brought you to Cairo? Gretchen: It's a long odyssey. I taught in Egypt in the 1980s and then I taught in Turkey and then I taught in Japan. And then I went and got an MFA from the university of Alabama. And I had a Fulbright in Syria in 1997 to 99. And. I went back to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a year and a friend of mine said, there's a job in Cairo. You're perfect. Why don't you apply? And I did. And I got the job at the American university in Cairo in 2000. And I've been here ever since. Stephen: Gretchen, where are you originally from? Gretchen: I'm originally from Harlingen, Texas. It's called the Rio Grande Valley. It's near the Mexican border, near Brownsville. It's the very tip of Texas. That's where I grew up. I'm from a very small town. Stephen: Big change. Gretchen: Yes. I wanted to get out of that town in 1980 and I didn't realize how far I would go.

1 year ago, I happened to record a rare conversation between three Drag Racing Legends.  This fly on the wall recording features: Gary Watson (Texas Wheelstand King), Randy Curtis (Fugitive Corvette), and Carl Magee (Flying Red Baron). In the late 1960's through 1970's these three drivers built and raced high powered exhibition wheelstanders.  These crowd favorites would routinely run side by side quarter mile passes on two wheels, showering sparks, and entertaining thousands with their driving feats. This recording is unedited and simply a interesting trip down memory lane for 3 drivers that traveled the US, Canada, and Mexico, putting on drag racing shows over nearly two decades. There are several interesting interludes as the drivers discuss Randy Curtis' accident in 1979, as well as a host of travel and racing related stories.  In particular, listen for the various interactions with other legendary drag racers of the era.For fans of drag racing, this is a glimpse back into an era when drivers were car owners, builders, crew chiefs, and architects of their own racing businesses.

I really enjoyed this interview.  In the late 1950's, early 1960's, a rare breed of automotive hot rodders were born.   One of the greatest of these is a man named Gary Watson.  Gary raced A-Fuel dragsters back in the 1960's and ultimately went on to build and innovate exhibition race cars call "Wheel standers."  These were high power race cars designed to entertain drag racing fans with 1/4-mile wheel stands.  Have you even run your car up to 120 mph?   Remember that thrill and excitement of speed?  Imagine doing that on two wheels, door to door with a competitor.... that's wheel standing during the barnstorming days of the 1960's-1970's.Gary Watson, now 83 years old, was a mentor of my father, Randy Curtis, another of the OG Wheel standing driver cadre from the same era.  I always love hearing stories from their racing careers.   Traveling all over the country, into Canada and even Mexico, Gary Watson was the consummate showman.  Gary ran multi-car racing operations and taught his drivers to always strive to remember why they are driving, to make a living and entertain their customers.  Gary always had a talent for innovating the business of racing and giving the fans a great show. This interview traces back over the touchpoints in Gary's career as a racer.  Even if you are not a race-fan or nostalgic drag racing buff like me, Gary's career is an example of what it takes to be successful in anything.I especially enjoyed the pearls Gary shared during this interview on preparedness, not just for racing but in life generally.Gary was warm, and gracious with his time.  He is a great storyteller and is a huge reservoir of racing experience and automotive racing history.I hope you will enjoy this interview with Gary Watson, The Texas Wheelstand King.

It's an absolute honour to be joined by The Lapelles' Chris Ballantyne, Jack Anderson, Jamie Holmes and Leon Green. The Lapelles are, in my opinion, the seminal Scottish band of the 2010s. In their short time together, the boys, alongside their best friend and frontman, Gary Watson, reinvigorated the Scottish music scene with their distinctive brand of indie rock and infectious personality, paving the way for the incredible wave of successful acts that followed them. As many will know, Gary sadly passed away in August of 2016. Although the boys themselves recognise it wasn’t the album they were going to make, The Lapelles released their eponymous album in March of 2017 as a tribute to Gary, and it received universal acclaim. Gary was and remains a hero and icon to music fans across the UK. If you’re an avid listener of TELT or have even listened to the odd episode, you’ll no doubt have heard The Lapelles mentioned frequently. The influence these 5 boys have had on not only their friends and contemporaries but on a generation of aspiring musicians cannot be understated, and they have firmly cemented themselves as one of the most influential Scottish acts since the turn of the millennium. In this episode, we speak in detail about The Lapelles journey from East Kilbride teenagers to one of the most exciting artists to emerge from the UK over the past 10 years. We discuss growing up in East Kilbride & it's influence on their music, songwriting, Postcard Records & Orange Juice, famous headline shows at the 13th Note & Club Sabbath at the Priory, The Spaghetti Factory, 'Seventeen' getting played at half speed on the radio, support slots with The Last Shadow Puppets, The Kooks, Blossoms & The View, 'Grab Life By,' T in the Park, headline tours, friendship, Tenement TV Session, the album, legacy, the future of The Lapelles, what everyone's up to now and, of course, Gary Watson.

Alan Dein meets the modern residents of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. While the recorded history of of the place can be traced back to the 6th century and includes the followers of St. Aiden and St Cuthbert, the current residents try to maintain a way of life that has existed for hundreds of years. Where the monks of Lindisfarne had contend with the Vikings and the Reformation, today's residents face an annual invasion of half a million tourists. With the help of residents - both young and old - Alan Dein explores their options... whether they should stay on island and keep the old industries going, or leave and discover what the wider world has to offer. Fishermen Andrew and Stuart Johnson, farmer Alison Brigham and retiree Brian Paterson have always lived on the island... recent school-leavers Molly Luke and Joel Rain are planning to leave in the autumn... and island shop keeper Gary Watson left only to come back. But what is the draw of the place? When the tide is out coachloads of tourists and pilgrims flood onto the island. But when the tide comes in and the island is cut off from the mainland, the visitors disappear and silence descends. Producer: Paul Kobrak.

Keynote paper given by David Owens (University of Reading). On one influential theory of promising, promising involves the transfer of a right to determine whether you do something. So when I successfully promise you that I'll be at the bus stop at a certain time, I transfer to you the right to determine whether I'll show up. Advocates of the 'transfer theory' include both the dead (like Grotius, Hobbes and Locke) and the living (like Gary Watson and Seana Shiffrin). One apparent implication of this theory is that I can successfully promise to do only what I have a right to do, so if I have no right to be at the bus stop (e.g. because I've promised to be elsewhere) then I can't successfully promise to show up. So my promissory duties are limited by my pre- promissory rights. This paper considers the merits of the transfer theory and the plausibility of this implication.
