Send us a textIn this powerful episode of PROCAST BY JOSH we sit down with Kenny Kim, a longtime friend, competitor, and fitness entrepreneur. Our journey together started many years ago when I first met Kenny during his bodybuilding debut, and from there, we built not only a strong coach-athlete relationship but a lasting friendship.Kenny's journey is nothing short of inspiring. Moving from Korea to Australia in 2015, he initially worked in factories to survive and get on his feet. The challenges of adjusting to life in a new country with next to no money were immense. Yet, despite the hardships, Kenny remained focused on his passion for fitness and eventually transitioned back into the fitness industry—a field he had always loved. Shortly after, he joined the Pro Team as a coach, where we worked together to help him grow. But Kenny's story doesn't stop there. With determination, focus, and a clear vision, he took the leap and opened his own personal training studio—Body 2 Life. This move marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey, which has now led him to even greater success. In this episode, we talk about the challenges of starting over from scratch, the difficulties of moving overseas, and the perseverance it took to push through with so little. As we discuss throughout the conversation, if you stay determined, focused, and committed to what you're passionate about, you'll eventually get to where you want to be.We also dive into Kenny's competitive bodybuilding journey, which has become a significant part of his business. He now helps many clients step on stage, showing them how health and fitness can truly change their lives. Kenny's passion for helping others, pushing them in the gym, and his contagious energy—what we like to call "Kenergy"—is at the heart of everything he does.In addition to his thriving fitness studio, Kenny recently took on the role of QLD ANB Promoter, working with a well-established bodybuilding federation. With his growing fitness business and the success of his Cafe 63 ventures, Kenny is living proof that hard work, determination, and staying true to your passion will lead to incredible success. This episode is packed with valuable lessons for anyone looking to overcome obstacles and build something meaningful. Kenny's story will inspire you to push through challenges and keep moving forward, no matter how tough things get.If you'd like to contact Kenny, follow his journey, or find out more about Body 2 Life and Competing with ANB, make sure you follow him on Instagram or reach out here.If you'd like to be a guest on one of our future PROCAST epsiodes, make sure you reach out here, we'd love to share your story and inspire others along the way.Support the show

With Nolan in the books, Andrew and Dave start a new directorial series with Greta Gerwig and the 2023 phenomenon, Barbie. Like the rest of the internet, the guys can't help but discuss the movie as a contrasting piece to Oppenheimer, noting the wild disparity in tone, colour, as well as bespoke song and dance numbers. Dave goes wild for the unrelenting satire of the film, and finds a lot of himself in the Allan character. Andrew brings his best Kenergy and draws a lot of parallels to golden era musicals, while reminding us to buck the patriarchy and let ourselves cry at a movie if it feels right. The guys discuss the radically different experiences of men and women in both the real world and Barbieland, the dubious concept of corporate ethics, and the power of absurdity to make us question norms. Will Gerwig bust up our boys club? Will Barbie do what its contemporary, Oppenheimer, could not? Find out this week on Hell of a Picture.
The Summer Box Office Has to Be Graded on a Curve Yet Again With no MCU movie to start off the season, this year's strike-addled blockbuster lineup will likely fall short of 2023 Excluding the COVID impact on 2020 and 2021, this year marks the first time since 2006 that the summer moviegoing season won't begin with a Marvel release during the first weekend of May. The lack of a superheroic kickoff to blockbuster season is a glaring symptom of a larger reality: The disruption caused by the 2023 Hollywood strikes is going to limit how high the summer box office can climb. Alongside Disney, which was forced to vacate its favorite MCU release slot, the strikes also pushed films like "Mission: Impossible 8" to 2025, with not much to take their place. It will take several major surprises - like 2023's "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" - to match last year's $4 billion domestic total. Insiders at analytics firm Gower Street, while leaving open the potential for upside, project a box office total of $3.3 billion in North America this summer, putting it in the neighborhood of the $3.39 billion total recorded in 2022. From the get-go, because of the strikes any comparisons between this summer's box office and those of past years will immediately be marked with a huge asterisk."This summer is a one-off, and I think everyone in the industry knows that," Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock told The Wrap. "What I want to know is, how do these sequels play compared to last summer?" Bock is holding out some optimism that despite a slow start, there may be some unexpected over-performance later in the summer. Universal/87North's original action romcom "The Fall Guy" may become a modest box office success if moviegoers have enough Kenergy in them to see Ryan Gosling in another comedic role. But it likely won't bring theaters the $118 million opening or $358.9 million domestic run that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" delivered in summer 2023. "We've seen that Imax and other premium (large) formats help make these franchise films feel like big events, and the fact that more PLF-supported films are coming out across the summer may help some