Ricky's career journey started as a teenager in Kennywood's food and beverage department, selling hot sausages and hot dogs. This early role ignited a passion for food that would shape his career. After gaining experience at Idlewild and Sandcastle Waterpark, where he also led a multimillion-dollar rebranding project, Ricky returned to his roots at Kennywood, bringing full circle a lifelong connection to the park. In this interview, Ricky talks about treating every interaction like an interview, keeping history in every decision, and the Potato Patch Fries secret menu. Treating Every Interaction Like an Interview  "You have to treat every interaction as if it's an interview. No matter what... you're putting your best foot forward, you're selling yourself, you're selling your passion."   Ricky emphasized the importance of always being "on," whether interacting with consultants, park guests, or colleagues from other parks. He learned early in his career that these interactions build reputation and recognition. This mindset helped him grow from an entry-level food service role to becoming a general manager. Persistence and passion were key, as he constantly sought to be visible to leadership while maintaining a genuine love for the park and industry. Ricky's philosophy underscores the importance of professionalism in even the smallest encounters. History in Every Decision “Our history is in every decision we make, no matter what. Every project we do, we're thinking about the history of Kennywood."   At Kennywood, a park steeped in 126 years of history, every decision honors its past. Ricky spoke about how projects, whether a new ride or renovations, are always made with consideration for Kennywood's legacy. He shared examples like the installation of a modern ride that paid homage to the long-gone Swing Around, and the creation of Jeter's Pub, a nod to a mascot from the 1970s, which doubles as a museum filled with park memorabilia. This commitment to blending the old with the new ensures Kennywood remains relevant to both nostalgic long-time visitors and younger generations. The Potato Patch Fries Secret Menu “If you're feeling a little excited, you go, I just say like a tablespoon, that's all you need, of the gravy... the hidden way to do it."   Ricky shared his personal favorite way to enjoy Kennywood's famous Potato Patch Fries—seasoned salt, cheese, bacon, and just a tablespoon of gravy. This combination, he explains, adds a subtle richness without overwhelming the dish. Although this unique twist isn't officially on the menu, Ricky humorously suggests it could be considered part of a "secret menu." His love for food and attention to small details shine through as he shares this insider tip with pride.     To learn more about Kennywood, visit www.kennywood.com. Director and Producer (and Editor!) Bryan Storkel from SideStilt Films Meeting up with Bryan Storkel from SideStilt Films: Intro by sam: Welcome Bryan Storkel. Interview:You bill yourself as both producer and director here plus you do editing too.  How do you juggle so many hats? Are you the lead writer on these as well?  What's your origin story in the industry, did you graduate from making shorts?  PEZ Outlaw just landed on Netflix (and is available to buy on all major stores)!  What can you tell us a bit about that project and your role on it? How in the world did that come to your attention? I watched it last night and it's got a lot of heart. Woah, IMDB says your “Legend of Cocaine Island” documentary is being transformed into a movie with Will Ferrell? Is that true?  What's the current status on that? Is this your first foray into commercial features?  How excited are you to jump to features? Are you a home theater guy yourself?  What's your setup like?  How about movie theater viewing? Got a favorite local spot? What's up next for you career wise and./or for your studio? What else in your background should folks dig into? That doc on Christian card counters sounds wild and has gone into my “to watch” list. You seem to have a foot into the sports documentary world too. Anything else you'd like to talk about or promote?

