Medical compliance issues extend to the medical aesthetic and medical spa industry. In fact, as one of the fastest-growing industries with a shortage of qualified injectors, medical spas risk falling out of compliance. Nicole Gregory is joined by Alex Thiersch, the CEO of the American Med Spa Association, to talk about med spa compliance, the importance of education, tracking growth income, how to approach trends, and making your med spa more inclusive. The medical spa industry is seeing consistent growth, but it is still dealing with the exact compliance issues it was fifteen years ago. Alex explains where the compliance issues stem from and why this is happening. As an attorney, Alex is pushing for a compliance benchmark where consumers will feel comfortable going to any med spa. 99% of medical spas follow the current regulations. It's only a small handful of spas that aren't compliant, and it tends to fall to the fact that they don't know any better. Unless they've initially trained in plastic surgery or dermatology, most MDs, RNs, and Nurse Practitioners aren't aware that medical aesthetics is an industry they can not only succeed but thrive. The only solution here is to push education; training courses are available from AmSpa, your local med spa, and at Urban You. We encourage you to explore the medical aesthetics industry, get some hands-on experience, and go further with it if you love it. Be part of the solution to the compliance issues due to lack of training in various aspects of the industry. In this episode, you will also learn about why medical aesthetic practitioners are at risk of losing their medical licenses, investment opportunities through private equity funds, and why it's harder to consolidate medical spas (there are currently between 7500-8000 different brands of med spa across the world!), and the importance of marketing to BIPOC and transgender individuals. Discussed in this episode: ● The growth of medical aesthetics and med spas ● Compliance issues impacting the industry ● Solving compliance issues with education and training ● How private equity is driving industry growth ● Consolidating medical spas - dos and don'ts ● How to become a qualified medical spa practitioner ● How to know if a new trend is something you should pursue ● The You Belong Here campaign for the inclusion of BIPOC and transgender people Connect with American Med Spa ● Website: https://www.americanmedspa.org/ ● Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amspa_americanmedspa/ ● Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmericanMedSpaAssociation/ ● Twitter: https://twitter.com/amspa1 ● YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC67oWsoscR1MDgFozbYEYHg LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/american-med-spa-association/
It's funny to imagine that China was once considered a sleeping giant; these days it is anything but. According to the latest figures from the Global Wellness Institute, China is now the second largest wellness economy in the world, valued at $682 billion, behind only the US, and China's average growth rate through the pandemic only dipped 2.5%, much less than almost all of the other top 20 global wellness markets. If you've ever been curious about the spa market in China, this episode will pull back the curtain as we hear from country experts Fifi Kao, Editor of Spa China Magazine, and Graham Earnshaw, Publisher, Entrepreneur and long-time China resident.

An entrepreneur goes to buy a massage table, and ends up buying the company instead! Thus begins the industry career of Allan Share, the unofficial mayor of the US spa industry.
A Distinction without a Difference is what they call a logical fallacy. It's when we draw a very fine distinction between two things but ultimately it doesn't amount to any meaningful difference. 'I'm not lying...I'm just stretching the truth.' That would be an example. It's something we see a lot in the hospitality industry, specifically, the Spa Industry. 'They serve Ginger Tea on arrival...but we server ours with Honey!' Is there a distinction between the two offerings? Sure. Does it really make any meaningful difference to the customer? Not really. TASK: Review your USPs through the filter of 'Distinction without a Difference'. Are your USPs meaningfully different from your competitors? OR, are they merely a Distinction without a Difference? #differences #distinction #marketing

Today's episode Pete sits down with Trina Gregory-Prost. Trina is the chef/owner of SE7EN BITES in Orlando, Florida with her wife VA. SE7EN BITES servers southern nostalgic food with a modern twist. Trina's Grammie was the first person to introduce her to cooking/baking when she was very young. However, cooking was never anything other than a hobby for Trina. Trina's love was for the Spa industry and Trina was in the Spa industry for 21 years. Trina love the Spa Industry the entire time she was in the Spa Industry. The last 5 years Trina was in the Spa Industry she traveled the world opening multi-million dollar spas. Towards the end of Trina's time in the Spa Industry she had her first child and being gone two to three weeks at at time with a new born was not feasible. While Trina would be doing beings nails and such she would hear about people struggling to find a good restaurant to cater their event or family gatherings. Around 2010 Trina went back to school to be a cook to learn the nitty gritty fundamentals on top of already knowing how to cook well. Her dream at this point was to be a private chef once she completed culinary