He co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope but walks out of the band just as they are about to break big and goes to work in a tearoom instead. He then forms The Wild Swans, the indie-band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, and Care with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, sharing a flat with a seventeen-year-old Courtney Love along the way. Marriage, fatherhood, tropical illness, and divorce follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed-guards, police escorts you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he does' t need to. Revolutionary Spirit is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards. It concludes with an exorcism of sorts as Simpson finally rids himself of the debilitating demon of psychological depression that has, from the age of nine, run like malware in the background of his life.

Misadventures in Music with Ian Prowse & Mick Ord

Our guest in Episode 27 is the musician, artistic director and all-round Liverpool legend, Jayne Casey.  She formed the short-lived but influential 70's band Big In Japan which boasted Ian Brodie, Holly Johnson, Bill Drummond and Budgie in its ranks. Then she founded Pink Military and Pink Industry before finding herself at the epicentre of the dance music explosion of the 90's as part of the CREAM empire.  Her two-volume autobiography is out in 2025 and if it's anything like this episode of Misadventure in Music with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord it will be a real firecracker. Enjoy

The dance group originally met as music promoters and DJs for the Mix Nightclub in Harrogate in the early 1990s. “The one where we say the sentence 'a really angry Egyptian who just wanted to fill the pyramids with piss'” Just one of the episode titles we brainstormed this week - others included: "The one where Rob admits he'd hide a dead pet to prevent not getting a shag" "The one where we add Anon Opin to the show which is like adding horse to your supermarket lasagne - it's a delicious meat but it's not what you paid for" "The one where we write new jingles, muck with the format and mention the KLF & Phil Collins" "The one where we share unsubstantiated gossip about a comedian so rich they have a butler" (Ok, maybe we'll use that one for the show graphic) It's hard doing episode names because it need to be both honest AND give a reason for you to listen. Anyway, it's a good episode, we think. The new sections are: 1. Confessions that most caught our eyes 2. Just ones that make me laugh 3. Highest rated 4. Anon_Opin bonus round 5. Best comments This replaces the idea of doing a top ten, so it's shorter more digestible chunks, that's the theory, or is it copy from a dog food advert? Regardless, here's our fav fesses from the show: "Each time I was at Coventry station, I'd buy a first class single to Birmingham International, which cost £2.10. Then make use of the free hot drinks and biscuits in the first class lounge. A lot cheaper than the station cafe. Lounge now closed, I'm probably responsible." "Dry liner here and on every new build, I used to piss in an empty bottle and put it in the wall cavity then board it up and I wasn't the only person to do this. So basically all the new builds around sports city, them nice apartments near Man City's ground are full of piss." "Whenever I stay away from home with work, which is about every other week, I try and book different hotels to my colleagues. That way I don't have to listen to work chat at breakfast and work chat at dinner time. I've had enough of that at work, oddly enough, you boring fucks." "Mrs had told me she wanted sex later. Chased kids to bed early and locked the house up before heading upstairs. Found the cat, that I'd not seen all day, was dead behind the couch. Knew this would upset the Mrs, so no sex. Ignored cat til the next day." "Me and the wife have been married for over 20 years and decided to try something new. Long story short, I ended up watching her having sex with a guy. Fast forward 6 months, he now lives with us and I sleep in the spare room." BYE AND SEE YOU NEXT WEEK YOU BUNCH OF HORRORS Rob ------- Producer: Will Fitzpatrick tempotalker.com