María Thelma Smáradóttir is a talented actor in Iceland. During this interview, she gives some insight on what it was like growing up in Iceland with Icelandic and Thai heritage. She was the first person of Asian descent to graduate from the Icelandic Academy of Arts in Drama. It was fascinating to hear how she had to navigate this mixed heritage and it has been like for her as a working actor in the theater and film industry here. I think it's fantastic that she had a one woman show called “Welcome Home”, which was a spoken word performance of her mother’s immigrant story from Thailand.  The most epic thing is that her first feature film was her starring alongside Mads Mikkelsen in the movie, "Arctic". How awesome is that?! As you can probably tell from many of my other interviews, I love to have different people from all walks of life in Iceland to tell their stories. I am grateful and honored that María Thelma was open to sharing hers. Questions I Asked María Thelma during the Interview: You are born and raised in Iceland, and you have a mix of Thai and Icelandic heritage. Can you talk about what it was like growing up in a Thai and Icelandic household? Was your mom speaking Thai to you and your siblings and your dad speaking Icelandic? You are the first person of Asian descent to graduate from the Icelandic Academy of Arts in drama. Did you always want to be an actor when you were growing up? Have you visited Thailand? If so, what was that like for you? During your final year of the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, you chose to do a spoken word play called “Welcome Home”, which was performed at the National Theater of Iceland. Can you explain what the play was about and the inspiration behind it? How was the play received in Iceland? What did your mother think of it? What has being an actor been like for you? Have you found that you get many roles or has it been a  struggle? In 2018, you starred alongside Mads Mikkelsen in  “Arctic”, which was your first feature film. What was that experience like? How was it working with such a big name in the industry? Do you think the film industry in Iceland is changing to showcase more diversity in the country? Meaning, are they showing more Icelandic actors that have mixed heritage as Icelanders and not foreign nationals or visitors? Or is this something that still needs to be improved? What advice do you have for people who want to act, whether it is on screen or on a stage in a theater? What is your favourite Icelandic word or phrase? Join the All Things Iceland Patreon Community Some of you might be aware that one of my goals for the podcast is to travel around Iceland more to interview different people in each region. In July, I set up the All Things Iceland community on Patreon. It’s a membership platform that was founded in 2013. It allows for creators like me to provide exclusive content to listeners like you in exchange for a monthly subscription. Are you looking for a way to cash-flow huge properties that nobody else wants to buy? Are you looking for long-term solid residual income? Do you want to own a business that is both impactful and profitable? Do you want to get involved in residential assisted living but you don't know where to start? In this episode of Passion for Real Estate Investments, Gene Guarino, founder and CEO of the Residential Assisted Living Academy, shares his story from buying his first home at the age of 18 to training thousands of investors throughout the United States. His move into residential assisted living started when his mother became ill and he couldn't find what he was looking for. This is when he vowed to create it. Gene has more than 30 years of experience investing in real estate, and he has been training investors and entrepreneurs for over 25 years. He got into real estate at a younger age, and it soon became a natural way to make a lot of money – in his early 20s, he was earning more than his father who was a college professor. When he first got involved in residential assisted living 7 years ago, there was nobody to teach him or show him how to do it, so he had to figure it out on his own. Today, he shows investors the ropes with immersion-based training. Do you need a college degree to get involved in real estate investing? What kinds of assets does Gene look for? Do you have to go for variances to have these homes approved? What do you need to keep the residents happy? Gene tells us about the advantages and disadvantages of investing in residential assisted living, how you can set up your business to minimize risk and deal with challenges, and the expectations versus the reality of getting involved with RAL. If you're interested in learning more about residential assisted living, and what to look out for, this episode has the information you need. Highlights from the Interview “You see the A-student working for the B-student, and the C-student owns the building.” “Teach me what I need to know as fast as you can.” “You can start in this business and make more with no degree than someone with all the degrees and accolades.” Gene built up his RAL business by teaching himself. Gene couldn't find what he needed, so he created it.

