“He told me: ‘We are the same. We are the same.' Meaning, me and the terrorists who penetrated the kibbutz are the same. They received the mission to murder and to burn, and I received the mission to hold you as bargaining chips for the release of the Palestinian prisoners. And this was a very cruel sentence, because while we were in captivity . . . they could do anything to us.” Former Israeli hostage Shoshan Haran, abducted during the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023, shares her harrowing story of survival and resilience. Shoshan was abducted from her home in Kibbutz Be'eri alongside her family, including her son-in-law Tal Shoham, her daughter, and her young grandchildren. While she and the other women and children were released after 50 days in November 2023, Tal remained in Gaza for 505 days and was released in February 2025. Now, as she welcomes Tal home, Shoshan opens up about the unbearable anguish of captivity, the emotional toll of waiting, and the devastating losses her family has endured. She sheds light on the humanity that persisted even in the darkest moments and issues a powerful call for continued global action to free the 59 hostages who are still being held. Tal had been taken hostage from his home in Kibbutz Be'eri with his wife, his children, his wife's aunt, his 12-year-old niece, and his mother in law, Shoshan Haran. Shoshan returned home with the other women and children on November 26, 2023. She is with us now to talk about welcoming Tal home, the tremendous loss she and her family have suffered, and the endless fight to get the rest of the hostages home.  Shoshan, welcome to People of the Pod.  Shoshan Haran:   Thank you. Nice being here.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   Well, I'm glad that you are here to at least partially celebrate the return of your loved ones. It has been more than 500 days since that awful day in October. Can you take our listeners back a few days before the 7th, to October 4th: what were you doing that day? Shoshan Haran:   On October 4, we had a very big event of Women Making Peace in the Dead Sea, together with a sister movement, Women of the Sun. It's a Palestinian movement. Both women-led movements working for peace on both sides. And I went there with my sister Lilach and with the founder of this movement, Vivian Silver, who was my neighbor in Kibbutz Be'eri. And it was such an optimistic event, and heartwarming, we were there with thousands of women, some men also, and we were talking about the power of women to bring peace and how we should stop the bloodshed and how we should find a new way to live together in peace. That was on October 4.  Two days later, on October 6, we are getting ready for Simchat Torah, to celebrate with our family. We had the sukkah already since a week ago, and we invited my daughter, Adi, and her husband Tal and the little kids, Naveh, who was then eight years old, and Yahel (Yula), three years old, to join us for Simchat Torah. So we were cooking, getting ready for the holidays. It was a shabbat dinner, so cooking. And then we got a call from Avshal, Avshalom, he's my husband, his nickname is Avshal, and we got a call from his sister, Sharon, that wanted to join us for that evening with her daughter, Noam who was then 12 years old. And we celebrated together in the sukkah, having fun. The kids were playing all over. And then we went to sleep. We had kind of a loft above our house for hosting our guests, and that's where Tal and Adi and the kids stayed overnight. Sharon and her daughter stayed with us on the ground level, and we went to sleep. And then at 6:29am, we heard the red . . . color red is the code for attack. And we thought it is, I shouldn't say it, but the usual missile attack on us. So we went to the safe room. And then after a few minutes, we went out. My husband went up to the second floor to get Adi, Tal, and the kids down to be with us, and I started making hot chocolate for the grandkids. And then we got the warning on our–we have a community WhatsApp for alarms. And they told us that they suspect that some terrorists penetrated the kibbutz, and then we should go into the safe room. And a few minutes later, they confirmed that a terrorist attack was launched on the kibbutz. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Who was in that safe room with you? Shoshan Haran:   We were in the safe room, seven people. Tal, Adi, my daughter, the kids–my [2] grandkids, Sharon and Noam. Avshal stayed outside with a knife ready to protect his family, and also looking through the windows to understand what was going on. And then we started hearing shooting and grenades, and they got closer and closer to us. My cell phone was the only one that had reception inside the safe room. And after one hour and a half of terror, Tal texted my husband to join us in the safe room, because he understood that a knife is not gonna protect us, so there was no way. And so Avshal joined us, and Tal and him–we had a very large dinner table when we have guests, and the extensions were in the safe room, so very heavy pieces of wood. And they used it to protect the handle of the safe room door because there was no lock, but they were just pushing it against the safe room door. I heard them breaking into my neighbor's home. I heard a lot of glass and a lot of shooting and grenades. I didn't know what was happening there. And then they left.  And then they penetrated our house. They just broke into it. It's easy. It was full of windows that you could easily break into. And they started shouting at us: open the door, open the door. We did not. And then they had steel penetrating bullets that went through the safe room's iron door. And I even saw one bullet passing very close to my head. The movement of the bullet was a little bit slowed, so I could see it. And my husband shouted at me, just lie down, you know, because my head was a little bit upwards, looking at the cell phone and trying to call for help.  They couldn't break in the safe room door, and then they left, and we thought that maybe we were saved. But then after a few minutes, they brought a bulldozer, and they just cracked the safe room window. And the safe room window is composed of two steel parts that should be connected. But with the bulldozer, they were able to dismantle the window and create a crack.  And then we had a few seconds to decide to surrender or not. And then my husband and Tal decided to surrender. We were under the bed, so we didn't see much, but they understood that the crack will allow the terrorists to throw grenades into the room. So they decided to surrender.  And then the terrorist opened the window so we stopped resisting. They opened the window, and then my husband and Tal went out first, and that was the last glance that I had of my husband. And it took us a while, because we were under the bed, and we were three women and three little kids. So we went out of the room. They grabbed us through the window. And when my daughter was out, she saw her kids. They took her kids separately. And she just shouted at them, mother, kid, mother, kids. And she, she just kidnapped. She grabbed them from the terrorist. She's a real hero, my daughter.  