Family Car Faceoff: 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV, 2025 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid — SUV or Sedan?

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 7, 2025 42:29

There was a time when the typical family car was a four-door sedan, not unlike the 2025 Hyundai Sonata. But then the SUV craze hit, and families defected to crossovers like the 2025 Mazda CX-90. So this week, we litigate this issue with road tests of the hybrid version of the Sonata and the plug-in hybrid version of the CX-90. Host Jack Nerad road-tested the 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus, a three-row SUV that blends a 323-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain with upscale features. Its e-Skyactiv PHEV system offers an estimated 26-mile all-electric range and a total range of 490 miles. Beyond its power and fuel economy, it features an eight-speed automatic transmission, several drive modes, and i-ACTIV all-wheel drive. Inside, the seven-passenger cabin features Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain's chairs, a 12.3-inch infotainment display, and a 12-speaker Bose system. A full suite of advanced safety features ensures peace of mind, while its 3,500-pound towing capacity adds versatility. Across the country, co-host Chris Teague spent a week behind the wheel of the 2025 Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid, a midsize sedan that combines style, comfort, and strong fuel economy. Powered by a 2.0-liter engine and electric motor that delivers torque through a six-speed automatic transmission, the handsome four-door delivers an impressive 47 mpg combined. Key features include a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, and leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats. From the tech perspective, the Sonata offers a 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bose premium audio, and a surround-view monitor. Advanced safety technologies such as forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision warning, and highway drive assist round out the package. So, which of these is the better family car, circa 2015? We'll share our thoughts. Turning to the news, we examine how tariffs are impacting U.S. car prices. While average prices rose only 0.8% year-over-year in April, tariffs have led to somewhat sharper increases on some imported vehicles. As pre-tariff inventory thins, supply is tightening, and affordable new cars are becoming harder to find, especially as models like the Nissan Versa exit the sub-$20,000 segment. We also take a look at AAA's newest survey, which shows consumer interest in EVs is declining. Only 16% of respondents said they would likely choose an EV for their next vehicle, while 63% are unlikely to do so. Top concerns include battery repair costs and high purchase prices, despite improving durability and falling prices in some EV segments. We'll give you our thoughts as well. In response to slowing demand, Lucid Motors is slashing prices on its 2025 Air lineup, offering up to $31,500 in savings on the Air Grand Touring. Other trims see discounts as well, as Lucid seeks to better compete with Tesla and other luxury EV makers. Finally, we highlight Volkswagen of America's celebration of International Volkswagen Bus Day. VW is restoring the 1977 T2 “magic bus” that survived Southern California's Palisades fire, honoring the VW bus legacy, from the classic T1 to today's all-electric ID. Buzz. This week's listener question comes from Ronald in Stockton, California, who asks: “I've had trouble with my windshield wipers over the years, and I'm wondering if I just don't replace them often enough. Do you have any thoughts on windshield wipers? Should I clean my windshield when I install them?” Chris and Jack will have the answers from the experts. Remember when car guys road tested cars? With the current crossover SUV craze in full swing, those days seem to be over, and who are we to say it's a bad thing. In this week's episode of *America on the Road*, host Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague take the wheels of two five-seat SUVs: the all-new and mass-market-priced 2025 Chevrolet Equinox and the premium-oriented 2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo S Premium. Chevrolet's 2025 Equinox enters its fourth generation with a tasteful redesign, both inside and out. Under the hood, it offers a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive models are paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), while all-wheel-drive versions feature an 8-speed automatic transmission. The interior shows it modernity, boasting an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen powered by Google . It also offers something the battery-electric version of the Equinox doesn't, and we'll tell you what that is, along with our overall review of the attractive SUV, in our road test segment. With a starting price around $28,600, the Equinox might well grab your attention. But how does it compare to the leaders in the compact SUV segment? We'll offer our opinions. While co-host Chris Teague was putting