"The History and Geopolitics of the World's Oceans"
"Half of planet Earth is still completely unexplored...and nobody seems to be paying attention." When Victor Vescovo learned in 2016 that nobody had been to the deepest point of four of the five's oceans, he was flabbergasted...and he was up for the challenge. Victor had earned his pilot's license at only nineteen, and he had spent much of his life pursuing adventure. He was one of the only people in the world to complete the Explorer's Grand Slam, during which he climbed to the highest peak on every continent and skied to both Poles. But he had never been far below the surface - and he quickly became obsessed with the idea. He assembled a world class crew and tasked them with an extremely ambitious mission: Build a deep-sea submersible more durable, safe, and sturdy than anything in existence. Previously, subs had been built to survive one deep-sea dive. But Victor's team needed to figure out a way to replicate it - for at least five dives - if they wanted a shot at breaking this record. And the mission wasn't purely adventure for adventure's sake. The ocean's depths are quickly becoming more and more critical for climate change science, species conservation, and more, and Victor knew that the science to be found under the surface was something that could be life-changing for the entire globe. Riveting, inspiring, and terrifying all at once, Victor's story will take you deeper into the truth about our planet than anybody has ever been. Hello, and welcome to another episode of the podcast. Today I have an interview with Spearfisherwoman and Ocean Evangelist Valentine Thomas. Valentine was born in Montreal and trained as a lawyer in Canada, then worked in finance in London. Dissatisfied with her work in law and finance, Valentine was introduced to spearfishing while on holiday in Ibiza. The ocean - which she once feared - became her greatest passion, and she made fishing and diving her life's work. Today on the podcast, we talk about spearfishing, tips for eco-friendly seafood choices, her cookbook Good Catch: A Guide to Sustainable Fish and Seafood with Recipes from the World's Oceans, and recipes from the cookbook for canned sardines, the best tartar sauce, gummy bears using fish scales, fish, and pancakes, as well as fish head nachos. The frequency with which we buy new clothes, wash and care for them and design clothes all contribute to this problem. But many environmental advocates say that the greatest responsibility of addressing this pollution is on manufacturers, not individuals, and that finding ways to design and manufacture clothes without petrochemicals is what's needed. Reset learns about the scope of this problem, the way microplastics harm aquatic and human life and what can be done about it with Andrea Densham, senior strategic advisor with Alliance for the Great Lakes and Karen Weigert, director of Loyola University Chicago's Baumhart Center for Social Enterprise and Responsibility

Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, and are home to some of the tiniest creatures on the planet (single-celled organisms), to some of the largest (the blue whale). How can we keep this amazing environment clean, healthy, and thriving for our world? Steve Creech, President of the Wyland Foundation, shares some ideas of how they are helping the oceans and leaves us with a few suggestions of how you can help, too.
In our latest episode, co-hosts Peter Ravella and Tyler Buckingham welcome Yi Liu and Dr. Keith Moore as our guests to discuss their recent paper, "Climate change could cause 'disaster' in the world's oceans: Deep overturning circulation collapses with strong warming." In the paper, Yi and Keith analyze projections from 36 climate models and find that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and the Southern Meridional Overturning Circulation could slow by as much as 42% by 2100, and under worst-case warming, the SMOC could cease entirely by 2300. They explain that this could lead to a "climate disaster similar in magnitude to complete melting of the ice sheets on land." They also discuss the importance of overturning circulation in the ocean, and how it acts as a "solubility pump" and "biological pump" that helps remove CO2 from the atmosphere and supports marine ecosystems. They also stress the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to prevent the complete shutdown of deep circulation in the future. Join us as we delve into the science behind this groundbreaking research and its potential implications for our planet.

In this special episode, we sat down with Bruce Jones, senior fellow at the Brookings Institute and author of “To Rule the Waves: How Control of the World's Oceans Shapes the Fate of the Superpowers.” He sheds light on how, in history, naval power translated to world power, how that's playing out now between the United States and China, and how the cold reaches of the Arctic are becoming the next geopolitical flash point. Jones said: “It's very striking when you look back at the history of empires in the modern period. And what you see is that for most of the last several hundred years, the state or empire or nation that was able to most successfully dominate world affairs was the state or nation or empire that had the largest and most effective navy in the world. For a brief period, that was the Portuguese. For a long period, it was the British. Over the last 100 years or so, it's been the United States. And it matters because so much of world trade moves by the oceans. So much of how we live our lives is shaped by commerce across and underneath the oceans. Just think about digital communications, which is central to everything we do now—modern finance, modern social media, everything else. Ninety-three percent of all data in the world moves on undersea cables. About 85 percent of world trade moves by ocean-going containership and bulk carrier. So if you can dominate the world's oceans, it really gives you an extraordinary influence on global affairs.” As for the Arctic, Jones pointed out there's a lot at stake: “Now, if you think about it from a trade perspective, the distance between Shanghai and New York, if you can sail the Arctic route, is about half the distance if you have to go through the Suez Canal, across the Mediterranean, and then across the Atlantic Ocean. So it has the potential to dramatically cut trade times with dramatic savings. It was similar in nature to what the Suez Canal did to trade between Asia and Europe when it was first established. So it has the potential to be a major change in global commercial routes. That's one. Two, with warming waters, it's more easy to access the energy reserves that are underneath the Arctic Sea, on the continental shelf off the coast of Russia, which are huge. The largest gas find in the world recently was in those waters, in Russian waters, in the Arctic Sea and the Barents Sea. So there are huge commercial stakes. There are huge energy stakes, there are huge fishing stakes. And of course, there are strategic stakes. This is where Russia now has the largest concentration of its naval power.” “The United States has begun to return nuclear submarines to the Arctic for the first time since the end of the Cold War. China is deploying repeated scientific missions, which are, you know, frequently dual use. And so this is really becoming a zone of tense military buildup,” he added. ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