And then they pushed us with a gun pointed at us. And when we were out of the safe room, which I saw already, six or seven members of the kibbutz were already murdered and were lying near our home, and they were pushing us towards the fence around the kibbutz, which they already destroyed.  And one of them that looks really lunatic, he handcuffed me with my hands behind my back, and they just pushed us into the car that they brought from Gaza and drove towards the Gaza Strip. We didn't see any IDF soldiers. The border was completely abolished. There was no border. We didn't see any Air Force. We saw nothing. It was just driving through the open fields into the Gaza Strip.  We were sitting in the back seat of the car. I had Naveh, my grandson, on my lap. Adi was holding Yula, and Sharon was holding her daughter, Noam. And the two terrorists were sitting in front. And when we crossed the border into Gaza–the theoretical border, there was nothing there–one of the terrorists told us, welcome to Gaza. And I said, thank you. And then we just entered into Gaza.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   You said that was your last glance of Avshal when he climbed out the window. Shoshan Haran:   So we were in captivity for 50 days, and during these horrible days, I was almost sure that both Tal and Avshal were hostages in Gaza, because they were kidnapped a few minutes before us, and I understood that the goal of the terrorists was to have hostages. And so I was very confident, I should say, that both of them are hostages in Gaza. And I knew, I knew by intuition, that Israel will demand to release women and children first. I just knew it.  And I told Adi and Sharon all the time. I said, we need to survive. Every day that we survive will get us closer to our release, because I knew that the terrorists see us as bargain chips to get their prisoners released. So I said our mission is just to survive. I need to keep my family. I need to survive.  And I thought that Tal and Avshal are also hostages, and I learned about the fact that they murdered my husband on October 7, only after I was released and I met my daughter and my son, and they had to tell me the horrible truth that he was murdered, but not only him. My sister was murdered, my little sister, my younger sister. Her husband, his caregiver.  102 people from my kibbutz, from the little community that we know, every one were murdered on October 7. Manya Brachear Pashman:   This was your sister, Lilach, who had been at the event on October 4 with you. Yes?  Shoshan Haran:   Yes, yes. Manya Brachear Pashman:   I am so sorry. May all of those memories be a blessing, every one of them in the kibbutz.  Did you stay with your daughter and grandchildren in Gaza the entire time? Or were you separated?  Shoshan Haran:   No, we were together, luckily. We were handed over by the kidnappers to what I used to term as guards in Gaza. And I use the term guards because we wanted the children to live in the belief that these people are guarding us, so we didn't call them terrorists, not even between ourselves. We call them guards.  We were moved from one house to another. So we were not in the tunnels. We were in top Hamas leaders' houses. What they did in all of these houses, they created a separate room for us, where we did not see the family of the Hamas leader, but we heard the voices. We heard the voices of the commander. We heard the voices of his wife and the children. So it was like a provisoric arrangement. And the guards were always in between us and the family. I mean, we didn't see the family, but we heard them. And the guards were the ones who brought us food and they were kind of in between.  We had an event in the second house that we stayed. We had an event of knock on the roof. Knock on the roof is a term that the IDF is using when the Air Force is aiming to hit a specific house without harming the people who live inside the house.  One time it was supposed to be two blocks away from us, so the terrorists, they know exactly the address, and they told us to get away, just to stay away from the window. So if the window is, if the glass is breaking, we will not be wounded. The second time, it was very close to where we stayed, maybe even the place we stayed, specifically so they evacuated us and the family of the Hamas terrorist who was holding us. We were evacuated to the street, and then we were taken to another house. And eventually we were taken to a fourth house, where we stayed 43 days. And in that house, the Hamas person who joined us knew English. So I started to talk. Before that the guards or the captors, didn't speak any English. They knew some very basic words, like bomb, far, go, come. You know, simple words. But in the fourth house that we stayed 43 days, the Hamas terrorist knew quite good English.  Manya Brachear Pashman: Did you seize on that and try to have conversations with your captors? We had lots of conversations and talks. I'm a very passionate reader, so I read a lot of books, including Holocaust survivors' books. I used a lot of the wisdom on how to survive when I was in Gaza. So the first thing I knew: that I should not show any weakness. I looked in their eyes, I talked straight forward, I didn't show any panic or hysterical or crying or stuff like that.  The other thing is, I knew I had to keep hope and be determined that we will be released. So that was very important, and that gave us strength. And also I counted the days. I knew the day of the week. And I knew the date. And to eat when you can. To sleep when you can. So to be very determined and very focused on the present. You don't have the capacity to think about the past or the future, you just focus on survival every second, every minute, every hour, how to protect your family and how to create some kind of a relationship with your captors. So they will get to know us, and this will give some some layer of protection. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Did you feel like you successfully fostered a relationship?   Shoshan Haran:   Yeah, it's a very tricky situation. So on one hand, I used to thank–his mother was cooking, was providing the food. We never saw her, but we heard her voice. We heard the babies on the other side of the apartment, but there was no eye contact. But when I knew that she was the one who is preparing food for us and for the captors and for her family. So every time that this guy, her son, brought us the food, I said, I want you to thank your mother. And I mentioned a few times that I appreciate the fact that they are guarding us and they are providing us the food, although it was very minimal, but still. And after a few days, we started to talk about life. I know about their salaries. I know their problems. I know how they get married or why they're not married yet.  