Our co-host Ted Lowe sat down for an interview with friend of the podcast, Todd Graham. Todd is a speaker, author and the family pastor at Eastside Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. He’s got many years of experience leading marriage and family ministries at a few different churches across the country. Todd has been married for 19 years and has three kids. Todd has also been very involved with MarriedPeople over the years. He’s written for our blog, spoken at our conferences, and been a tremendous leader behind the scenes. But perhaps our favorite thing about Todd is his transparency. Todd gives so much hope through what he does by being real about the tough stuff. Todd shares about his struggle with depression, the impact it has had on his marriage, and how he has learned to handle his depression in a way that is actually helpful and empowering to his marriage.  It’s important to note that Todd is talking about people who experience every day, common depression tendencies vs. those who need legit professional help.   Interview You were a first responder before being a pastor. Talk a little about that. While I was pastoring I was a police officer in a county just north of Atlanta for several years and I’ve also worked on their fire department and part time in the trauma department at the children’s hospital. How has depression impacted you personally as a husband and dad? As a pastor, I see it all the time. The thing about depression is that it never just impacts one person—it also impacts their marriage. It’s a lonely thing because it can be a taboo topic. I’ve struggled with it for years—probably most of my life. It’s amazing how many leaders deal with it. Why do you think people suffer in silence with this? Why don’t we talk about it? Most of the people I talk with that are dealing with it ask the same thing. Things like diabetes or other illnesses are provable—you can document and put them on paper and there are clear action steps to take care of them. But the emotional or mental conditions are more difficult. And there are so many different types. I think a lot of people don’t even realize they’re dealing with it.  What would you say to people who don’t understand the struggle? That is one of the biggest struggles that makes people who are dealing with it not want to talk about it. Depression is not something you can just turn off or turn on. It takes them over and they don’t know how to deal with it. You often don’t know how to deal with it and don’t even want to because nothing can fix it right away. It’s a multi-faceted thing that takes you over physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. How do you respond to Christians who say “Isn’t Jesus enough”? That’s just one more reason people won’t talk about it. So many people come into my office hurt by statements like that. Christ is supposed to be our joy. But the thing is that things aren’t working right in your head. If you’re having a hard time figuring that out, it doesn’t mean you’re broken or that there’s anything wrong with your relationship with Jesus. What’s the difference between sadness and depression? Everyone experiences sadness, but one of the biggest myths about depression is that it’s sadness. Sadness is just a byproduct. Depression is when the passion of life actually fades—your desire to do things that make life what it is goes away. You become cynical and feel drained. You can get numb without being sad. What are the differences with people you see who are in depression? Guys have a tendency to get angrier about it. In general, men are fixers. When they can’t fix it, they tend to get angry. Women tend to be sadder, because they’re sad that they’re sad and can’t figure out why. Other clues are that little things will get you disproportionately angry or frustrated. Or things that are a big deal aren’t a big deal anymore and you stop taking care of things. Passion in life fades and things you usually like to do don’t excite you anymore. Some people start sleeping more to get away from it. Laughter is often replaced with cynicism and productivity drops. Those are all hints when you get into a cycle or become constant. What does this look like for people who are married to someone with depression? A lot of times people don’t know. It can be very difficult for the person who is dealing with depression to communicate how dark it gets on the inside. If your spouse is trying to explain this to you, realize the effort that took to explain to you. Many times, it can be hard to separate between marital issues and depression. When it doesn’t feel like one of the spouses is energized by the relationship, it can feel like something is wrong between them. Which is often not the case. It really has nothing to do with the other person, but it can be hard not to feel like it’s about you. How do people usually respond to a spouse with depression? Men in particular are fixers and they want to press a button and fix their spouse. If you love the person you’re going to want to fix it to help them feel better. But with depression, another person can’t fix you. At this point, it’s common for both spouses to want to fix it. But just to have someone understand helps a lot. When your spouse is dealing with something like this and fixing doesn’t work, the spouse not dealing with it runs out of ideas and feels like they’ve done their best. They can internalize it and feel like they’re broken. It’s easy to get defensive when you’ve done your very best and putting all your effort into marriage and there’s nothing positive coming out of it. It can feel like they aren’t enough for the other spouse.   Do you see a change with how the church is handling depression? Yes, we are talking about it more and we need to talk about it. There are so many different levels of depression/burnout that a lot of it could be stopped before it gets intense by just talking about it. There’s a big difference between clinical depression and ‘regular everyday’ depression that’s being triggered by anxiety. We can do something about that second part, and if people dealing with the first part get more comfortable talking about it they can get the help they need. How have you handled your own depression? I didn’t know I was dealing with it for a while. One day, I read a blog post by Carey Nieuwhof and he was listing the top clues to know you’re burning out. I read that article and realized I was all of them. It explained what was happening. No one had ever talked about it. That was my wakeup call. For me, I pick one thing physically, mentally and spiritually to do every day. If nothing else happens for the day, at least I did one thing. I’m a runner and I’ll get in over 1,000 miles this year. Most of those are to prevent the darkness from taking me over. Get outside and do something physically. How do you get yourself up off the couch when you’re struggling with depression? The first step is getting out the door. Go for a walk. Last night, I was planning on going on a long run and I went for a mile walk instead. The enemy of depression is doing something, because when it’s eating at you, you want to do nothing. Start with one meal and choose something grown from the ground instead of produced. Everything counts, no matter how big or small it is. The physical stuff is a game changer.  