Come and join the conversation with the gorgeous Hellen Ward, Co Founder & Director of the largest independent Hair & Beauty salons in the country! Come on a journey as we chat about the beginnings of her entering the industry in her teens, her Mum being a hairdresser and Dad being the MD of a chain of department stores. Hellen undertook an apprenticeship following her parents separation and a financially difficult time, hilariously admitting to me that she was a "dreadful hairdresser"! Through her exceptional people skills and self proclaimed gift of the gab, she built herself a strong client base and became intrigued with the business side of salons. Hellen talks me through her love for the industry, however not keen on being a hairdresser, she knew that her skills and experience could take her into a managerial role, something that she relished. Becoming a salon manager at the tender age of 20, Hellen was quickly promoted to Regional Manager, travelling up and down the country and thrived in her role, constantly soaking up the ins and outs of the business side of salon management. Upon meeting her husband Richard, it made perfect sense for them to combine their minds, experience and skillsets to embark on a business venture of their very own. Not the most traditional start however, they bravely took the plunge on a salon that had gone bankrupt! 1992 marks the start of their epic journey, navigating obstacles on the way but Hellen has always had such an incredible self intuition and self belief that has carried her through to result in the roaring success of the salon you see today! Drawing on her deep spirituality and guided by that inner trust she has, she has listened to her gut every step of the way, and it has served her so well. We chat about the pressures of COVID, the severe impact that it has had not only for their business personally but for the industry as a whole. We talk about the shift in the industry, a lot of salons moving into self employment, thus creating a ripple effect for the future of the hair and beauty sector, especially when it comes to the next generation of apprentices. She talks to me openly about the implications following the rule breaking during lockdown and the adverse effect it was having on the industry nationally. We chat about people's mental health during the course of the pandemic, that need for connection and the sheer importance of being able to have that salon experience. Hellen is regarded as one of the countries leading Hair & Beauty industry business experts, offering consultancy services, she has written books, jam packed with all of her extensive experience over the years to help salons succeed. Absolutely passionate about her industry and her work, Hellen beams when talking about their salon, the community they have created and her need to be on the shop floor as much as possible, as she is so invested in the community they have created over the years. Building relationships with their clients has been integral to their success, the same goes for the management of the salon, Hellen tells me how important it is to her to offer flexible working, especially when it comes to staff who have children, from personal experience she knows how vital this is. Hellen also talks me through her work outside of the salon, being the Vice President of the UK branch of the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs. Such a fascinating backstory to the organisation, hailing from France after the Second World War, it was initially set up to support the women whose husbands' had been sadly killed during the conflict and guide them in the running of their businesses. BAWE is a community of inspirational women, collaborating with one another, expert speakers and everything in between! Have a listen and be inspired by this powerhouse of a woman, what an AMAZING lady, such a talent in her field and such an interesting chat! Thankyou Hellen it was an absolute joy!

E35 That Great Business Show - Ireland's best business podcastHosted by Conall O Móráin2.00" Norman Crowley, founder of Cool Planet (fka Crowley Carbon). This is an interview like no other. Norman has a completely different take on how to save our planet, something he says technology will be able to do by 2030, but of course we have to make changes. He covers so many topics from the inefficiency of cows, to how he could save the government €300m through energy efficiency, why he sells his businesses, ($750m sold to date), why he thinks there's too much politeness with staff and so, so, so much more. Thirty minutes of his thoughts will make you see climate change and many other topics in a completely different light. Norman's 'hire in a heartbeat'? Elon Musk. But does he really have his phone number?32" Samantha King, founder of King Hair and Beauty. She was soooo bored by her work in corporate law Samantha dreamed of doing something with her life that made other people happy - so she became a hair extensionist - yes, there is such a thing. From the front room in her Wicklow home she has grown and grown her business, to supplying 200 outlets with her hair and beauty products, she's created her own design registered hair brush - the Jewel brush - but she's looking for a mentor to bring her business to the world. How she uses New York based Irish influencer Erika Fox, the best way to get influencer engagement and how much it costs. Her 'hire in a heartbeat'? Sonia Deasy of Pestle and Mortar.55" Peter Jenkinson, CEO, WRKIT - a most unusual company that grew out of a 'side hustle' that Peter had when he was an Aer Lingus pilot. Finding he could negotiate discounts for his fellow pilots led to setting up an always profitable business that was already fully functioning when he retired as a pilot. Since the early days of offering insurance discounts the offer has now grown to a staggering 1,100 suppliers with a potential customer base of 500,000 people. And, that's only one fifth of the business. The big, big growth area during Covid has been their mental health programmes, and he explains how client Peter Mark hairdressers, used the WRKIT platform to keep furloughed staff engaged. Not surprisingly, Peter's 'hire in a heartbeat' is former British Airways / IAG boss, Willie Walsh who used to fly with Peter. This week’s guest takes us on a divergent path from what I have always believed; that beauty, first and foremost, emanates from within. I met celebrity hairstylist Kim Robinson at a friend’s lunch recently. Our conversation on beauty made me wonder, what if the way we look shapes our self belief? Can a bad haircut hold us back? What happens when our exterior appearance is not aligned with our true self?! In this episode, Kim walks me through his journey of beauty from starting out in Western Australia to becoming a household name throughout Asia. He shares some of the most important lessons he has learned along the way, how he handles the ups and downs, embraces self-love, his definition of beauty and how his recent health scare has helped him refocus his priorities. He also imparts beauty tips on what makes a good hair-do, and how we can all leverage on hair to look and FEEL our best every day, well most days. Beauty and perfection is a state of mind. ✌

