Bassist, composer, educator and actor John Brown teaches at Duke University and currently serves as Vice Provost for the Arts, Director of the Jazz Program and Professor of the Practice of Music. He has performed internationally with artists like Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Elvin Jones, Nnenna Freelon, Cyrus Chestnut, Diahann Carroll, Rosemary Clooney, Nell Carter, Lou Donaldson, Slide Hampton, Nicholas Payton, Frank Foster, Larry Coryell, Cedar Walton, Fred Wesley, Bernard Purdie and Mark Whitfield, as well as giving regular performances as a substitute with the North Carolina Symphony since 1992. He has performed for President Barack Obama, and at major national and international venues and festivals in Asia, Europe and across North and South America. John has a Grammy nomination for his performance and co-writing on Nnenna Freelon's 1996 Concord release, Shaking Free, and he has an Emmy nomination for producing the first Duke Student Arts Showcase. He has also produced and performed on recordings for Nnenna Freelon and Linda Lavin. The film One Night in Kernersville (documenting the first recording session of John's Big Band) won “Best Short Film” at the Full Frame Film Festival, “Best Cinematography” at the Charlotte Film Festival and was featured on the Documentary Channel. John has also served multiple times as a juror and as Chair for the Pulitzer Prize in Music and for various engagements with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tina Raymond is an accomplished drummer, composer, bandleader, and educator based in Los Angeles, CA. A unique voice in the contemporary improvised music scene, Raymond blends traditional jazz vocabulary with African polyrhythm and classical percussion technique. She is the Director of Jazz Studies at Cal State Northridge, and her new trio album Divinations will be released October 6th. Kofi B. is a 22-year-old Emmy-Nominated musician, producer, and actor born in Akron, Ohio. Kofi has gathered musical experience from myriad venues across the United States. At the age of 15, Kofi was accepted into the University of Akron School of Music's Jazz Program, making him the youngest African-American pianist to ever be accepted into a collegiate-level jazz program at the institution. While music remains at the core, Kofi's accolade extends beyond the big stage. In 2014, President Barack Obama and the White House awarded Kofi with the "President's Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence" . In 2018, Kofi joined the ranks of Black-ish star Anthony Anderson, R&B songstresses Lauryn Hill, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Kanye West in winning the Silver medal in the NAACP ACT-SO National Competition; making him the first person from Akron to ever win. David Espeut didn't follow the path of most writers. For much of his life, he focused his creative energy on music. As a graduate of UofT's Jazz Program, he's written three musical productions and over a hundred songs. But the entire time, notions of novel writing lingered in the back of his mind. One day, while teaching music to a group of chatty Kindergarten students, the idea for the Humanity Series was born. Mr. Howard, a native of Hondo, TX, started his teaching career at Morton Ranch High School, where he was a band director and helped open the school in 2004. At Morton Ranch, he taught the Concert Band, Jazz Band, assisted with the marching band. Before teaching at Morton Ranch, Mr. Howard was an instructor for the Cedar Park High School Band in Cedar Park, Texas and an instructor for the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps from Madison, Wisconsin. As a performer, Mr. Howard has performed with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, the Austin Symphony Orchestra, the Austin Lyric Opera and several bands around the Austin/San Antonio area. Mr. Howard graduated from Texas State University in San Marcos, Suma Cum Laude, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He lives in Leander with his wife Amber, his daughter, Madison and his son, Justin.

I’m happy to announce that we have our first drummer and percussionist on the show! I’ve seen him perform many times over the years and have always enjoyed something about his playing that is hard to describe. I guess I could say that it is as much about his Presence as his playing. He was born in Bronxville, New York, grew up in Western Connecticut, and made his way to California in 1974. He performs in and around the Bay Area playing with a large pool of musicians and plays in a variety of styles and genres. That said, he has a special passion for Haitian drumming, has studied seriously for many years, and performs regularly with two Bay Area Haitian dance companies. He has also been a member of the Brazilian Jazz guitarist/composer Ricardo Peixoto’s quintet for five years. Our guest is also a teacher, teaching both privately and at Sonoma State University, where he leads an ensemble in the Jazz Program.He is one of the first people I thought of having on the show when Daniel and I first started this project, so I’m thrilled that we finally got to sit down with him, and get to share our conversation with you! She moved here in June of 2018 at just 17 years old to attend the University of Louisville's Jazz Program. Who does that at 17? Miss Lucy, that's who. He is a graduate of the School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the School of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. About Herbert: Herbert D. Smith currently lives in São Paulo, Brazil.  He has had a diverse international performance career for over 20 years, performing with tenor saxophone greats like Eddie Harris, Teddy Edwards, and Buddy Collette, pianists Art Hillery, Harold Land Jr., Ted Jackson, John Wood and George Cables, jazz vocalist Elaine Miles, guitarists Steve Cotter and John Chiodini, Mexican vocal stylist Sandra Valdivia, Capitol Records blues singer Betty Hall Jones, Basie trombonist Jimmie Cheatham, Dr. Ronald V. Myers, great jazz drummers Clayton Cameron of the Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis Jr. bands, the legendary Billy Higgins and Sherman Ferguson. As an orchestra section bassist, he has performed under Maestros Dr. Herbert Blomstedt and Dr. Jon Robertson in the Blomstedt Summer Orchestra, Riverside, California.   