What are some other solutions for dealing with depression? I always do something mentally every day. I’m a reader because I know it betters me and makes my mind stronger. Any kind of book you can read will activate the part of your brain that’s not is not wanting to function and will help kick start you out of the cycle. I also use The 5 Minute Journal. It starts out with three things you’re grateful for and closes you out with one thing that happened during the day that you’re grateful for. There’s a lot of research on it and how it keeps you in a positive headspace. Spiritually, I try to do one thing every day—get into a devotional to keep me connected. Just knowing that God loves you and believing that Jesus came and died for you, that’s great. But it doesn’t fix things around you. It gives you a new perspective on how to deal with things. Knowing who Jesus is isn’t the answer, but adding him back into the equation in your daily life is. These aren’t quick fixes but they are the road for keeping your head about you and keep the dark times from staying so dark. What are your views on depression medication? God designed the brain so incredibly. When you’re in a space where you can handle and manage yourself, you should do everything in your power to do that. But there are cases where people need help, and God placed doctors who can help us. Medication scan be incredibly important for people who need them. Anyone who says people shouldn’t take medication are speaking out of ignorance. I don’t think they’re trying to be mean, but they don’t understand. Sometimes we need some help and that’s the route to go. What should people do if they’re feeling hopeless? Those are people listening to the lies in their head. The dream is that they would experience life fully every day. But if you’re not there right now, take it moment-by-moment. You’re here and you’ve brought a smile to someone’s face or changed someone’s day. It’s hard to find hope in that dark space because you don’t feel you have value but that’s just not true. You can go prove it by doing something for someone. How important is community and letting people in? Isolation is what kills a lot of relationships. One of the difficult things about depression is that you do feel isolated. It’s why talking about it helps so tremendously—you find out it’s not just you. You are not the only person who is dealing with this. I say the same thing to spouses—you’re not the only person in this position. Keep up the work and know you’re not alone in this. Your one simple thing: For those struggling with depression, pick one thing physically, mentally or spiritually (or all three) and do that each day. For the spouse, don’t take it personal. Keep answering your spouse’s question (for men: “Do I have what it takes?” and for women: “Would you pick me again?) and you’ve done your best. I know transactional funding is used for back to back closings that must take place the same day. I know the law states that the homeowner who's being foreclosed on has a six month redemption period to stay in their home without paying a mortgage, they can reclaim their property and they cant be evicted unless they refuse to allow an inspection or if they damage the property.  So with that being said can transactional funding still be used as long as the end buyer is ok with purchasing a foreclosure that has a six month redemption period? Or should I check with the companies or local court houses that hold the auctions to find out if transactional funding is allowed for tax and bank foreclosures? They're also what we use now to optimize and manage our finances, and ensure that we're paying the lowest fees while getting solid returns on our investments.  Questions Asked During the Interview: You and I went through the entire financial planning process together, with you as our financial planner. After you created the financial plan for us, one of the insights that came out of it, which goes against what we hear in the media a lot is that if you were to retire or semi-retire right now, you don't necessarily always need a 1 million dollar or more investment portfolio to pull it off.For example, our portfolio wasn't at $1 million and all the numbers supported that we still have enough for a full retirement right now. Why do you think we often hear in the media how you need that $1 million dollar portfolio, and why is this not necessarily always the case? To give everyone listening some actionable things that they can do when searching for a financial planner that's right for them, what are the red flags to look out for when meeting with a financial planner/advisor? I really like the process that you and I went through when you did our financial plan, and I think it's a really good example of what the process should be like. So now that we've talked about the negative things to look out for and what we don't want, can you give us a brief overview of your process?. I know this is something you've been optimizing for 20+ years so can you also highlight the critical pieces in the process that everyone should have when working with a financial planner? When you did my plan there were several critical components that you made sure you factored in that could really make a huge impact on whether someone can retire early or not. For anybody looking to do an early retirement, what were these key components that can really shorten the number of years that you need to work? Also, let's break this question down into 2 parts. First, let's talk about the controllable factors (ex. Spending, part time work, etc.) which we can all focus on that have the biggest impact on how early we can retire. And then after that, let's talk about the factors that we can't directly control, but that absolutely need to be factored into the financial plan, no matter who your financial planner or advisor is, because they have such an enormous impact on our ability to retire early (ex. Inflation, CPP and OAS). What I really liked in particular was the summary page that you produced where it talked about things like what's the most we can spend annually and still have enough to stay retired? And how much we actually need to retire? Using our actual numbers and financial plan as a real life example, can you speak to what the results for us were in the context of, what are the answers that we should have from our financial planner when getting a financial plan like this done> Early retirement execution questions: Now that we have all the numbers we need from doing a financial plan, let's switch gears and talk about how to actually execute an early retirement or semi-retirement once you know you have enough in your investments. To start, how should our portfolio change when we move from an accumulation phase (where we're working full-time, saving and investing), to the decumulation phase where we're not working at all or only working part-time. When in retirement, should Canadians tweak their portfolio to generate more yield and try to live off that? or do you suggest just selling-off a percentage of the portfolio every year during good years and keeping a cash cushion during that bad years so that we're not selling our investments when the markets are down? For the fixed income portion of our portfolio how do you decide between using bonds vs doing a GIC ladder? What size of a cash cushion do you suggest for people in retirement or semi-retirement? How should early retirees deal with moving money out of the RRSP early? (Explain what the basic personal amount is here too please) What type of investments should you keep in each of your accounts to help minimize your taxes?