I know about their mission. Their mission is very clear. They want to destroy Israel. It's a jihadistic mission. It's very clear. They talk about it very openly. And actually, they tried to convince us to leave Israel. He was saying, why don't you go back to Europe or go to Florida. I don't know for some reason, Florida is like, simple for them, for the Jewish community in the US. And he said, next time we're going to come harder on Israel, and I'm not sure that you'll have such a nice team to take care of you, so I advise you go, leave Israel.  And at a certain point he said, he asked me, if you go back to Israel, will you go back to the kibbutz? So said to him, I don't want to hear the word if. When we go back to Israel. And regarding the kibbutz, I said, it's a very good question, but I never gave him an answer. I knew what he wanted to hear. They were in a state of mind that, on one hand, you do create human interactions. And they played with the children. The children were so sweet, and they started to play. His family had the same age kids at the other side of the house, so there were human interactions, but it was very clear that their mission is to keep us as bargaining chips. And at one point after I felt more, I don't know, relaxed with the interaction with him, because all my talks were with this specific guy, because he was the only one who talked English. I said, you know, I am very, I don't know which expression I said, but I'm very angry about the people I saw who penetrated the kibbutz and murdered my my friends. And I saw the house of my sister was on fire. It was already bombed. You know, with, I don't know what, with whatever. Actually, I gave her and her husband like, 1% chances to be alive. What I saw in the house was, it would require a miracle for them to survive. So I told him that I'm angry at the people who penetrated the kibbutz and did these horrible things, but I do thank him and the guards and his family, to protect us and to feed us. Manya Brachear Pashman: Did you get any glimmer of remorse or compassion or empathy from them at that point? Shoshan Haran: He told me: We are the same. We are the same, meaning me and the terrorists who penetrated the kibbutz are the same. They received the mission to murder and to burn, and I received the mission to hold you as bargaining chips for the release of the Palestinian prisoners. And this was a very cruel sentence, because while we were in captivity, we were fully dependent on every expression of their faces, they could do anything to us.  So my mind couldn't handle this sentence, and I kind of buried it, I just put it aside. I didn't want to think about it, because it was so cruel. But I was sure that if anybody tried to rescue us, they will murder us. I was sure, I was not confused in that sense. I knew that they use us as assets. They see us as assets. And if they will feel that somebody is trying to rescue us by force, then they will kill us. And going to the situation now, you know that Tal, my son in law, Tal Shoham, was released two weeks ago. And actually it's the first time I started to breathe after a year and some months of fighting for his life, and, you know, taking care of helping my daughter and the grandkids and everybody, but we need To remember there are 59 more hostages in Gaza. And when we must keep on the fight. We must not give up. Manya Brachear Pashman:   A religion reporting colleague of mine, Dave Schechter in Atlanta, is a cousin of yours. When Tal was released, he wrote about how the extended family all around the world fought for and celebrated his release. Were you able to feel that love or sense that family energy? Shoshan Haran:   When I was a hostage in Gaza, I knew that my family and friends in Israel will not stay quiet, just because I know them. But as I said before, most of the time you don't think of anything else besides what's going on in your cell. Actually, I I looked at our situation as if we are astronauts in a hostile world, but unfortunately with terrorists pointing guns at our heads inside the satellite.  So when I was in Gaza, I thought about the fact that my family and friends will not stay quiet and will fight, but only on the way to Gaza. Once I was there, the focus is survival, focus. You just don't have any capacity to think of the past or the future or on anything that is beyond here and now. After I returned, first of all, Yuval, my son, told me that he organized a march from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem with 50,000 people when we were in captivity. And Shaked, my daughter, she was then nine months pregnant, and she flew to the US with AJC, by the way. Without insurance. She was nine months pregnant, no insurance company would cover her flight, but she still went, and she was all over. And when they told me, I suddenly felt the connection.  And of course, I mean, I got, while I was there, I got millions of emails and, well, WhatsApp I didn't have, because my phone was stolen, but emails from all over the world, including from Africa, the places that my my NGO is working with smaller farmers, Fair Planet, we call it. Now I think it's a bit naive name, but still.  Manya Brachear Pashman: And really the Jewish people as a collective have come together at this moment in history. Were you able to feel that sense of community in your circumstance? Or if not, can you feel it now that Tal is home and you can, as you just said, breathe? Shoshan Haran:   10 days after I was released on 26 of November, 50 days after we were taken, I came to the US and AJC people helped us get meetings with congressmen and Senate members. They took us all over. I was just in the meetings. But, you know, in the corridors of the Senate, at the corridors of the Congress and in and out with meetings. And I really, really, really appreciate not only this help, but this was my personal feeling. I mean, we just landed. I was still half in Gaza and half in my freedom. And here I am in the US, talking to decision makers and influencers, and this was done with the help of you guys, so I think it's a nice opportunity to thank you. Thank you for all the help that you are doing since then. I know it started very early on.  Actually, my daughter, my younger daughter, Shaked, came to the US to meet you guys and to meet Congressmen a few days after I was kidnapped. So, when I was in Gaza, actually.  