This episode will take a closer look at India's mechanism to release prisoners, particularly in light of the reality of prison overcrowding and the significant number of people in jail awaiting completion of their trials. According to a Supreme Court estimate, India has over 5.7 lakh prisoners confined in various jails across the country, of which 76% were reported as undertrial prisoners (as of December 2022). In this context, Kripa Koshy (Programme Manager, Takshashila) is joined by Shreehari Paliath (Senior Policy Analyst and Researcher, IndiaSpend) and Leah Verghese (Research Manager, Daksh) as they unpack the challenges around Undertrial Review Committees, legal aid and cash bail schemes that were intended to ease the pressures of overcrowding in Indian prisons. The PGP is a comprehensive 48-week hybrid programme tailored for those aiming to delve deep into the theoretical and practical aspects of public policy. The media is a cornerstone of Indian democracy, often called the “fourth pillar” for its role in supporting constitutional values. Yet today, trust in the media is eroding amid technological upheaval, shifting revenue models, political polarization, and the powerful rise of social media and artificial intelligence. As these forces reshape how information flows, can the media still serve as a guardian of our constitutional ideals? And who, if anyone, will defend the independence and integrity of the media? This session is the third in the series titled ‘We the People' to celebrate 75 years of our Constitution. As part of this series, DAKSH, in collaboration with BIC, is organising a series of lectures and panel discussions on various aspects of the Constitution. It's with great pleasure we share our interview with Daksh Gupta, Group CEO of Huws Gray. We discuss how he started his working life, his career progression and transferring motor trade skills to other industries. Daksh still has strong automotive ties and continues to work and advise in his roles with Ford and the IMI. An inspirational discussion which has something for everyone, whether your selling cars, working in service or managing a team. Here are the highlights: {02:12} Where it all started {13:58} Steps into Management {17:37} All about the numbers {23:02} Mentors {31:34} Supergroups {45:12} Agency About Symco Training: Symco Training was founded in 2000 by Simon Bowkett and it was his belief that the business had to offer its clients something different. That difference was clear to Simon from his days in the dealership when he experienced many sales trainers who had all the answers, but were unable, unwilling or both to actually show the delegate how they could be implemented. It remains the ethos of the business today. You see, Symco only employ trainers that are committed to delivering not only inspiring and insightful training, but are equally as happy to demonstrate these skills and techniques with real customers in your own showroom. We believe in order for sales training to be effective and in Simon's words ‘real world', it needs to be tried and tested in the only place it matters the showroom floor. There is no room for theory when your goals are for your team to sell more cars, hours or parts and retain more profit. In dealerships around the world the focus applied by many of the sales executives is to try and sell a deal. Symco specialise in getting your teams to focus on selling themselves, the product and then supporting this with the deal. To find out more visit: www.symcotraining.co.uk

In this video we're joined by Ankur Verma of 3DUnplugged and the DAKSH toolchanger project. Brought to you by PCBWay. Register at https://jle.vi/pcbway and get a $5 welcome bonus!Starting off by building his (and India's first) Voron 2.4 printer in the pandemic days, Ankur has been involved in exploring multi-material 3D printing over the last few years. His first foray into this exciting and challenging world was the IDEX Switchwire printer with two independent heads in 2022 - the first one to bring Hybrid CoreXY/CoreXZ kinematics into Klipper.Shifting his focus next to the multi-headed tool changer ecosystem, he designed and released the WP-DAKSH V1 Tool Changer with six independent tool heads. It utilized an innovative servo-based locking mechanism along with 3D printed parts to deliver a reliable and fast tool changer experience. The latest release from him, DAKSH V2 Tool Changer, further brings down the tool change time from v1's 9 seconds to an ultra-fast sub-4 seconds, while adding to the reliability and fast printing aspects. DAKSH V2 Tool Changer is also fully mechanical without the need for a servo or motor-based locking mechanism and can be fully assembled using only 3D printed parts and off-the-shelf components, bypassing the need for machined parts.A software engineer by training, he has also been working on incorporating intelligence into the multi-material printing workflow with predictive toolhead management and error detection systems built into the DAKSH Tool Changer.

