One last episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast to enjoy before the new year! This time Sami and Benjamin take a look at the hybrid, all-wheel-drive sedans in the Toyota lineup, starting with Sami's review of the 2025 Toyota Camry XSE AWD. Now exclusively available as a hybrid, this Camry has a whole new look and powertrain, but how does it compare to the Honda Accord Hybrid the guys talked about last week? And why does Sami feel a strange tapping in his back every time he stops? Then Benjamin brings up the smaller, more affordable 2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD, which delivers solid fuel efficiency, but is lacking other positive distinguishing factors, especially compared to other options in this segment. He also chimes in with some impressions about the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV. Finally the guys answer some listener questions about Chinese automakers taking over certain markets. Thanks for listening everyone, we'll see you in the new year!

The Unnamed Automotive Podcast goes full hybrid this week! After a brief conversation describing the type of friendship they possess and cherish, Sami and Benjamin dive right into the world of Honda Hybrids. Sami starts the episode off with the 2025 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring, a responsive, efficient and well equipped sedan that is easy to like, if it weren't for one pesky little issue: the price. Then Benjamin brightens up the discussion by bringing up the 2025 Honda Civic Sedan Hybrid, which uses much of the same running gear, but somehow whiffed on its infotainment system. Benjamin investigates as to whether he's the problem here, or if Honda has a wider software issue to resolve. Thanks for listening!

Honda is ushering in the 11th generation of its famed Accord with the 2023 model year, and this might be the year when the hybrid finally takes the reins. Honda's 11th-gen Accord brings a totally restyled exterior that follows the styling direction seen with the new Civic and CR-V, with thin lamps and a more minimalist design. Inside the Accord, you're met with a similarly redesigned interior, which follows the same clean and wide styling seen, again, on the new Civic. Though, unlike the Civic, under the Accord's hood is a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle I4 mill that works with a dual-motor hybrid system. This system is good for 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the 1.5-liter turbocharged I4 is also available, which mates to a CVT, if you want to forgo the hybrid system. The turbocharged mill does make less power at 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, though. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the new Accord and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a guided tour of the '23 Accord and highlights some of his favorite exterior and interior features. Later, Wren takes you along for a live drive review of the latest Accord. Patrick Carone joins to chat with Wren about the latest from Honda. The pair talk about the Honda Accord Hybrid's specs, its competition, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes this Honda Accord Hybrid special.

While the Lexus NX has underwhelmed many in previous incarnations, the 2023 NX 450h F Sport gets the recipe right. It is luxurious and fun to drive at the same time, as Host Jack Nerad found during his week-long road test of the small luxury crossover. With 302 horsepower on tap from its plug-in hybrid powertrain, the NX takes on a performance-oriented demeanor that other trims in the line only hint at. On top of the extra juice, the plug-in version provides buyers with 37 miles of all-electric range. The icing on the cake is stellar fuel economy. The 450h is EPA-rated at 84 MPGe. Inside, the NX delivers a Lexus level of luxury. And the new Lexus multimedia systems do not disappoint. They are easy to use and full-featured in ways that the previous Lexus systems were not. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague takes a long look at the all-new 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid. After being reluctant about hybrids for years, Honda has recently done an about-face on the technology. For the 2023 model year, the top-level Accords all boast hybrid powertrains. The top-of-the-line Accords also feature a new and mightily improved infotainment setup, as Tague describes this week. In the news, a major global automaker says it might be forced to limit shipments of some of its vehicles to states that have adopted the California fuel economy and air quality standards. If you are a Left Coast musclecar fan this might be extremely bad news. We'll tell you which automaker it is and what the issues are in this episode. Tesla still has some safety investigations to deal with, but it is out of the woods in at least one of them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced it is closing a probe of a controversial former Tesla feature that allowed occupants to play games on its infotainment screen while the vehicle was in motion. And in the true crime files automotive edition, A Turkish court has made rulings in cases involving former Nissan chief and now fugitive Carlos Ghosn. Our guest for you this week is Brent Gruber, Executive Director of the Electric Vehicle Practice at J.D. Power. He is extremely knowledgeable about what's going on with EVs and, in particular, consumer attitudes about them. He will share them with us this week America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

