Transphobia is all around us, and often inside us. As parents, we face it in everyday conversations with colleagues, family members, and friends. Our kids face it in school from peers, teachers, and friends.Over the years, the biggest concern I hear about raising a transgender child isn't about the medical stuff, it's fears about the way the world will treat that child. We know it's not all going to be nice. We know that our kids will face bullies and bigots. And I've heard from some of you that you want to fight back. So much of the anti-bullying policy and training in our school systems teaches kids to ignore it or walk away and find an adult. And it doesn't actually teach kids to extinguish bullying behavior or give parents tools to help.So what do we do?Today, I brought in an expert in communications with a specific focus on anti-bullying awareness. She's going to share some tools that are actually effective in helping kids stop bullying and hold on to their own power through a technique of using neutral responses. We're going to dig into what that means, why it makes sense and is effective, and how teaching kids to keep their power can spill over positively into other parts of their lives.Jamie Hamilton is a communications professor who knows that communication is the magic with which all relationships are created and destroyed. Jamie's passion is to teach people how to communicate in ways that enhance the areas of their life that matter most. With over twenty years of experience, Jamie has garnered an academic platform of excellence in higher education and is the founder of The Comm Experts, a communications consulting and coaching firm.Check out the full episode to hear about:The difference between one-up, one-down, and neutral responses and how they influence power dynamics with bulliesWhy just ignoring it and walking away doesn't workHow responding neutrally and factually builds confidenceWhy role-playing and practicing these responses with your kids is absolutely keyWhy it's essential that kids have affirming, trustworthy adults in their lives when they're experiencing bullyingHow parents can use communications tools to respond to difficult comments from other adultsWhy the block button is the most effective tool for online bullyingFind out more about Jamie Hamilton:The Comm ExpertsTikTok: @the_communication_expertFind out more about Mackenzie Dunham:Wildheartsociety.orgwildheartsociety.org/downloadsWild Heart Society on FacebookWild Heart Society on InstagramTikTok: @realgendertherapist

"It is in destabilization and movement and not stability and fixedness that reality finds opportunities to develop in interesting and unpredictable ways".Argentina's recent World Cup success represented a shift in the eco system of World Football. Football after all is a cultural expression however lately the local forces in which the game emerged have been usurped by global idealism as to how the game ought to be played. Gary is joined by UEFA 'A' coach and acclaimed writer, Jamie Hamilton, to discuss Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi and his in-possession system. Jamie discusses how De Zerbi 'breaks the rules' of traditional thinking by: - Provoking a press rather than avoiding pressure - Exposing team to 'high risk' in build-up - Keeping players narrow in build rather than wide - Slowing game down rather than opting for tempo The conversation then progresses into why variety and thinking outside the box are so important, both to player and coach development in the game today. Vehicles running on clean electricity for miles. It seemed like something out of a movie – until it wasn't. The modern car invented by Karl Benz and produced for the masses by Henry Ford has changed the world. Mobility. Convenience. Status. Freedom. And lots of emotion. Everyone has a story about their first car or that epic road trip down the coast. But there's a new player on the market. It drastically cuts emissions, fuel costs and maintenance. It's hailed by many as a key step in our journey to net zero. Initially, electric cars were reserved for the happy few who could afford the hefty price tag. And there was the charging anxiety to deal with too – what if the battery runs out mid route? The number of electric cars remains small versus the fossil-fuelled alternatives, but things are changing. The pandemic disrupted the traditional car markets and some are saying we've reached peak petrol. In fact, 1 in 2 people are already considering an electric vehicle. And the UK government has confirmed a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. So what's it going to take for all of us to switch to electric? Charging infrastructure continues to be top of mind for eco-warriors. And when is the right time to make the switch? Can we actually afford it? Does it suit our lifestyle? What about cuts to subsidies – how will they affect sales? How can businesses best embrace the financial and environmental benefits – think deliveries and company cars? What can we learn from other countries? And what does an all electric world look like? Tune in to find out: Who used to drive around in a yellow Datsun Cherry George's special formula for a great family car Why Jamie thinks more and more people are keen Who helped Daksh choose his next car Enjoyed the episode? In this episode of When Life Gives You Parkinson’s I talk with three friends about Deep Brain Stimulation. Becca Miller is contemplating it, David Sangster just had it and Jim Smerdon had it five years ago. “You hear everything,” said Jim Smerdon of Vancouver, B.C. when I asked what he heard when doctors drilled a hole through his skull and into his brain. “It was the clearest memory I’ve ever had of anything of my life.” Jim was awake for the first five hours of Deep Brain Stimulation to treat his Parkinson’s disease. My neurologist told my wife and I that if my motor symptoms and dyskinesia from carbidopa-levodopa do not level off in six months, we will add my name to the DBS evaluation list. The wait time for evaluation in British Columbia is three years and currently there is just one doctor who performs surgery here. “Deep Brain Stimulation is considered the most commonly performed surgical treatment for Parkinson’s disease,” said Jamie Hamilton, senior associate director of research programs for the Michael J Fox Foundation. Hamilton explains that DBS is an invasive procedure which implants electrodes deep in the brain. The electrodes are controlled by a neurostimulator which is surgically implanted into his chest and sends electric impulses to specific targets in the brain. Becca is a single mom of a 7-year old. She is scared to have DBS while her daughter is so young. But, she understands the benefits, “…that sounds just amazing. It feels like in some ways, you know, in some ways it's like a last resort and in other ways it feels like a reset. And a gift of time.” For David, it has been life changing. He’s back to playing with his kids, being an equal partner to his wife and playing piano. “It’s amazing,” says David. “I can be there when my kids need me - every time. (I can) take them to school, drive the car, and make them cereal. It’s also being there for my wife and being more of a person than I used to be.” Jim was able to completely come off the carbidopa-levodopa for a year. But, his wife Deana Grinnell says he’s back up to 8 or 9 pills per day. That’s fewer than the 20 or so he was on prior to surgery by the dyskinesia is back. “His disease is progressing,” Deana said. “It’s effecting his balance. His speech is getting softer. It’s just marching on.” Thank you for listening. Oh look! It's only football's version of the Joe Rogan Experience but without the Joe Rogan experience. Dangerous ideas explored but with very little hard-hitting interviewing along the way. This week, Jon and Nico are joined by a third Moron, Jamie Hamilton, who comes to us as an emissary of aforementioned Rogan - Joe - to offer something of a defence. During the course of the discussion, we talk: * Jon defends Flat Earthers as 'more scientific in some sense' than the rest of us. * We talk about Jonathan Wilson's PSG piece in which he goes in two-footed on Neymar. * Nico basically cries lamenting how toxic masculinity has ruined elite football. Typical. * We talk a bit about Nike's advertising campaign. Nico and Jamie seem alarmingly happy to just swallow the lies of Late Capitalism but don't worry - Jon keeps them on the straight and narrow. All this and more beside in this week's episode of Morons!

Artist Jamie Hamilton stops by to discuss his upcoming article for Vasari21 on Telematic Space. In this episode we get new insights into topics we've covered on the show by talking about the technologies that influence our experience. To Jaimie the idea that humanity will become useless as artificial intellligence takes our place seems unlikely and indicative of a fundamental missunderstanding of how dependent AI is on data sets generated by people.