So I think, the way I see it, I always knew the importance of the Jewish people all over the world, and of course, the importance of Israel being an independent Jewish democratic country, the importance of Israel to the Jews in the world, and the importance of the Jews in the world for Israel. I knew it, but the strength of these connections was much more evident after this horrific October 7 attack. So I felt that the Jewish world is is not only with us, but on a very practical level with us, and using all the network and all the professionals in Washington, in New York, I was invited to synagogues a few times, to big synagogues in Manhattan, what I felt is that a lot of Jewish people abroad that were not so much active in their connection to Israel understood the importance of Israel to them. And the urgency to work together on this crisis. And I think this will not go away. That's my feeling.  But now we need to focus on the 59 hostages. I know the feeling I had until two weeks ago. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't smile. I mean, it's your you look at the news and you get heart attacks every single news piece, and you just cannot breathe, and the families of these 59 hostages are still in this situation, we are not allowed to forget and let go. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Thank you for expressing your gratitude. And I must echo that gratitude to you for sharing that story and reliving all of that trauma. I'm sorry that you had to remember some of those horrible moments, though I do think that they are illuminating for those who just simply can't grasp what your family went through.  You did not see Tal again until he returned to Israel. Is that correct?  Shoshan Haran:   Yes. Well, about my husband, I heard only when I returned. But there were evidence from October 7 that Tal was taken alive. People saw him in Gaza. So we knew that he was taken. We were just hoping and praying that none of the horrible things that could happen while you are in captivity will not happen to him. He had a horrible time, but it was released, and my daughter, Adi, his wife, told me it's either zero or one. Either you get your husband, your loved ones back alive, and you can rebuild your future and unite your family, or it's a zero.  And for the 59 hostages who are still in Gaza, we need to do anything that we can keep keep the pressure, keep the energy, keep the fight. If you care about the civilian Palestinians in Gaza, like I do–that all my life, I was working for peace–the only thing you need to focus on is releasing the hostages. Because the hostages, the fact that the Hamas terrorists are still keeping them there, is a devastating fact for the Palestinians, because the Hamas, they don't care about their own people.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   Is it too soon to ask, once all the hostages return and they will, what comes next? Is there a movement already afoot to make sure Israel and others never forget what happened on October 7? Or is it too soon to ask that question?  Shoshan Haran:   I think once all the hostages are back, there will be as we will need, and also the Jewish people in the world will need to cheshbon nefesh (accounting of the soul). I don't know how to say it in English. To rethink and reconsider our views and our actions looking forward. I think we cannot be naive anymore and say to ourselves, you know that just saying that they want to kill us all, but they don't really mean it, and they will not be, they will not dare to do it and so and so forth. I think now we need to look at the facts as they are and recalculate our stance, our thoughts.  I think, first of all, we need to follow the money. Because one thing I can tell you, without funding, Hamas would never get to this stage, and neither Iran or the Houthis or Hezbollah, there are forces in the world who are supporting financially, the organizations or the countries who declare that they want to destroy and abolish Israel. We need to follow the money. We need to be smart. That's one. The other, and that's a big question. I'm just putting it on the table, but it's a big question how to do it, but this, we must do it. And the other thing is, the key for mutual existence is education. And what I learned recently, for example, is that the Palestinian Authority, or the people in Gaza, they do not teach about the Holocaust. They do not know about the Holocaust. The people that my captors, they were 24, 25, and 31 and then the commander was 40. Looking at the dates of the decision not to teach about the Holocaust, I'm sure they had no understanding why we are here. They think that we just came here like a colonialist or, you know, and then, if they will give us enough trouble, we will go away.  But we're not going to go away. We are staying, and until they change their mission to destroy us. We need to be stronger and smarter than them. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Shoshan, thank you so much for being with us, for sharing your story, and for giving us hope, sharing your hope, and then giving us hope that the hostages are all coming home, and that there is a future for Israel. Shoshan Haran:   There is a future for Israel. This, I'm sure, yes, but we need the Jewish people with us, and we need to work together. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Thank you so much. Shoshan Haran:   Thank you. Thank you. And regards to my friends at AJC. Manya Brachear Pashman:   If you missed last week's episode, be sure to tune in for my conversation with two scientists at MIT who have created a foundation to ensure Israeli scholars and their American colleagues can collaborate freely, and foster research and innovation that benefits all of humanity.

How well do we really know those who are closest to us? That's the question that is behind ‘The Wolf Hunt', a new novel by Israeli author Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. She's my guest on this very special episode. In a first for the show, I'm interviewing the author of a piece of fiction. Ayelet isn't just a writer. She's also a clinical psychologist, which informs both her content and the way in which she writes her narratives. The Wolf Hunt is the story of a mother who begins to suspect her teenage son of committing a terrible crime. Lilach, the main protagonist, seems to have it all: a beautiful home in the heart of Silicon Valley, a community of other Israeli immigrants, a happy marriage and a close relationship with her teenage son, Adam. But when a local synagogue is brutally attacked, her shy, reclusive son is compelled to join a self-defence class taught by a former Israeli Special Forces officer. Then, a Black teenager dies at a house party, and rumours begin to circulate that Adam and his new friends might have been involved. As scrutiny begins to invade Lilach's peaceful home and her family's stability is threatened, will her own fears be the greatest danger of all? It's a fascinating and engaging storyline. And, as you'll hear, it was inspired by a simple question Ayelet asked herself when she was dropping her daughter off at school. In our discussion, we explore: Ayelet's journey as a writer and what inspires her to write;the psychological themes that underpin her work and how her personal experiences, both as a psychologist but also as a mother and individual, shape her narratives; The particular experiences and stories she's been told that led to The Wolf Hunt; How literature serves as a universal mirror reflecting our experiences and biasesAnd so much more. For more on The Wolf Hunt, visit https://pushkinpress.com/books/the-wolf-hunt/.It's available in all major bookstores. To read articles she's written for Time magazine: https://time.com/author/ayelet-gundar-goshen-2/Since this is the first fiction writer I've had on the show, let me know what you think about the idea of doing more of this type of interview. If you like it, should it be part of the main show or a separate one? If you don't, why not!

