More on this is future works and podcast episodes. Pre-Show We've been having incredible success on both public and private land hunts this season. A record season to be totally honest, with a recent (estimated) 60 birds flushed, totaling 6 coveys and a number of singles pointed and flushed. Additionally, we made roughly 143 contacts with a total of 10 coveys this past MLK Day. My young dogs are getting great early exposure to wild birds and their development has been consistent and impressive each time, starting with my young Setter, Rosalee who had a great find on a crippled bird that got away from us and a beautiful point on a large, 20 bird covey. Jughead has also gotten in a great number of great points and even got a retrieve on a downed bird that ran into a hole. He dug that bird out and got it back to me. To add to the surprise, Dawson and I both shot banded quail on public land which was honestly my goal this season. So now I proudly rock a quail band on my lanyard. I am also currently working on a screening/premiere for the DOGMEN film down in Thomasville. Christian Fitchtel over at OnX had the incredible idea to go above and beyond and get the film on a large screen in addition to showing it online. Stay tuned for those details soon. Also, I am reading Robert Franks' book, Across the Prairies, and will also have him on the podcast when I finish reading it. A description of the book reads: Famous dogs and handlers come alive in this collection of interviews, articles, and fiction from the pen of Robert Franks. Written for the bird dog and field trial community, many of the memories contained within these pages would be lost forever if not for the efforts of the author to collect and preserve important pieces of field trial history. From famous dogs, scouts and handlers, to stories and fiction as only the author can tell it. Sit back and enjoy reading about the sport we love. Also, I am reading Sue Tidwell' book, Cries from the Savannah, and will also have him on the podcast when I finish reading it. A description of the book reads: About the Episode/ Guest(s) This is the 3rd installment of the Land & Lore lecture and interview series at the 2021 Thomasville Center of the Arts' Wildlife Arts Festival. In the episode, we discuss the origins of the ARI on the Aucilla River and their relationship with the Smithsonian Museum. There is the concern that we have raised a number of generations of citizens here who are disconnected from nature. Dr. Jim Dunbar talks about finding artifacts in the Aucilla River, giving a “Whitman's Sampler” of what the world looked like during the pleistocene period of the Americas, specifically, here in the Southeast. Dunbar talks about the various species of animals that existed during the time and their effects on the landscape and on the habitat of the region. So join us again for another highly informative episode from another presenter at the 2021 Wildlife Arts Festival and learn more about how our native landscape has changed over many thousands of years since the Pleistocene. My first guest on the Tami Jackson Show* tonight will be Paul Broun. After graduating from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, Paul Broun devoted nearly four decades to serving others through the practice of medicine. Dr. Broun is passionate about the medical profession and enjoys helping patients whether as a family physician, in emergency medicine, or in the military. Several years before his election to Congress in 2007, to convenience his patients, Dr. Broun developed a practice based upon a style that is almost unique in modern times – one devoted entirely to house calls. At age 18, he volunteered to serve our nation as a U.S. Marine. He was later commissioned as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. After his election to Congress, Dr. Broun continued to practice medicine in his role as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was promoted from Lt. Commander to Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves. In 2012, Paul was deployed to Afghanistan where he treated sick and injured Marines and soldiers. As a military doctor he treated patients in the Navy Health Clinic at Marine Base Quantico and at the Brigade Medical Center at the U.S. Naval Academy. He was honorably discharged in 2014. Dr. Broun is deeply devoted to quality medical care for our Wounded Warriors and Veterans here at home. Paul and Niki Broun have been married since 1985. Dr. Broun has three adult children, Lucy, Carly and Collins. He has two grandchildren, Tillman and Lucile. The Brouns are members of Prince Avenue Baptist. He is a member of the American Legion, VFW, Military Order of World Wars, MOAA, the Marine Corps League, Navy League, and the Reserve Officers Association. An avid sportsman and hunter, Dr. Broun is a Life Member of both the NRA and Gun Owners of America. He is past president of the Georgia Sports Shooters Association and the Georgia Wildlife Federation. His is a former vice president of Safari Club International and is a Life Member of Quail Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly Fisherman. Dr. Broun is a strong constitutional conservative and served in Congress from 2007 - 2015. Listen in as Dr. Broun and I talk about several topics, including evolution! ************************** My guest in the second half hour will be Eric Seligman. Erik Seligman is an engineer living in Hillsboro, Oregon, with his wife and 6th-grade daughter. Seligman attended Carnegie Mellon University and Princeton University, and is a formal verification architect at Intel. He served from 2013-2017 on the board of the Hillsboro School District, the 4th largest k-12. district in Oregon. He has hosted a “fun math” podcast called "Math Mutation" for over 10 years, and written two books on non-politics topics. This year, he and local businessman Manuel Castaneda just launched a new podcast, "Stories of Communism." Erik's from my neck of the woods, did some good on the school board, and entertains via Math...crazy! Todd Holbrook, the new President and CEO of the Georgia Wildlife Federation. Holbrook, of Conyers, comes to GWF after a 27-year career with Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR), including stints as Assistant Director of the Wildlife Resources Division and Chief of Game Management. A certified wildlife biologist, Holbrook was responsible for several groundbreaking studies in Georgia into the decline, recruitment and retention of hunting and angling participation. “The Georgia Wildlife Federation has always been - since I’ve been interacting with them - about sound, scientific wildlife management. Professional wildlife management. How we go about making these wildlife policy decisions. And that’s huge. Because people sometimes get shunted off on what’s convenient and resource decisions need to be made out of the foundation of science.” During his career withe the DNR, Holbrook applied the curiosity of a trained wildlife biologist to study the broader social and economic aspects of wildlife management in Georgia. Cox Enterprises is a leading communications, media and automotive services company. Launched in 2007 by Chairman Jim Kennedy, Cox Conserves is Cox Enterprises' national sustainability program. Cox Conserves focuses on reducing waste and energy consumption, as well as conserving water. The program engages each of the company's major subsidiaries (Cox Communications, Manheim, Cox Media Group and AutoTrader.com) and encourages Cox Enterprises' 50,000 employees and their families to engage in eco-friendly practices.