school. Through the early part of Trina's culinary story Pete and Trina discuss the age old argument of should you go to culinary school or not and the things that Trina did that other people questioned because her age. Things like internships and externships in different kitchens learning all the could. Trina and Pete talk about the importance of growing your skill set and letting go of your ego to just do whatever it takes to be the most qualified you can be. Trina graduated culinary school with a culinary degree, a baking and pastry degree and a restaurant management degree. After graduating Trina already was doing catering for three commercial accounts to sell desserts for, therefore was renting space in a commercial kitchen (which was very expensive). Trina's girlfriend (now wife) talked Trina into renting out her own little space because it would be the same cost to get her own space set up and this would allow them to take on a couple more clients. After Trina and her wife VA rented out their own space and began to build the place out VA says to Trina, not only could you do catering orders but let's just add a counter and we can serve people who walk in. That is how SE7EN BITES began. Trina's wife VA has had fourteen years of experience in the restaurant industry working for the Carrabba's Outback Group training all the proprietors of how the kitchen was ran. Through the conversations Triana and VA had while creating SE7EN BITES was that you can be successful in the restaurant industry if you will just hang onto the fundamentals of business. You can have great food and go broke because you do not know how to balance a budget. This is just two highlights of many highlights of this episode that you do not want to miss out on. When consider a job or career change, people often very definite ideas on the Industry they want to join. I want to work in the Hotel Industry. I'd like a career in the Spa Industry. Yet, when you quiz them on what job they want to have within that industry, they're not so clear. That's a risky approach to take. If you're not loving the specific job that you're doing, day in, day out, it will be really difficult to enjoy being in your chosen industry. Focus on the Job first, then look at what types of industries have a job like that. #jobsearch #careerchange #jobrole

We all know our industry has forever changed. Thank you, COVID! But only we, the leaders, the artists, the people behind the chair, are the only ones who feel all the feels. I don’t know about you, but I remember a few people saying things like… “No one is going to be rushing to get their hair done when things open back up.” or “I don’t think people are going to be pouring money into their hair and pedicures as they used to.” or “Are people even going to feel safe to go into the salon?”I heard all of these comments, and I reassured the “people” who said these things that that wouldn’t be the case. I’ve lived life as a stylist through the 2008 economy crash, and I can tell you that it was not the case; in fact, it was my highest year as a commissioned stylist at that time. So, thinking back to June when we got the green light to open, I never worried that people wouldn’t want to come in or that our guests wouldn’t feel comfortable.

Today I am talking with Hannah Duncan, Founder of WELL Products, for an episode I recorded for the Latinas In Beauty Series. Tune in today to hear how Hannah's journey of entrepreneurship began. From radio, to marketing to esthetics, and CBD. What a story! Hannah also shares what it is like being female and Latina in this male dominated industry. We also get to learn about her line. The CBD teas, the essential oils, to the serums and oils. So good, as I have tried them all. From building brands to mindset and inner work to what to look for in your CBD, we are getting all the info on this episode. WELL Products was founded by Hannah Duncan, a prominent figure in the Spa Industry for over 15 years. Hannah specializes in working with clean products, with effective ingredients, that fit well within the Spa and Resort World. In 2018, as CBD began to be a larger discussion, Hannah began searching for a brand that could fulfill the needs of the hundreds of massage therapists that she works with. What she found was an industry that was lacking. Lacking in quality packaging, reliable sourcing, and efficacy. So, she decided to turn back to her roots of manufacturing and get it done. Hannah has infused each of the products with their own essential oils such as Lavender, Lemongrass, and Tea Tree – further suiting the Spa and Wellness Industry. All Well Products are made of Clean Ingredients, Vegan, Cruelty Free, Non-GMO, and Gluten Free. Did you enjoy this episode? I would love to hear your thoughts. The 4 Stages of a Business or Industry Lifecycle are Emergence - Growth - Maturity - Decline. Somewhere between Maturity and Decline, it must find a way to reinvent, reinvigorate itself to find a new way forward and start a new curve. If it fails, then the end is inevitable. The Spa Industry has Emerged and Grown. It is now at the Maturity stage. However, it is missing one of the key characteristics of a Mature industry. Namely, Consolidation. By and large, we are still a fragmented industry. That should represent an opportunity for consolidation, which it does. However, if the Industry is on the tail end of it's Maturity phase, as I would suggest it is, who is going to want to consolidate in a declining Industry? So what's the answer? Innovate, Tweak, Pivot, Reinvent. The COVID 19 crisis has not caused the Spa Industry's issues. But it has revealed them. Don't kid yourself that all will be ok if you can just survive this current COVID 19 downturn. Now, more than ever, the Spa Industry needs to find a new Industry Curve. #spaindustry #innovation #lifecycles
