Influencers of Sponsorship Marketing - a Roth Revenue Podcast
Gavin Roth here with another episode of the Influencers of Sponsorship Marketing, sponsored by Homestand Sports – authentically connecting iGaming brands with sports fans wherever they are. For more, visit homestandsports.com. I love talking to athletes. Especially the successful ones. And no, not in a creepy fan-boy way. When you spend time with elite athletes, you can't help but notice what made them that way – their passion, tenacity, drive, competitiveness, work ethic, self-awareness. Mike Morreale – former CFL star and current Commissioner of the CEBL – checks all those boxes. We caught up just after Labour Day, 3 weeks after the culmination of the CEBL's 2023 campaign – their most successful to date with expansion to 10 teams and a new broadcast deal with TSN. It was also a few days after the CFL Labour Day Classic between the Argos and Ticats. You see… Mike played (and starred) in his share of Labour Day Classics. He actually suited up for both his hometown Tiger-Cats AND their fierce rivals down the QEW. But this year, he had his feet up at home and enjoyed it on the tube. We talk about his days in the CFL where he won 2 Grey Cups and numerous awards. How being a goalkeeper in soccer prepared him for a 12-year career as a receiver in the league. And how his CFL experiences (both as a player and with the CFLPA) set the foundation for his current role running Canada's only professional basketball league. Mike shines a light on Richard Petko and Ron Foxcroft – 2 men whose belief and support helped Mike build a successful second career. He takes us into a week in the life of a pro sports commissioner. On the corporate partnership front, we discuss how Mike and his colleagues had to sell a vision to brands before the first basket was scored. And the partnerships that have been - and will be - so instrumental to the league's success. Including a new one with Canadian data insights firm, StellarAlgo that will help the CEBL engage their fans and partners in a more strategic and effective way. And we wrap with great professional development advice centred around self-awareness and relationships. You'll leave informed and inspired. I hope you enjoy. On this week episode of The Elks Call we are joined by Darryl Henderson, avid Edmonton Elks and Grey Cup superfan. We mix it up a little bit by not focusing so much on the July 29th game against the BC Lions, instead digging into the difficult questions and topics that are currently plaguing the Edmonton Elks organization as a whole. From the changes that have been made to the coaching staff and QB, to boo's, paper bags, and name changes, we dive deep into the fan reactions to all those topics. We end on a lighter note, however, by talking to Darryl about his love for Grey Cups and a particular picture of him that truly showcases that love.#TheElksHerd #GoElks #Edmonton #YEG #CFL #JoinTheHerd #Football #CanadaUSE CODE "STAMPEDE" FOR %10 OFF AT ROYAL RETROS! The game was played on November 20, 2022, at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan. It marked the fourth Grey Cup game to be held in Regina, and the first to be held at the new Mosaic Stadium as opposed to Taylor Field. The game was played between the West Division champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the East Division champion Toronto Argonauts; the Argonauts won 24–23 and earned their league-leading 18th Grey Cup, preventing the Blue Bombers from becoming the first team to win three consecutive Grey Cups since 1980.
Special guest Mike Hogan (Toronto Argonauts Manager - Communications, TSN 1050 radio Argos play-by-play) joins to talk about his career, the Toronto sports market, and his Argos' favourites from players to Grey Cups (recorded February 24, 2023).