Paul Simpson's story is one wild ride and it's all revealed in his memoir titled Revolutionary Spirit: A Post-Punk Exorcism. Part memoir, part social history, Revolutionary Spirit is the poignant, often hilarious story of a cult Liverpool musician's scenic route to fame and artistic validation. If Morrissey was the Oscar Wilde of the 1980s indie scene, Simpson was its William Blake, a self destructive genius so lost in mystical visions of a new Arcadia that he couldn't meet the rent. Simpson's career goes back to 1976, when he finds himself at the birth of Liverpool's second great musical explosion. Along the way, he co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes, shares a flat with a teenage Courtney Love, and forms The Wild Swans, who burn bright and brief, in the process recording one of the all-time great cult hit singles, ‘Revolutionary Spirit'. Marriage, fatherhood, and tropical illness follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Eventually Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. In 2019, Elvis Presley Enterprises threatened to deconstruct Graceland and move it to Saudi Arabia, Tokyo, or whoever was the highest bidder. Artist, writer, KLF member and money burner - Bill Drummond - realised something had to be done. Bill's relationship with Northern Ireland began before his relationship with Elvis - but at some junction, these two relationships were bound to collide. It seems the Curfew Tower at the junction of the crossroads in the village of Cushendall in the Glens of Antrim is where this collision will be taking place. Producer: Conor Garrett

Paul Simpson's band The Wild Swans burned briefly and brightly in the flourishing Merseyside music scene of the early eighties.  They had one celebrated single in the indie charts but disbanded acrimoniously having failed to replicate the commercial success of their contemporaries like Teardrop Explodes, Echo and the Bunnymen, OMD, China Crisis, Dead Or Alive and  Wah! . They say the best stories can always be found in the corners and around the edges of life and Paul's book 'Revolutionary Spirit - A Post-Punk Exorcism' is a case in point. It's a classic of its kind...highly praised by book critics and musicians such as Will Sergent and Bill Drummond. Which won't come as a surprise to people who know him because Paul's a born storyteller.  'Revolutionary Spirit' tells us what it's really like to be in a band, but it's also an authentic slice of social history of life from a vibrant music scene with a seemingly endless list of larger-than-life characters. And plenty of genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. Paul's tells his story in the new episode of the Misadventures in Music podcast with Ian Prowse and Mick Ord.

The KLF, aka The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu were the best selling singles band in the world for a period in the 1990s. Their last single featured Tammy Wynette, the "First Lady of Country Music", in what would be her last chart topping hit. They were pioneers in sampling and house music, but you've likely never heard of them. Why? Because in 1992, after being honored at the Brit awards, they fired a machine gun full of blanks into the crowd, deleted their entire catalog, and resurfaced a short time later only to tour a film of the two members of the KLF, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, methodically lighting their last one million pounds on fire in an abandoned house in remote Scotland, then they disappeared back into the ether (not exactly, but it's a better story that way). The KLF are, whatever else they might be,  are an example of just what you can get away with when you get wrapped up in Discordianism, the real/fake religion that worships Eris, the goddess of chaos, invented the illuminati, and which some suspect had something to do with the assassination of JFK. It's all very silly. But most importantly, The KLF absolutely rule.  We need money to burn, and you can help us do that while getting access to our bonus series The Corkboard Bizarre, as well as our private Discord server where we do most of our online hanging out by supporting us on Patreon https://patreon.com/thenonsensebazaar

Today, my guest is Will Storr. Will is an award-winning writer, teacher, and consultant. He's the author of six critically acclaimed books, including the novels ‘The Hunger' and ‘The Howling of Killian Lone' and the Sunday Times bestseller ‘The Science of Storytelling.' He joined us today to talk about his book, ‘The Science of Storytelling," which is based on research in psychology and neuroscience. You cannot understand others unless you see things from their perspective. Good storytelling gives you much-needed character perspective and helps you understand what they are going through and why they are like that. Starting the conversation, we talk about how empathy could be created toward the character in the readers' minds. Will explains the reason for the readers to show empathy towards characters with flaws rather than perfect characters. They want a character who is learning from their mistakes and fighting for what they believe in.This podcast episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to understand the underlying psychology that drives compelling storytelling. [08.26] Storytelling – You have to get into their shoes to understand how they feel. Starting the conversation, Will shares how good storytelling can show the perspective of the characters.[15.00] Living the experience – The ability to make the reader live through the experience is the superpower of good storytelling.[25.47] The protagonist – Will explains the reason for readers to empathize with the protagonist in stories rather than repel them.[33.45] Status – We talk about how cruel people are toward powerful business people, celebrities, politicians, royalty, etc.[40.00] External and internal - In good storytelling, you can see how people change internally due to things that happen externally.[45.05] Wants vs. needs - People want a million things, but what they really want are three things: survival, connection, and status.[55.26] Human tribes - gossip controls human behavior within the human tribe.[01.05.55] Being a hero - Being a hero means that when something terrible comes your way, you get through it and grow.[01.11.38] Five-act structure - The five acts that show the full transformation of a characterResourcesConnect with WillWebsite - http://willstorr.com/LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/will-storr/ Twitter - twitter.com/wstorr Instagram - instagram.com/williamstorr/ Book by WillThe Science of Storytelling: Why Stories Make Us Human and How to Tell Them Better Book by Bill Drummond and Mark ManningBad Wisdom: The Lighthouse at the Top of the World

