The KLF, aka The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu were the best selling singles band in the world for a period in the 1990s. Their last single featured Tammy Wynette, the "First Lady of Country Music", in what would be her last chart topping hit. They were pioneers in sampling and house music, but you've likely never heard of them. Why? Because in 1992, after being honored at the Brit awards, they fired a machine gun full of blanks into the crowd, deleted their entire catalog, and resurfaced a short time later only to tour a film of the two members of the KLF, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, methodically lighting their last one million pounds on fire in an abandoned house in remote Scotland, then they disappeared back into the ether (not exactly, but it's a better story that way). The KLF are, whatever else they might be,  are an example of just what you can get away with when you get wrapped up in Discordianism, the real/fake religion that worships Eris, the goddess of chaos, invented the illuminati, and which some suspect had something to do with the assassination of JFK. It's all very silly. But most importantly, The KLF absolutely rule.  We need money to burn, and you can help us do that while getting access to our bonus series The Corkboard Bizarre, as well as our private Discord server where we do most of our online hanging out by supporting us on Patreon https://patreon.com/thenonsensebazaar

Mr. Modo label. Their early releases of a selection of industrial techno dubs and heavy sound system dubs from artists such as Napthali, Manasseh, Bim Sherman and Jah Warrior are long deleted and fetch high sums in private sales.   His cofounding of the Orb with Jimmy Cauty fell apart (problems with Jimmy's KLF project), but Alex continued to forge a massive career – later they kissed and made up.   Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the extraordinary story of Alex Paterson... With their unauthorized sampling, outrageous PR stunts, and signature ice cream van, the KLF set out to blow up the music industry. Pairing electric guitars with house beats, rapping with new age lyricism, and rave culture with the art world, the mysterious U.K. duo of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty were all about breaking rules and getting away with it.    They reached their crazy sonic peak when they teamed up with country icon Tammy Wynette for the 1992 dance-pop hit “Justified & Ancient,” which became an unlikely global smash. Their response to their newfound fame? Just as fans thought they'd arrived at the fictitious Mu Mu land at the center of the song, the group abandoned music altogether and vanished, deleting their entire catalog.   In this episode, we explore the KLF's wild rise and fall, from their doomed road trip to meet ABBA, to their infamous BRIT Awards performance in which Drummond took a machine gun and fired blanks into the audience, to their mind-boggling decision to film themselves burning their earnings—a shocking one million pounds.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A foolproof way to hit number 1 is what the Time Lords—AKA the JAMS, AKA the KLF—promised the readers of “The Manual,” their 1988 book. After all, they had just done it, with the insipid brilliance of their Gary Glitter Meets Dr. Who mashup “Doctorin' the Tardis.” And if they could do hack it, so could you, right? But if you did…would it even matter? Today, we're talking through the careers of Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond, following them on their remarkable journey into the dark heart of pop music as they moved from fake-rap pirates to stadium-ambient pioneers. And yet, even as the duo found fame, fortune and respect for their work, they discovered that all was (quite literally) ashes and dust, ultimately retreating into silence. Were they right? It's a beyond-wild true story that asks a terrifying question: What if music isn't enough?    Subscribe to our newsletter! Follow us on Twitter! People become writers for myriad reasons - novelist Max Porter suspects that for him the crucial spur was his fascination with Bekonscot model village, which he visited scores of times as a child. It was there that he discovered the pleasure and value of people watching at a life-size and miniature scale. In A Life In Miniatures he returns to Bekonscot to celebrate not just the care, craft and love that have gone into its construction, but also the opportunity it affords to create complicated stories out of the various people and scenes on show. He interrogates whether these places are necessarily escapist and reactionary or offer a more radical opportunity to critique society. He visits Jimmy Cauty of KLF fame to hear about the dystopian model village he has toured around the world in a shipping container and talks with Douglas Stuart, author of Shuggie Bain, about the miniature appearance of a miniature village that appears in that book. Max also speaks with academic Melinda Rabb about the rise of miniatures in 18th Century England - and how smart phones are keeping the tradition alive in various unexpected ways. Leadership Luminaries

In this truly fascinating interview Rupert Callender, founder of the Green Funeral Company, shares how he has applied the lessons and spirit of raves and punk to funerals. As a pioneer in the field, and breaking from tradition, Rupert began a new approach to funerals twenty years ago when he was inspired by the natural death movement which came on the heels of the earlier natural birth movement. Ru calls himself an undertaker (versus a funeral director) in that he undertakes to accompany and empower families to hold the most meaningful and personal of ceremonies and rituals. Towards the end Rupert makes the connection between the qualities and skills required of an undertaker and modern business leadership. Active listening, empathy, service to others vs self, “letting go of control”, trust and authenticity. “People are hungry for authenticity” says Rupert. And as he says, “Around death bullshit goes.” Rupert Callender set up The Green Funeral Company in 1999 in response to his own experiences around bereavement and ran it with his partner Claire up until the beginning of this year, 2021, when she left the business to take a break from death. They both brought their experiences within the rave and punk subcultures to their work, as well as some more unusual influences like the crop circle scene. They pioneered a strip backed and immersive way of working which threw away the formality and faux Victoriana of the modern traditional funeral. Their watchwords are honesty, transparency and participation, and this they bring to every funeral they do. Ru edited Writing on Death, and co-wrote the fifth edition of The Natural Death Handbook available directly from the Natural Death Centre, deliberately avoiding Amazon. They both did a TED X talk entitled Death, Grief, Ritual and Radical funerals, and are partners in an art memorialisation project with former KLF members Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty to build a 23 ft high pyramid in Toxteth with each brick containing cremated human remains. They have been described as “The best undertakers of all time by a country mile.” by The Good Funeral Guide.