Tom Poland 00:55 Well, folks, if you haven't heard Lilach, she's actually been listed in Forbes as one of the top 20 Women Social Media Power Influencers, which is pretty freakin' incredible! When you think of all the social influencers, and our guest today is one of the top 20. She was crowned the Social Influencer of Europe by Oracle, the software company, some pretty heavy hitters. She is a recipient of a Global Women Champions Award for her outstanding contribution and leadership in business. So, a real privilege to have you here today. Lilach, thank you for joining us. The title of our little interview today is, “How to- dramatic pause- Quadruple Your Sales Without Spending Any Money on Ads”. Cool. Let's rock and roll! Our seven minutes start now. Who is your ideal client, Lilach? Lilach Bullock 01:48 For my ideal clients are B2B entrepreneurs, start-ups, SMEs, B2B market coaches, consultants. People who are looking to grow and scale their businesses, basically. Tom Poland 02:02 Perfect! And question two, six and a half minutes left, how would you define the problem that you solve? Lilach Bullock 02:08 There's lots of different problems that entrepreneurs face. Primarily, it's how can they charge what they're worth and more? How can they create consistent leads? How can they then convert and close them into sales? How can they, simple things, like knowing how much money they're making next month? Being able to forecast, being able to juggle the entrepreneurial journey, the mindset challenges, being the most productive, efficient and effective with their time, and making the right decisions and prioritizing, being totally focused, taking massive action, consistent action and the right actions, which are going to help them move the goals closer, move the needle closer to the goals that they want to achieve. Tom Poland 02:53 There's a few challenges in there. So, what would you say is, this is question three, what would you say are some of the typical symptoms that your ideal clients, once they become your client, they told you that they were suffering from before they were your clients? Five and a half minutes left. Lilach Bullock 03:08 So, it's very- I love this question because, often, what people think is the problem. It isn't a problem when you dig deeper into it. So, take, for example, people who are afraid to put their prices up, or just charge what they know their worth. And there's two parts to this problem. One is they're basing their pricing on what they see around them. And we all know that the stats are that 97% of entrepreneurs are not successful. So, they're basing this pricing model, plucking things out in the air, basing it on 97% of other people who also have no idea what they're doing, and probably not taking it very well. So that's one part of the problem. The other part of the problem is total fear, because they don't have enough leads coming to them. They have a lead generation problem. They think they have a pricing problem. They think that they're not charging enough, but actually they have a lead generation problem. They're simply not generating enough leads consistently so that they can say no to people, so that they can pick and choose who they want to work with. And so that they can forecast and see how much money they're making next month, etc. So, they work from fear, panic, and just not enough knowledge. And we all know that knowledge is power. Tom Poland 04:21 So, thank you for that. Question four, just over four minutes left. We're talking about growth orientated individuals here that don't have enough clients coming in. They probably aren't charging what they're worth based out of fear, but they're still going to try stuff. So, what would you say are some of the most common mistakes that these entrepreneurs are making before they find your solution? Lilach Bullock 04:42 I think the most common mistakes, and this is often perpetuated by the industry online, is how easy everything is. The reality is, is that we're living in a very saturated competitive marketplace. And most people get bored too quickly. They just don't realize the amount of huge action which is required, and the consistency involved in that. And they say, “Well, no one's listening.” So, there's just so many challenges. And I feel for entrepreneurs starting out today because, you know, I've been doing this for nearly 18 years. So, for me, I already have a margin. I already have a big idea. So, for me, if I post something out automatically, it's going to generate reach. But when you're starting out or your reach is small, or if you've had to pivot, which many of us have had to during Corona, then your message, you know, you could have the best message in the world, but it simply won't be getting heard as much as somebody else who's got a really large network. Tom Poland 05:44 Wow, thank you for that. So, question five, three minutes left, what would you say is one, a top tip, a valuable free action that someone could take that's going to shift them closer towards being able to quadruple their income without spending money on advertisements? Lilach Bullock 05:59 So yeah, again, love these questions. I think, ultimately, is to do what everybody else isn't doing. Because as I said earlier, the market is so saturated. It's so competitive. Everyone's saying the same stuff. Nobody's being bold enough to have a unique and strong voice. Be controversial. Be raw. Be honest. Be transparent. The key here is to be memorable and visible. And when you get those two combinations combined with consistency, that's a winning formula. Tom Poland 06:30 Perfect! Thank you for that. Two minutes left, question six, one valuable free resource. Where can we direct folks to that's going to help them more with this problem? Lilach Bullock 06:40 Yeah, sure. So, I have an eBook. I say it's an eBook. It's really a very short, quick guide, because I know that people have a short attention span on how to overcome eight money blocks. And there's the most eight common blocks there and you can download it, overcome your money blocks and charge what you're worth and beyond. Tom Poland 07:00 So that's at www., L-I-L-A-C-H, Bullock, B-U, double L, O-C-K.com/8, and that's the number eight, -money-blocks. It'll be under the video, if you're watching the video. But if you haven't, then go get