Christine Plonsky is the Women's Athletic Director and the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Services at the University of Texas. Chris has worked in collegiate athletics for 40 years, spending 28 of those years with the Longhorns. She holds (or has held) leadership positions with numerous organizations including the NCAA, USA Basketball and the National Association for Collegiate Directors of Athletics or NACDA, an organization for which she serves as the 2016-17 chair. Interview: You have such an interesting background with so many leadership positions to your credit, I thought it would be fun and useful to spend the majority of our time weaving through those roles and having you share a leadership moment or lesson you recall from each. Very fortunate. Blessed with parents who encouraged her to pursue her passions. Sports was one of those, along with education. Title IX opened up opportunities at the time she was getting going. You got your start working in sports information at your undergraduate institution Kent State; what do you most recall from those early days and is there anything you learned then that you still rely on today? First behind the scenes look at athletics programs Her coach sent her to the Sports Information office to offer to help with stats and publicity for her team; learned about media coverage too Dave Gavitt was a mentor; Providence basketball coach and Big East founder – learned from him that a publicist must know everything but not talk about everything; must be ahead of the media; build confidence and trust with coaches and student athletes; be honest with people Enjoyed melding journalism training with publicity training; she really wanted to be a sports writer, and sort of fell into writing for the sports teams instead of a newspaper (Daniel asking about quick pace of change in communications) – She still misses the print days, but now truth is more valuable, viral and universal. So if you do great work, it can get large exposure quickly and shared. From there you moved on to Iowa State and the University of Texas, continuing to move up in the sports information world. What stands out as career impacting from either of those stops? Proud of UT – began there in the Darrell Royal, Earl Campbell era; was a juggernaut in women's athletics; worked for Donna Lopiano who established the women's athletics department and was a trailblazer; admired for graduation rates, fundraising, competitive success; led to Barbara Jordan, Ann Richards, Jayne Mitchner (big Texas politicians who were plugged into the program) You then spend seven years with the Big East Conference. Talk to us about the transition from a position within a single university to advocating on behalf of a group of universities. The Big East was a manna from heaven opportunity. She was a basketball junkie and admired Villanova '85 and their victory over Georgetown. Got an interview in the summer of '86 and got the job to go work for Gavitt Schools were small, but the TV markets were large, conference was born for basketball at the right time, when ESPN was young and growing Dave would remind them that they were only as strong as the weakest link. Seton Hall was struggling at that time, but within a few years P.J. Carlesimo had them in the NCAA final. The league had a huge role in that. UConn too! Make your weakest link stronger, and your schools will be stronger. Your large schools will usually be fine. Everybody pulls on the same wagon when you're in a conference. Gavitt pushed new ideas like the ACC/Big East challenge – the coaches didn't want one more hard game, but he knew it would be great TV and good for the league, and therefore the teams. Led to international trips as well which are great cultural experiences for the student-athletes and great alumni rally opportunities. It was also during this time you became involved with USA Basketball; how did that come about and what was the experience like? Owe Dave this again! He was head of the USA Basketball's predecessor. John Thompson was the coach of the '88 team which was the last amateur team before the pros took over in '92 (Dream Team). She was involved primarily with the women's program in addition to being a publicist for the men's program. Jerry Colangelo has been amazing the past two cycles alongside Mike Krzyzewski The women have continued their excellence as well – winning gold each Olympics since '92. (Daniel asking about keys to the men's program resurgence) – Starting at ground zero and talking about patriotism; appealing to player's sense of duty; women's program winning too. You then make your return to the University of Texas, this time as an Associate AD over external operations and then after a promotion the Director of Women's Athletics; talk to us about the structure of UT's athletic department since many of us likely aren't familiar with it, and how you and your counterpart on the men's side work together. Unique structure She never thought about being an AD; DeLoss Dodds hired her to look for new