As Father's Day approaches, it's a good time to reflect on our own fathers or father figures in our lives and let them know how much we appreciate them. As Blythe Daniel and her son, William, remind us in this week's conversation, fathers often go unappreciated. But their new book, "I Love You, Dad: Words to Honor and Humor You," is aimed at letting fathers know how much they're loved while pointing readers to our Heavenly father. Written along with Helen McIntosh, Blythe's mother, this book is somewhat of a companion book to one that Blythe and Helen wrote in 2022 called, "I Love You, Mom: Cherished Word Gifts from My Heart to Yours." This was such a fun episode because Blythe is my literary agent and this was William's second time on the podcast after he was on in 2023 talking about his book, "You're Joking Me," a joke book for kids. I was also honored to be asked to write an endorsement for this book! In this conversation, we reflect on the role of a father, how children can honor God while honoring their parents, and ways to show appreciation this Father's Day season. Mothers, Daughters & the Empty Nest   What We Need From Each Other & What We Need to Offer   With Dr. Helen McIntosh and Charlotte's Daughters, Kate and Cambri As empty nesting moms, we find ourselves in unique spaces and places. Many of us are doing life with our own parents and our adult daughters. Some of us have more time on our hands and some have less. As we pour out and love our families, we also must manage our own expectations and emotions. Listen in as Helen and Charlotte talk about: How healthy is our nest? And our relationships?   How can we moms offer more than we expect to receive?   How do we not set ourselves up for disappointment?   How can we release our expectations, yet share our hopes?   What do our girls need from us?   Leaning in and looking to Jesus to lead our days is the answer to most of life's issue. Yet sometimes it is hard to surrender and let Him do so. How can we better do this? Seeing our daughters with the eyes of Christ certainly helps us understand their lives and needs. Charlotte likes to ask her girls, “How can I best love and support you these days? How can I be praying for you?   What else can we do as moms to love our adult daughters as we empty nest?   Thanks for joining us in this meaningful conversation,   To reach Helen: Our Mended Hearts with Blythe Daniel & Dr. Helen McIntosh   To reach Charlotte: https://charlotteguest.com

Today Elaine chats with dancer, performer, choreographer Charlotte McLean about her career, the power of dance and the everything that surrounds menstrual health and the womb and Charlotte's new work Futuristic Folktales. Which was co-created by an exciting multi-disciplinary creative team including Helen McIntosh, Nelly Kelly, Malin Lewis, Astro Scheidegger, Orrow Bell, Alison Brown, Emma Jones, and Rob Evans, Futuristic Folktales is a collaboration-driven show that aims to disrupt, and refresh expected formats of performance through radical and emotive explorations of reproductive justice and injustice, body politics, bodily autonomy, and identity. Futuristic Folktales Futuristic Folktales tells the momentous story of the first womb - an environment where life and death intimately coexist. Humbly attempting to unify humanity through the infinite narrative of birth, the show experiments with contemporary, breaking, and Scottish Highland dance to probe questions of tradition, preservation, myth, and identity. The performers share their unique perspectives, as Orrow and Astro intimately birth and unbirth each other. Inviting audiences to feel resistance as the performance imitates the hostile, terse environment of the womb, the show seeks to further dance as a form of political protest - otherwise, why dance? Charlotte Mclean's work amalgamates dance theatre, improvisation, voice work, imagination, self-celebration, radical listening and joy. Charlotte is a contemporary dance artist from Arbroath, Scotland and a London Contemporary Dance School graduate. She has performed and worked internationally with Curious Seed, Eva Recacha, Pink Mama Theatre, Hannes Langolf, Jack Webb, Vanessa Cook and Barrowland Ballet amongst many others. Charlotte is co-founder of BADBODYCHAOSCODE (fka The Yonis) with Haley Jayne Gash and founder of sibling company Die Berner Band. Both are contemporary movement bands. They have been commissioned to perform at Edinburgh and Camden Fringe Festivals, Brainchild Festival, V&A London, The Place, TANZhAUS Bern and Dampfzentrale and have been featured in Dazed and Confused Magazine. The bands have toured in the UK, Poland, France, Germany, Switzerland and New York City. Charlotte began her dancing career with Highland, a traditional Scottish form of movement and taught this from a young age. She has always been passionate about teaching and sharing. She has taught at London Contemporary Dance School; Scottish Dance Theatre; Dance Base Edinburgh, TanzBüro Basel and now teaches at Barbara Bortoli Ballet School. How Jesus not only forgave the man, but also healed him – and what that says about Jesus's true identity. What it was like for Blythe and her mom to write a book together. How her mother, Helen, broke the cycle of destructive parenting and what that taught Blythe as she parents her own children. How Blythe seeks to build bridges and not walls with her children.   The exact verses read in this podcast are Matthew 15:21-28 in the NIV.   You can find Blythe and Helen at  https://ourmendedhearts.com/ You can follow Blythe on Instagram: @blythe.daniel And on Facebook: @blythe.daniel The exact verses read in this podcast are: Mark 2:1-12, NIV A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk'? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