Are Spas Essential or Non-Essential? Are Spas a Luxury or a Budget purchase? I think if you asked most non-Spa people they would say Spas are a Non-Essential Luxury item. Is that how we actually want to be perceived as an industry? Many felt Spas got the short end of the stick when it came to re-opening after the COVID-19 lockdowns. But if we really are a Non-Essential Luxury Industry, what choice did the governments have? If the Spa Industry wants to change the way it is perceived, to change its identity, we need to look at what we do and say. What is the image portrayed in the Spa Media? What Spas are winning all the Spa Industry Awards? The answer - Non-Essential Luxury . Agree or Disagree? #spaindustry #spas #brandimage
As many countries around the world look to restart their economies and reopen businesses, we all want to know when our specific industry and business will get the green light. In recent weeks, many in the Spa Industry around the world have been asking me, 'When will Spas be able to reopen?' Sadly, I think Spas will be one of the last industries to reopen in many countries. We simple are not seen as an essential enough industry AND we are high contact...which means we are high risk in terms of this specific virus. As Adam Chatterley, Chair of the UK Spa Association said recently, 'Hope for the best, but plan for the worst'. #spas #reopening #postcovid19
Just as some new and interesting businesses will emerge from this current crisis, so too may entire industries. That's what happened with the Hotel Spa Industry after the Asian Financial Crisis of the mid 1990's. So start thinking about what industries you think might emerge from this crisis and see if you can find a way to either be part of those industries of the future or even their supporting industries. If you can, you should be able to find some exciting opportunities. #newbusinessopportunities #planning #innovativethinking
After several high-profile medical spa arrests in 2018 and 2019, attorneys from the business and health care law firm ByrdAdatto speak about what these incidents mean for medical spas going forward, as well as the easiest ways practices can stay on the right side of investigators. Note: There were some feedback issues during the live recording; we've smoothed out the audio problems as best we could, and they do clear up after the first few minutes.
University of Derby, UK has announced that they will be dropping their Spa Management degree courses, due to a steady decline in student numbers. On the other side of the world, Melbourne's RMIT University no longer offers its Master in Wellness degree. According the University of Derby, the Spa Industry is shifting to more industry-led qualifications. Maybe? Not sure? But the problem is, in many countries, the authorities and regulators do not accept Spa industry qualifications. Instead, they insist on recognised institutional degrees. The regulators say they require institutional qualifications. The institutions say they can't provide them. This looks like it's going to become a MASSIVE problem. #spamanagement #education #spaindustry #regulators Thanks to Amanda Pauley at Professional Beauty & Kathryn Dowthwaite-Blay for their contributions.
One of the last remaining consumer magazines for the Spa industry in Asia, AsiaSpa, has announced they have ceased operations, as of October 28th, 2019. The publisher of AsiaSpa, Blue Inc Media, is itself a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). SPH had a major management shakeup earlier this year. It would be easy to write this off as just another example of the changing face of the Media Industry. But could it also be a sign of the changing face of the Spa Industry too? #spaindustry #mediaindustry #publications
"How is marketing changing in this industry and how should it be changing to move into the future?" In Part 4 of my interview with Spa Executive, that's the question we tackled. For me, the future of Spa Marketing all about focussing on the creating & delivering elements of marketing, as opposed to the advertising & promotion elements - which is what we have traditionally done. If you want to read the full interview, you can find it - HERE #marketing #wants #needs #tomorrowspa #spa
In a follow up from Ep. #671 - where I shared my thesis that the Spa of Tomorrow will be only 20% of what we know a Spa to be today, with the other 80% being something completely different - today's question was... If you’re 20% massages and manicures and 80% business center, are you still a spa? The answer...Sure! Why not? We have very different definitions today of what a taxi service should be - thanks to Uber. We have very different definitions of the best form of management, of inclusion, of sustainability, etc. Is the Spa Industry really arrogant enough to believe that it shouldn't need to redefine itself? #reinventingorganizations #innovation #tomorrowspa #continuousdevelopment Here's a link to Ep. #672 where I expanded on my 20/80 Tomorrow Spa Thesis - https://www.linkedin.com/posts/trentmunday_hotelspa-tomorrowspa-spatrends-activity-6585168208528019456-DLqN