In this delightfully modern episode of Travels Through Time we are setting sail for an adventure on the high seas. Our guest is David Bosco, author of The Poseidon Project, The Struggle to Govern the World's Oceans, in which he charts the efforts of international organisations to create consensus and establish a structure of globally recognised rules for the oceans. In this episode David takes us back to 1982, a fraught year on the high seas when Britain was battling Argentina in the South Atlantic for control of the Falkland Islands and the waters around them. In the Arctic, a British adventurer had just completed the famous Northwest Passage. He did so just as disagreement between Canada and the United States over the legal status of the Passage became acute. Meanwhile, final preparations were underway for the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. But there was a cloud over the celebrations—the world's leading maritime power, the United States, had decided not to sign. Oceans cover about 71% of the earth's surface. Can something so vast and fluid be governed? Humanity has long attempted to create rules for the oceans of the world while honoring the “freedom of the seas” — a maritime principle first introduced in 1609 that stresses the freedom to navigate the oceans in times of peace. But as David Bosco describes in his latest book, The Poseidon Project: The Struggle to Govern the World's Oceans, building effective ocean rules while preserving maritime freedoms remains a daunting task. Bosco addresses past and present maritime disputes and developing tensions around ocean governance. Past wars, new environmental concerns, and the expanded reach of national governments into oceans have all contributed to the erosion of freedom of the seas. Episode 27: In this episode, host Angie Gust, talks about some amazing aspects of mushrooms. In addition to being able to break down plastics and other pollutants, many mushrooms are good for your health. Some of the edible mushrooms with health benefits are Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga, Cordyseps, and Turkey Tail. In terms of the environment, in May, the International Energy Agency (IEA) published its first-ever detailed blueprint for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, which it said was “compatible” with the 1.5C limit. They said, “Beyond projects already committed as of 2021, there are no new oil and gas fields approved for development in our [NZE] pathway, and no new coal mines or mine extensions are required.” Post-pandemic plans aimed at a greener recovery have been moving forward in several European countries, with Germany and France applying for funds under an EU scheme. Defending Public Lands / Beyond the Headlines / Ocean Warming Speeding Up / Youth Activists Call for a Minnesota Green New Deal / Brazil's President Targets Amazon / An Amazon Tribe Turns to Modern Technology to Save Their Trees In this episode we hear how protections for the Amazon Rainforest and its indigenous peoples are being weakened by Brazil's new president, Jair Bolsonaro. And new data shows the Earth's oceans are warming much more rapidly than previously reported. That means rising sea levels, stronger storms, and more intense droughts. Also, youth activists in Minnesota aren't waiting for a national Green New Deal. They're working with the state government on moving the state away from fossil fuels, while creating clean energy jobs and other sustainable economic growth. The push for a Green New Deal in Minnesota and more, next time on Living on Earth from PRI.

Scientists have found that most parts of the world's oceans are damaged. Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia conducted an analysis of marine wilderness around the world. They determined how 15 human activities, including fishing and commercial shipping, and four factors related to climate change, like ocean acidification and sea level increase, affect each part of the ocean. Oceans experiencing less than 10% of these activities or factors qualified as wilderness. Findings revealed that areas of wilderness are mostly found in the polar regions, specifically in the Arctic and the Antarctic, and around Pacific Island nations. Even so, lead researcher Kendall Jones pointed out that majority of the countries still have traces of wilderness. Because of the negative effects of human activities, only 13.2% of the world's oceans can be classified as wilderness. Unfortunately, only 4.9% of this marine wilderness remains protected. Jones added that unprotected areas of wilderness are susceptible to depletion. These areas will continue to face threats as they get more exposed to human activities brought about by factors like melting sea ice and cutting-edge fishing technologies. Currently, efforts to preserve the remaining wilderness are being carried out. A campaign led by environmental organization Greenpeace aims to protect the polar waters in Antarctica by creating a network of ocean sanctuaries where harmful human activities are not allowed. Several fishing companies have vowed to support the said campaign. These companies have also agreed to stop their operations in the region, especially in areas with a lot of wildlife.