it. L-I- L-A-C-H, bullock.com/8, that's number eight, -money-blocks. Last question, what's the one question I should have asked you, but didn't? And we've got a full 60 seconds to answer. Lilach Bullock 07:30 So, I think we touched on it earlier about people not having the right expectations about business. And they think it's so easy and then they get bored because it's taking too long. Everyone asked me what is the top lead generation tactic you should be doing? And the truth is that every single lead generation tactic works– every single thing! Whether that's sending messages, whether it's doing cold email outreach, or LinkedIn outreach, or ads or whatever it is that you're doing, networking, webinars. The key is to do it consistently. And to take massive, massive action. I really can't emphasize this enough. When people say things aren't working, reality is, is that they need to do it more and they need to do it better and stronger. Also, don't be afraid to ask. People are so nervous to ask for a sale. It's like we're all here to sell. What's the point in networking? Everyone's here to sell. Just ask. Don't be afraid. Tom Poland 08:29 Thanks so much for your time and your insights. Cheers! Episode 70: Auditory Processing Disorder With Guest Dr. Lilach Saperstein In this episode, we discuss the ins and outs of auditory processing disorder (APD). Guest Dr. Lilach Saperstein noted that APD occurs when the brain can’t properly pick out what is important to hear vs what is noise. APD is more likely to occur in children that have other disorders, such as ADHD or autism, although another possible contributing factor is chronic ear infections between 0-3 years of age. Diagnosis is typically only made starting at age 7, but can be screened starting at age 5.   APD presents differently in each child. Common signs include inattention, not answering to their name, constantly saying “what,” “I didn’t hear you,” “did you call me?,” needing to repeat things to the child, the child not being engaged to sounds around them when it is noisy or busy but attends when it is quiet, and the child experiencing frustration in communicating. Before being diagnosed with APD, one must have had ruled out hearing difficulties and ADHD. It is strongly recommended that a child also have a psychoeducational evaluation, speech and language evaluation, and a medical checkup, and the audiologist will also gather information from the teacher and parent. Although only audiologists can diagnose APD, speech therapists most typically do the treatment. Dr. Saperstein provided the following tips for managing APD: Tips: Visual cues along with auditory cues             Visual schedules for routines             One direction at a time             Repeat information back verbatim             FM system in the classroom (mic to kid’s ear)             Learning an instrument             Preferential seating near front of the room, near the teacher             Pre-teaching key words of the lesson             Chunking information             Play Simon says (start slow, then speed up instructions)             Play chicken dance that gets faster and faster             Copy the beat             Written communication at school and work             Accommodations in the office             Listening to audio books and podcasts (slow down or speed up playback speed)         Guest Links: All About Audiology All About Audiology Guide Instagram Facebook Khan Academy Kids Teachers Pay Teachers   Email us if you have any questions or ideas! Show notes can be found at tashcorbin.com/239 Today we have a fantastic listener question in relation to growing and converting your podcast audience. If you've been thinking about having a podcast or you already have one, this is going to be a great episode for you. Today's listener question comes in from Lilach Saperstein from All About Audiology. You can find out more about her business at allaboutaudiology.com or on Instagram at @allaboutaudiologypodcast. Lilach'a question is: "Hi Tash! My podcast has several different listener segments (parents of children with hearing loss, audiologists and related professionals, and students). Episodes include and address different topics, I bring on varied guests, and provide value to all these different kinds of listeners. Do you have any advice on growing the listenership further, and converting listeners to clients? It has been a steady growth and a wonderful journey of connecting with people around the world, primarily on Instagram. For some context, I have 45 episodes with nearly 20,000 total downloads and over 1000 followers on Instagram. Thanks!" First and foremost, I want to say an epic congratulations for your consistency as well as growing your listenership already with your podcast. For so many people, their podcast has the first 12 episodes and then it just disappears, so being able to maintain your listenership as well as your consistency with getting your podcast out there is absolutely amazing. This question really comes down to a matter of two particular issues: 1. Reach - How do you grow the reach of your existing podcast? 2. Conversion - How do you improve the conversion from a listener into a paying client? I'm going to cover those two issues separately in this Q&A episode. First, let's talk about reach. I want to answer this question not just about your specific situation, but also for anyone who has a podcast. 1. Consistency Being consistent and predictable, and having episodes come out on the same day every single week is a really big driver of listenership of a podcast. If people can't accurately predict when that podcast episode is going to come out, it can really impact on your listenership. When you have over 30 days without a new podcast episode, that can mean that some people who have been subscribed will automatically either be unsubscribed or asked if they still want to commit to that subscription. You might then find that your automatic downloads, whenever you release a new podcast to your subscribers, will significantly drop because you've had too much of a gap in those podcast episodes coming out. I've been through this and I've done it several times in my journey as a podcaster, where I've struggled with that consistency and ended up having to rebuild my listenership which is a really big struggle. Keep that consistency up if you want to make sure that you're consistently scaling the reach of your podcast. 