This week on The Learning Curve, co-hosts U-Arkansas Prof. Albert Cheng and Meredith Coolidge of DFER - MA interview James Conway, a World History and Psychology teacher at Revere High School, and Ela Gardiner, a freshman at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Wellesley High School alumna. Conway discusses the 1993 Massachusetts Education Reform Act (MERA) and its role in establishing a progressive state funding formula, high-stakes testing like MCAS, and rigorous curriculum standards. He highlights the national and international successes of Massachusetts students, particularly through NAEP, TIMSS, and PISA assessments, and emphasizes MCAS as a key tool for improving educational equity. Mr. Conway also reflects on the importance of MCAS for instruction and accountability, and the negative implications of eliminating it as a high-stakes test. Ms. Gardiner discusses her personal experiences with the Massachusetts curriculum standards and MCAS testing. She shares how the rigorous academic expectations helped prepare her for college and how her experience compares to peers from other states and countries. Gardiner also addresses the critics' questionable concerns about MCAS, explaining how her high school's curriculum aligned with the standards and MCAS effectively prepared her for both state and national tests. Finally, she speaks on the potential academic consequences for future students if MCAS is removed as a graduation requirement, stressing its importance in maintaining high academic standards in the Bay State.

We chatted AGAIN with Siksika Astrophysicist ROB CARDINAL about "Everything is a Reflection," who invented math?, determinism/free-will and the universe, flow states, A.I. responsibility and protocol, meaningless coincidences, and always remembering to forgive. Remember, any support from the "Ancestral Podcast MERCH" www.relationalsciencecircle.com/shop helps pay Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and our editors, to follow protocols and keep this podcast going. SHOWNOTES: -Science is..."the relationality between the four ways of knowing/being (spiritual, physical, emotional, mental)" -ask yourself the question that stumped me... "Who invented math?" - what is "Spintronics"? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spintronics - Ceremony and time: when a ceremony is done at the same time (alignment of sun, stars, plant etc..) regularly, then it becomes a cyclical and rhythmic cycle. The moment a ceremony happened throughout this unique and relational cycle, a vector of frequency is created. This information/knowledge gifted or received within this ceremony, both reverberates outwards and also inwards! -Noether Theorem: https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/noether.html - Think about water and ice as symmetrical and asymmetrical.... - Pi as the Crux! A circle is never a static circle. - Science and Determinism- Boem's deterministic physical theory. Do you think the universe is deterministic? Do you think we have a choice in how the universe and our everyday changes? What is Free Will? -Grandfather Rock has lost its Free Will. (remember, rocks are animate, they are made of particles that are in constant motion, creating frequencies that interact with other particles connected to other rocks, trees, animals, humans, stars ... ). Grandfather rocks are significant for Indigenous Peoples because they hold knowledge from the Ancestors, that through ceremony and relationality, can be gifted to us humans. - Flow State as defined by Rob, is a time when we are gaining a symmetry that is more balanced. Remember the four ways of being/knowing, spiritual/emotional/physical/mental? Often science focuses on only the physical and the mental, and therefore is imbalanced and discounts 50% of the knowledge that is out there! Everything is constantly in flux (as described by Dr. Leroy Little Bear), and therefore is always imbalanced but always trying to balance itself. Remember this the next time you are in a flow state! A review of the cross-technology event This week there was a spring in the step of folks heading to ‘Dublin Tech Summit' at the RDS centre on Dublin's southside. It was a 2-day affair on the 15th and 16th of June, where face-to-face meetings, networking and tech talks were the order of the day. Dublin Tech Summit 2022 Reviewed The bustle of chatter, talks kicking off and a very full conference space led me to Detectify where Frederico talked about the external security service his company provides. Continuous automation of pre-pentest testing such as port scanning is a valuable service to provide independently of any internal security resources deployed. My journey moved around the busy event hall to Zoom where Harry Mosley, CIO and Matthew Kenny, Systems Engineer, showcased the new smart features on their product. This included PABX integrations and internal optimizations for a better user experience. The range of booths, talks and opportunities to meet folks was impressive indeed. I chatted with some entrepreneurs who requested secrecy around their products in the pre-launch stage noting the venture capital community was well represented at the summit making it an ideal networking opportunity for