With their unauthorized sampling, outrageous PR stunts, and signature ice cream van, the KLF set out to blow up the music industry. Pairing electric guitars with house beats, rapping with new age lyricism, and rave culture with the art world, the mysterious U.K. duo of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty were all about breaking rules and getting away with it.    They reached their crazy sonic peak when they teamed up with country icon Tammy Wynette for the 1992 dance-pop hit “Justified & Ancient,” which became an unlikely global smash. Their response to their newfound fame? Just as fans thought they'd arrived at the fictitious Mu Mu land at the center of the song, the group abandoned music altogether and vanished, deleting their entire catalog.   In this episode, we explore the KLF's wild rise and fall, from their doomed road trip to meet ABBA, to their infamous BRIT Awards performance in which Drummond took a machine gun and fired blanks into the audience, to their mind-boggling decision to film themselves burning their earnings—a shocking one million pounds.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

2022 has been a stellar year for music books – you'll know this if you listen to the podcast regularly, I've interviewed the authors who've penned many of the best. And though I haven't quite got around to compiling my own favourites of the year list, somewhere towards the top of said list is Exit Stage Left… The Curious Afterlife of Popstars by Nick Duerden. Nick's book came out in paperback last week, it includes new interviews with the likes of – deep breath - Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray, and Justin Hawkins - so I thought it high time I got him on the podcast to talk about what happens when the bright light of fame fades… drug addiction, bankruptcy, depression and divorce… but truth be told, what Nick found out in researching the book, and what I found out here, wasn't anywhere near as miserable as you might imagine. A lot of what follows is inspiring stuff. Heads up; Some of the audio is a bit scratchy in this episode – Nick's wearing one of those headset microphones that makes him look a little bit like Madonna in the eighties. But I haven't had many people on the podcast more interesting than he this year. This was a conversation I really enjoyed and I hope you do too. Join the Substack!

A foolproof way to hit number 1 is what the Time Lords—AKA the JAMS, AKA the KLF—promised the readers of “The Manual,” their 1988 book. After all, they had just done it, with the insipid brilliance of their Gary Glitter Meets Dr. Who mashup “Doctorin' the Tardis.” And if they could do hack it, so could you, right? But if you did…would it even matter? Today, we're talking through the careers of Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond, following them on their remarkable journey into the dark heart of pop music as they moved from fake-rap pirates to stadium-ambient pioneers. And yet, even as the duo found fame, fortune and respect for their work, they discovered that all was (quite literally) ashes and dust, ultimately retreating into silence. Were they right? It's a beyond-wild true story that asks a terrifying question: What if music isn't enough?    Subscribe to our newsletter! Follow us on Twitter! For fans of music books from David Hepworth, Pete Paphides, Bob Stanley and Craig Brown, as well as thought-provoking human interest stories like Moondust by Andrew Smith, and books by Jon Ronson, Louis Theroux and Stuart Maconie. A quirky, thought-provoking look at the curious afterlife of pop stars. Nick Duerden has spent many years interviewing the most famous musicians on the planet. Without exception, they are at their most interesting when they've peaked, and when they are on their way down. In many ways, this is when these former idols are at their most heroic, too, because they reveal themselves not only to be humane and sensitive, but also still driven to create, to fulfil their lingering dreams, to refuse to live quietly. Some sustain themselves on the nostalgia circuit. Others continue to beaver away in the studio, no longer Abbey Road so much as the garden shed. The desire for adulation is a light that never goes out. We live in a culture obsessed by the notion of fame—the heedless pursuit of it, the almost obligatory subsequent fallout. But what's it like to actually achieve it, and what's it like when fame abruptly passes, and shifts, as it does, onto someone else? These are tales of heroin addiction, bankruptcy, depression, divorce—but also of optimism, a genuine love of the craft, humility and hope. All of which makes Exit Stage Left a fascinating, laugh-out-loud funny and often shocking look at what happens when the brightest of stars fall down to earth. Featuring brand-new interviews with the likes of: Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray and Justin Hawkins.