the Chevy Equinox to the test, host Jack Nerad was piloting a fascinating newcomer— the 2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo S Premium. A reasonably new Mazda nameplate, the CX-70 is a midsize SUV that doesn't shy away from performance. Equipped with a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine delivering 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, it offers a spirited driving experience. At least as spirited a a midsize crossover is likely to be. The handsome SUV features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, standard all-wheel drive, and a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. Inside, the CX-70 impresses with red Nappa leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. Additional amenities include a panoramic sunroof, a Bose 12-speaker audio system, and a comprehensive suite of safety features. Priced at $52,450, it positions itself as a high-value alternative to European luxury SUVs. But it does have a foible or two, which we'll describe in the road test segment. In the News Ram 1500 Express Returns: Ram announces the 2026 Ram 1500 Express, a value-focused pickup starting at $44,495, featuring bold styling and a choice between a 305-hp V6 or a 420-hp turbocharged I-6 engine. Mercedes-Benz Expands U.S. Production: Mercedes-Benz plans to produce a new vehicle at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant by 2027, aligning with its strategy to localize production amid rising U.S. tariffs. Congress Challenges California's Gasoline Vehicle Ban: The U.S. House of Representatives votes to repeal California's ban on gasoline car sales, sparking debates on consumer choice, environmental impact, and economic implications. Ford Cancels $10 Billion Software Initiative: Ford abruptly ends its ambitious FNV4 software project after significant investment, raising questions about the company's future in vehicle software development. Special Guest In this week's interview segment,Tyson Jominy, Vice President of Data and Analytics at J.D. Power, joins the show to discuss the impact of tariffs on the automotive industry and offers insights for consumers planning to purchase a vehicle this year. Thanks for joing America on the Road* for your weekly dose of expert reviews, industry news, and valuable insights to keep you informed on the latest in the automotive world. EV Powerfest: 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona, 2025 Polestar 3 Launch Edition

America on the Road

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2025 43:57

The 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona and the 2025 Polestar 3 Launch Edition are two of the quickest vehicles we've ever road-tested. Their sizzling 0-60-mile-per-hour times might also set your hair on fire. Yet, as quick as those two battery-electrics and as technologically savvy as they are, they are very different. That's what co-host Matt DeLorenzo and host Jack Nerad discovered as they tested the two vehicles this week. The 2025 Dodge Charger Daytona is a bold, all-electric muscle car featuring a sleek, aerodynamic design and cutting-edge technology. Built on Dodge's new STLA Large platform, it delivers up to 670 horsepower in its top performance trim, which allows the Daytona to rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just about 3 seconds. That heart-stopping go-power places it among the quickest modern performance cars. Its most controversial feature is the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust that delivers ersatz muscle car sounds, which thrilled one of our hosts and turned off the other. The 2025 Polestar 3 Launch Edition aims to redefine the luxury electric SUV with its minimalist Scandinavian styling, 489 horsepower, 620 lb-ft of torque, and all-wheel drive. Despite weighing over 5,000 pounds, it manages a brisk 0–60 mph time of about 4.5 seconds, helped by active air suspension and torque vectoring. Inside, it offers premium touches like ventilated Nappa leather seats, a panoramic glass roof, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and a slick Android Automotive OS with Google built-in. But is its reliance on the large 14.5-inch touchscreen for most functions distracting? Is its $88,100 price with options just too high? And will it be the victim of Chinese tariffs? Matt and Jack will have the answers. We have two great guests for you this week. Danielle Livingston is a marketing expert, and Jake Robin is a product expert on the brand-new Toyota 4Runner. Jack Nerad had a chance to chat with them recently about that very cool new SUV, so we're sure you'll enjoy what they have to say. We have an EV expert with us this week, so it's appropriate that we look at the current state of EVs in the United States and where the market might be headed. J.D. Power's E-Vision report is the source of our conversation starters. Of course, tariffs in the auto industry continue to grab headlines. Again this week, with veteran industry reporter Matt DeLorenzo aboard, we'll tell you what is real and what is hype and give you thoughts on how you should proceed if you're planning to buy a car. This