The KLF aka The Jams aka The Timelords aka The K Foundation aka K2 Plant Hire aka The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu... it's complicated. Whatever name or weird mythology they happened to be operating under at the time, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty managed to top the UK pop charts in the early nineties with songs about love and ice-cream vans - often with plastic horns strapped to their heads. Then they turned their backs on the music industry, deleted their entire back catalogue and cremated £1 million of their own earnings on a remote Scottish island. Scroll forward 23 years and Drummond and Cauty re-emerge to announce they're building a pyramid in Liverpool out of bricks containing the cremated remains of just under 35,000 people. As more bricks are added to The People's Pyramid at the 2019 Toxteth Day of the Dead, Conor Garrett tries to work out what's going on... Produced and presented by Conor Garrett.

How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 1. Begin an inner alchemy to transcend the consensual reality tunnel and move from a state of fixation to a condition of mutability. Outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island, with only one journalist and their roadie-come-fixer, Gimpo, in attendance. Why? Why would they do that? How To Burn a Million Quid lays the story bare. A comic, surreal and fast moving adventure that sees Bill and Jimmy rise to the very top of the music industry, becoming the biggest selling music act in the UK before crashing out of the industry in spectacular fashion and heading toward the art world with the intention of creating similar mayhem. Inspired by a madcap theatrical genius and a cult novel, they blaze a trail that takes them to Sweden, the North Pole and the Sierra Nevada, via Northampton, before arriving finally on the Isle of Jura, with two suitcases containing a million quid. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. A sonic roller coaster featuring Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World's End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi-voice comedy performers. Bill Drummond: Paul Higgins Jimmy Cauty: Nicholas Burns Gimpo: Kevin Eldon Ken Campbell: Jeremy Stockwell Everyone else: Kate O’Sullivan, Polly Kemp, Ronnie Jhuttie and Niall Ashdown Original music by Somerset & Lewin Original music by MZYLKYPOP (Mick Somerset, David Lewin, Simon Lewinski, Rachel E, Flip Clegg and Thom Foote) Sound Design by Carl Scheleeshti Johnson Produced and Directed by Boz Temple-Morris Written by Sean Grundy and Cara Jennings A HOLY MOUNTAIN production for BBC Radio 4.

How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 2: Don’t do anything unless it’s heroic. Bill, Jimmy and Gimpo set off for Sweden in order to persuade Abba to let them sample their music. They’ll be OK with that. Won’t they? Just in case they say no, they’re taking all the records with them so that they can burn the vinyl before the legal deadline. Just in case. Besides, Bill has another plan for how to get onto Top of the Pops. Part two of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. How to Burn a Million Quid features Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World’s End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi voice comedy performers. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 3: Only a madman is absolutely sure. Pop stardom is going well, the KLF are a music industry sensation with a string of hits. An inspired collaboration with country music legend Tammy Wynette takes them to new heights. But is that enough, asks Bill, where’s the meaning? In the North Pole perhaps? Well that’s the conclusion he reaches and so off they go. Really. All this happened. Part three of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island.

Rule 4: Go it alone. At the height of their success the KLF can do no wrong. But they really want to. News of their forthcoming BRIT Award confirms their status as music industry establishment – exactly the thing they’re fighting against – and so they go in search of an idea so outrageous, so disgusting, that they would succeed in becoming outcast from the industry. At the BRIT Awards ceremony of 1992 they try out their idea… Part four of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island.

Rule 5: Know when to walk away. With the last gasp from the now dead sheep, the KLF leave the music industry. They now take their fight against the Illuminati to the art world, and the Turner Prize of 1994. They are about to have the most brilliant idea of all. Or the most stupid. You decide. Part five of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island.

Rule 6: Never ask for anyone’s blessing. Finally, having landed on the Isle of Jura, Bill, Jimmy, Gimpo, and one chosen witness check into the Jura hotel carrying two suitcases containing a million quid. They must pass the night before committing the act for which they have come. Burning one million pounds. Can they really go through with it? The final part of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. They were the best-selling singles band in the world. They had awards, credibility, commercial success and creative freedom. They deleted their records, erased themselves from musical history and burnt their last million pounds in a boathouse on the Isle of Jura. And they couldn’t say why. This is what KLF is about... Also known as the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu Furthermore known as the JAMMs the British number one hit as The Timelords The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way) is a 1988 book by The Timelords (Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty), better known as The KLF. In 1994 Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty took a million pounds to a deserted boathouse on the island of Jura and burnt it. The writer JMR Higgs looked at this event from a magickal perspective and came up with some interesting results. The story involves the world's first joke religion, the JFK assasination, Robert Anton Wilson, Alan Moore and a bunch of ideas collectively known as "Chaos Magick". This week is an entirely new interview, the previous lot have all been unedited bits from the Nick Margerrison archives. Topics discussed include Avengers and the oddness of its worldwide profits; The Amazing Spider-Man movie and its marketing scheme; Safety Not Guaranteed and a terrifying quasi-related Blair Witch Project story; our very favorite place on earth, The Waffle Window; Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty's The Manual: How to Have a Number One the Easy Way; Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, and much more.