revenue generation opportunities (corporate sponsorship, licensing, broadcast rights); also needed her to implement the addition of female sports which was a response to a Title IX lawsuit Operational areas at Texas, which had been completely separate between men/women, began to consolidate and not are completely consolidated; worked on revenue channels which are now managed by IMG, including the Longhorn Network/ESPN. So now she reports to the president for the 11 female sports she oversees, and to the Men's AD Mike Perin for the operational/revenue/external areas. Iowa, Arkansas, Tennessee and BYU were You are currently serving as the chair of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA); tell us what that has been like and why it is important for us to not only participate in industry organizations, but invest our time in leadership roles as well? These are the people who make the industry tick The expertise on these boards are the great passionate leaders of college athletics Tim Selgo (Grand Valley AD/2015-16 NACDA chair) preceded Chris as the chair Rapid fire questions Name one trait or characteristic you look for when you hire someone, and one you try to avoid? Dedication/passion, once the mental capacity/skill set is there What habit has been key to your success? Enjoying the grind; going to work every day and trying to get better One sentence of advice for emerging young leaders? Do the right thing even when no one is looking; leaders are people who innately make good decisions based on good preparation and good knowledge, but they don't need a publicist beside them to make a good/right decision; good leaders inspire, and they inspire when they do the right and fair thing by virtue of their decision making. Former CSTV colleague goes deep into his career path, the power and best approaches to networking, and how to thrive in organizations large and small. Bio (for more):   Scottie has done it all in the world of college athletics. He spent five years with the SEC office, and then five years with the NCAA as its Associate Director for the Division I Women's Basketball Championship. He had a stop at CBS Sports Digital where he and I first connected, before moving on to the Ivy League as its Associate Executive Director, Communications and External Relations. This fall, Scottie began a new chapter in his career when he went on campus at Tulane University to serve as its Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications. Interview: You've worked for a conference, the NCAA, a business partner and now on campus. Talk about how you got each of those opportunities and fill in your career path for us a bit. Most of the opportunities came organically There wasn't a plan to go to each of these stops Began by working the athletic department at the University of Alabama, at the right time (1992) when UA won the national championship in football (Daniel recalling the UA/Miami championship game) Follow up talking about the importance of working for nothing/little early on How the dominos fell for him to land the full-time gig with the SEC one year out of college (Daniel on the key of doing excellent work to position yourself for opportunities) Started a networking group while on the NCAA staff (17:00) Can you give some examples of extraordinary leaders or leadership moments you've witnessed and what made them unique? Roy Kramer – Vanderbilt AD; SEC commish who went from 10 to 12 schools and started the conference championship game trend and also the BCS model/formula Relied on his coaching instincts (won a football national championship) People saw his vision and wanted to get behind it He said jump and Scottie would say “how hi?” Tom Jernstedt – father of the NCAA tournament; president of USA basketball Lived nearby the NCAA office Scottie learned Tom would be in the office on Saturday, and started coming in Saturdays to do extra work and get some time with him Bill Hancock Riding the Blue Moth (26:15) How does leadership change, if at all, when you are talking about a large organization like the NCAA, to a small organization like a conference office? In a large organization, it is critical to get to know people On certain days, he would take a walk up and down a hallway and just start to talking to people Before long he became known as the guy who knew everyone in the building Would take different/long routes to his office from a meeting or on the way in/out to facilitate interacting with people Networking lunches In a smaller organization, didn't do as much of that since you naturally got to know everyone much quicker (35:15 follow up about networking) Don't network just for the sake of networking; look to add value He likes connecting people and putting people together who will do great things When at conferences, don't sit with/talk to the people from your organization; meet new people! Work an NCAA championship; great way to meet people. Goal should be to get to a point in your career when you don't have to seek out new opportunities; they will come to you based on the work you are doing. (Daniel follow up on the CALS conference re: Will Reece, and how true networking is about relationship building with the purpose of adding value to others) Athletics (and many other industries) are relatively small worlds, and you don't know who is connected to who. Those relationships can make/brake whether you get a job/opportunity. Where can people go to learn more about you, Tulane athletics, or anything else you have going on? ITT 004: How to Build a Massively Successful Blog, Get Published, and Live Your Passion with Jeff Goins