week co-host Chris Teague and host Jack Nerad were up to their eyeballs in modern luxury. Teague had the honor of testing the newest model from the prestigious Genesis brand, while Nerad took the wheel of the performance version of the brand's dedicated battery-electric SUV. Both were equipped with the top-rated powertrains in each model's lineup, and both provided impressive eye candy both inside and out. The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Chris tested features a high-performance powertrain—a "twin-charged" V6 engine with both a turbocharger and an “electric supercharger,” delivering 409 horsepower. Inside, it swaps the standard GV80's three-row layout for a sportier two-row cabin, highlighted by a sweeping 27.0-inch digital display and racy design touches like a flat-bottomed steering wheel and metal-accented pedals. Nerad tested the 2025 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD, a small, battery-electric SUV built for enthusiasts, featuring dual motors that produce up to 429 horsepower—or 483 horsepower in Boost Mode. Powered by a 77.4 kWh battery and riding on Hyundai's E-GMP platform, it pairs sharp performance with high-end comfort, offering Nappa leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital cockpit, Bang & Olufsen audio, and cutting-edge tech like facial recognition and fingerprint authentication. With sleek touches like 21-inch wheels and a Vision Roof, it delivers both dynamic driving and premium convenience in a zero-emissions package. But at $72,000 as-tested is it a smart luxury-vehicle buy? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. We have a primo guest this week. Bob Broderdorf is the chief executive officer of the Jeep brand and he has also served in top positions with Ram and Dodge. With the American car market in turmoil recently, he will describe how the legendary Jeep brand is making its way forward. We think you'll enjoy the discussion he had with host Jack Nerad. In the news this week, Nissan has announced some new products for North America as it tries to shore up its position here in the United States. We'll have details. Hyundai has just announced that it is making a huge investment in U.S. manufacturing and parts operations, and it includes the establishment of new plant that is likely the first in decades. We'll have more on that. Porsche is upping its tech game, perhaps in response to the BMW announcement we told you about last week. Performance enthusiasts and luxury SUV shoppers have two compelling new options to consider in the automotive landscape. We take a deep dive into the track-focused 2025 Subaru WRX TS and the premium 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV, exploring what makes each vehicle unique in today's market. The WRX TS emerges as Subaru's answer to drivers seeking track-day thrills in a practical sedan package. With its aluminum hood and fenders, gold Brembo brakes, and moonroof delete, this performance-oriented trim delivers the genuine WRX experience with enhanced capabilities. The 271-horsepower turbocharged boxer engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission offers an increasingly rare connection between driver and machine. Inside, Recaro seats hold you firmly through corners while the new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster displays performance data to satisfy data-hungry enthusiasts. At $45,750, the TS positions itself competitively against rivals like the Golf R and GR Corolla.Shifting gears completely, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 showcases a different automotive philosophy—luxury, efficiency, and distinctive styling. This two-row SUV borrows the platform of its CX-90 sibling but eliminates the third row for enhanced cargo capacity. The PHEV model combines a 2.5-liter engine with electric components to deliver 323 horsepower and exceptional fuel economy (up to 56 mpg when fully charged). The copper exterior paired with red Nappa leather interior creates a bold aesthetic statement, while quilted seats and high-quality materials elevate the cabin experience. The nostalgia factor drives deep connections as visitors reminisce about cars from their past – whether personally owned, admired from afar, or part of family history. The Houston auction, happening April 3-5 at NRG Center, will feature approximately 1,000 vehicles including several standout offerings. A 1963 Chevy II Nova convertible with dark blue exterior and baseball glove leather interior promises to turn heads, while Corvette enthusiasts will appreciate several examples including a rare 2019 ZR1. Second-generation Ford GTs from 2005-2006 continue showing strong market performance and will likely command significant attention. We also take the 2025 Mazda CX-70 PHEV for a test drive. I stedet for prisnedsættelser tilføjes ekstraudstyr uden merpris, bl.a. – dog først i 2027. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Over the Xmas break I drove the top line Genesis GV80 AWD SUV with 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 linked to an 8-speed automatic and limited slip rear differential. Now at around $135,000 drive-away it jumps off the mark with strong performance despite a rather hefty weight, feels absolutely bulletproof, super quiet and despite its dimensions shrinks around you when pushed hard thanks to its road preview electronic adaptive suspension. This sophisticated suspension was refined last year to delete pitch on rough surfaces with a less figidity ride. Safety wise, 10 airbags in total but disappointingly, the head airbags don’t extend to the third-row seats. The luxury equipment extensive, a recent mid-life update saw the price climb however a previous $10,500 option pack including heated and ventilated rear seats, power rear door shades, 3 zone climate control, and a Nappa leather appointed interior is now standard. Quality and fit and finish as good if not better than the dearer top-class German SUV’s. Genesis owner support impressive - a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, five-years complimentary servicing including valet pick-up and return, 10-year 24/7 roadside assistance and 10-year map updates. The wagon version tested here was joined earlier this year by a more sporty looking Coupe. I’m David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the most buzzworthy vehicle to hit American highways this decade. Combining the exterior style of the classic Microbus with the chassis of a thoroughly modern electric vehicle, the ID.Buzz is a crowd-pleaser that stops traffic, as Host Jack Nerad discovered during his two weeks with the vehicle. Its exterior design features LED lighting, retro-inspired wheels, and optional two-tone paint that pays homage to its iconic predecessor. But the drivetrain is anything but retro. The ID.Buzz is powered by a 91-kWh battery and offers two drivetrain configurations: rear-wheel-drive with 282 horsepower and an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles and 4Motion all-wheel-drive with 335 horsepower and a range of 231 miles. Charging is efficient, with DC fast charging replenishing 10-80% in just 26 minutes. Inside, the ID. Buzz boasts a spacious and customizable interior, offering up to 145.5 cubic feet of cargo space, flexible seating, and advanced technology, including a 12.9-inch infotainment display, IQ.Drive driver assistance, and wireless charging. It's a stark contrast to Nerad's 1968 Type 2 “Early Bay” Bus, powered by a 57-horsepower 1600cc engine that delivered a 0-60 mph time of 37 seconds and a top speed of 65 mph. But is the ID.Buzz as good a value as that long-gone college-era VW? Nerad will have the answer. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will have the answer on the all-new 2025 Ford Ranger. A finalist for North American Truck of the Year, the Ranger boasts a new engine that makes it much more competitive versus rivals that include the Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma. Teague is a Toyota fan, but does he see the Ranger as the better midsize truck? He'll give his verdict in this episode. Driving News Our look at Driving News this week features a headline-grabbing development that could reshape the industry. Nissan and Honda, two global giants with big U.S. footprints, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a potential integration. If it goes forward, this partnership could see the companies combining their efforts in electrification, platform sharing, and advanced vehicle intelligence. With plans for a joint holding company by 2026, this is a story with far-reaching implications for drivers everywhere. In more amusing news, Hyundai has achieved an incredible and largely esoteric feat with its Ioniq 5 electric vehicle, earning a Guinness World Records title for the greatest altitude change ever by an electric car. Over 14 grueling days, the Ioniq 5 covered more than 4,900 kilometers across India, traveling from the Himalayas' highest drivable point to below sea level in Kerala. But what does this record prove? Jack and Chris will offer their opinions. Switching gears to luxury, Jack and Chris will also offer their opinions on the 2025 Genesis G80 3.5T Sport Prestige AWD, a sedan that blends advanced technology, stunning design, and exceptional performance. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V6, the G80 delivers a smooth, refined ride while packing a punch under the hood. Inside, it's all about premium touches, from Nappa leather seating to a cutting-edge OLED instrument cluster. Our two reporters will deliver their verdicts in this show This week's guest is Brian Jannusch, a Nissan GT-R expert with a passion for the legendary sports car. From its iconic engineering to his quest to drive one at the Nurburgring, Brian shares fascinating insights into what makes the GT-R so special. It's a conversation that will resonate with sports car fans and anyone who appreciates automotive excellence. The episode also tackles practical advice with safety tips for 2025 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As the year begins, it's a good time to revisit basics like seatbelt use, sober driving, and staying alert on the road. Simple steps can make a big difference in preventing accidents and keeping your loved ones safe.

