Joburg, serious news from Roodepoort: West Ridge High and Hoërskool Roodepoort have clashed violently. Cars were stoned, learners injured, and the principal was even stabbed trying to calm things down. This all started after a viral clash last Friday and escalated on Monday when West Ridge learners allegedly returned to Hoërskool Roodepoort. Three learners were seriously hurt, two still in hospital, and 19 learners have been suspended. Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC , Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has called on South Africans to protect the e-hailing industry. Diale-Tlabela made the call following a meeting with taxi associations and e-hailing drivers at Maponya Mall on Monday. The session was aimed at bringing peace between the two transportation services, following the brutal murder of 27-year-old e-hailing driver Mthokozisi Mvelase last week Wednesday evening. South Africa's Automobile Association (AA) has raised concerns over the financial viability of the Gautrain rapid rail system. This comes after Gauteng MEC for human settlements and infrastructure development Lebogang Maile revealed that the Gautrain has lost five million passengers in the last four years. AA says despite this decline, authorities are moving forward with a R120 billion expansion plan. The association says it's concerning that such a large investment is being made in a system that serves a small fraction of commuters instead of prioritising more inclusive transport solutions. The Gauteng department of health has plans to improve infrastructure and upift services in poor communities. The department has unveiled its R64.8 billion budget allocation for the 2024/25 financial year. In August 2024, a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) probe into suspected fraudulent medico-legal claims has saved the national Department of Health more than R3 billion, said Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. At least eleven individuals died from malaria in Gauteng between January and September, signalling that the disease is again on the rise. The Gauteng Government has instituted lifestyle audits on driver's licence officials as it tries to clamp down on corruption. This is after reports of widespread bribery, collusion between examiners, fee dumping and eye-test corruption at Gauteng driver's license testing centres. The results of a 2021 investigation, commissioned by the premier's office, which was presented this week conclude that there are no controls in place to identify or deter possible fraud and corruption while examiners conduct the drivers' tests, especially once they leave the yard to conduct the road test. Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkhosi-Malobane has instructed law enforcement agencies in Gauteng to investigate the assault case of Zimbabwe's first lady Grace Mugabe and ensure that justice is served. This after allegations surfaced by a young South African women that Mugabe assaulted her at a Sandton Hotel. It's understood that Mugabe attacked the woman after finding her with her two sons. The freeway between the Geldenhuys interchange and Van Buuren Road along the N3 in Germiston, East of Johannesburg will be closed in both directions for the next 24 to 48 hours, this after the overhead pedestrian bridge collapsed onto passing cars in the early hours of this morning. Backyard dwellers will be among those who will be prioritised by government when giving assistance on housing. This is according to promises by the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile when he met with residents of Finetown and Ennerdale yesterday afternoon. The meeting follows recent protests over housing that erupted in the area. Mashatile said there are plans to obtain private land near Finetown as well as government land which will be earmarked for housing development. A Political Committee will be established to work with community structures in response to the recent protests in different parts of Gauteng. This is the resolution that emerged from a joint meeting of national and provincial departments that met yesterday to map out a strategy to end the violent protests in many parts of Gauteng. The situation outside the Pretoria High School for Girls is calm but tense as members of various student organizations are picketing outside the school in solidarity with the learners who accused some teachers of racism. The learners claim they are forced to straighten their hair. All gates leading into the premises have been locked and there is a high police presence in and outside the school. Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lusufi was in discussions with the black learners delegation ealier this morning and later met with the school authority and School Governing Body delegation.
A group of student organisations from the University of Pretoria have pledged solidarity with leaners from Pretoria High School for Girls who have allegedly been forced to straighten their hair. Gauteng MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Paul Mashatile is this hour expected to visit Sekampaneng outside Hammanskraal where the community went on rampage yesterday.Two people were killed and three buses set alight as the community which protested against being evicted on a land owned by the City of Tshwane municipality. According to the police the situation remains tense but under control.
Families of about 1 900 mental health patients who are accommodated at the private hospital group Life Esidimeni in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, are at their wits end as the facility is set to close because its contract with the Department of Health is coming to an end. The SA Depression and Anxiety Group says their families are not in a position to care for them and there is not sufficient space at other government facilities in the province. Parents of the children from Roodepoort Primary School, west of Johannesburg, say they want the department to tighten the security at the school. This came out during a meeting which Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, held with them at Matholeville in Roodepoort. The meeting was aimed at addressing the parents' request, to not send their children back to Roodepoort Primary school. The school was closed last month following violent disruptions. It was also alleged that the principal was unfairly appointed. Neliswa Mavundla reports.
It is still not clear whether the troubled Roodepoort Primary School on Gauteng's East Rand will reopen soon. An independent mediation task team has finalised and submitted its report with recommendations to the Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, for consideration. The school has been in the spotlight with allegations of corruption and racism and was temporarily closed two weeks ago. The United Taxi Forum in Gauteng has called on the Gauteng Transport Department to speed up the issuing of operating licenses which will exempt them from paying etolls. Thousands of commuters were left stranded for transport yesterday, when Taxi drivers went on a strike. Taxi operators marched on the department of transport and community safety in Johannesburg, to hand over a memorandum calling for their taxi permits to be reinstated, and that the e-tolls system be scrapped.