Smith also performed with the New American Orchestra in Hollywood under Music Director and Conductor Dr. Luther Henderson, and was Principal Bassist of the Riverside Civic Light Opera Orchestra.  Prior to coming to Brazil, Smith performed World Music for 3 years as house bassist at the Orange County California nightly "hotspot" “ The Caspian “ in Irvine, California. Smith was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.  He started his music education at the famed Chicago Music College (CMC) of Roosevelt University. CMC former students consisted of Robert Lamm of the rock group "Chicago" and Jazz Saxophonist Steve Coleman of the Thad Jones Mel Lewis Orchestra. Through the advice and recommendation of the late Chicago Symphony Bassist Warren Benfield, Smith traveled to Madison Wisconsin to study with Jazz Bassist Richard Davis at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, then on to Milwaukee with Laura Synder currently with the Milwaukee Symphony. Smith received a scholarship to study in the Jazz Program at Livingston College of Rutgers University in Livingston, New Jersey under the direction of Bassist Larry Ridley.  As a young bassist in his 20's, Smith became the founder of the Los Angeles Bass Violin Choir, a group of prominent Los Angeles area bassists performing special arrangements by Smith and New York bassist Bill Lee. Bill Lee, father of director Spike Lee, and founder of the New York Bass Violin Choir, premiered many unique compositions and arrangements in his son's earlier films. Regular players consisted of Frederick Tinsley, the late Andy Simpkins, Herbie Lewis and George "Red" Callendar, John Heard, and classical double bass extraordinaire Bertram Turetsky. Additional players to perform with the bass choir were bassists Roberto Miranda, James Leary and Alan Jackson. A naturally gifted musician, San Diego born bassist Darryl Williams began playing bass at the young age of 13. Within two years he was playing at local clubs and events around the San Diego area, which includes opening up for smash RnB group Lakeside. He also played with Gospel Legend Shirley Caesar at age 16. After graduating from high school, Williams did a four-month tour of Japan with other young talented musicians, which he states as being "unforgettable". Upon returning to the States, that same band did a three-month tour opening for soul legend Al Green. After that tour, Darryl enrolled in the Jazz Program at San Diego State University and studied with San Diego legends Gunner Biggs and Rick Helzer. With a hunger to grow musically, he sought out other teachers as well which includes former Miles Davis and John Coltrane bassist Marshall Hawkins, Sarah Vaughn bassist Bob Magnusson, great San Diego bassist Cecil Mcbee Jr. and San Diego sax icon Hollis Gentry III. By age 21, Williams was a regular on the San Diego music scene performing regularly with artist like Hollis Gentry, Evan Marks and Patrick Yandall to name a few. In 1997, Williams moved to Las Vegas and performed regularly at all the prestigious Hotels and Casinos working with headliners and recording artist. One of the artist Williams performed regularly with was Las Vegas Hall Fame inductee Clint Holmes. In 1999, Williams was hired as Musical Director for The International House Of Blues Foundation and continued working with several artist and was involved several recording projects. From 2001 to 2003 he was one of the in house bassists at the world renowned Blue Note Jazz Club in which performed with sax legend Chico Freeman, RnB legend Angela Bofil and was the co-host of the Sunday Night Blue Note Jam Session. Williams was also the second call bassist for Chaka Khan from 2003-2004, which included several performances across the States. From 2003 to 2007 Williams worked with several recording artist in Las Vegas such as Ronnie Foster, Ghalib Ghallab, Tevin Campbell, Clint Holmes, Keith Washington, Skip Martin, Howard Hewitt and many more. In 2008 Williams relocated to California. Upon relocating, he released his first solo CD, “That Was Then” and received high praises from several top smooth jazz writers and dj’s. In a Jazz Times Magazine article dated October 2008, noted jazz writer Brian Soergel says, “ Is there room for another smooth jazz bassist to join the ranks of Wayman Tisdale, Brian Bromberg, Michael Manson and Gerald Veasley? In the case of Darryl Williams the answer is an enthusiastic yes”! Two songs from Williams debut effort were featured on the Weather Channel and can be heard today on Sirius XM radio, Music Choice and international and national radio stations alike. From 2008 to current, Williams has performed or toured with several of the top Contemporary Jazz Artist of today. Some notable names include Euge Groove, Michael Lington, Richard Elliot, Mindi Abair, Jeff Lorber, Peter White, Brenda Russell, Jeff Golub, Paul Brown, Darren Rahn, Jessy J, Everette Harp, Jeff Kashiwa, Eric Darius, "Queen Of Disco" Gloria Gaynor and many more. Long before our full fleshed music program Westminster was home to one of the most well known jazz programs in the country. At the peak of the program students had the opportunity to study and jam with visiting artists such as Frank Zappa, Tom Scott, Jean Luc Ponty, and Mothers of Invention. This time, I thought we’d wander about the collection listening to a teeny bit of the Jazz that my father recorded. Given everything he did, it is easy to forget his keen interest in jazz and of his important recordings, such as for Jazz at the Philharmonic series. But rather than get caught up in the history of Jazz or the role that my father played or make an attempt at being exhaustive with the jazz recordings, I thought we would make things simple and just goose around the collection a bit.
