Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Special Episode. The chilling reality of healthcare professionals who turn into serial killers is both alarming and rare. Among the most notorious is Dr. Michael Swango, an American physician whose nickname, "Dr. Death," is a grim reflection of his deeds. Swango was convicted of poisoning up to 60 patients between 1981 and 1997. Despite his academic brilliance—he was valedictorian of his high school and earned his MD from Southern Illinois University, Swango betrayed his medical oath, using his position to murder unsuspecting patients. His crimes went undetected for years, and after being convicted, he fled to Zimbabwe, continuing his killing spree. Eventually, the FBI arrested him, and Swango now serves a life sentence without parole, a dark testament to the perversion of trust in the medical profession. Get more details about this and other stories simply by following us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and most all social media platforms. Bruce Sackman, a retired Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, was instrumental in the investigation that led to Swango's capture. Sackman discusses the case and the special team of professionals he led to catch healthcare workers who were serial killers. Swango's case was groundbreaking, revealing the hidden threat within healthcare. The full interview is available as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website, or most major podcast platforms. The Unexpected Danger: Serial Killers in Healthcare Health professionals who murder are not common, but they exist more often than most would imagine. Medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers, are trusted with patients' lives and are expected to uphold the highest standards. Yet, some have used their positions to kill. Studies suggest that healthcare workers are disproportionately represented among serial killers, with an estimated 1 in 10 serial killers being from the healthcare field. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. For more news and updates, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and numerous other social media platforms. Harold Shipman: The Deadliest Doctor One of the most infamous cases is that of Harold Shipman, a British doctor who was convicted of killing 15 patients, though he is believed to have murdered up to 250 people. Shipman, a trusted family doctor, administered lethal doses of diamorphine to his patients during home visits. Despite growing suspicions, he evaded detection for years, leaving a horrifying trail of death in his wake. H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer Doctor Another notorious figure is Herman Mudgett, better known as Dr. H.H. Holmes, one of America's first serial killers. Holmes, a medical student at the University of Michigan, began his murderous career by stealing corpses and using them for fraudulent insurance claims. He later moved to Chicago, where he built a house specifically designed for murder, complete with secret passages, soundproof rooms, and a kiln for incinerating bodies. Holmes lured young women with promises of marriage, only to rob and kill them. Although he confessed to 27 murders, he is suspected of killing as many as 200 people. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Check out the interview. which is available as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website, or most major podcast platforms. Miyuki Ishikawa: The Japanese Midwife of Death In Japan, Miyuki Ishikawa, a midwife, was responsible for the deaths of over 100 newborn babies during the 1940s. Ishikawa, often working with accomplices, convinced poor parents to give up their children, claiming it would be less costly than raising them. She then neglected and killed the infants, with the authorities showing little interest in the crimes. Despite the staggering death toll, Ishikawa served only four years in prison. Dr. Josef Mengele: The Angel of Death Perhaps the most infamous medical professional in history is Dr. Josef Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death." Mengele, a Nazi officer and physician at Auschwitz, conducted horrifying experiments on prisoners, killing and torturing countless victims under the guise of medical research. His crimes are almost beyond comprehension, making him one of history's most evil and corrupt physicians. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, MeWe and other social media platforms.  The Dark Side of Healthcare: Medical Serial Killers The methods of serial killers vary, but those in the healthcare profession often use their knowledge to kill without suspicion. Unlike typical serial killers, who might stalk or abduct their victims, healthcare serial killers operate under the guise of care, making them especially dangerous. Historically referred to as "angels of mercy," these killers are now recognized as "healthcare serial killers," a term that more accurately reflects their crimes. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers.  Bruce Sackman's book, Behind the Murder Curtain: Special Agent Bruce Sackman Hunts Doctors and Nurses Who Kill Our Veterans, offers a detailed account of his investigations into these rare and terrifying killers. The book provides a chilling glimpse into the minds of healthcare professionals who betrayed their oath and turned into serial killers. The interview is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website and most major podcast Platforms. Catching These Rare Serial Killers The investigation and capture of healthcare serial killers required the collaboration of police, federal agents, and specialized teams. These cases are often uncovered through meticulous investigations, sometimes aided by social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, where traces of their activities may be found. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Get the entire interview as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website, or most major podcast platforms. Josh Sackman, cofounder and president of AppliedVR, joins us today to talk about pain management using virtual reality (VR). We discuss the bio-psycho-social dimensions of pain, and how to manage and reduce it accordingly. Some of the evidence-based tools and features discussed include: breath (e.g. box, 4-7-8, Wim Hof, diaphragmatic breathing, etc.), visualization, social connection, mindfulness & meditation, distraction & attention control, movement & interactivity, presence & immersion, sleep, biofeedback, interoception-building practices, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), pain education, grit & resilience, voice, and various other self-regulatory techniques.Although VR has proven benefits for the reduction and management of both acute and chronic pain, the goal of today's episode is to teach you principles, practices, and skills that you can use anywhere and anytime, with or without the headset. We discuss the various benefits of VR, how it compares with opioids and other existing therapies and technologies, common hurdles that VR helps overcome (e.g. accessibility, availability, affordability, complexity, enjoyability), pain's connection and interference with other facets of life (e.g. sleep, social interaction, mood, etc.), and how to find more peace, stability, and calm amidst your pain. **CONNECT & LEARN MORE**Josh's LinkedIn: /joshsackman company (AppliedVR) website: appliedvr.ioproduct (RelieVRx) website: relievrx.comInstagram: @appliedvrLinkedIn: /appliedvrRESOURCESBOOKS - Breath by James NestorCOMPANIES, SCHOOLS, & ORGANIZATIONS - ByteDance- International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)- Stanford University - University of California, Berkeley- University of Washington- USC- Virtual Human Interaction Lab (@Stanford)PEOPLE- Albert "Skip" Rizzo- Andrew Weil- Beth Darnall - Bob Jester- Hunter Hoffman- James Nestor- Jeremy Bailenson- Matt Walker- Sean Mackey- Wim HofPODCASTS - Huberman Lab      -  Dr. Sean Mackey: Tools to Reduce & Manage Pain (1/15/2024)      - 6-part sleep series with Matt Walker (4/3/2024 ~)- The Matt Walker PodcastLearn more at: appliedvr.io

It's a true crime series that is extremally unnerving as both season 1 and 2 tell stories of Dr's who would weave a web of lies, manipulation and utter devastation. Countless patients would have their lives forever changed at the hands of these men, men who they were supposed to be able to trust, with some patients even dying from what was done to them.I wanted to find out more about this world and these Dr's and nurses who go from taking an oath to help people to ultimately destroing lives. It is a learned skill. For the Board Chair/CEO relationship, develop some informal communication habits. Business moves too fast to wait for a meeting. Much has been reported in the news about the issues facing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Articles abound about reform, but few highlight the incredible dedication and work performed by law enforcement to curtail untoward activity ranging from fraud to murder. “Behind the Murder Curtain” follows investigations of Medical Serial Killers conducted by the Special Agents and forensic nurses of the VA Office of Inspector General and their law enforcement partners. Bruce Sackman, former Special Agent-in-Charge, candidly walks the reader through the roadblocks experienced by his team in identifying and proving beyond a reasonable doubt that doctors such as Dr. Michael Swango and nurses like Kristin Gilbert murder their patients instead of upholding the Hippocratic Oath. The doctors and nurses featured in this book pursue careers in medicine for a variety of reasons, including the desire to inflict excruciating pain and suffering or be seen as the savior. The book focuses on Medical Serial Killers who at some point in their careers work for the government, but clearly articulates that the problem is not a unique one. Sackman recounts meeting a Scotland Yard detective who investigated Dr. Harold Shipman, ultimately responsible for killing hundreds of people. Sackman presents the herculean effort and time it took to find and convict Dr. Swango, who left the country for Africa to continue practicing medicine. He spells out the difficult relationships amongst various agencies in working together and offers ways to tackle investigations by addressing the most obvious crime first. Sackman's idea to pursue Dr. Swango on fraud charges enabled him to be detained at the airport before boarding a flight for Saudi Arabia. After years of investigating Medical Serial Killers, Sackman developed The Red Flags Protocol, an A-Z checklist, to help hospitals and law enforcement pay attention to anomalies. It is truly unfathomable that physicians and nurses might use their positions to murder patients, but after reading “Behind the Murder Curtain” it is clear that medical professionals are on the front lines of identifying these killers. “Behind the Murder Curtain” is published by Post Hill Press. https://behindthemurdercurtain.com/