2. Ensure that as many episodes as possible are relevant to your listeners This one is probably where you're going to have some struggles when you have a diverse range of listener segments. Thankfully, you have a consistent topic and that topic can be very interesting and relevant to all of your listener segments if it's handled effectively. Say you've got some episodes that are specifically targeted towards: Parents of children with hearing loss Audiologists Professionals Students Related professions If you're separating those episodes out and making those episodes not relevant to the other listeners, more often than not, then that may impact on your reach and your listenership. We want to make sure as much as possible that your episodes have relevance for all of your audience segments, and where they don't have relevance for other audience segments, that you're really upfront about that early on in the podcast episode so that you're not wasting anyone's time. That's going to be a really big one. If someone's subscribed to your podcast or they've stumbled across it and have listened to three or four episodes, but two of them weren't really relevant to them and it took 10 to 15 minutes of listening before they worked out it wasn't relevant to them, then of course, that's going to really hurt in terms of your reach. People will listen less and less because they haven't found anything that's relevant to them. Be upfront at the start of the episode about what the topic is, and if it's not necessarily relevant to all audience members, letting them know who it is relevant for can actually be really helpful. Even though people may not listen to that episode, you have demonstrated that you value their time and they're more likely to move on to other episodes that are relevant to them. They are some of the core base-level things when it comes to podcasting and increasing your reach of that podcast. 3. Distribution This is what's going to significantly impact your reach, as well and growing your listenership. You want to make sure that you take responsibility for distributing your podcast. It's wonderful that those podcast platforms: Are easily searchable Have suggestions and recommendations that mean you'll get other listeners that are suggested by the platform Make it easy for people to stumble across you Improve the likelihood that people are going to hear all of your episodes if they subscribe (so make sure that encourage people to subscribe when you do podcast episodes) But you also need to take responsibility for distribution. Have a think about ways that you can ensure that every episode of your podcast is distributed as far and wide as possible to relevant audiences. For example, if you do an email newsletter consistently, you want to make sure that you're highlighting certain podcast episodes or the latest podcast episode. On your social media channels, especially on Instagram, you want to make it easy for people to know that you have a podcast and how they can get to that podcast. Not just saying that you have a podcast generally, but directing them to a specific podcast episode. When you talk about your podcast episodes, you want to make sure that you're very specific about the value proposition of that podcast episode and who it's for. Being active on Instagram is a great platform for you to make the most of the opportunity that comes with Instagram stories. Whenever a new episode is available on your podcast, doing Instagram stories to talk about the topic, get people interested in it, and then let them know there's a podcast episode that dives into it further, is going to be really helpful for growing listenership. Don't forget to use old episodes in this same way. If you've got a particular episode that's done very well, make sure that you put it in your social media schedule to consistently bring people back to it because clearly it's something that people have found valuable. Take responsibility for distribution and re-distribution of podcast episodes because you will see that improves not only your listenership, but also your subscriber rates really quickly. Other things to remember: You can also use things like having guests (which you already do), as well as guesting on other people's platforms as a way to grow your listenership with relevant audiences. You've got ads that you can use as well - using engagement ads on posts where you're talking about your podcast episodes or using conversion ads where you have podcast episodes that have show notes with a freebie that people can sign up to. There are some really fun ways that you can use ads to expand your listenership, especially if you're using lookalike audiences or your warmest audiences on social media. They are some ways that you can grow the reach of your podcast. What I would suggest is to not try 12 things all at once. Just pick one strategy that you're going to focus on, give it three to four weeks, see how it goes in terms of improving your regular download rates for your episodes, and then decide if you're going to keep doing that, or if you're going to let go of it and try something else. If you decide to keep it, systemise that and get it working at scale before you start bringing in other strategies. Too often I see people with podcasts who try a distribution strategy and it works, so then they add another distribution strategy which also works, so then they add another one and so on... But they've never really systemised, outsourced, or scaled that startegy, so what ends up happening is every time they have a podcast episode to release, they end up needing to do 8 to 12 hours of time in actually doing all that distribution, and that's not scalable for you. We want to make sure that we do it at scale in a systemised way. Let's now talk about conversion. 1. Tell people how to take that next step Too often, I listen to podcast episodes where it's a really fascinating subject and I absolutely love it, but then the call to action is just to go and check out a random freebies page (or there's no call to action whatsoever). There's no information on how I can find out more or discuss that with you if this is something I want to work on, or even a way to know how I might be able to work with you. Make sure on your podcast episodes that you have a clear call to action for anyone who's listening along, finds it fascinating and wants to know how they can dive in further. 2. Make sure you're using your podcast to grow and nurture your email list consistently For most people, the conversion doesn't come straight from podcasts into paying you - although that is something that can happen, so make sure you give people that option. Generally, it's going to be a conversion from podcast onto your mailing list, mailing list into a lead magnet, and lead magnet into buying something from you. For my Take Off program for example, I know what the most common journey from podcast to Take Off is. Let's say I do a podcast episode on niching, and then I'll have my Nail Your Niche freebie as the call to action on that podcast. They'll jump into that Nail Your Niche freebie, go through the email sequence - nurturing and getting my regular newsletters - and then when I launch the Take Off program the next time, they'll jump into the webinar or the challenge for that launch, and then they'll convert there in a live lead magnet for a that particular launch. You want to make sure that you are growing that email list, and you're consistently nurturing