both parties concerned. The legal industry was also there in the form of Sarah Wilson and her colleagues from Cleaver Fulton Rankin located in Belfast city. Sarah and her legal colleagues are specialists in data compliance and governance in the tech space. The second day started off in a less populist manner but did fill up to a respectable degree where one was wary of getting too close to people in certain parts of the summit. Talks by many companies including Mastercard Foundry (the new design/R&D divisional merger), were in full swing. I visited the Foundry booth and was brought through some projects by James Conway and Stephen Elder. The use of Mastercard apps for making payments and opening up hotel doors based on existing products was an interesting product adaptation that Stephen was working on and immediately useful in my view. James was on the data side using IBM's quantum machine to run advanced algorithms on fraud detection and mapping of fraudulent transactions across Mastercard-enabled networks identifying previously unknown cash points in the journey of the fraudulent transaction. This investigative gap can now be swiftly resolved by quantum computing innovations such as this. I went into the Lenovo booth where Antonia brought me through the complimentary service and solutions innovation from Lenovo allowing Lenovo customers to gain value from this enhanced support solution. My journey then led me to a talk on AI and ‘How humans can co-exist with AI' as a panel discussion led by Laura Ellis. I was heartened by the great point made on how repeatable task elimination gives rise to new job opportunities for those willing to learn new things and take advantage of new opportunities. The second day's afternoon saw me attend talks such as ‘From Startup to Scale up' where experiences were shared by Stephen Crowley of Flipdish and Eileen O'Meara of Stripe. Both leaders commented extensively on the COVID challenges of remote working. This included catchment areas to an office for recruitment, the requirements of leadership based on knowing your people and the prioritization around managing company culture through adverse times. I also stopped off at the ThreatLocker's booth where Eoin McGrath brought me through their scalable agent-based service that materially enhances your fleet's security posture at the application level with their managed security solution. My final stop of the day was with Michal Sukiennik of Airnauts. I chatted with Michal for some time about development challenges in today's web 2.0 world and his company's outsourcing capabilities providing an integrated service that covers the product rather than just part of the project. This is now seen as the new best practice approach to web development of digital...

As the posters start to come down and it's now, once again, safe to answer the door without being asked for a vote for one person or another we're closing off our General Election coverage with a look inside the count centre. We're chatting to some of the candidates as they watch the mountains of votes be counted and double checked before pronouncements on whether they will spend the next five years as a member of the 33rd Dáil or to face into another period planning their next appeal to the voting public whenever that may arise. From the Sligo Park Hotel, we hear Martin Kenny's thoughts ahead of his resounding re-election on the first count on Sunday evening as part of the tide of Sinn Fein which was reflected across the entire country where 37 of the 42 candidates standing for the party romped home. Green Party candidate Blaithin Gallagher discusses her emotions as she watches her transfers from Kenny's surplus being counted just a few feet from where we were standing and chatting. Former TD & MEP Marian Harkin talks about the swings of the proportional representation system where vote preferences can have a major effect with every additional count after the elimination of each candidate. Frankie Feighan joins us, a few hours before his fate is confirmed, to discuss his prospects and how the remaining counts will play out and what permutations are needed to get him across the line. Independent candidate James Conway talks about his first journey into the world of politics and he is already planning his route to the next general election which he believes will possibly be inside the next six months. Outgoing TD Eamon Scanlon also previews his prospects a few hours before an expected result. He talks about the tough campaign he faced and how his experience of scraping into the last seat helps him deal with his current situation. Breifne also speak to Chris McManus, a Sligo councillor with Sinn Fein who had been nominated on the ticket but had withdrawn in favour of Martin Kenny. He speaks about his personal feelings about how the election evolved and how delighted he is with the trend towards Sinn Fein. We hear from the Assistant Returning Officer, Paraic O'Grady, as he announces the election of the four successful candidates. Martin Kenny (SF), Marian Harkin (IND), Marc MacSharry (FF), Frankie Feighan (FG). Finally we speak to elected TD Marc MacSharry about what happens now in terms of the formation of a government in the coming months.