Two weeks ago, a five-judge bench of India's Supreme Court ruled that electoral bonds—a controversial instrument of political giving introduced by the Narendra Modi government—violated the Constitution and would immediately cease operating.Under the court's ruling, the State Bank of India will immediately stop issuing bonds; the Election Commission of India must disclose details of all transactions since April 2019; and any bonds which have not yet been encashed are to be refunded. On this week's podcast, Grand Tamasha host Milan Vaishnav—who has written extensively about campaign finance in India—takes a turn in the hot seat. In a special collaboration with DAKSH, a Bangalore-based non-profit working on judicial reforms and access to justice, Leah Verghese (host of the DAKSH Podcast) interviews Milan about the Court's ruling and what it means for the future of political funding in India. The two discuss the history of campaign finance in India, the controversy around electoral bonds, and the controversy around foreign funding of elections. Plus, Milan and Leah discuss why ordinary Indians should care about the dynamics of election funding.Episode notes:1. How do people, who are often at the receiving end of legal violence, engage with the law? Amidst the grinding terror trials – which are replete with stories of torture, illegal detention and fabricated charges – this presentation will discuss how the terror-accused schooled themselves in legal language and came to understand how paperwork's certificatory procedures produce legal truth. Though seemingly mundane, legal technicalities are fraught and highly contested, and acquire urgent ethical qualities in the life of a trial: legal language becomes a question of a form of life. The file becomes a space in which the world can be made or unmade, and the petition is a way of imagining a future. In attending to the ways in which legal technicalities are made to work – through legal language and through files – we are offered a way of understanding how human expressiveness, creativity and vulnerability emerge through the law. In this episode of BIC Talks, author and senior lecturer in law at SOAS, University of London, Mayur Suresh talks about his research in the area, followed by a conversation with research manager at Daksh, Leah Verghese. Despite nearly 6 years of implementation of GST in India, the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) is yet to be constituted. While the GST Council is set to deliberate upon the issue, setting up the GSTAT presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a resilient and state-of-the-art dispute resolution mechanism in the country. In this episode, Sarthak Pradhan & Shrikrishna Upadhaya speak to Jatin Christopher (Partner, JCSS, Bengaluru) & Surya Prakash B.S. (Programme Director, DAKSH, Bengaluru) on the work of the Coalition of GSTAT in advocating for institutional design, operating model, and legal framework for a truly modern GSTAT. They discuss the role and importance of a citizen-centric and independent GSTAT, principles of institutional design that must back the structure of GSTAT, and the vexed issue of the federal nature of dispute resolution under the GST laws. Shownotes The Elephant in the Room is my learning and listening project. Something that started out during a period of deep introspection and despair evolved to also becoming a passion project. But being passionate means always trying to do better and living up to the committed purpose - to shine a light on issues of inclusion & inequity. In this case it is about spotlighting the importance of access to justice for everyone in society. The partnership with the India Justice Report is also about getting ordinary citizens to understand the justice system better - so that they are better able to exercise their rights. My guests on this episode are Maja Daruwala, Chief Editor of the India Justice Report, and a barrister from Lincolns Inn and Valay Singh, Project Lead of the India Justice Report. We spoke about the purpose behind India's first ever ranking of states on their capacity to deliver justice. The report measures the structural capacity of state based instrumentalities of the justice system against their own declared mandates. We also spoke about
Vehicles running on clean electricity for miles. It seemed like something out of a movie – until it wasn't. The modern car invented by Karl Benz and produced for the masses by Henry Ford has changed the world. Mobility. Convenience. Status. Freedom. And lots of emotion. Everyone has a story about their first car or that epic road trip down the coast. But there's a new player on the market. It drastically cuts emissions, fuel costs and maintenance. It's hailed by many as a key step in our journey to net zero. Initially, electric cars were reserved for the happy few who could afford the hefty price tag. And there was the charging anxiety to deal with too – what if the battery runs out mid route? The number of electric cars remains small versus the fossil-fuelled alternatives, but things are changing. The pandemic disrupted the traditional car markets and some are saying we've reached peak petrol. In fact, 1 in 2 people are already considering an electric vehicle. And the UK government has confirmed a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. So what's it going to take for all of us to switch to electric? Charging infrastructure continues to be top of mind for eco-warriors. And when is the right time to make the switch? Can we actually afford it? Does it suit our lifestyle? What about cuts to subsidies – how will they affect sales? How can businesses best embrace the financial and environmental benefits – think deliveries and company cars? What can we learn from other countries? And what does an all electric world look like?
