Stress isn't just a career hazard for salespeople—it's a silent performance killer. According to research, over 70% of sellers struggle with their mental health. Jeff Riseley, the founder of Sales Health Alliance, talks in-depth about the data and what professionals and managers can do to address this mental health crisis in sales. As a coach, Jeff has mentored thousands of sellers and leaders on how to succeed in sales without sacrificing their well-being. In this episode, Jeff shares actionable insights on managing visible and hidden stressors, setting a positive example as a sales leader, and developing a resilient mindset that truly sticks. This episode is filled with tips on how to rethink your sales strategy, so you can drive revenue without driving yourself to the edge. In this episode, you'll learn: The role of understanding stress mechanics in sales performance. By teaching sales teams about the effects of stress on physiology and finding an optimal stress zone, leaders can enhance creativity, curiosity, and empathy. The necessity for sales leaders to lead by example in health and performance. High standards in personal well-being and stress management set a positive example for teams, improving the overall experience and motivating team members to prioritize their mental health. Integrating rest and recovery into performance conversations. Jeff Riseley is the Founder of Sales Health Alliance which is a consultancy that focuses on the mental health and well-being of sales professionals. They provide resources, education, and support to people in sales who may be experiencing stress, burnout, or other mental health challenges. In this episode, we discuss the importance of mental health initiatives in organizations and the impact they have on sales performance. With alarming statistics showing that over 60% of sellers struggle with mental health and stress, Jeff provides data-driven insights on how addressing mental health can actually improve sales performance more than focusing solely on pointed problems like prospecting. Jeff shares personal experiences and advice on how to frame mental health from a sales leadership perspective, and unpacks why people change jobs, often due to underlying mental health issues. He also talks about the downsides of burning and churning talent, and the importance of investing in mental health initiatives to improve employee productivity and well-being. With practical tips and mindset tricks, Jeff provides valuable insights from his consultant work at Sales Health Alliance and his book on normalizing conversations around mental health within sales organizations. He says absolutely and backs it up with data. 63% of sellers are struggling with mental health, 79% of sellers are feeling stressed or highly stressed. He cites examples of correlations between improved stress and improved sales performance.[3:40] Jeff talks about how trying to address pointed problems like prospecting isn't as impactful as addressing mental health.[8:25] Jeff explains how to frame mental health from a sales leadership perspective. I wish I would have had the advice he shares here earlier in my career. [9:53] We unpack why people change jobs and how trying to prevent hiring people with poor mental health doesn't work because people rarely share why they're really changing. We might think and want to think that it's because of the opportunity to work with us or something like that but the real reason may be much more deeply rooted.[15:39] He talks about his experience in sales and dealing with the associated stress. He went from University to a sales role and talks about a blindspot in the sales industry where the extent of stress that the common fresh grads that enter sales forces is maybe heartbreak or failed a class. That's their stress baseline which is much different than what you experience in sales. 20:23] Jeff explains why, “Anxiety in sales is not optional.” 23:25] We get into the notion of ‘burning and churning' talent. Jeff breaks down his viewpoint on how sales leadership has adopted this approach because they can always find more talent but the reality is this is costing organizations millions of dollars. The name of the game now is “do more with less” and constant turnover does not align with that. “You need to get more out of your people, not less, and to get the most out of them you have to get them to stick around.” 27:13] We discuss the downsides of not investing into mental health initiatives and deploying some of these best practices. Jeff explains the concept of “Presenteeism” where employees are ‘clocked but checked out'. The study he cites found that businesses lose, on average, per employee, 57 working days per year due to Presenteeism. Someone who would have taken 10 minutes to write...

He also talks about some of the challenges that companies face in terms of effective mental health and how to overcome them. Jeff also discusses how the brain is naturally built to be on guard, and how this affects the way sales is structured. HIGHLIGHTS:JEFF: His mission to help people experience mental health problems"If I can help that one person who might not be sleeping, or dealing with a panic attack, panic attack, or even give just one person a little bit of hope, my attention is all focused on serving them. So I'm lucky that I get to do this on a daily basis, and I genuinely get a lot of motivation from helping people pass that.”JEFF: The importance of trust in sales and organizations"It's only when we're in environments and we're in situations when we can drop that guard to feel safe, and it really comes down to do I trust the people that I'm working with on a daily basis to have them have my best interests at heart. Because only when we're in a trusting situation. Well, that middle part of the brain that's on guard, shut down and say here creativity and logic, go do your amazing things like close up a big deal or learn that objection handle or do all of these cool things that we need to do as humans to thrive.” You can connect with Jeff and check out his work in the links below:Sales Health Alliance Website: https://saleshealthalliance.com/LinkedIn - http://linkedin.com/in/jeffriseley/ If you're listening to the Peak Performance Selling Podcast, please subscribe, share, and send us your feedback.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanbenjamin/Website - http://mycoreos.com/Podcast - https://www.mycoreos.com/podcastEmail - Jordan@MyCoreOS.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/jbenj09