The Acura ZDX Type S is the brand's most powerful SUV, offering a performance-tuned dual-motor AWD powertrain with an estimated 500 horsepower. But how will it contend with late fall in the great state of Maine? Co-host Chris Teague found out this week, and he'll share his findings in this episode. Priced from around $70,000, the ZDX Type S features height-adjustable air suspension, adaptive dampers, and Brembo brakes. Its muscular stance is enhanced by 22-inch wheels and available high-performance summer tires. But summer tires weren't especially appropriate as Maine threw a wintery mix of snow and sleet at Teague as he drove Acura's new battery-electric SUV built by General Motors. In fact, it includes Acura's Hands Free Cruise (GM SuperCruise) and Automatic Parking Assist technologies alongside the AcuraWatch 360+ safety suite. How did the ZDX fare in Maine's difficult conditions? Teague will have a full report. In our other road test this week, host Jack Nerad reveled in his time behind the wheel of the Genesis G70 sports sedan. The test model was the top-end G70 AWD 3.3T Sport Prestige trim that delivers a blend of luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology at a surprisingly reasonable price of $53,350, including a $1,250 destination charge. Powered by a robust 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the sedan boasts Brembo brakes and an electronically controlled suspension, making it feel delightfully agile. The Sport Prestige package enhances the sleek sedan's appeal with Nappa leather seating, heated rear seats and steering wheel, a head-up display, a surround-view monitor, and a power trunk lid. Standard features include forward collision avoidance and blind-spot monitoring, a 10.25-inch multimedia display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a premium 15-speaker Lexicon audio system, and conveniences like heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and wireless charging. How much did Nerad love it? He'll tell you in this report. This week, Volkswagen and Rivian entered into a strategic partnership, and we'll tell you what that could mean for each brand. For one of them, it could mean survival in the increasingly hostile EV landscape. Honda has pulled the wraps off the new 2026 Passport SUV, and it is the most rugged Honda we've seen yet. The TrailSport version boasts an off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance, and steel skid plates. And for those who are rock crawling or dodging tree stumps, the TrailSport Elite offers the TrailWatch camera system, assiting drivers in seeing what they should be missing. We'll give you more details and our reactions. Waymo is expanding its robotaxi effort in Los Angeles while Tesla is facing regulatory hurdles in its own robotaxi initiative. We'll have more on that as self-driving technology heats up. While we're speaking of technology, one prominent player suggests automakers say goodbye to the cloud and embrace onboard computing and tech. We'll have more on that fascinating development. Our guest this week is equally fascinating. Srini Rajagopalan is head of OEM Customer Success at J.D.Power and an expert in the electric vehicle space. For the 2024 model year, Mercedes-AMG is upgrading the performance-oriented GLS 63 three-row SUV by adding to its generous list of standard equipment. If you think a performance-oriented three-row SUV is sort of a silly idea, well, you probably haven't driven a GLS 63. But co-host Chris Teague has, and he reports on all the details of his weeklong stint in the flagship of the AMG SUV family. The 2024 GLS 63 gets new appearance items inside and out — a new rear light signature and a Nappa leather-cover instrument panel among the new features. It also has been endowed with a newly standard panoramic sliding sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, adaptive high-beam headlights, selectable AMG Performance exhaust system, Burmester surround sound system, 360-degree surround view system and blind spot assist. Of course, the heart of the GLS 63 is under the hood, where lies the handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine that produces 603 horsepower. For use in the big SUV, it has been systematically electrified with a 48-volt auxiliary on-board electrical system and integrated starter generator. The result of this mild-hybrid system is even smoother and more powerful drivability. Chris Teague will tell you the rest in this episode. While Teague was testing the $150,000+ AMG GLS 63, Host Jack Nerad was behind the wheel of the 2024 Mazda Mazda 3 Turbo. While it seems the co-host got the best of it, Nerad found there was nothing shabby about the performance or equipment of the $36,000 Mazda3. In an ocean of compact cars, the hatchback stands out for its premium looks, exquisite interior, and fun-to-drive persona. No, its 256 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel-drive give it a verve that few compacts can match. And we'll have other thoughts coming up in this episode. In this week's news segment, Stellantis, the owners of the Jeep, RAM Truck, Dodge, and Chrysler brands, is trying to stave off rumors that it will merge with France-based Renault. We'll tell you more about that and its implications coming up. Ford is facing disruptions to the product of its F-150 and F-150 Lightning pickup trucks, which could cost you if you're seeking a new Ford truck. And while Toyota has not been bullish about electric vehicles, it has just announced a giant new EV production facility to be based in Kentucky. We'll have more on both stories. We are also sad to report the imminent demise of yet another legendary vehicle. We'll tell you what it is and when it goes away in this week's show. This week, our special guest is Katelyn Salzman, Lexus expert on the all-new Lexus GX SUV. Host Jack Nerad recently had a chance to drive the GX and then sat down with her to discuss the details of what is a more exciting vehicle than ever before. We think you'll enjoy our conversation. Over the last several years, I don't think there is anyone who has not been touched by loss or some kind of grief.  