This week on Real Talk with Rachael, I'm talking to mother and daughter Dr. Helen McIntosh and Blythe Daniel, authors of Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters. Blythe Daniel is an author, literary agent, and marketer with 25 years of experience in media and publishing. She has written for Focus on the Family, Proverbs 31 Ministries, and Christian Retailing. She conducts blog, podcast, and publicity campaigns and helps authors publish their books. She lives in Colorado with her husband and children. Dr. Helen McIntosh (EdD, Counseling Psychology) is a counselor, speaker, educator, and author. Her work has appeared in several national outlets including Guideposts, ParentLife, and HomeLife magazines. She resides in Dalton, Georgia with her husband Jim. They have two children, including Blythe McIntosh Daniel, and are grandparents five times over. Key Points from Our Conversation: Moms often do the hard work without getting a thank you. Speaking encouraging words over a mom does something inside her heart and inside our hearts. If we want appreciation from our kids, we need to start by encouraging them. Being the initiator allows our kids to say kind things back to us.  When we're in a hard relationship we tend to blame the other person, but Matthew 7 reminds us to focus on the issues in our own hearts. If you have a broken relationship with your mother, remember that words bring life and death. Commit yourself to only speaking words of life. Instead of telling our children what they should be doing, we can ask them if this is an area they'd like us to speak into. Honor and be humble before the other person. Even if we get it wrong, we can ask for forgiveness. When we overhelp, it implies we think our child cannot do something well. God designed us in a way that the relationship between child and mother is foundational. You can honor a mother who didn't necessarily earn it by separating the mess from the relationship and being a blessing builder. Don't get so overwhelmed by your yeses that you can't be focused and intentional during the season while the kids are in your house. God will meet the desires of our hearts when we sacrifice for our kids. You don't have to be perfect. You're not alone in feeling underappreciated or overwhelmed. You're making a difference and you're doing well. If you feel discouraged, take it to the Lord. He'll show you what the deeper issue is. I'm welcoming Blythe Daniel to the podcast this week! Blythe  is a literary agent and marketer. She has written for Proverbs 31 Ministries, Focus on the Family, Ann Voskamp, and Christian Retailing. Her agency markets books represents books to publishers. The daughter of Dr. Helen McIntosh, she lives in Colorado with her husband and three children. She and McIntosh have written I Love You, Mom! and Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters. In honor of Mother's Day we are chatting about her latest book co-written with her mom, Dr. Helen McIntosh. Written for moms of all ages of children, from infants to adults, I Love You, Mom! gives a voice to the feelings many have about their mom. Going beyond a traditional greeting card, the book is beautifully designed with cheerful full-color artwork in a hardcover package. It contains 25 word gifts, each focused on a character quality for mom and designed to express affirmation and encouragement that moms dream of hearing. Each devotion includes a Scripture verse, a story from Daniel and McIntosh about the related word gift or a biblical story, and a pre-written reflection from the perspective of the child to his or her mom using the word gift such as “You are forgiven/fearless/a servant”. Devotions include topics such as leaving a legacy, making time for yourself, choosing joy, connection, serving one another, and more. “Being a mom can sometimes be a tiring, thankless job,” says McIntosh. “But when we take a step back and realize the impact we are making on our child's life, and the critical role we play, it's humbling.” Grab your copy today in time for Mother's Day this week! PARENTING SERIES PART FOUR   When we grow into adulthood, our relationships with our parents naturally shift. For some, our parents are still close. We view them as confidants, and guides or perhaps even friends of a sort. For others of us, those relationships can become strained or even broken entirely. No matter the situation, these relationships always take work. Our relationships with our parents will never be as healthy as they could be unless we invest in them and fight to make them better. Blythe Daniel and Dr. Helen McIntosh are modeling this. When Blythe approached her mother, Helen, about writing a book about healthy mother/daughter relationships, it was clear that they had the opportunity to help a lot of people. To continue our Parenting Series, Blythe and Helen sit down with Davey to share some of their story and the wisdom they've learned about repairing and maintaining healthy relationships with our parents.