As adults, responsibilities can take over our lives, leading to days filled with worry, anxiety, and stress. Moreover, the technology that's supposed to help make our lives easier can even contribute to the already stressful environment that we find ourselves in. In this second of a four-part series, Jordan continues his conversation with Sales Health Alliance founder Jeff Riseley about mental health management tips to help you not only to survive but thrive in your workplace. Jeff particularly hones in on gratitude, and how focusing on positive takeaways can literally strengthen your brain muscles and help you gain a healthy disposition, regardless of the situation you are in.  HIGHLIGHTSIs technology taking over your life?Helpful habits for managing your mental health more effectively Focusing on gratitude can do wonders for your brain health Be child-like in your gratitude  QUOTESJeff on the dangers of letting technology drive you: "The technology that we surround ourselves each day, it loves when we're not thinking logically. And it loves when we're in react mode. Because when we're in react mode and we're feeling emotional, we're going to turn to things like social media and our devices to try and replace that void that we're feeling." Jeff on neuroplasticity and gratitude: "You can literally strengthen muscles in your brain and change how our brain is operating by executing on things like gratitude, which is huge. So the more you kind of go back and reflect and focus on the positive things taking place that may have been overshadowed by a massive deal falling through, or getting stuck in traffic, or that person cutting you off in the street. The more you go back and reflect on those things, the more your brain learns how to direct attention and become focused on those things moving forward." You can connect with Jeff and check out his work in the links below:Sales Health Alliance Website: https://saleshealthalliance.com/LinkedIn - http://linkedin.com/in/jeffriseley/ If you're listening to the Peak Performance Selling Podcast, please subscribe, share, and send us your feedback.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanbenjamin/Website - http://mycoreos.com/Podcast - https://www.mycoreos.com/podcastEmail - Jordan@MyCoreOS.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/jbenj09

With sales being one of the most demanding professions in the world, it's prudent to assume that stress and anxiety are just part of the job. In this first of four-part series, your host Jordan Benjamin talks to the founder of the Sales Health Alliance, Jeff Riseley about equipping sellers with the tools to tackle mental health challenges in the workplace in a more productive way. Jeff also opens up about his testicular cancer diagnosis, and why we need to actively reshape the way sellers are perceived in the workplace.  HIGHLIGHTSSurviving (but not thriving) in a sink-or-swim sales environmentTesticular cancer diagnosis and other life-changing events Salespeople are basically 'Corporate Athletes' How to manage anxiety and stress in a productive way  QUOTESJeff on his struggle with mental health as a new seller: "Going to therapy 10 years ago was still highly stigmatized, that's really where I had to make this choice where I was like, I had found this career that I really enjoyed, the learning, the growth, the money you could make, the camaraderie, the rush you get when you close a big deal. But if I wanted to stay in this career, I needed to figure out a way to make myself more resilient."Jeff's idea that inspired him to start the Sales Health Alliance: "They [salespeople] are not really employees. They're really corporate athletes. So [it's]how do we really start teaching them the ways to navigate stressors in sales in a mentally healthy way to start an upward spiral, instead of a downward spiral by giving them the pads and the helmets they need to play a contact sport."  You can connect with Jeff and check out his work in the links below:Sales Health Alliance Website: https://saleshealthalliance.com/LinkedIn - http://linkedin.com/in/jeffriseley/ If you're listening to the Peak Performance Selling Podcast, please subscribe, share, and send us your feedback.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanbenjamin/Website - http://mycoreos.com/Podcast - https://www.mycoreos.com/podcastEmail - Jordan@MyCoreOS.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/jbenj09

This week on the Catapulting Commissions podcast Anthony welcomes Jeff Riseley. Jeff is the founder of the sales health alliance, which was created to empower sales professionals and sales leaders to reach peak levels of performance and well-being through better mental health. The company seeks to align sales leaders with health experts and tech providers on building awareness around mental health within the sales industry.   Jeff started his journey in sales in the classic “sink or swim” sales environment. He did well in that space, but behind the scenes he was not okay. He had insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks. It was after a panic attack landed him in the hospital that he realized something needed to change.   That led Jeff to try to learn everything he could about living his daily life in a way that protected his mental health while still allowing him to do this job he loved so much. He knew that stress and anxiety were not optional in sales; he just had to figure out how to navigate that.   Today he and Anthony discuss how to eliminate and improve the most toxic elements in the sales industry to optimize the mental performance of everyone involved.   Jeff Riseley on LinkedIn Sales Health Alliance