In this truly fascinating interview Rupert Callender, founder of the Green Funeral Company, shares how he has applied the lessons and spirit of raves and punk to funerals. As a pioneer in the field, and breaking from tradition, Rupert began a new approach to funerals twenty years ago when he was inspired by the natural death movement which came on the heels of the earlier natural birth movement. Ru calls himself an undertaker (versus a funeral director) in that he undertakes to accompany and empower families to hold the most meaningful and personal of ceremonies and rituals. Towards the end Rupert makes the connection between the qualities and skills required of an undertaker and modern business leadership. Active listening, empathy, service to others vs self, “letting go of control”, trust and authenticity. “People are hungry for authenticity” says Rupert. And as he says, “Around death bullshit goes.” Rupert Callender set up The Green Funeral Company in 1999 in response to his own experiences around bereavement and ran it with his partner Claire up until the beginning of this year, 2021, when she left the business to take a break from death. They both brought their experiences within the rave and punk subcultures to their work, as well as some more unusual influences like the crop circle scene. They pioneered a strip backed and immersive way of working which threw away the formality and faux Victoriana of the modern traditional funeral. Their watchwords are honesty, transparency and participation, and this they bring to every funeral they do. Ru edited Writing on Death, and co-wrote the fifth edition of The Natural Death Handbook available directly from the Natural Death Centre, deliberately avoiding Amazon. They both did a TED X talk entitled Death, Grief, Ritual and Radical funerals, and are partners in an art memorialisation project with former KLF members Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty to build a 23 ft high pyramid in Toxteth with each brick containing cremated human remains. They have been described as “The best undertakers of all time by a country mile.” by The Good Funeral Guide.

She's written 3 books. Her 2017 memoir called Woman of Substances in which she uses scientific research and theories and her own experiences, to investigates the paths that, in particular, women take into and out of addiction. Her latest book is a follow up to Woman of Substances and is called Everything Harder Than Everyone Else, which follows people doing the things that most couldn't, wouldn't or shouldn't. By delving into their extreme behaviour, there's a lot that us mere mortals can learn about the human condition. It's a rollercoaster read of experiences with a neuroscientis, performance artists, pornstar turned fighter, architect, BDSM Dom, bare knuckle fighter, wrestler and bodybuilder. We're gonna talk about what Jenny learnt, what we can all learn and how her immersive journalism has challenged her own mindset.I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. Van Halen too, obviously...  https://www.silentacademy.com/product/questions-book/   Young Southpaw: At the end of the intro you write that your hope is that ‘in accessing intuitive awareness, we are free to act with the full force of our nature, to create some things and to smash some things - completely.’   Andrew Shaw: Yeah  YS: Which reminded me of The Damned song ‘Smash It Up’. And then the first question you pose - ‘does light from the stars create loneliness’ - reminded me of that Lush song ‘Light From A Dead Star’. So in what ways is this book a mixtape?  AS: Aw, man. Again, like the Van Halen...absolutely. It is a mixtape, isn’t it? I mean is anything not a mixtape? When you really think about it...(laughs)  YS: But yeah I like the idea that this is a compilation, well in the truest sense it’s a compilation like a mixtape is a compilation, but it also has resonances and is your form of communication  AS: And you pass it to a girl to impress her  YS: Obviously  AS: Or an object of your affection, yeah. I mean why else would we do these things? I think a mixtape’s a pretty nice analogy. It’s a grab bag of ideas and observations from everywhere and then scramble them up and hope there’s some continuity that makes sense to anybody that spends time with it. Yeah. Something interesting along the way.   YS: I like that a lot. Yeah. I miss mixtapes, man. Luckily we have your book now.   AS: Oh yeah, I really miss mixtapes. The Spotify playlist doesn’t really cut it, does it?   YS: It really doesn’t. I mean, having two sides that you would structure accordingly.   AS: Right. And sticking the pencil in the middle to correct it.   YS: Funnily enough, that came up on the last episode of ETC. Something about pencils. I think the cassette was really the highest point of technology we needed. I don’t need everything going on these days. But to be able to listen to music in your car, I’m glad we got there.   AS: Yeah. And the unspooling. Just even the word ‘unspool’.