of those films do better than some of the sequels we saw last year," he said. That premium support will come in July, when the season's biggest titles arrive. Universal/Illumination's "Despicable Me 4" could be the sole $1 billion-plus hit of the summer if it can top the $370 million domestic/$940 million global run of "Minions: The Rise of Gru" in 2022. Marvel Studios' "Deadpool & Wolverine," due out on July 26, also has an outside chance of joining "Joker" as the second R-rated film to hit $1 billion. Though simply topping the $786 million global total of "Deadpool 2" would be a win for Disney, which inherited Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's heroes in 2019 from the 20th Century Fox merger. But the quantity of high-performing films is likely to be fewer. In 2023, 13 films grossed over $100 million at the domestic box office, including some surprises like Angel Studios' cultural phenomenon "Sound of Freedom." Among those movies, five grossed more than $250 million domestically: "Barbie," "Oppenheimer," "Guardians Vol. 3," "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" and "The Little Mermaid."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
Lingthusiasm - A podcast that's enthusiastic about linguistics
Sometimes two words are smooshed together in a single act of creativity to fill a lexical gap, like making "brunch" from breakfast+lunch. Other times, words are smooshed together gradually, over a long period of speakers or signers discovering more efficient ways to position their mouth or hands, such as pronouncing "handbag" being pronounced more like "hambag". In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about smooshing words together. We talk about the history of portmanteau words like motel and chortle, the poem Jabberwocky, and why some portmanteaus, like Kenergy from Ken + energy, sound really satisfying, while others (wonut??) just don't catch on at all. We also talk about words becoming more efficient to produce over time, like how a path can be gradually created through many people choosing the same route through a field, such as "going to" becoming "gonna" or the historical forms of ASL "remember" and French "aujourd'hui". Read the transcript here: lingthusiasm.com/post/750684727053352960/transcript-episode-92-smooshing Announcements: In this month's bonus episode we get enthusiastic about secret codes and the word games we create based on them!! We talk about using alternate symbols to encode messages like in semaphore, Morse code, as well as repurposing existing symbols like the Caesar cipher, ROT13, and cryptoquote puzzles. We also talk about cryptic crosswords, which aren't technically a kind of cryptography but were used to recruit codebreakers for Bletchley Park in World War II, as well as Navajo, Choctaw, and other Native American code talkers who used their language skills to transmit messages in both world wars that were much harder to crack than a mere cipher. Richies, put a fork in awards season, 'cause it's done. Hollywood honored itself last night at the 96th Academy Awards. The big winner was “Oppenheimer,” which racked up an impressive seven Oscars, including Best Picture. There were also a couple of history-making wins. One for Cillian Murphy - who played the real-life Oppenheimer - and another for Billie Eilish, who composed the Oscar-winning song for “Barbie.” And speaking of "Barbie," Ryan Gosling brought the house down with some amazing Kenergy. His live performance of “I'm Just Ken” not only got a standing O, but split Emma Stone's gown in the process. It was such a high that we've almost forgotten that Al Pacino totally botched the last award of the night. Almost. Richies, all we can say is, we're happy to see another Hollywood award season in the rearview mirror.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

With everyone still in the hazy afterglow of Oscar, I opted to prerecord this episode of BEHIND THE LENS with two brand new exclusive interviews for you with MARK BRISTOL talking ACCIDENTAL TEXAN and JAMES HAWES talking the powerful ONE LIFE. Fresh off the Kenergy of last nights 96th Academy Awards, I'm taking a look at some of the highs ("I'm Just Ken") and the lows (the In Memoriam segment) of the broadcast. And then we look ahead with some films that are part of the Oscars 2025 pack. First, you'll hear my exclusive interview with director MARK BRISTOL discussing his new film, the light, bright and heartfelt ACCIDENTAL TEXAN, starring Thomas Haden Church, Rudy Pankow, Carrie-Anne Moss, Bruce Dern, and a scene-stealing turn by Eddie the Cow. A fun film filled with heart, our conversation reflects the fun of the film itself. Then history comes to life thanks to director JAMES HAWES as we discuss his feature directorial debut with ONE LIFE. An acclaimed television filmmaker, James brings us the story of Sir Nicky Winton, a man who helped save 669 refugee children in Prague during WWII. Eloquent and sensitive in its telling, James and I cover the ins and outs of the "making of" and hear his thoughts on the timeliness and poignancy of the film's release given today's political and war-torn climate. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week, Nigel and Tazziii go pink to take on the patriarchy as we're joined by content creators Saskia Cole and Gael Level for a deep dive into Greta Gerwig's thought-provoking take on the pop culture icon that is Barbie (starting at 23:13). The discussion this week is wide-ranging, from the origins of the famous doll and previous attempts at a movie adaptation to the narrative itself. We delve into this story's use of familiar film tropes as we compare Barbie to the Matrix, and give our take on the deeper meaning of the film including the issues of feminism and the female perspective. This week's storytelling tip is all about delivering a message through your narrative as a creator.