After our very well received set of interviews with General Election candidates we had requests to feature more of them so we reached out again to the remaining ten potential TD's and we got positive responses from six of those which we bring to you today. In today's show you will hear from Cllr Declan Bree (Independent), James Conway (Independent), Deputy Marc MacSharry (Fianna Fail), Bernie O'Hara (Independent), Thomas Walsh (Fine Gael) & Sean Wynne (Independent) who are all seeking your vote on Saturday, 8th February. "It's morally unjust and unfair to tax a person's home. I gave a commitment ... that I would vote at council level against Property Tax." says Councillor Declan Bree of the recently increased Local Property Tax which is the biggest issue he's hearing on the doorstep. "If your ideas are good enough they will get attention and get people talking." Independent candidate James Conway speaks about the exposure he garnered with a viral video about the Apple tax bill and the progression of his political ambitions over the last four years. "The leadership of many organisations have let them down, there was a culture of flamboyance ... at the expense of the governance and administration of the sport itself." Fianna Fail's Marc MacSharry speaks about the scandals over the last 4 years with the Olympic Council of Ireland and the Football Association. "Businesses set up shop in areas where there is good hospitals, good schools, good social activities. ... By investing in these things, it would be money that would be returned one hundred fold, we're losing money by not investing." says Independent second time candidate Bernie O'Hara about the lack of investment into the rural areas in the North West of Ireland. "I come from that decade where many of my friends left the country because of the boom or bust days of previous governments. So many of my friends had to emigrate ... we don't want to go back to that decade." says Sligo Cllr Thomas Walsh, a first time Fine Gael candidate looking at the economy of the area and looking for a rebalancing. Finally our last guest on the show, Independent candidate Sean Wynne speaks about the cost of sewage as an issue for one off planning permission in County Leitrim. "Even if a couple got planning permission, they would be the Bord na Mona system which costs approx €60, up the road in Longford it costs €12,500." This brings to a close our 2020 General Election coverage. A fantastic thank you to each of the fifteen candidates who made themselves available to talk to their Leitrim voters via our podcast. Thanks also to Paschal Mooney who gave such a fantastic analysis of each candidate and the outlook for each of the candidates earlier in the election cycle. Regardless of what your politics are, I would ask you to please use your vote and exercise your right to vote for our next government.
The second of our Sligo-Leitrim election candidate debates, live from the Sligo Southern Hotel, features Declan Bree, James Conway, Shane Ellis, Frank Feighan, Blaithin Gallagher, Marian Harkin, Martin Kenny, Anne McCloskey and Marc MacSharry
The latest Independent election candidate to declare in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency has defended the content of his social media posts, which are highly critical of Government policy on rural Ireland. James Conway from Ballinacarrow says he's standing as he's completely exasperated, and the RIC commemoration issue has been the biggest scandal of all
On our second episode of PROJECT : CONNECT, Josh White (VP/County Manager) interviews marine veterans Jim Bottrell and James Conway about the transition from military to civilian life. San Diego is home to the largest concentration of military personnel, with military veterans making up more than 13% of the population. While the volume of service men and women is quite high here, it is not always known where to turn for resources when they are transitioning out into civilian roles. Jim Bottrell and James Conway bring two perspectives to the topic of veterans transitioning back into civilian life. Jim Bottrell is a veteran marine officer that now owns a successful real estate business, and has dedicated himself to hiring veterans and service personnel. James Conway spent 20 years in the marines before transitioning out, and now helps train other veterans transitioning for the organization Veteran Transition Support (https://www.veteranstransitionsupport...). Veterans Transition Support is a non-profit in Southern California dedicated to helping veterans transition from military to civilian, by providing no-cost training programs that can build upon their skills, career counseling, and more. The key takeaways from this conversation include... - Adjusting from rules and regulations in the military is a hard transition into civilian - No one organization can fully transition out a service member - There are resources, but you must seek them out and utilize them - Finding a job that builds upon the skills you had in service is key in your success - PTSD is real, and it can make it very difficult to cope with transitioning -- ABOUT PROJECT : CONNECT: Lawyers Title – San Diego lost one of our beloved title reps to suicide a few years ago, and has since then made mental health one of our philanthropic cornerstones. When an Afternoon Ride Turns in to a Rescue Mission This is the story of a rescue made possible by a satellite communicator, an inReach device. We've used the inReach for some time now, but only have experience with it as a convenient method of staying in contact with family and for checking weather in remote locations. When we were putting together this episode, part of the plan was to talk to someone who had to use their inReach for the purpose of rescue. And while searching for someone with a story, we experienced a rescue mission of our own. Jim Martin, show host, and his friend Brent Henry, went for an afternoon adventure ride, on the logging roads and trails on our island. That ride turned out to involve a serious injury and the subsequent rescue mission. Tess (Cassidy Freeman) and her team perform tests on Clark's (Tom Welling) crystal that she had retrieved from the arctic, causing it to send a beam of light into the universe. This triggers the arrival of Maxima (guest star Charlotte Sullivan), a queen from the planet Almerac, who is searching for her soulmate, who she believes sent the signal. Unfortunately, Maxima's power is too great for mortal men and her kiss kills them. The seductive Maxima arrives in Metropolis and begins her search, starting with Jimmy (Aaron Ashmore). Allison Mack and Erica Durance also star. James Conway directed the episode written by Turi Meyer 7 Al Septien (#3T7454).
This edition features stories on Afghan national army soldiers and coalition forces returning fire after an insurgent attack, Gen. James Conway visiting U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, and U.S. Soldiers going on foot patrols to search for improvised explosive devices. Hosted by Tech. Sgt. Deb Decker.