On Sunday will be played the 109th Grey Cup game, so what else would this episode of the Rouge White & Blue CFL Podcast be about? Well… With RWB co-host Joe Pritchard actually in Regina, site of the Grey Cup as well as concomitant week-long festivities for fans and podcasting types, co-host Os Davis welcomes on our friend of show now based in Japan, international football podcaster Greg James. Greg and Os put a moratorium on the Montreal Alouettes' and BC Lions' seasons and make our picks/prediction for the Grey Cup, including Greg's solid reason for rooting on the Toronto Argonauts in this one (hint: it's got to do with The Rock). The RWB does like the chances of a Winnipeg Blue Bombers threepeat, though… As sports history buffs/geeks, Greg and Os talk some 1950 Grey Cup, a.k.a. The Med Bowl, a.k.a. the last time the Bombers and Argos played for the trophy. And as CFL fans, there's no stopping some speculation on the immediate short- and medium-term future of the league… Enjoy the Grey Cup! (And take the Bombers minus the points…) The Rouge, White & Blue CFL Podcast: talking Grey Cups past, present and future

Tony Ambrogio, was born in London, Ontario and always wanted to do NFL and NHL play-by-play. I used to joke I knew I wanted to be involved in sports broadcasting when I was a day old! After attending Fanshawe College and graduating from the Broadcast Journalism Program, I got my first real media job at CFOS-AM radio in Owen Sound, Ontario in 1987. I did a bit of everything- from newscasting to sportscasting to reporting. I covered City Hall, Board of Education, various court proceedings and elections (municipal, provincial to federal). I did colour commentary on OHL games. I also hosted a nightly sports talk show called "Sportsticker." I was so lucky having the chance to talk to so many of my idols- from Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Dave Keon, Danny Gallivan to Tom Cheek. From there I went to work at Queen's Park for a brief period of time before being hired by the Score Television Network. I was able to cover the NHL playoffs, Memorial Cups, Grey Cups, Golf and Tennis tournaments, and Blue Jays baseball while I was at the Score. In 2009, I joined Sportsnet as a freelance reporter. Again, I have been fortunate to cover the World Series, NHL playoffs, and the Blue Jays. I currently work at TSN, TSN1050 Radio and TSN.CA and I teach at the College of Sports Media and Centennial College in Toronto. And I also am involved in descriptive video work for Accessible Media. I have also done live descriptive video for the visually impaired during the 2018 Winter Olympics for NBC. If you are looking for a freelance reporter/host for radio, print, web or TV I have plenty of experience and a wide range of ability. Sunday, May 22: Like Father Like Son: 2014 Ottawa Trip and Grey Cups by FiredUp Network
Matt Dunigan had an illustrious career in the CFL. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2006, won two Grey Cups (1987 & 1991) and is currently a CFL on TSN Analyst. He shares memories and stories from his time on the 1991 Toronto Argos, their most iconic championship team in history.
Although Warren Moon was overlooked time and again throughout his career, his perseverance led to an unusually long and extremely successful stint as a quarterback in the NFL. In addition to having to fight against the perception that he didn't have what it takes to lead an NFL team, he also had to fight against prejudice in a league that had few black quarterbacks. After being passed over by the NFL, Moon went to Canada and led his Edmonton Eskimos to five Grey Cups before being the subject of a bidding war among NFL teams. He would play professional football for 23 years and become the first quarterback to pass for over 60,000 yards in his career. Moon was the first 40-year-old to throw five touchdowns in a game and pass for 400 yards. He is also the only player in both the American and Canadian football halls of fame.

Legendary Broadcaster, Brian Williams joined Matt and Blake as he announces his retirement after a 50 year career. Talked about the start of his career and a few of the early Grey Cups he has worked. He recited, incredibly, where he was sitting in some of these games, the score, the story of the game. Talked about what he enjoyed the most of what he has seen. Says one of the earliest lessons he learned is that he is a story teller. Talked about his early days in Invermere, BC. It’s where he learned country music and dancing. Talked about they Olympics in Vancouver. Says that in his conversations with Olympic officials, that Vancouver was the city that bought in the most. Vancouver changed the way Canadian athletes approached the Olympics. Heading into the games, Canada was the only country to host the games twice and never win a gold medal. Talked about his best moments in his career. They are all exciting and all good. Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali joined the guys in his regular Friday spot. Talked about why he keeps his phone on set while doing his show live. Talked about Scott Mellanby and that he is hearing his name more. Says Bergevin isn’t coming here until there is full autonomy. Talked about the Aquilini family structure. Hasn’t heard much but keeps hearing “patience”. Says this franchise is 2 to 3 smart decisions away from being a contender. TG has be feeling better after a couple of wins. Do what Jeff Gorton did today. He laid out a mission statement. Seattle expansion has 9 more goals than the Canucks. Rick doesn’t understand why Dowling is on his left side if they are trying to bump his slump. This team would be in a totally different spot of Boeser had 10 goals and EP had 13. Talked about Abby. Everything is fine with Klimovich. Not many people know how tough that league is. He is only 18 and the youngest guy in the league. Rick’s gut says he won’t go to junior. He has hit a wall and getting a reset. Don’t read too much into it. Believes Evander Kane’s agent has talked to the Canucks. Though, he doesn’t see it happening. Talked about Hamonic and all the coincidences. Talked about De Brusk. A 7th round won’t cut it. Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot. Talked about how excited he is to see Sidney Crosby tomorrow. Talked about why. Says that for the profile that he has, he knows almost nothing about him. He is just one part of this machine that is winning. At this stage of his career and this season, he is just one of the guys. Not the headliner in the here and now, but still has that status to him. Talked about the to and fro of Hamonic. Talked about goaltending. Things move quickly in the NHL. Canucks thought they were set for years with Luongo and Schneider. Same thing in PIT that has Jarry as their starter now. Captain Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune joined Matt and Blake to talk about the division rivalry match for the Seahawks vs 49ers this weekend. Talked about the Hawks picking up Adrian Peterson. Talked about how AP was tailgating at a college game last weekend. Talked about why they have a need for him in the first place. The average career span for a RB is 2.6 years. AP has played 15… even if there has been limited participation in the last few seasons. That’s why he signed a practice roster spot for a 3-8 team. Talked about the milestones AP is on the verge of breaking. The Seahawks have to make RB decisions well outside of temporarily brining in this player. This is more like a hobby for Pete Carroll. Talked about young players who have something to gain the rest of the way in meaningless games. Gregg is looking at DK Metcalf. Wondering if he really wants to stick around this team with RW3 potentially leaving. He is playing for himself and getting into a position to get a big contract.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's where he learned country music and dancing. Says Bergevin isn't coming here until there is full autonomy. Talked about the Aquilini family structure. Hasn't heard much but keeps hearing “patience”. Says this franchise is 2 to 3 smart decisions away from being a contender. TG has be feeling better after a couple of wins. Do what Jeff Gorton did today. He laid out a mission statement. Seattle expansion has 9 more goals than the Canucks. Rick doesn't understand why Dowling is on his left side if they are trying to bump his slump. This team would be in a totally different spot of Boeser had 10 goals and EP had 13. Talked about Abby. Everything is fine with Klimovich. Not many people know how tough that league is. He is only 18 and the youngest guy in the league. Rick's gut says he won't go to junior. He has hit a wall and getting a reset. Don't read too much into it. Believes Evander Kane's agent has talked to the Canucks. Though, he doesn't see it happening.

Competing with his older NFL HOF brother Marcus Allen growing up, to how he is attacking the greens in golf. So much knowledge and wisdom in this conversation. (https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/ATG-Geroy.png) Geroy had a long and successful Hall of Fame career playing 17 years of professional football. He spent a couple years in the NFL with the Bengals, Eagles, Steelers and Bucs, with the majority of time spent with the Buccaneers. The majority of his playing career was in the CFL and the BC Lions, but he also spent time with the Blue Bombers and Roughriders. He has developed a love for cooking since retiring and loves to spend time grilling up food on the BBQ. Growing up in the Pittsburgh area, football was always big for him and his family. His love for the game developed at a young age, however he didn’t start playing organized football until 7th grade. He grew up loving basketball as well and played that along with track and field as a kid. He just loved to play all kinds of sports and compete. Basketball was his first love, however football was where he excelled the most and would be his best sports option. He chose to attend the University of Maryland after high school due to their run-and-shoot offense that they had which was similar to what he had at his high school. It would give him a chance to showcase his skills as a receiver and have a prominent role on the team. He played as a true freshman and had an immediate impact on the team. After college, he was not drafted, but was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals. He was released by the team and bounced around a few teams, including his hometown Steelers, until he landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The next year he was on their practice roster for the whole season before being released. As a guy who tends to play best when “the lights are on,” he didn’t get a true chance to show what he could do in the NFL. He did get his chance in the CFL where he excelled when he landed with the BC Lions. He won 3 Grey Cups while in the CFL with each carrying special meaning to him. The 1st one he won in 2006, which was his 1st championship at any level. His last one was with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and in that game he recorded his first 2 touchdowns in the Grey Cup game. After retiring, he knew he wouldn’t come back even if approached by a team. He was offered a position with the Roughriders by Brendan Taman, who brought him to the league originally while with the Blue Bombers years prior. He then was offered a position with the Lions, where his family was which he happily accepted. He is now the Director of Canadian Scouting with the team and has seen an improvement in the level of Canadian talent in the game. Today’s podcast segment features our guest, Catherine Smart, Manager, Blue Mountain Village Foundation, in the great nation of