We Are Here - SouthCoast.fm - South Coast MA Entrepreneurs & Business
It was June of 2020 when I interviewed Brandan Burke, co-founder number 1 of 3 of what’s known today as SRVHUB. Brandan & team were not only knee-deep in finding a new brand name for the company, going through the intense EforAll accelerator, trying to build a mobile app, and make sense of the greatest thing on all of our minds — a global pandemic. How do you go from a whirlwind scenario when all of these elements are swirling around you and you don’t even know if getting in-home hair and beauty services will even cease to exist after we come out of the other side?! Luckily for our South Coast community Brandan, Devaughn, and Grantham weathered the storm, launching their mobile offering this March 2021. While we’re not clear of the pandemic yet, for better or for worse, it did bring some opportunity to the team seeking to empower the beauty professional through their support and mobile application. In today’s episode, Devaughn and Grantham join us to provide an update on where they were almost a year ago, to what comes next for the South Coast’s latest on-demand mobile app service. Our inaugural podcast simply had to be a legend of the industry.... and Hilary Hall from the NHBF really fits the bill. The National Hair & Beauty Federation (formerly NHF) was founded in 1942 and has been supporting the hair and beauty industry with all things business and legal for almost eight decades! The NHBF is a membership organisation; a bonafide independent, not for profit, trade association who support our industry exclusively. They have been leading the coronavirus recovery effort as a representative and advisor throughout; alongside 4 other bodies. This is not new activity; they have been lobbying support for government changes around VAT and NMW increases for years. But Covid has really provided a platform for their exposure; Hilary has been interviewed on almost every news channel and radio station and thousands of hairdressers, beauticians and technicians have been glued to their social updates after every Boris briefing. We tied Hilary down to talk more broadly about her predictions for the industry, her 'one wish' for salon professionals and why her husband gives such good business advice! This episode of Industry Celebrities, Kimberly D. Scott interviews Rachel Ani, a talented licensed hairstylist and makeup artist at Salon D. In 2002, after Rachel graduated, she started her basics at the University of North Texas. After she finished her freshmen year, she was offered by her uncle, Ardem Keshishian - the owner of Salon D - to work as a part-time receptionist at his Salon. With her background in makeup, she used the opportunity to hone her skills by doing events like weddings, proms, and special occasions. While working at the salon, she had thought about going to cosmetology school. The turning point was when she was sitting in her accounting class and she felt like she was drowning by being there. She never went back after that because she knew that she did not want to be trapped on something she did not want to do. This decision made her parents upset. It’s understandable because every parent would want their child to be able to finish a degree. What’s admirable about Rachel is the fact that she was brave enough to pursue what she was really passionate about. Her heart belonged behind the chair so she took a leap and studied Cosmetology at Paul Mitchell School and graduated with honors. The beauty industry gave sparks of joy to Rachel because aside from creating and immensely improving her client's beauty, she loved the feeling of being with clients who were always happy to get pampered by her. This was the kind of joy that made her love her work even more. So to all those who wanted to get into the beauty industry, she wants to remind all the aspiring hair and makeup stylists to be prepared, to always take the challenge on doing something out of your comfort zones and never stop improving yourself because these are the best ways to hone your skills. Looking back, after every road that she traveled, her piece of advice for her younger self and to those who are feeling unsure on which road to take for their career is to take the time to explore all the options and to never follow someone's cookie cutter mold they put out for your life. Listen to your heart, ponder on what career you want for yourself and know what it’s going to take to get you there without fully worrying on the dollar amount that goes with that career. Kimberly interviews Ardem Keshishian, Owner of SalonD and expert in the Beauty/Hair Industry. It started out with a desire to have the Tom Cruise “Top Gun” haircut, so he went to the mall for the cut, but he wasn’t a fan of the outcome. In this episode I am joined by my friends Ralitsa and Ashleica. They are both amazing singers (check our their work!) and overall amazing people. We all work in the film industry as background performers, and in this episode we discuss our experience on a tv show that required us to be au naturel. Growing up in London, Montreal and Scotland, we talk about our experiences growing up as black females, and some experiences now. I talk about how my black mother’s self-esteem effected me. We also dive a bit into dating as a black woman (interracial dating and dating within the race) and natural hair transitions. It's mostly from a humorous perspective, so you're guaranteed to laugh a little ;) We start the episode by answering three random questions: -Do you possess any of the qualities of your astrological sign? - What one goal do you hope to accomplish this year? -Would you rather be a great musician, artist or athlete?