Episode Summary: This is a special episode because it marks our 2-yr anniversary of weekly podcast episodes to offer you a Biblically-based hope-filled perspective. For this episode, I’d like to highlight some of the favorite episodes from the past year or so. It seems like I’ve spent the bulk of my career teaching about the importance of our thoughts and our words, so it’s not really much of a surprise that many of the episodes we’ve aired touch on the importance of our thought life. We’ve talked about how to transform our thoughts and transform our life. We’ve talked about how to overcome grumbling, complaining, and negativity. We’ve talked about the importance of our words in our relationships and how to intentionally use our words to improve relationships. We’ve shared how our thoughts often lead us down the spiral into comparison, and how to stop comparing ourselves to others. We also had a several-week series on how to overcome worry, fear, and anxiety, and we also talked about replacing the lies we’ve believed with the truth of God’s word, and so much more. Quotables from the episode: In episode 43, we talked with Sarah Geringer about How to Change Your Thoughts to Transform Your Life [click here to listen to her entire episode - How To Change Your Thoughts and Transform Your Life – Episode 43]. Sarah struggled with her thoughts for a long time before realizing she could do something about them. She shares a bit about her healing journey. Sarah had so much more to say on the topic of How to Change Your Thoughts to Transform Your Life that I hope you’ll go back and listen to ep. 43, and read her guest blog post [click here to read 3 Easy Ways to Meditate on God’s Word]. In one of my favorite episodes, ep. 64, we talked with Tricia Goyer about the journey she and her family, including her ten children, embarked upon to Overcome Grumbling, Complaining, and Negativity [click here to listen to her entire episode - How to Overcome Grumbling, Complaining, and General Negativity – Episode 64]. She shared from her experiences in an effort to guide us on our own journey to overcome negativity in our own lives: Who doesn’t want to let go of Grumbling, Complaining, and Negativity? I know I want to keep my thoughts and words positive and filled with gratitude. If you want to learn more about how to do this, go back and listen to episode 64 [click here to listen to her entire episode How to Overcome Grumbling, Complaining, and General Negativity – Episode 64] and read her guest blog post [click here to read Nothing to Grumble About]. Paying attention to our words and thoughts is not only important for our own lives, but it’s also important because our thoughts and words have an impact on those around us. Scripture says that our words can bring life or death, blessing or cursing. In episode 55, I chatted with Blythe Daniel and her mother, Helen McIntosh, about How to Improve our Mother/Daughter Relationships [click here to listen to her entire episode How To Improve Mother Daughter Relationships – Episode 55], and not too surprisingly, they shared the importance of our thoughts and words on our relationships with those around us. While we can’t control the actions and responses of others, we can control what we think and what we say. If you want a better relationship with those you care about, I hope you’ll go back and listen to episode 55 [click here to listen to her entire episode How To Improve Mother Daughter Relationships – Episode 55] and read their guest blog post [click here to read The Package of Words: A Gift for Mom] and take to heart the suggestions that Blythe and Helen offered. In episode 77, one of my favorite guests, Heather Creekmore returns to help us understand How to Stop Comparing Ourselves to Others [click here to listen to her entire episode How To Stop Comparing Yourself to Others – Episode 77]. She offers a very real, raw, and at times humorous testimony to the struggle she’s had with comparing herself to others. In this episode, we discuss how we so often seem to live under a “burden of better”…our desire to be a better spouse, a better parent, a better employee, a better friend, and even a better Christian. The advice she offers to help stop comparing ourselves to others, and to relinquish the burden of better might surprise you.” I don’t know about you, but the tendency to compare myself to others keeps trying to rear its ugly head. It only takes a minute on