Canada. Catherine comes on the 321 Biz Development show to provide some details about the Damon Allen Celebrity Golf Tournament to be held on September 26-27 at the beautiful Blue Mountain Village Resort on southern Georgian Bay, about 2 hours northwest of downtown Toronto. I made a connection with Blue Mountain Village Foundation through colleague, Samantha Brookes, CEO, Mortgages of Canada located in Toronto. I want to thank Catherine, Damon and Samantha for allowing me to support this celebration and worthy cause. Let me give our listeners a brief bio on Damon Allen. And Damon is graciously invited as a VIP guest to do a pre-event podcast segment. Damon Allen, a native of San Diego, and brother of the NFL’s Marcus Allen, has been mentioned as one of the greatest CFL quarterbacks of all time after winning four Grey Cups with three different teams. He also was a three-time Grey Cup MVP. In 2005, he was the CFL Most Outstanding Player at 42 yrs. old, becoming the oldest MVP of any North American sports franchise. He was a formidable passer and rusher, as he retired only 323 yards behind his brother Marcus. In 2012, he was elected into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. In May 2010, Allen launched the Damon Allen Quarterback Academy, in which he personally teaches the skills and strategies of quarterbacking to students of all ages and skill levels. Damon still has a competitive spirit as he has transitioned his energies off the gridiron to a bigger stage of performance coaching, mentoring and philanthropy. Damon Allen is a world class speaker, speaking professionally around the globe on “Leadership Success from the Field to the Boardroom” with his award-winning speech, “Quarterbacking Your Way to Success: Lessons from the Gridiron.” Damon is also finishing his first book titled “The Whole Nine Yard” which he expects to be published by end of 2019. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/321bizdevelopment/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/321bizdevelopment/support

(https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/ATG-Ben.png) Ben had an outstanding 13 year career in the Canadian Football League all with the Montreal Alouettes. He grew up playing soccer and basketball and didn’t start playing football until he got to high school. And although it wasn’t his favourite sport, he saw football as his best opportunity to earn a scholarship for college. Being a little on the smaller side, he always had to prove himself as a player. His college career started at a Junior College in Utah before going to Brigham Young University as a walk-on. He turned down scholarships at other smaller schools in choosing to go there. He knew he would get a chance to play and showcase his skills with the receiver friendly offence that they had there. That’s exactly what he did, and had a great couple of years there which earned him a first round selection by the Alouettes. He did have a brief tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that lasted 2 days. He initially struggled to establish himself with the Alouettes, playing mostly special teams. However due to injuries he got his opportunity and made the most of it. His first year he played out wide at the “z” receiver. However coach Don Matthews wanted to give him a shot at the slot receiver position. He was nervous about the move, having struggled there the few times he had an opportunity early in his career. However he excelled and developed great chemistry with another future Hall of Famer, Anthony Calvillo. They became one of the deadliest combos in CFL history. He won 3 Grey Cups with the Als, and has fond memories of them. The losses hurt maybe even more having played in many Grey Cups, but he is grateful for the victories. Especially the victory over the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the 2009 Grey Cup game. They never led in that game until the last play of the game with no time left on the clock. They fought and clawed and never gave up and persevered with the leaders of the team stepping up big for them. After football he transitioned into coaching. The timing worked out perfectly for him as he retired in 2010 and walked right into a coaching position with his alma mater, BYU. He was there for a couple years until some of the staff was let go. A few years later he was hired again by the team and lasted another 2 years until being let go again. From there he decided to move into the business world and is now working for G2G, or Good to Go. They are a protein bar company based out of Utah and he is running the Canadian division. They have just recently launched in Canada and is available in certain areas. It is a refrigerated protein bar which is unique to Canada. It is used by many college and pro teams and they are looking to grow their market share in the highly competitive market. (https://atgridiron.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/ATG-Kerry.png) Kerry enjoyed a 3 year NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins. He then went on to play another 5 seasons with the Montreal Alouettes. It wasn’t until he left the carribbean till he started playing football. He quickly fell in love with the game, but always had a fondness for volleyball. After being heavily recruited he chose the University of Stanford due to their great football program, academic prowess, and mother’s wishes. He excelled quickly at Stanford, becoming a starter as a freshman. His hard work later earned him a spot on the Seahawks, however an injury ended his time in the NFL while with the Redskins. From there he played for the Alouettes where he won 2 Grey Cups, in 2009 & 2010. After football he was drawn to the marketing world starting businesses in that field. He is now with Atavus, a company that provides information and training to help football programs inprove tackling.