Today's guest, author, and literary agent Mike Nappa is incredibly familiar with loss and living with grief. In 2016, he lost his beloved wife, Amy, to cancer. In his learning how to live life without her, God has shown him why grieving is such an important part of losing a loved one. As Mike says, he learned how to cry into his keyboard and produced one of the most poignant books that bears witness to grief that I have ever personally encountered. It is called Reflections for the Grieving Soul: Meditations and Scripture for Finding Hope After Loss.   We are often so uncomfortable with grief and treat it like it is a problem to be solved. However, God Himself, in all three persons of the Trinity, grieves, and we are made in His image. It isn't sinful to grieve. Mike says: “There are things in this world worth loving enough to grieve, and if we don't grieve well, we are taking away from the image of God within us.” Although, as we'll discuss in this episode, there are ways to grieve well and there are also ways to grieve poorly and even destructively.  The depths of grief isn't a place where we want to live permanently, but we have to hold space for it or it will make itself known in other ways. When we don't walk this journey, we miss out on the blessings for those who mourn.   There are quite a few tears shed during this episode, but honest, perhaps blessed, tears. I would like to offer this episode as a benevolent witness and comfort to whoever might need it in this season. The Lord promises blessing and comfort for us, dear ones. He is near to you. this is a comedy ""podcast"" btw believe it or not. It is a joke, it is parody, it is satire. It is not serious; it is not meant to be taken seriously. I do not condone the physical harming or even light harassment of real estate agents in any way shape or form. Do not call, text, or email Jeffrey Doussan or Keller Williams of New Orleans. Do not write funny bad reviews on yelp or google or furnished finder. Do not send pipe bombs or bomb threats to his house or any of his listed properties. I mean it! If you do any of these things you will be banned from podcasts forever. Thank you enjoy the show. Looking at rentals is really fun cuz real estate agents and property managers are some of the most redacted and oblivious people you have to trust with your livelihood. Recently I had scheduled to see a place and the guy no showed, no contact I messaged and emailed him multiple times and 3 days later he texted "apologies out of town." He then proceeds to try to reschedule immediately for the next day at 11am I say can we do 2pm he says no we can't let's do Monday 2pm I say okay Monday 2pm he says great I say great and then he says actually we can do tomorrow Friday 2pm i say perfect cool then Friday at 11am he says you must think we're crazy but we're actually just short-handed can you do monday 2pm and then i showed up today Monday at 2pm and the guy is 10 minutes late, I text the guy and he said "oh Philip's not there?" Philip the minion shows up within 1 minute of me texting, Philip says haha it's good thing our office is right around the corner and he points to a building literally right behind the rental and gives me the dorkiest fcking smile and I want to drown Philip in a puddle. We go to open the door and he doesn't have the right keypad code. I stand around in the rain for about 5 minutes while he calls and texts people and then he's like oh we can just try the other side of the duplex and I asked if the other side is the same layout and price and furnishings and he said no so I said no and so we sat in the rain for another 5 minutes and he finally gets the code and we go in. It looks like the last tenant had just left, all the lights and tvs are on and trash cans full, poop splatters on the toilet and it smells like cat piss. Despite this, I message the property manager that I am interested and would like to move forward with my application and he likes my message and says nothing else. $1400/month. a few years ago, a property manager was stunned that I requested to inspect the house before signing a legal document that said we conducted an inspection and told me I was the first person to ever do so. He addressed me as "Gay bro" in a text and it was never acknowledged $1754/month 440 sq feet #italiano #realestateagent #propertymanagement When you were investing in real estate, I studied the blade. We're giving you a house. It's real estate. Free. It's a free house for you, Jim. This is free real estate! You gotta bring furniture, but the house is free! Two bedrooms, no rugs. It's free! One of the struggles that hit every family in some way is when you lose someone you love. Today's guest, Mike Nappa, lost his beloved wife, Amy, to cancer in 2016. In the years since her passing God has helped him to learn why grieving is such an important part of losing a loved one and how He's taught him how to grieve well.  This is one of the most touching and informative interviews I've done.  