Donald Tarlton was one of the most important figures in not only the history of popular music here in Montreal, but in Canada. He founded the concert promotion and booking company Donald K. Donald (or DKD) in 1966, and was instrumental in bringing to Montreal bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and the Who. He also helped create the Aquarius record label featuring artists like April Wine, Corey Hart and Sum 41. In the year 2000, he was selected as a Member of the Order of Canada. Here he is in conversation with CHOM deejay Live Earl Jive in 1974 talking about a new Canadian band who were coming to Montreal for the first time, named not Mahogany Rush, but "Rush." Sword is a Canadian heavy metal band from Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, that was formed in 1981 and is still active to this day. To date, they have released three studio albums, one compilation and one live albumIn 1981, Rick (vocals) and Dan Hughes (drums) formed the band and they were joined by guitarist Mike Plant and bassist Mike Larocque in the first lineup of the band. They signed their first recording contract in 1984 with Aquarius Records and released two albums for the label in the late 1980s; the debut album Metalized in 1986 and its follow-up Sweet Dreams in 1988.They toured in the support slots for Motörhead and Alice Cooper, and the group also opened for Metallica on their Master of Puppets tour in 1986.Rick Hughes also went on to form Saints & Sinners and released a self-titled album with them in 1992, which is still revered by many hard rock fans worldwide.Throughout their career, Sword sold in excess of 180,000 albums and the band has been more active since 2011 when they reunited for a show and they have since played various festivals in Canada and Germany. In 2016, they released Live Hammersmith, recorded while they were on tour supporting Motörhead in 1987.Sword's third studio album (their first in 34 years!) titled III was released on November 25, 2022. Harvey Brownstone Interviews Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society” Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Michael Dane, has written a multiple award-winning and critically acclaimed memoir entitled, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society”.  Our guest started out with a prestigious scholarship at the Julliard School of American Ballet in New York, then moved to the American Ballet Theatre, and was then recruited to the Iranian National Ballet in 1976.  But when it became frightfully clear that the Shah of Iran was about to be overthrown, our guest fled the country in a harrowing escape over the Turkish mountains.    He then danced with the world famous “Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo”, performing in the most glamorous venues.   He then reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter, moved to Paris, signed a recording contract with Aquarius Records, and recorded 3 albums.  As a provocative and innovative performer in Europe and New York, he became something of a sensation, headlining at the most avant garde clubs including “Studio 54”, “The Grapevine” and “The Anvil”.   He then became an actor, appearing in movies like “Spike of Bensonhurst”, “A Certain Sacrifice”, “Hangmen” and “It Could Happen to You”, and on TV shows including “All My Children” and “Saturday Night Live”.  And the things he's had to do to make a living when he was BETWEEN jobs?  Well, you'll have to read the book to learn about that.  What makes his book so special, is his ability to articulate, in the most exquisite way, the stark reality of life for most gay men, especially from my generation – the journey of growing up in isolation, and in ghettos created by stereotypes, forcing us to create false personas and identities in a world that insists that we wear a disguise in order to survive.   The book has won numerous awards, including THREE Royal Dragonfly Awards, the Independent Author Network Award, and the IndieReader Discovery Award.  And the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts AND the Stonewall National Museum & Archives have added the book to their research collections.  This is an introspective, insightful, brutally honest and occasionally shocking account of a turbulent, sometimes chaotic – but always fascinating – life lived on the edge.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ http://www.homoamerican.com/ #MichaelDane   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Having closed in 2016 after 47 years, this small apartment-sized store championed local, underground, independent, and challenging music to the masses - most memorably with their infamous bi-weekly, college essay-length, new-release lists.This doc has interviews with the aQ owners dating back to 1970, other record store owners from around the world, musicians, label heads, music journalists, and INTENSE music collectors. Her work ranges in size from a knot that can fit in the palm of a child's hand to room-sized installations that are sought after by private collectors. Following long careers at Apple and as owner of legendary music shop Aquarius Records, she launched her studio in 2015. Select clients include the National Geographic Society, the De Young Museum, Nobu Hotels, Google, and the Kering Group, and her work has been covered by Wired, The New York Times and Martha Stewart. Windy's book about her work was published by Abrams in 2019.Andee Connors is a drummer, musician, artist, DJ, music curator, photographer, former record store owner, former record label owner. He's been playing drums since 9 years old, touring and recording since 19. Punk rock is about energy, attitude, and message. It's been the gateway drug for a lot of guitarists and music lovers. And those forces are what steered East Bay Ray away from his bar-band gig in 1978. “The little hairs on the back of my neck stood up,” Ray remembered during a https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/forgotten-heroes-east-bay-ray (2016 PG interview). “I saw the Weirdos playing. I said, ‘This is what I want to do.' I phased myself out of the bar band and put an ad up in Aquarius Records and Rather Ripped Records. Klaus Flouride (bassist Geoffrey Lyall) and Jello Biafra (singer Eric Boucher) answered the ad.” And with the addition of drummer Ted (Bruce Slesinger), the Dead Kennedys were born. By the time they recorded their 1981 EP In God We Trust, Inc. (on their own independent label, Alternative Tentacles), Ted was gone and D.H. Peligro (Darren Henley) became their stalwart skin slammer. Through the band's initial eight years, four albums, and an EP, their subversive harpoon of jagged political commentary was tipped by Biafra's lyrics. That got the nation's attention, but what inspires musicians to this day was the power trio's cohesive combination of familiar and unfamiliar elements of punk and primal rock. Sure, you've got the power chords and the four-on-the-floor tempos, but depth and nuance under the biting messaging is essential to the DK's chemistry. Their punk-rock bangers have modal tendencies and atonal flourishes, and some of their most thrilling songs have odd-metered backbones. Their debut single, “California Über Alles,” is a take on composer Maurice Ravel's Boléro, no less. And nobody else in the land of the 6-string shreds quite like East Bay Ray. “One of the reasons our songs have lasted so long is the structure underneath has a lot in common with a Beatles song or a Motown song or even a '30s standard,” he says. “There are basic constructions that make a song work. I really had a hard time copying or figuring out solos off my favorite recordings when learning to play, so I'd develop my own musical method to get from one place to another. It's actually a lack of technique that helped with the music.” His creativity and resourcefulness don't stop there. East Bay Ray was the band's co-producer/engineer on most recordings, and he's tinkered with his own tone tools, assembling partscasters that best suited his approach. Ray has jammed humbuckers into the bridge of a T-style for a twangier bite that helps his rapid-fire arpeggios sting a bit more. He's slapped on short-scale Japanese F-style necks for slinkier playability. And, most notably, he put a Maestro Echoplex in front of his amp to create the signature clanging sound heard on his classic recordings with the band. (“One of my favorite records of all time is Elvis Presley's Sun Sessions. That is one of the records that inspired me to get an Echoplex, to get that slapback echo.”) “We just didn't know the rules on what to play and how to play,” he relates. “That's where not knowing something forces you to make your own solution, creating something unique and new, proving that necessity is the mother of invention. The lack of technique and knowledge helped create our sound and the music.” Before the Dead Kennedys' headlining show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl on June 15th, PG hit the stage for a brief but illuminating tone talk.