Is There an Echo in Here? A Podcast About Echo & the Bunnymen

In our first episode of the post-COVID world, we dive into some listener letters about language and the atlas adventures. Then the episode devolves as Courtney begrudgingly delves into one of the many topics she loathes to consider: record labels and the music biz. Fear not, though, Shane maintains a sunny disposition about the subject at hand and the duo pull through. Courtney manages to describe the riveting missed connection between Tony Wilson and Roger Eagle as they have a near miss at collaborating on a split-label record release, and Shane teases at the emerging shared destiny between Bill Drummond and the Bunnymen, while unwittingly becoming a fan of OMD and the Durutti Column in the process. Sorry for the delay in release. Things have turned upside down since the troubles began. We hope to make up for our tardiness with duration and depth of analysis.

The KLF aka The Jams aka The Timelords aka The K Foundation aka K2 Plant Hire aka The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu... it's complicated. Whatever name or weird mythology they happened to be operating under at the time, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty managed to top the UK pop charts in the early nineties with songs about love and ice-cream vans - often with plastic horns strapped to their heads. Then they turned their backs on the music industry, deleted their entire back catalogue and cremated £1 million of their own earnings on a remote Scottish island. Scroll forward 23 years and Drummond and Cauty re-emerge to announce they're building a pyramid in Liverpool out of bricks containing the cremated remains of just under 35,000 people. As more bricks are added to The People's Pyramid at the 2019 Toxteth Day of the Dead, Conor Garrett tries to work out what's going on... Produced and presented by Conor Garrett.

Auténticos abanderados del DO IT YOURSELF y acérrimos enemigos del copyright, su discografía es un auténtico ejercicio de libertad creativa y experimentación. Sonarán hits de THE JAMS, THE TIMELORDS, BILL DRUMMOND, JIMMY CAUTY, PET SHOP BOYS, DEPECHE MODE, EXTREME NOISE TERROR y, por supuesto, THE KLF.

How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 1. Begin an inner alchemy to transcend the consensual reality tunnel and move from a state of fixation to a condition of mutability. Outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island, with only one journalist and their roadie-come-fixer, Gimpo, in attendance. Why? Why would they do that? How To Burn a Million Quid lays the story bare. A comic, surreal and fast moving adventure that sees Bill and Jimmy rise to the very top of the music industry, becoming the biggest selling music act in the UK before crashing out of the industry in spectacular fashion and heading toward the art world with the intention of creating similar mayhem. Inspired by a madcap theatrical genius and a cult novel, they blaze a trail that takes them to Sweden, the North Pole and the Sierra Nevada, via Northampton, before arriving finally on the Isle of Jura, with two suitcases containing a million quid. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. A sonic roller coaster featuring Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World's End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi-voice comedy performers. Bill Drummond: Paul Higgins Jimmy Cauty: Nicholas Burns Gimpo: Kevin Eldon Ken Campbell: Jeremy Stockwell Everyone else: Kate O’Sullivan, Polly Kemp, Ronnie Jhuttie and Niall Ashdown Original music by Somerset & Lewin Original music by MZYLKYPOP (Mick Somerset, David Lewin, Simon Lewinski, Rachel E, Flip Clegg and Thom Foote) Sound Design by Carl Scheleeshti Johnson Produced and Directed by Boz Temple-Morris Written by Sean Grundy and Cara Jennings A HOLY MOUNTAIN production for BBC Radio 4.