One of the greatest challenges we have observed from the current sales environment is – How to manage and motivate a diverse and remote global sales workforce. Jeff Riseley is currently the Founder of the Sales Health Alliance and Mental Health Advocate. With over a decade of sales experience – Jeff understands the importance of Mental Health in achieving peak sales performance. Jeff combines his sales and Mental Health expertise to improve sales performance through a mix of sales mentorship and mental health best practices. His strategies have helped sales teams improve their sales process, while helping them become more motivated, resilient and better equipped to tackle stressful events within sales. Who is on a mission to end Mental Health stigma in the workplace. Welcome Jeff thank you, for taking time out: • From our previous call you have an incredible backstory; would you mind sharing that with us please? An over performer, all looked good on the outside not the case on the inside. Cancer survivor. Sales people are corporates athletics, we need to give them, the pads, gloves… • Can you share some of the statistics on mental health within the sales industry? General population, sales and now post Covid. 58% of salespeople struggle with Mental Health. Unfortunately there is still a stigma around addressing this in the workplace. • What specific steps can sales professionals take to improve their mental health, whilst still performing? Challenge their leaders to create a psychologically safe environment. • What advice do you have for the sales leadership community to support their teams and individuals at this time of increased uncertainty? Listen rather than be a problem solver. Data from the World Health Organization shows that for every $1 put into scaled up treatment for common mental disorders (anxiety, depression, burnout, etc), results in a $4 return on improved health and productivity. • What do you wish you knew early on in your career, that you know today? Take off the mask and create human connection and be authentic self. Always positive intent. FOMO and companies will lose top sales talent if not allowing them recovery time. • How would you recommend one follows up if interested in discussing your services further? Email: jeff@saleshealthalliance.com Wanted to share a recent post from Jeff that illustrates the value of building resilience as sales individuals: Sales enablement teams should emulate Formula 1 car companies in their hunt for higher sales performance and efficiency. They are missing these 2 key buckets: When you envision a Formula 1 race and you think about a Ferrari racing around the track... What do you see? You see a multi-million dollar car with the best car technology in the world. In sales this is your tech stack - comprised of all the best sales technologies on the market. You also see a driver who is being fed insight from their team on the sideline. This is your salesperson who is receiving Training and Coaching from their manager. But sales enablement usually stops there. They are missing: 1) Resilience - Practical strategies the driver and salesperson can use to respond to stressful situations (near death experiences or missing target). Tools that protect their Mental Health and keep performance high. This also includes pit stops during the race or quarter that keep the driver, car and salesperson from breaking down. 2) Recovery - Time between races when drivers and salespeople can recover from the stress of competition. Often times, salespeople are never allowed to get off the track. Without these 2 buckets a sales team will never reach peak levels of performance.

Jeff Riseley is the founder of the Sales Health Alliance. Today we are talking about the long term ramifications of this last year on salespeople. Few companies have acknowledged this extraordinary situation and most are pushing harder than ever. We dive into why Jeff believes that sellers are relying too heavily on willpower to push through their work tasks and are unable to rest and recover effectively. In his mind, this means an OVERCORRECTION is coming. Jeff believes that one outcome of this will be a sizable increase in what he calls "sales sabbaticals" AKA – top Salespeople deciding to take a break. We talk about why he believes this is going to rock the workforce and sales teams all over the world. We also dive into what sales managers need to be doing, right now, to create a sales environment where they can balance the stress and the need for performance. Learn more about your ad choices. Sales and mental health: Episode Notes The relation between sales and mental health has always been fairly controversial due to the nature of the job. Sales representatives are continuously exposed to a wide range of stressors, which makes them an easy target for issues like burnout, anxiety and depression. Statistically, over 40% of sales people experience mental health problems, and if we consider entry-level roles the percentage is even higher (above 50%). On top of that, the best performers seem to be as exposed as the rest of their team, if not more. In this episode of the Stepsero podcast we are joined by Jeff Riseley, a people leader with extensive experience in the field of mental health.Based on his own research, Jeff shares interesting insights about the triggers that sales people commonly experience. Among these, "micro management" and "missing the target" top the list of stressors, while "getting rejected" seems to be the last concern on their minds, likely due to the levels of resilience that professionals in the front lines build over time. What can leaders do?According to Jeff, it makes sense for leaders to avoid approaching the whole organization at once. Sales teams are used to being evaluated on specific indicators, therefore making it easier to measure the effect that improvements on their mental health have on performance metrics.A good way to go about this is by focusing on two main areas:Self-care - by building healthy habits around sleep, nutrition, and self-esteem, among others.Stress-management - by helping individuals respond to stressful situations in a mentally healthy way. In this regard, leaders can help employees navigate strong emotions and rebuild themselves from the ground up.We conclude the interview with an interesting take about the flaws of the current academic system, and the reason why it often fails to adequately prepare students for their professional careers. Think of five salespeople you know. Imagine their names and faces. Odds are, at least two of them are struggling with their mental health.   But no one's really talking about mental health in sales, even though survey research has shown that over 40% of salespeople struggle with mental health.   In this episode, I interview Jeff Riseley, the founder of the Sales Health Alliance, about his passion to create more awareness around mental health in sales — and to help salespeople and sales leaders navigate stressful sales situations in a mentally healthy way to increase performance.   What we talked about: - The ROI of investing in mental health - The difference between having “luck” and “feeling lucky” - The impact of setting sales quotas your reps aren't likely to hit - Thinking about salespeople as “corporate athletes” - Jeff's personal story of mental health awareness and advocacy   Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: - Start Talking PDF - Sales Gratitude Journal PDF Subscribe, listen, and rate/review the Customer Experience Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play or Google Podcasts, and find more episodes on our blog.