social media or watching those in the pew in front of us in church on Sunday morning to know we don’t measure up. I loved what Heather shared about how we can effectively deal with that. If you ever struggle with the tendency to compare yourself with others, or the burden to be better, I hope you’ll go back and listen to episode 77 in full [click here to listen to her entire episode How To Stop Comparing Yourself to Others – Episode 77] and take the time to read her guest blog post [click here to read Releasing the Ideal Me]. In the past year, we probably did more episodes on worry, fear, and anxiety than any other topic. In the past year I’ve noticed so many more people struggling with worry, fear, and anxiety than ever before. In episode 58, we shared How to Practically Fight Anxious Thoughts and Win [click here to listen to her entire episode How to Practically Fight Anxious Thoughts and Win – Episode 58]. God never meant for us to live enshrouded in a cloud of anxiety or worry. In fact, He offered us His peace. In this episode, we tackle how to exchange our worry, fear, and anxiety with God’s peace. Episode 58 was just one of several episodes where we dived deep into overcoming worry, fear, and anxiety. If this is something you struggle with, or you know someone who does, I hope you’ll take the time to go back and listen to the entire episode [click here to listen to her entire episode How to Practically Fight Anxious Thoughts and Win – Episode 58], read the associated blog post [click here to read What Can I Do When I Worry or Become Anxious About the Future?], and maybe even the other episodes about where worry, fear, and anxiety come from and what we can do about them. The last snippet I want to highlight today is from episode 100. I loved that episode—not just because it was a milestone 100th episode, and not just because it aired on my birthday week, but because I spend the better part of my career teaching others to recognize The Lies We Believe versus the Truth of God’s Word [click here to listen to her entire episode Lies We Believe vs. Truths From The Bible About Our Identity – Episode 100]. This has not always been easy for me, and it’s something I still have to put into practice, but when we can do this, so many other things in our life fall into place. In episode 100, we gave many more examples than we could show in that short snippet. I would encourage you to go back and listen to the episode in its entirety [click here to listen to her entire episode Lies We Believe vs. Truths From The Bible About Our Identity – Episode 100], read the associated blog post [click here to read Finding Your Identity in Christ: 20 Truths from God’s Word], see which lies you resonate with, and then hear what God’s truth is in response. I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s anniversary episode. There were so many good episodes that I had a hard time narrowing it down to just a few. I’d love to hear what your favorite episodes have been, as well as who you think could offer a Biblically-based HFP that you’d like to hear on the podcast! If something in this episode resonated with you, or you think it’d be an encouragement to others, would you consider sharing it with others who may need a jolt of hope today? Each week we offer you multiple free resources in the form of podcasts episodes, blog posts, social media posts, and memes. Book a Dream Consultation with Merritt  What's your relationship like with your mom? Literary agent and author Blythe Daniel and her mom wrote a book together to support restoration and healing in mother/daughter relationships. Theirs is one of the many resources Blythe has shepherded onto bookshelves around the world in fulfilling her mission as a literary evangelist. Part of pursuing this dream for Blythe has been remembering God's faithfulness and His limitless nature; her story reminds us that this is true for His role in our dreams as well. Here's what stood out to me from this conversation:  Blythe talks about being a missionary to places that she will probably never personally visit—an encouragement that you CAN be on mission right where you are right now. The tension of not allowing your big dreams to become more important than the people God has put right in front of you. Believing in God's limitlessness as it relates to our dreams instead of the limits we manufacture, which often keep us stuck or stalled out. Loved this interview?