How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 2: Don’t do anything unless it’s heroic. Bill, Jimmy and Gimpo set off for Sweden in order to persuade Abba to let them sample their music. They’ll be OK with that. Won’t they? Just in case they say no, they’re taking all the records with them so that they can burn the vinyl before the legal deadline. Just in case. Besides, Bill has another plan for how to get onto Top of the Pops. Part two of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. How to Burn a Million Quid features Paul Higgins (The Thick of It, Line of Duty) as Bill Drummond, Nicholas Burns (Nathan Barley, The World’s End) as Jimmy Cauty, with Kevin Eldon as Gimpo, Jeremy Stockwell as Ken Campbell and an outstanding cast of multi voice comedy performers. Bill Drummond: Paul Higgins Jimmy Cauty: Nicholas Burns Gimpo: Kevin Eldon Ken Campbell: Jeremy Stockwell Everyone else: Kate O’Sullivan, Polly Kemp, Ronnie Jhuttie and Niall Ashdown Original music by Somerset & Lewin Original music by MZYLKYPOP (Mick Somerset, David Lewin, Simon Lewinski, Rachel E, Flip Clegg and Thom Foote) Sound Design by Carl Scheleeshti Johnson Produced and Directed by Boz Temple-Morris Written by Sean Grundy and Cara Jennings A HOLY MOUNTAIN production for BBC Radio 4.

How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 3: Only a madman is absolutely sure. Pop stardom is going well, the KLF are a music industry sensation with a string of hits. An inspired collaboration with country music legend Tammy Wynette takes them to new heights. But is that enough, asks Bill, where’s the meaning? In the North Pole perhaps? Well that’s the conclusion he reaches and so off they go. Really. All this happened. Part three of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 4: Go it alone. At the height of their success the KLF can do no wrong. But they really want to. News of their forthcoming BRIT Award confirms their status as music industry establishment – exactly the thing they’re fighting against – and so they go in search of an idea so outrageous, so disgusting, that they would succeed in becoming outcast from the industry. At the BRIT Awards ceremony of 1992 they try out their idea… Part four of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 5: Know when to walk away. With the last gasp from the now dead sheep, the KLF leave the music industry. They now take their fight against the Illuminati to the art world, and the Turner Prize of 1994. They are about to have the most brilliant idea of all. Or the most stupid. You decide. Part five of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. How To Burn A Million Quid

Rule 6: Never ask for anyone’s blessing. Finally, having landed on the Isle of Jura, Bill, Jimmy, Gimpo, and one chosen witness check into the Jura hotel carrying two suitcases containing a million quid. They must pass the night before committing the act for which they have come. Burning one million pounds. Can they really go through with it? The final part of the outrageous comedy drama telling the true story of the chart-topping pop duo known as KLF, who, in 1994, burned £1 million in cash on a remote Scottish Island. It was their mission to cause chaos. And they did. Bill Drummond is many things. As well as an artist, a writer and former pop-star - he's the owner of an old curfew tower in Northern Ireland which he runs as an artists' residency. Last year some poets from Belfast's Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry stayed there and Bill published their collected work in a little black book called The Curfew Tower is Many Things. Except for a poem the award-winning Belfast poet Stephen Sexton wrote. Apparently that one went missing. So Bill has left two pages blank in the book for Stephen to fill in with poetry as they drive through all of Ireland's 32 counties in 5 days in a white Ford Transit hire-van, giving out copies as they go. But what exactly is driving Bill Drummond? Producer Conor Garrett is there to find out. As they cross the Irish border and over each county boundary, Conor is becoming increasingly concerned he may not have a good enough story for his radio programme. It's a problem further complicated by the fact Bill won't talk about his chart-topping '90s pop band who once famously set fire to a very large pile of their own cash. Then, when a narrative arc does eventually develop, Conor can't be sure how authentic it is. And what's all this stuff about eels? Producer: Conor Garrett.

