Another captivating episode! This month Mary had the chance to be in conversation with Dr. Peter Whitehouse. With MD and PhD degrees from Johns Hopkins, Peter has filled roles as Professor of Cognitive Science, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Psychology, Nursing, Organizational Behavior, Bioethics and History. He's also deeply involved with public education as President of Intergenerational Schools International, and can be found portraying "The Tree Doctor," a metaphorical tree being who shares what trees and forests have to teach humans about being healthy. In 1986, after filling positions at Harvard and Boston University, Peter established the department of Neurology at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH, where he continues on faculty. He is coauthor of The Myth of Alzheimer's: What You Aren't Being Told about Today's Most Dreaded Diagnosis and hundreds of academic papers and book chapters. He is also part of the reimagine aging movement personally and culturally. In 2000, Peter and his wife, Catherine Whitehouse, a developmental psychologist, began opening what are now 3 public schools in Cleveland focused on connecting seniors with school-age children. From the beginning, a key focus of the curricula in these schools has been the wellbeing of the climate. From dignity across the lifespan to ecological interdependence and quantum entanglement, Mary and Peter had plenty to talk about. You can learn more about Dr. Peter Whitehouse by checking out any of his many publications. In particular, The Myth of Alzehimer's. Broadcasting LIVE from the sidewalk outside Applegate Chevrolet, in Flint, MI, the fellas attended the Back to the Bricks, watched some cool cars … for about 15 minutes! Then, they watched the rain drops through the windows of Applegate Chevrolet. And, there was a very special guest on the show, in person, none other than Gibby Repphun, on for his 4th appearance on the show! We chomped on some Missy and Mel's Chips & Salsa and also sampled the Pickle Pizza from Enzo's in Grand Blanc (and a new location in Davison)! We had a lot of great laughs and it was a lot of fun. Thank you to Susan Applegate, Daniel George, and Amber Taylor for making this episode a reality! ASGP is POWERed by MediaSkapes! Love, CT & Rich … and Phil!!!

Der 1. FC Magdeburg marschiert weiter in Richtung zweite Bundesliga. Im Podcast sprechen die FCM-Experten über die wichtigsten Personalien der kommenden Monate.
In prior podcasts we talked about racism and COVID, lack of diversity in the palliative care workforce, racial and ethnic differences in end of life care, and implicit bias in geriatrics and palliative care. Today our focus is on structural, institutional, and interpersonal racism, and how these different but related constructs negatively impact the care of older adults and people with serious illness. We are joined by Deborah Ejem, a medical sociologist and Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Alabama Birmingham, and Deep Ashana, a pulmonary critical care physician and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University. We discuss: What are the differences between structural, institutional, and interpersonal racism? Examples of how these forms of racism operate in the care of seriously ill patients, including from one of our guest's personal experiences. The importance of attention to religion and spirituality Clinician reluctance to engage in advance care planning with minoritized patients as a driver of disparities How abandoning support for advance care planning might foreground implicit biases inherent in the heuristics (or nudges, or short cuts in thinking) inherent to time-pressed in-the-moment decision making. Lack of diversity in the participants represented in AAHPM State of the Science presentations, as well as lack of focus on disparities (no link - see upcoming presentation by Deboarh Ejem at the virtual conference). Co-opting of disparities issues by the Alzheimer's Association in their argument for CMS/Medicare coverage of aducanumab (see this Twitter thread by Jonathan Jackson here and article by Daniel George here). Action Item: Please submit a comment to CMS about aducanumab coverage today. Feel free to express your outrage at the lack of diversity in the trials. We could have continued talking with our guests for hours. We will continue to address the issue of racism in future podcasts. -@AlexSmithMD

Medical anthropologist and professor of humanities and public health sciences Daniel George, PhD, and professor of neurology and medicine Peter Whitehouse, MD, PhD, join the podcast to discuss their recent book, American Dementia: Brain Health in an Unhealthy Society. In it, they argue that 20th century policies focused on reducing inequality, increasing access to education and healthcare, and protecting the environment contributed to today's declining dementia rates, but inequalities in the 21st century are reversing these trends. Discussing the pros and cons of current social and clinical approaches to Alzheimer's disease, our guests challenge assumptions about dementia caregiving and show how we can work together to create a healthier society. Guests: Daniel George, PhD, medical anthropologist, associate professor of humanities and public health sciences, Penn State College of Medicine, and Peter Whitehouse, MD, PhD, professor of neurology, Case Western University, professor of medicine, University of Toronto Episode Topics 3:04 Why use the title American Dementia? What does that mean for you? 8:54 What do you think is wrong with our current societal, cultural and clinical approaches to Alzheimer's disease? 16:10 What are the inequalities we're facing in the 21st century compared to the 20th century? How are they affecting brain health? 19:04 How does climate change affect our cognition and brain health? 25:33 What would you want your reader to do next after finishing the book? Show Notes Read about American Dementia: Brain Health in an Unhealthy Society on Goodreads. Paul Krauss MA LPC speaks with Peter Whitehouse, MD-PhD and Daniel George, PhD MSc about their new book "American Dementia: Brain Health in an Unhealthy Society." This is a conversation you are not going to want to miss. Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. George are two experts coming together to make a well-researched and passionate argument about rethinking brain health and the current healthcare system through an "eco-psychosocial lens." From examining Alzheimer's as NOT a single disease (such as Polio) but a complex, heterogenous condition based on multiple studies, to examining the pharmaceutical industry's role in shaping the narrative about the syndrome--Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. George flex their substantial knowledge base in critically examining the American view on Dementia from multiple medical, scientific, and social lenses. Further, Dr. Whitehouse and Dr. George discuss how the misunderstanding of Alzheimer's has mostly locked in efforts to treat it to a single pill, instead of reflecting on the research into the strides made in the healthcare industry with Person Centered Care, Life-Long education, Age-Friendly Communities, and basic preventative measures that communities may implement as ways to prevent and help those suffering from Alzheimer's. The conversation runs from the micro (the disease and what the research has demonstrated) to the macro (the broader implications of our current society and how it functions). Previously, the two contributed to the book: The Myth of Alzheimer's: What You Aren't Being Told About Today's Most Dreaded Diagnosis. Buy their new book here.