2014 Florida Teacher of the Year ESOL  Orlando, Fl  Segment I – Background and Inspiration   Tell your story. Where are you from and how long have you been teaching? What classes have you taught?    – Dorina is an ESOL teacher as well as the 2014 Florida Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the National Teacher of the Year. She is the daughter of a business teacher and began her career in Massachusetts.      Who has helped you in your journey to become a master teacher?    – Her mother, a business teacher at a Title I school on Long Island, the head of the Applied Linguistics department at the University of Massachusetts, and her assistant principal at Westridge Middle School, Cynthia Haupt.   It is important for other teachers to know that we all have had setbacks in the classroom. Identify an instance in which you struggled as a teacher and explain what you learned from that experience.   – In trying to infuse every culture her students possessed into a lesson, it ended up being a miss-mosh. The assignment was a persuasive essay and in that moment she realized that sometimes less is more. Her students noticed that she was trying too hard. What is the difficult of teaching ESOL? – The biggest challenge is having students from 17 different countries, 11 different languages in one classroom. It is also the cultural differences and differing backgrounds in one room -- one student did not know how to hold a pen.  What is one thing that you love about the classroom?    – The kids. She gets emotional because she has got 160 of them every year. She loves them so much.  Segment II — What book do you recommend to a teacher that wants to develop?                                                  What is one thing a teacher can do outside the classroom that can pay off inside the classroom? -- Most of Dorina's classroom exists outside the classroom.  Dorina believes that community service should be an essential part of her students' education.  Is there an internet resource that you can recommend which will help teachers grow professionally? teachertube edmodo Smithsonian Education  Teaching Channel (Dorina's lesson) Dave's ESL Cafe  Elite Daily Provide a writing practice that is effective?  – Formulaic writing. It provides structure for students that need it. is a process, not a product. ne minute of conferencing is worth 15 minutes of comments on the paper.  Update the cannon. What book, written in the last 10-15 years, belongs in the classroom? -- Dorina allows her students to read books from their native countries.   The post #28: ESL on Fire with Dorina Sackman — 2014 Florida Teacher of the Year appeared first on Talks with Teachers.

It's 8:45 at Tom, Dick, and Harry's. The coffee's hot, the door's unlocked, and that corner table - the one by the jukebox(1), is gathering a familiar crowd. They're retired farmers, contractors, businessmen, a few old law enforcement guys(2), a former postmaster(3) and more. There are about 17 in all, with ages ranging(4) from the early 70's to 90. They meet daily, but show up(5) in greatest numbers on Fridays, when they take turns(6) bringing doughnuts. They've been around the block once or twice(7), and they love talking about it. In fact, they love talking in general, about everything from football, to politics, to how best to plant tomato seeds. "Sometimes there are three or four stories going on at once and you can't hear anything," says Kenny. "Put it this way," adds Bill, "when I started coming here I didn't have hearing aids(8). Now I do." Another of them adds, "We enjoy each other's company. We don't always agree, but we don't get too annoyed at each other." There is a real diversity of opinions and life experiences in this group. "We have a vast table of knowledge," says Sackman, a retired state trooper. His comment provokes snickering(9) and eye rolling from his friends. The first members of this group started getting together 35 years ago. When asked if wisdom does really come with age, half of the members say "yes", and the other half, at the same time say "no". And then there's more laughter. 1. 'Jukebox' is a typically American word which describes something that is very important in American culture. It is a machine which plays different pieces of music when money is put in it. a. This jukebox takes quarters. You need to put a quarter in it before you can choose a song. b. The diner is very retro; it has 60's style decoration and even a jukebox. 2. 'Law enforcement'/ 'a law enforcement officer' basically means a policeman. a. He's taking his law enforcement class in order to become a policeman. 3. 'Postmaster' is the same as a postman or a mail man. 4. 'With ...ranging from ....to ....' when comparing ages, weights, sizes, colors, or other characteristics. a. The shop has antiques with prices ranging from $50 to $3000. b. The concert has performers from countries ranging from India to South America. 5. 'To show up' means the same as 'to turn up' which means to arrive, appear, or be present. Both imply that the opposite would be possible. a. I'm glad that you finally showed up! b. They didn't show up until the party was over. 6. 'To take turns' is fairly self explanatory. In a game or arranged activity of some sort, one person will have a turn, then another, and so forth. a. When we play cards, we have to take turns. b. If you don't take turns, it's not fair for everybody else. 7. 'To go around the block' or 'to have been around the block' means to have lived a long life. 'A block' refers to a block of houses, or a square formation of homes around 4 streets. a. He speaks from experience; he's been around the block a few times. b. He's too young, he hasn't been around the block yet. 8. 'A hearing aid' is a small device that you put in your ear to help you hear. a. My hearing test showed that I need a hearing aid. b. His hearing aid is so small that you can hardly see it. 9. 'To snicker' is a way of laughing. There are many verbs for different types of laughter, 'to chuckle', 'to chortle', 'to snigger', 'to giggle'. The most common ones are 'to giggle' and 'to chuckle'. 'To snicker' is more American, and implies that you're laughing at someone or disagreeing with what has been said.  a. The children giggled while they mixed the mud with water, and wiped it on the dog. b. He snickered at my comment. I knew that he disagreed with me. Thanks for listening!