#250, The Weekly Driver’s 2022 Cars of the Year

THE WEEKLY DRIVER

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2022 34:09

Selecting the cars of the year helps celebrate another year reviewing new cars and trucks, visiting auto shows and talking with vintage car owners, book authors and industry experts about their cars of the year. There are always great and not-so-great moments driving vehicles. The industry is always abuzz. There are always changes, oddball statistics, recalls and new models and makes. What has Elon Musk done now? Will autonomous driving and EVs ever make a significant difference? Will low-profile tires stop blowing while negotiating small divots in the road? Will Audi ever change its front-grille design? As much as the automotive industry changes, sometimes not much happens. In 2007, the year the iPhone debuted, the starting price of the Toyota Corolla was $14,925; In 2022, the year a robotic toy cat that nibbles for human comfort made its debut, the starting price of a Toyota Corolla was $20,245. The average price of a new car in 2007 was $27,958. In 2022, the new car price average surpassed $48,000. Three years after TheWeeklyDriver.com debuted, I began to compile a list of top-10 cars of the year. It was also in 2007. The list is now in its 16th year. The 2022 Ford Lightning is the first full-size electric pickup truck. It was on the TheWeeklyDriver.com's list of cars of the year. Image © James Raia/2022. As co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast, Bruce Aldrich and I have expanded my yearly list of cars of the year and detailed the choices during a podcast episode. We're now in our sixth year. Many automotive publications select their best vehicles of the year at the start of the calendar year. I've always announced the selections at the end of the year. Bruce and I agree it's a better approach while reviewing current model year cars throughout the calendar year. Sometimes, a new year's model debuts prior to its corresponding calendar year. Sometimes, new models arrive later in the year. The 2017 Bentley Bentayga is the fastest SUV ever made. It topped TheWeeklyDriver.com's list of cars of the year in 2017. Image © Michael Kahn/Frogstone Media, 2017. This year, as per usual, I reviewed about 40 cars. Bruce also drove most of them, often to lunch after our podcasts and sometimes for extended review sessions. For several years, we made videos before switching to a podcast format. During some years, we've picked a car of the year, like the 2020 Corvette Stingray, the debut year of the mid-engine model. In 2017, the Bentley Bentayga was easily our favorite. In our 250th episode, Bruce and I discuss our respective lists of cars of the year, an exercise we compile individually and then share during the podcast. We mostly make the same selections. The 2020 Corvette stunned the auto world with its mid-engine design and new interior and exterior styling. It was theweeklydriver.com's top pick for 2020 Cars of the Year. Image © James Raia. One exception this year: Bruce selected the BMW M3 Competition; it didn't make my list. We didn't pick a top car of the year in 2022, but we agreed the Ford Lighting was the vehicle we liked the most for its innovation in the expanding electric vehicle segment. The 2022 Jeep Compass takes the compact SUV to a new level of comfort and functionality, and it is one of the vehicles we review in this edition of America on the Road. Co-host Chris Teague took delivery of the Compass in the midst of a vicious Maine winter, and he will tell us whether the newest version lives up to the legendary 4x4 reputation Jeep vehicles have established. Among other things the new Compass is the most technologically advanced Jeep Compass ever, so how does it stack up against the other leaders in that redhot segment. Also in the road test segment Host Jack Nerad and his wife embarked on a 500-mile two-day trek from SoCal to Central California to visit one of their three daughters at college. Their vehicle for the trip was the Honda Accord Hybrid, and the journey was a revelation. If you think all hybrids are alike you need to listen to this episode. Our special guest is this week is Dave Sowers, head of Marketing for RAM Commercial vehicles. While we don't typically cover commercial trucks on the show, more and more big vans are becoming lifestyle and getaway vehicles for consumers, so Host Jack Nerad sat down with Dave Sowers to discuss that trend. With a boom in interest in getting outdoors, the ProMaster has become a hot commodity for upscale adventurers. In the news segment we answer the provocative questions: Do you live in one of the best states for driving? Or are you living one of the worst? We'll reveal the results of a new study and contribute our opinions on it. Also in the news, BMW is sending a fond farewell to an engine that has served it well for decades. And there wrapping a car around that engine that will cost 12 lucky American buyers $200,000 each.

According to Honda, the new 2021 Accord Hybrid is the version of the car you should buy. Why? That's one of the many questions we asked Honda product planner Jerry Chang about the model that has become an American icon. He and host Jack Nerad discuss how the revised edition of the ever-popular sedan has been prepared to please a new cohort of Millennial buyers. In the car review segment co-host Chris Teague takes a long look at a car that has always been a car enthusiast's favorite, the Mazda Mazda3. Did Mazda enhance the car's reputation with its changes for 2021 or does it fall on its face? Also in the car review segment Jack Nerad reveals his very unexpected affection for the all-new 2021 Toyota Sienna minivan. Nerad isn't typically a minivan guy, but the new Sienna with its exclusively hybrid powertrain and cleverly designed interior won him over. He'll tell you why. The 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid brings new tech to the midsize sedan market. Taking a look at the news Nerad counts down the most stolen vehicles of 2020, and the two hosts kick around recent announcements by Volvo and MINI about those two brands' respective electrification efforts. Achieving their lofty goals might stretch credulity. Read about another Mazda favorite