“Kenergy” is all the rage. Why? Because men are ready to modernize masculinity. If you've watched the movie “Barbie” released this week, you may understand that Kenergy can be understood as a positive framing of masculinity, which challenges toxic portrayals of traditional male traits. The term draws inspiration from the character Ken, who plays a supportive role in his relationship with Barbie. Ken's character stands in contrast to conventional gender norms that expect men to be dominant and stoic, and to avoid embracing traits perceived as "weak." Ken's role as a supportive partner for Barbie illustrates a deviation from stereotypical gender expectations, wherein men are often expected to take on dominant roles in relationships. The concept of “Kenergy” suggests that breaking free from these rigid gender scripts can lead to a more genuine expression of masculinity, and ultimately more happiness for men. Masculinity has long been associated with stoicism, patriarchy, and self-reliance, but these traditional norms have proven detrimental to men's mental health. Higher rates of suicide, lower rates of help-seeking, and increased substance use and violence among men highlight the urgency for change. In his book "Man Kind: Tools for Mental Health, Well-Being, and Modernizing Masculinity," counseling psychologist Dr. Zachary Gerdes presents a transformative framework to help men foster collaboration, embrace vulnerability, and build mental resilience. By challenging outdated concepts of masculinity, Gerdes offers a path toward improved mental health and well-being for men. Societal expectations that encourage men to suppress emotions and avoid seeking help exacerbate men's mental health challenges. In this podcast, Dr. Gerdes covers the LIFT model of helping men modernize ideas about masculinity and live happier lives. On The Movies We've Never Seen Podcast, we talk about a movie that one or more of the hosts have not seen. In the fist half of the episode, we talk about our pre-viewing thoughts, expectations and impressions about it punctuated by a small trivia quiz and other fun facts. We then give the movie a tentative rating (on a scale of 0-5 Snake Plisskens) based on the discussion. We then come to the intermission, where we take a break and watch the film in question. In the second half we have a similar conversation and discuss our post-viewing thoughts and see how right, wrong or on the nose we were about the film and give it our final rating. Greetings to all you Barbies and Kens! In honor of the release of the much hyped Barbie movie, Tony and Evan decided to bring the “Kenergy” and devote episode 21 to all things Barbie! Mattel, the parent company that owns Barbie, has had their fair share of lawsuits involving Barbie, especially the use of the Barbie trademark. Evan and Tony lead things off with a lawsuit between Greiner & Hauser gMBH and Mattel (04:06) and how Mattel was originally accused of ripping off Barbie from a German doll called Bild Lilli. G&H and Mattel ended up settling but 50 years later, G&H gMBH pursued a lawsuit against Mattel, alleging their 1964 settlement agreement was no longer enforceable. Then, Tony and Evan talk about the iconic Mattel v. MCA Records case (14:55) and how a song called "Barbie Girl" was afforded protection under the First Amendment by way of the Rogers v. Grimaldi test. Tony and Evan then talk about Mattel's very brief trademark infringement lawsuit against Rap Snacks after the snack brand created a line of BBQ chips featuring Nicki Minaj but used the word "Barbie" in pink cursive on the front of the chip packaging (23:30). Finally, Evan and Tony share their favorite Barbie marketing collabs in connection with the new Barbie movie (31:43). We're on Shayk!