What do you want to do with your life? It’s not a rhetorical question. What do you want to do with your life? That's the difficult question a good friend of Jeff Goins asked him a few years ago; before Jeff had created Goinswriter.com, before Jeff landed a deal with a publisher, and before he truly started living his passion. The questions we ask ourselves (and get asked) matter.  The hard ones usually matter the most. Stop Hiding Jeff thought earnestly about the question and answered: "I want to be a writer." His friends response: “You don’t have to want to be a writer, you are a writer.  You just need to write.” The realization hit Jeff like a ton of bricks.  His friend was right.  All he had to do was start writing. So, with a clear purpose and direction, Jeff created his blog: Goinswriter.com. In his first year, he wrote over 300 blog posts (300!) for his website and another 100 (100!) guest blog posts for various other websites.  In less than two years, Jeff built his blog to a monthly readership of 100,000 people. So what happened that sparked his incredible success? In Jeff's own words: "I stopped hiding." About Jeff Goins Jeff is a blogger, speaker, published author, and, at his core, Jeff is a writer. His blog, Goinswriter.com is all about writing, putting your work out there, and telling better stories. Jeff's blog focuses on some essential questions Like: How do successful writers make a living? What does it really take to get published? Jeff's blog is an incredible resource for aspiring artists and writers alike. Jeff has been featured in Copyblogger, Problogger, and Zen Habits, among many other publications. You can find his most recent book Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into your Comfortable Life online and in bookstores everywhere. Awesome Quotes From the Interview: You don’t have to want to be a writer, you are a writer.  You just need to write. When I started creating my very best work, people started paying attention. Blogging literally is publishing. (tweet) Consistency is important, frequency is important, getting your name out there is important, but for me, it all comes down to creating your very best work. It’s really important to not assume my readers attention but to earn it. (tweet some more) Building [online] relationships is not the hard part.  The hard part is having something to say and saying it in a way that is going to earn people’s attention. (tweet) People don’t find their purpose until they learn to give their lives away. (tweet this) We follow writers and authors and communicators not for their subject, not for what they say, but for how they say it. I had believed this popular paradigm online which is that you pick one subject and you just write about it and become an expert about it.  I had started down that road but there was something about that that didn’t resonate with me.  And I think the reason was that all the writers and authors that I read and appreciated didn’t stick to one particular subject or even genre.  Maybe they started this way, but once they proved themselves they branched off into new areas. Great writers can write about any subject. (tweet tweet) Stop hiding. (definitely tweet this) The only, ONLY way that you get good, that you get REALLY good, is by creating something and sharing it with the world. In this conversation, Jeff Goins and I talk about: Why calling yourself a writer is essential to your success as an author/writer/artist Why trust and permission are ESSENTIAL for the success of anyone (yes, that includes you) What it takes to become a great writer The truth about publishing (it’s not easy) How to grow a blog to over 100,000 readers a month in one year Why you don’t have to compromise your art to make money The ridiculous amount of commitment and grit necessary to create a successful blog Why most people waste time trying to create a successful blog instead of doing this one simple (but tough) thing. Why you need to create your best work How blogging requires more than just the ability to write (you need to be able to do it all: create, edit, publish, etc.) Why trying to hold onto a certain quality of life will make you lose out on your best possible life What Taylor Swift can teach us about pacing our content and art Why you need to stop hiding and starting shipping! The power of soul searching and questioning yourself to find your passion Why you need to hustle if you want to make it Socialize: Reach out to Jeff and say hi!
