At least 10 area men exonerated by president In one of his first acts in office, President Donald Trump on Monday (Jan. 20) pardoned more than 1,500 men and women charged with participating in the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, during the certification of Joe Biden's election win. Those receiving "full, complete and unconditional pardons" include at least five local men convicted of felonies. Trump, declaring Monday to be "liberation day," also commuted the sentences of 14 people associated with the Proud Boys or Oath Keepers and convicted of seditious conspiracy for mounting an organized, military-like assault. Because they did not receive pardons, they will continue to face restrictions such as a ban on voting and owning firearms. More than 700 of the 1,100 people convicted received no prison time or have completed their sentences. But as of this week, about 400 others were incarcerated. At least 387 rioters were convicted of assaulting police officers or journalists, according to a tally by The Washington Post. Rep. Mike Lawler, a Republican whose district includes Philipstown, two weeks ago said on MSNBC he didn't think anyone who committed violence on Jan. 6 should be pardoned. In a statement on Tuesday (Jan. 21), a spokesman said Lawler's stance hasn't changed but that, "as President Biden proved by preemptively pardoning his entire family, the president has absolute pardon authority." Rep. Pat Ryan, a Democrat whose district includes Beacon, said in a statement that Trump had "pardoned insurrectionists convicted of violently assaulting police officers. That doesn't make life more safe for Hudson Valley families." William Pepe, Beacon On Tuesday, federal prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss the indictment against Pepe because of Trump's order. Pepe, who now lives in White Plains, was found guilty in a bench trial on Oct. 23 of a felony (obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder) and four misdemeanors. He was identified by prosecutors as president of the Hudson Valley chapter of the Proud Boys and accused of coordinating with other Proud Boys by radio and moving a police barricade. Pepe was arrested six days after the riot and fired from his job at Metro-North in Brewster. He had been free until sentencing, which was scheduled for March 11. Gregory Purdy Jr., Hopewell Junction Matthew Purdy, Hopewell Junction Robert Turner, Poughkeepsie A federal judge on Tuesday dismissed indictments against Purdy Jr., a 2016 Carmel High School graduate, and Turner, his uncle. Purdy Jr. was convicted by a jury in June of six felonies. Turner, 42, formerly of Poughkeepsie, was convicted of three felonies. Both were found guilty of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers. Gregory Purdy's younger brother, Matthew, was convicted of two misdemeanors. The government had asked that Purdy Jr. be sentenced to five years. On Dec. 6, Matthew Purdy was sentenced to 90 days and sent to a detention center in Philadelphia. The Purdy brothers are sons of Gregory Schwartz-Purdy, a Republican from Kent who in 2016 challenged then-Assembly Member Sandy Galef, a Democrat whose district included Philipstown, for her seat. According to a LinkedIn profile, Purdy Jr. managed his father's campaign. "To all the haters out there, President Trump kept his word," Gregory Purdy said in a phone call on Monday to supporters waiting outside the Washington, D.C., jail where he was being held, according to The Washington Post. In a court filing after Purdy Jr. was arrested in November 2021, the FBI cited videos he posted on social media and footage retrieved from body cameras worn by two Metropolitan Police Department officers confronted outside the Capitol at 2 p.m. by Purdy Jr. and Purdy-Schwartz, about 20 minutes before the House and Senate chambers were evacuated. According to the FBI, Purdy Jr. told the officers, "You gotta let us by," and his father said, "You're going to make a decision." Purdy Jr. later posted to Instagram, according to ...