Mike has such a heart for those who are walking their own grief journey, and he truly wants to help those who are hurting as well as those who are trying to be there for them and understand their pain and what they need. He shares what one friend does for him every year on the anniversary of his wife's death (which, by the way is September 11) and why that has helped him to not only grieve that day well but also to look forward to it. Mike also talks about how his then three-year-old granddaughter struggled with her own grief and how one teacher recognized and helped her deal with her grief in the middle of a meltdown. He also gives wise advice to someone who is in the depth of despair in their grief journey. Before I interviewed Mike, I asked my mom if she had any questions she'd like me to ask him since she's not quite three years out from losing my dad. He was genuinely happy to answer her question. Mike truly is one of the nicest guys I've ever had the pleasure of talking to and I know our conversation will be a blessing to you. How do you move forward after deep loss? How do you avoid growing angry with God? Mike Nappa served in ministry for years and co-authored a number of books with his wife, Amy, before losing her to cancer in 2016. In response to this loss, Mike wrote his newest book, Reflections for the Grieving Soul. In this important conversation you will not learn to “get over grief," to “shorten the stages of grief,” or anything of the sort. Instead, you will learn the healthy practice of grieving well as Nappa aims to create a safe spaces for people to walk through sorrow towards lasting healing.

You may find yourself somewhere you didn't expect—drowning, kicking, or screaming—long after your loss. You may feel unable to talk to others—or to God. Widower and author Mike Nappa knows how it feels. Even though it may not feel like it, grief can be a source of great hope. The way that we react against what is wrong comes from a deep desire for things to be made right. Our loss may actually lead to healing and restoration. The Bible assures us that better days are coming when God Himself will wipe every tear from our eyes. “There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,” it says in Revelation, “for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4) Our guests this week have walked through deep and unexpected grief and what even seemed like unfair losses. Best-selling Christian author Philip Yancey uncovered a shocking secret about his father's death while he was still in college, one that illuminated the sometimes overbearing religious convictions of his mother. Yancey shares how he dove into his family's origins and how he ultimately found healing from what he calls “toxic faith.” After nearly thirty years of marriage, author Mike Nappa lost his dear wife, Amy, to cancer. Mike turned to scripture to help him get through the day and to cope with processing his grief—and even today, he sees how grief and joy can coexist.   Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Eddie Montgomery Upcoming interview: Leslie Schilling Samaritan's Purse: https://sampur.se/44HesSt  Revelation 21:3-4 NIV   Philip Yancey Christianity Today magazine  The Jesus I Never Knew What's So Amazing About Grace? And then one day you wake up and wonder, Is this just a learned behavior pattern that I have, or is it genuine? Am I really connecting to the God of the universe?“ - Philip Yancey “I started looking for people who were made larger by their faith.“ - Philip Yancey “Don't just give up on God because of the way God may have been presented to you. It's worth that quest to try to find who God really is and to find that God loves you. And God indeed does imagine a role for you on this earth that no one else has. That's why we were created. We were created in God's image to reflect something of God back to others.” - Philip Yancey “There's nothing that you can do to get God to love you more. No amount of spiritual calisthenics, no amount of trying to be more spiritual than everybody else—there's nothing you can do for God to love you less.” - Philip Yancey “God wants to remake us in a way that's good for us. God wants to restore us. God wants to give us a calling, a reason for being, a reason to live on this planet, and grace is the attitude that God has toward us all the time.” - Philip Yancey “I understand that God is really who He said He was, just like I thought He was before, in the moments of great joy and in the moments of great sorrow. And He is always near in the moments of great joy, and when it gets hard, He doesn't step back and run away. He'll just stand there and stay with you.” - Mike Nappa  “The grief that we have is not something to be thrown aside any more than love would be thrown aside. The grief that we have is something to visit and understand and take value and take benefit from.” - Mike Nappa “I don't have to be consumed by grief. It can just be part of who I am as I also experience joy and happiness.” - Mike Nappa ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Then, author Mike Nappa and Bill have a great conversation around studying the Bible.  Mike's book Bible-Smart: Matthew Q&A for the Curious is an invitation to sit down together and talk about honest questions everyone has about the Bible. Listen - All Might is not beating Goku, or any Saiyan (except for Pan...for now...), so we let him pick on some people his own size. We've seen power scaling for how the mighty All Might compares to the villains in My Hero Academia, but Dragon Ball is absolutely on another level, so the humans are a better comparison! Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!