As of today, any cosmetic product being imported to China must undergo animal testing before it is approved for sale to humans. This of course is a major stumbling block for many International brands who have taken a strong Cruelty Free stance. There are some positive signs that the Government is open to alternatives. But for now at least, if your brand is against animal testing...China is not a market for you. #spachina #chinabeauty #animaltesting #cosmetic

Over 80% of all revenue from sales generated at www.findlawrence.com support these programs. Show Notes Lawrence and I begin the show reminiscing about chocolates, or rather how I first remember meeting Lawrence after he took my step class at the Reebok Sports Club, as it was known at the time. After class he gave me the most delicious chocolate truffles, and so of course from the very beginning he held a special place in my heart. Lawrence shares how he got into fitness out of necessity because he was the fat kid from Philly. His Father died when he was 18 and when the doctor said "you're next," Lawrence decided to make some changes, including beginning to workout, which led him into his career of fitness and wellness. Lawrence obtained his ACE Gold certification and started teaching in college while he was also working on his masters in communication. After college and while teaching part-time, Lawrence worked for American Airlines teaching their emergency procedures, which was amazingly and coincidentally related to fitness and health and the beginning of diversifying his career, which is a running theme throughout our conversation. We talk further about the importance of having diversity within what we offer, regardless of our career, and also the importance of seeing yourself as a business, even if you love what you are doing. Passion is wonderful, but passion alone does not pay the bills. Lawrence gives us a fantastic exercise to do so that we can look at where we spend our time and how that input of time is related to our output of income. Take out a pen and paper. Put all that you do in terms of where you place your focus in a row at the top of the page. Underneath each row put all the tasks that are associated with that item. List how much time is spent in each column. At the bottom of each row write down how much that particular project adds income to your bank account. Notice if where you spend most of your time also brings in most of your revenue, or is at least moving you closer to building a profitable business. Depending on the results it may be time to reevaluate how and where you place your focus and spend your time. Lawrence talks about the importance of having great mentors. He also goes a step further and believes we all need two mentors, one who is in the industry that you are working in, and one outside of the industry. One leads the way on “what to do” and the other leads the way on “how to be.” He also talks about how to reframe failures and rejection, and that when we hear the word, “no” that the reframe of the meaning is, “not yet.” Lawrence invites us to look at movement being mandatory and exercise as being optional. It is this reframe that will help the fitness industry reach the people, who in the past, may have felt as though they “failed at exercise.” This way we can help open their ears by using the word movement over exercise, and also open their hearts to happiness. He believes that we also need to create compelling experiences instead of simply teaching classes and executing exercise. Lawrence goes onto say that it should be our goal to make everyone feel successful. That the “s of experiences” is not only to build a community, transcend exercise and make everyone feel challenged but most of all help them to feel successful. It is then people will return, tell their friends, and then we have built a community, or a tribe a tri-mmunity, a combination of tribe and community. Towards the end of our conversation, Lawrence shares that he has three philosophies that he has honed from working in fitness. 1. Never burn your bridges. 2. Love is always the answer. Never Jealousy. Never greed. Never backstabbing. Never unfriendly competition. Love is always going to be the answer. 3. Stay true to who you are inside and never sell out. Stay true to yourself and listen to your inner voice. Wise words for sure.
“Tech monopolies tend not to fall like Rome. They fall like Venice. They’re still there, and no-one actually invades them, but the trade routes moved, the things that gave them power and wealth stop mattering, and they become just another city, and then a backwater.” @benedictevans on Twitter Perhaps the same analogy could be drawn with the Spa Industry? #businesscycle #businesslife #changingworld #innovate
Many of the founders who where there when the Spa Industry started to take shape 20+ years ago, are approaching retirement age. That might mean some good businesses are ripe for acquisition...and at a good price too. #spa #listening #mergersandacquisitions #consolidation
Episode #27 we talk about the ever-present but rarely discussed issue of Sexual Harassment! Spas offer intimate, even sensual treatments. It can be a fine and sometimes blurry line between intimate and sensual and sex. How do we protect our people?
In Episode #21 I pose the question - Is Wellness Killing the Spa Industry? Wellness is concept, not a place. And if wellness is everywhere, then why do we need to go to the spa to get our wellness fix?
Apple has said they’ll stop reporting on unit sales. They want to shift the focus to their services biz rather than the product biz. Why? Maybe coz their product is becoming commoditised. Just as spas are. #pivot #businessstrategy #innovation #spaindustry #apple