them. Then you can let your email list know how they can dive deeper with you, work with you, or jump into a launch if you've got a product or service that you are launching. The other thing I want to quickly touch on here in relation to conversion is the audience belief system that we have that if we can just get our stuff in front of a bigger audience, then it will automatically mean that we are going to get better results and sales in our business. That's actually not accurate. How many people (I've definitely had this thought) reading along have had the thought that if you could just get one podcast episode to go viral and have 200,000 people listen to it, then everything will be okay and your business will grow and you'll definitely make sales? Or if only you could just get that one post on social media to be shared by someone famous, then everything would be okay? Often, when that huge leap in audience does happen, it doesn't translate into more sales, because you haven't identified and taken responsibility for your customer journey - not just through the process of hearing about you and then buying from you in one jump, but also through that nurturing process. Have you got a really clear nurturing process that people go through that you know works to convert people into paying clients with you? And if you don't, that is something we want to be prioritising so that we can take care of that and make sure the podcast is doing its job. At the end of the day, the job of your podcast is to grow your reach and audience, but also bring them in on that customer journey. Thank you so much for this question Lilach, I hope that you have found my answer helpful. As I said earlier, I didn't give you all of these strategies to go and try all of them at once. I would recommend looking at: What is one way that you can grow your reach? What is one way that you can grow your conversion? Focus on those for a consistent period of time and see how they work, and then make a decision about whether you want to stop it or continue it, and whether you're going to bring other strategies into play. The final note that I want to say about any podcast or any type of strategy in terms of whether it's going to work and whether it's going to reach the right people and convert them into clients, is to make sure that you are really clear on your niche, your value proposition and messaging, and your offer. Those are the foundations when it comes to any kind of business and marketing strategy. Very often we can get caught up in how we can get better reach, thinking that that is what is going to grow our business and get those results. You need to have confidence and clarity on these three core foundations: Niche Value proposition for people and the messaging that expresses that value proposition Offer that you know your audience really loves and that they get the outcome they're looking for from If you don't, then all of the surface level activities that you do in order to grow your audience, grow the reach of your podcasts and get more listeners, is not necessarily going to result in business growth. We just want to make sure we've got all of those foundations clear. If that is something you would like to work on - getting that niche, the value proposition and your offer clear - I'd love to also invite you to come and check out my new Nail Your Niche training. It is a prerecorded training that you can do at your leisure (and you can also listen to it on double-time so you can get through it nice and quickly). This will help you look at those foundations of your business and just make sure that you're very clear on, for you Lilach, each niche that you're focusing on, what the value proposition is for them, and then what the offer is that that person is actually looking for and how you express and articulate that in a way that has them saying, 'Yes! That's exactly what I need, how do I sign up?' If you want to check that out, you can find it here: tashcorbin.com/niche If you have found this episode of the podcast particularly helpful and you'd like to continue the conversation, come on over to the Heart-Centred Soul-Driven Entrepreneurs Facebook group, use #podcastaha and let me know you've been listening along to episode number 239. I'd love to hear from you if you are a podcaster or you've been thinking about podcasting: Which area are you going to be focusing on more consistently - rates or conversion? What strategy are you going to be trying out? What are any follow-up questions or lightbulb moments you'd like to share? Do you have a question you'd like me to answer here on the podcast? Go to tashcorbin.com/question, pop your question in there and I will answer your question as well as give you a shoutout and a link back to your channels. The Vast Diversity of Parasite Cell Biology: Dr. Lilach Sheiner Talks Variety and Utility

Because the parasites that cause toxoplasmosis and malaria are somewhat similar and are accessible, they offer researchers important information. Dr. Sheinber explains her work by discussing  why the untapped variety of parasite cell biology might offer further understanding, how different types of mitochondria—human versus parasite—keep cells alive in very different ways and why that's important, and how parasites have maneuvers that could improve medicine, such as the toxoplasmosis  parasites' ability to cross the barrier between blood and brain.  Senior lecturer at the Royalty Society of Edenborough, research fellow in parasitology, and leading expert in eukaryotic cell biology, Dr. Lilack Sheiner runs a lab that closely studies the parasites responsible for toxoplasmosis and malaria. This close examination of parasite cell biology has revealed a better understanding of how they function and how we might better prevent disease caused by these parasites. Her incentives for this study is twofold: the diversity in parasite cell biology itself is an important part of understanding organisms in the larger picture of biology. Additionally, because parasites are responsible for some human diseases, a better understanding of parasite cell biology may lead to disease prevention. She describes numerous examples that reveal this diversity and explains how useful the knowledge is in turn. For example, because mitochondria have different mechanisms for different organisms, doctors can implement a drug that kills the malarial parasite by mitochondrial harm while leaving the human cell alive. Dr. Sheiner also talks about abilities parasites have that may help us create new drugs. For example, she describes scientists studying how the toxoplasmosis parasite is able to do something scientists haven't been able to implement in drugs: crossing the blood/brain barrier. If scientists could create drugs that can do this, they might make headway into treating many neurological conditions. Therefore, if researchers learn more about this parasite's ability, they may discover a drug-delivery technology.