Elections board tosses problem signatures A Cortlandt Manor woman who hoped to force a primary vote against Assembly Member Dana Levenberg, a Democrat whose district includes Philipstown, fell short this week after the state Board of Elections threw out many of the signatures on her nominating petition. Sandy Galef, who held the seat in the Assembly for 30 years before retiring in 2022, and former Westchester County lawmaker Catherine Borgia filed a challenge with the state Board of Elections on April 5 to petitions submitted by Amanda Victoria Mintz, who had hoped to challenge the incumbent on June 25 for the Democratic ballot line. Levenberg is seeking a second, 2-year term. Galef and Borgia objected to 515 of the 655 signatures submitted by Victoria Mintz, who needed 500 to force a primary. Last week, joined by Levenberg, they filed a lawsuit in Westchester County Supreme Court, saying they wanted to preserve the right to challenge the petitions if the Board of Elections ruled in Victoria Mintz's favor. Attorney Robert Spolzino told Judge Charles Wood that the Board of Elections had scuttled the petitions by invalidating 150 signatories because they are not registered to vote or not enrolled as Democrats, and 23 because they live outside the 95th District. The board found another 49 signatures invalid because of changes that had not been initialed by the signatories and one case in which a voter witnessed their own signature, Spolzino told Wood in a letter on Tuesday (April 23). Spolzino said that statements this week by Victoria Mintz's attorney indicated she will not "oppose the relief requested in this proceeding." By Thursday (April 25), Victoria Mintz's campaign website identified her as a "former official Democratic Party candidate." On Monday, in letter to the court, Victoria Mintz said the BOE "recommended" at a hearing on Friday (April 26) that the petitions be invalidated at meeting this week, and that she was "conceding in advance." "I had assured my signees that their voices would be represented when they nobly signed to put me forth as their chosen representative and am embarrassed to report to them that they were invalidated because of this," Victoria Mintz wrote. On her website, Victoria Mintz says she is a "social entrepreneur" who co-founded a canned-beverage company called Siponey Spritz. She filed to run on March 27. A 2003 Carmel High School graduate, Victoria Mintz said she is "Latina, I have a Jewish family, and am disabled (bilaterally hearing-impaired), which is largely my motivation to represent the diverse voices and needs of our growing local population." She does not detail why she challenged Levenberg but, in an April 18 news release called the lawsuit a "disgraceful use of taxpayer dollars, donations and endorsements. We deserve a fair race." Levenberg is a former chief of staff for Galef. In 2022, she defeated Republican Stacy Halper in the general election with 59 percent of the vote. In the lawsuit, Levenberg, Galef and Borgia raised the same issues identified by the Board of Elections, as well as claiming some dates and signatures appeared to be altered, some people signed the petitions more than once and some addresses were "missing, incomplete or erroneous." Victoria Mintz, through an attorney, claimed that the state's requirement that petition signers include their town along with their municipality was unconstitutional under a federal ruling concerning the presidential campaign in 2000. The validity of signatures on nominating petitions can be serious business. A member of the Peekskill Common Council was accused this month of falsifying documents after the Westchester County Board of Elections threw out 217 of the 531 signatures he submitted on his nominating petition for a county Legislature seat. District Attorney Miriam Rocah told the Peekskill Herald that Rob Scott was charged with a felony count for allegedly filing petitions with forged signatures for the June 2023 Democratic ...

It might not be surprising that the History Channel is planning to air an eight-hour docu-series on the life of President John F. Kennedy next month to mark the 60th anniversary of his assassination. You might be very surprised to learn that the filmmaker who researched, shot, wrote, edited and scored much of the documentary is 23 years old, having been born a year before 9/11. Ashton Gleckman grew up in Carmel and attended local schools, although his ambition to work in the film industry was so great that he left Carmel High School after his sophomore year to work for a collective of film and TV composers. He decided to become a documentarian after a short stint working in Los Angeles, and by the age of 19 had created the award-winning documentary “We Shall Not Die Now” about survivors of the Holocaust. In this week's edition of the podcast, Gleckman discusses what he found so resonant about Kennedy that he embarked on the three-year project by doing his own fundraising and without any guarantee that the finished product would win national distribution. (Along the way, he picked up a producing partner in the Academy Award-winning firm Radical Media.) Gleckman also lays out milestones in his lightning-fast and unusual rise as a filmmaker, as well as the reasons he thought the world—and in particular post-Kennedy generations--needed a deep dive into the life and legacy of the 35th president. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

Should we be shocked that the Church and followers of Christ are misunderstood and under attack? St. Peter, and even Jesus himself, tell us that this is part of what it means to be Christian. As we approach Holy Week and the Passion, Father Curtis Hecker, chaplain at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita, helps prepare us for this great battle. In order to help the Church, we don't need power or influence. Instead, we must be able to see our target clearly and continue to do the small things well- and with joy. If we do that, we'll be able to keep the darkness at bay.
It is the general understanding of people that religion deals with the moral and spiritual aspects of life, and economics with the material aspect. If the role of economics is to accomplish a good life and religion, on the other hand, show us how to live a good life, then religion and economics should work together as partners. This presentation will maintain the view that a partnership between material and spiritual aspects of life are potent forces to solve economic problems and improve well-being and prosperity. Hooshmand Badee is an academic economist with a Doctoral degree in Bahá'í economics. His Doctoral research title is "The Bahá'í teachings on economics and their implications for the Bahá'í community and the wider society." Hooshmand's two recent books are Economics and the Bahá'í Faith; and Principles of Spiritual Economics – A Compilation from the Baha'i writings with an overview of Baha'i economics. Hooshmand has worked as a lecturer of economics for more than 25 years in several universities, mainly in the West Indies and the UK. He was one of the founders of Carmel High School, a Bahá'í inspired school in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. He is currently a faculty member at the Wilmette Institute in US and an academic member of the Baha'i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE) in Iran.