A Sober Mom in the Wine Mom Culture with Adrienne Stillman Krausz

Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

My guest this week is Adrienne Stillman Krausz, a lady with a very sophisticated palate.  Her passion for fine food and wine began when she lived in Paris during her formative years.  Adrienne went to college in the US but while her fellow students were downing beers and jello shots she was heading downtown to drink expensive craft cocktails. She lives in the Nappa valley with her husband Jake who is a 2nd generation wine maker and as a couple they turned their talents to the alcohol free space. In this episode I think Adrienne is quite unique in that she has "a foot in both camps" as she puts it I love the way that together with her husband they are busy sourcing and curating the very best AF products – with the same care that would go into fine wines As they say on their website they believe that everyone deserves a good drink, whether it has alcohol or not! Adrienne admits that she did sometimes go overboard on the craft cocktails and as a newly married couple two bottles of wine was the norm most evenings She did begin to feel the after effects of that wine in the morning and never really bounced out of bed feeling great As they started to think about having a family Adrienne stopped drinking during the week However that meant that the weekend drinking affected her more Coping with fertility problems led Adrienne to give up drinking completely She also had to give up eating various foods with led to bouts of FOMO when she was socialising She got a taste of what us ex drinkers go through in early sobriety! Happily Adrienne became a mom and now has a 9 month old baby That's when she noticed the mommy juice culture Hanging out with some other moms she was surprised to hear plans to drop off the babies and so they could drink some cocktails She noticed that some wine brands were targeting moms and we agreed that wine was sometimes seen as a “parenting aid” Mommyjuice gives our children the message that it's so difficult looking after them that we need wine – not to mention the more general message that we use wine as a coping mechanism Adrienne's interest in alcohol free drinks began when she met a sober coach who recommended that she try them. She was very sceptical and her expectations were low – she couldn't really see the point However when she started tasting the various choices she was blown away by the quality Together with her husband they started researching – and were both inspired. She feels that the US is just scratching the surface but there is a lot of innovation going on Adrienne and her husband concluded that there were some great choices available but that the AF space was difficult for the consumer to navigate – so they decided to become “curators. They would be retailers of alcohol free drinks but only of drinks that they had sampled and enjoyed They would be two experts providing advice and education around their products They launched the Dry Goods Beverage Company in Summer of 2021. Their best sellers are the alcohol free wines and she particularly recommended Copenhagen sparkling teas – perfect as an aperitif as its crisp and refreshing. Adrienne explained that these teas provide the depth and nuance that the AF wines sometimes lack She also reminded us that AF spirits should always be mixed rather than drunk neat.  That's why the cocktail recipes are so important. We had the pleasure of interviewing Josh Lovelace of Young Folks and NEEDTOBREATHE over Zoom video.Moonwalking, Young Folk's (aka Josh Lovelace) third release, is a modern pop infused take on his unique brand of family style Americana. The album features ten brand new songs created to spark imagination and happiness. Lovelace, a member of the Grammy nominated rock band NEEDTOBREATHE, released his debut family album Young Folk in 2017 and followed that with the rave reviewed Growing Up in 2019. After five years of creating a unique space in the kids and family scene, this will be his first release under the moniker Young Folk. A lifelong appreciator of kid's music, on Moonwalking he illustrates why it's more important than ever to create a space where thoughtful content is being made just for today's youth. Young Folk sets out to provide a warm and welcoming place for families to connect, unwind, laugh and enjoy each other. After spending more time at home and less on the road these past couple years, Lovelace was blessed with the opportunity be fully immersed in his family life, inspiring this collection. These new songs come from those real life moments where you slow down, take a look around and see the world through your child's eyes. Both tender and sometimes silly, it's a slice of life captured in memorable songs and relatable lyrics all delivered with his kind and gentle voice. Self-produced and recorded in his studio in Knoxville, Tennessee, Moonwalking provides a perfect playlist for family time.
