Pantera were the mightiest heavy metal band of their era. Both Guy Sykes and Grady Champion worked for Pantera throughout most of their career, Guy as tour manager and Grady as “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott’s guitar tech. We have a great time recalling Pantera’s storied history from their spandex club days in Texas all the way to becoming one of the most inspirational and infamous heavy metal bands in the history of music. This is an epic episode.
THE LEE BOYS are one of America’s finest “sacred steel” ensembles and have been bringing their joyful noise around world for over 10 years. This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their nephews, Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass), Earl Walker (drums) and Roosevelt Collier (Pedal Steel) and Chris Johnson, a young pedal steel player from Miami, that is making quite a name for himself. The band’s new album ‘Live On The East Coast’ continues the Lee Boys reputation of playing eclectic, soulful music that incorporates elements of rock, country, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, funk and more. GRADY CHAMPION is a 21st Century Bluesman. This Mississippi-based songwriter/entertainer/musician has been captivating audiences for more than two decades. Champion has been the winner of prestigious Grammy and Blues Music Awards as well as the recipient of the 26th International Blues Challenge. His new CD, ‘Steppin' In’, is a tribute to legendary Texas bluesman ZZ Hill who died 35 years ago. Hill particularly inspired CHAMPION because Hill’s combination of blues & soul stylings helped to restore the blues to modern black consciousness.
En este episodio de Historias del Blues tenemos a Grady Champion con su disco Steppin' In: A Tribute To Z.Z. Hill; Jimmie Vaughan y Baby, Please Come Home, los 50 años del primer disco de la banda argentina Manal y un homenaje a Screamin’ Jay Hawkins al cumplirse 20 años de su muerte.

This hour could easily be called "The Friends Edition." About a third of the tracks in the hour are tracks that feature someone else along with the primary artists. And, I've got four Roadhouse debuts, as well. King Bee & The Stingers, Gracie Curran, Dallas Hodge, Carla Olson & Todd Wolfe, and Grady Champion are all ahead. Featured artists and Roadhouse debuts - sounds to me like another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 750th Roadhouse.

Grady Champion has been captivating audiences for two decades with his high energy blues that represents who he is and where he’s from. Who he is, is a Grammy-award winning songwriter, Malaco recording artist who recently graced the cover of Living Blues Magazine and 2010 winner of the coveted International Blues Challenge. Where he’s from is the birthplace of the blues, Mississippi; the place where he was raised in a religious rural family as the youngest of 28 children. During his career as a rap artist, the blues came calling and he never looked back releasing several critically acclaimed albums which included notable songs with social commentary like “Police Man Blues” and “Children of the Corn.” He released his upbeat sophomore effort for famed Malaco records in September, “One of a Kind.”

Sturgis Nikides plays the blues but does it with a flavor of rock and roll, from its origins in delta blues to its far dark alternative edge. Together with the vocals of his partner in life and crime, Mandy Lemons, their music has found its home. Together they are Low Society and I will sit and chat with them about their journey as we listen to You Can't Keep A Good Woman Down, which dropped last week. The band Hurricane Ruth consists of Hurricane Ruth LeMaster on vocals, Dave Lumsden on guitar, Gary Davis on bass and Jim Engle on drums. They originate from central/southern Illinois, packing venues throughout the region. Critics and fans hail their shows as powerful, raw, emotional and dynamic. Their new album, Born On The River, consists of 11 originals that prove their reputation as tthe Ultimate Blues Rock Experience. We'll talk about their road to this point and how they found each other in the world of music. Then I am thrilled to have TWO COUCH KID NEW MUSIC SEGMENTS on the show. First, Ms Rory Block returns with her latest gem, Hard Luck Child - A Tribute To Skip James, a full week before it releases! Rory and I will talk about what she has been doing since her last visit on June 17th of last year and explore her new album, the fifith in her Mentor Series. Then Grady Champion returns to The Couch to talk about his new album, Bootleg Whiskey which dropped last month. Grady originally took a Seat On The Couch way back in January of 2012, and I am excited to have him return with the new album. We'll explore what he has been up to and reask a question we asked in his first interview, "If you had not won the IBC, would your career be the same?" to see if his answer is the same. "Musicians You Should Know"