The dynamic duo fall even further down a wormhole of implausible chat with subjects including why Mods are no good at fighting with pirates at sea, producer Seb's convincing impression of Ayrton Senna when he's behind the wheel, our best Persuader to date, the return of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty and the latest updates on Barry The Barber, before asking, 'Where have all the negative reviews gone?' All of today's music is drawn from the length and breadth of our recent Albums Of The Year So Far chart including bangers from Bargou08, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Endon, Richard Dawson, SZA, Harriet Brown, Algiers and British Sea Power.

My first brand new podcast in nearly seven months. Where does the time go? They say patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait and I think this one was worth waiting for. A good blend of the familiar and the not-so-familiar; some things you may remember and some you've long since forgotten or maybe never heard in your entire life. Before I get to a few band notes, I want to mention that I have now upgraded my account back to a Pro account. I just couldn't bear the thought that people were actually making a point of coming to this site to listen to the music only to be told by a pre-recorded message that they could not because of bandwidth limitations. What does that mean for you all? It means no more running out of bandwidth two days after I post a new episode. With apologies to the Pet Shop Boys it means more "opportunities" to listen and to download when you have time. It means more storage, so I don't have to delete the audio from an older podcast just to post a new one. (You may have already noticed I've re-posted some of the more recent back-catalog episodes). Over time, I will add more of them. For long-time listeners, it's a chance to re-visit some of the older stuff from "back in the day". For newer listeners, it will be like a glut of new podcasts to check out. I also want to note that I've removed the audio for my previous episode (CRC #42) as the recording levels were all over the map and I didn't think the quality was up to snuff. Perhaps 5 or 6 years ago, it would have been okay, I suppose, but even in light of the cheap mixer and free recording software I use to assemble these 'casts, I think this podcast has come too far now and demands a higher level of quality. So, I may re-record that one at a future date. At that point, I'll re-post. Same for back-catalog items. The really good ones, I'll re-post. The ones that could use a little work will most likely be re-recorded and re-posted as a "reboot" episode. All in all, thank you all again for tuning in. Have a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2017! Now on to the bands ... If you've been a follower of this podcast since the beginning and you've clung to the belief that, against all probability, the thrash metal band, Slayer, would somehow make its presence felt at some point then your patience has finally been rewarded. And you should book your ticket to Vegas immediately. Taking a riff from the group's tune, "War Ensemble", "I Want You" was one of four Top-25 hits for Jez Willis and Tim Garbutt on Utah Saints' self-titled debut. The duo were at the pioneering edge of sampling, also grabbing a snippet of Kate Bush from her track Cloudbusting for the song "Something Good" and a soundbite from the inimitable Annie Lennox from her song "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" for the track "What Can You Do For Me". Called "the first true Stadium House band" by Bill Drummond of The KLF, Utah Saints were one of the first rave acts to play live and one I had the good fortune to see on the same bill with The Shamen in the early 90s during the rave culture explosion. And let me tell you: it was quite a show ... probably. I first heard "Salvation" by The Hood sometime in 1989 while in college. A guy who lived down the hall from me had a version of it on an old mix tape. I really liked the track and was pleased as punch when the first of many Razormaid! discs from my nascent subscription showed up in the mail containing a mix of that song. It is a portion of that 10+ minute version that appears here. I would soon come across a movie soundtrack of the same name while sifting through record bins at a local indie shop. New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, The Hood, hip-hop producer extraordinaire Arthur Baker and others appeared on the album, so I purchased it. While I've listened to the song "Salvation" umpteen times over the years, I did not know much about the band or its members. To this day, I still don't. I spent the better part of an hour trying to find information on the group, but mostly found song credits and track listings. Eventually, I did find a tiny bit of info on a website called The Lost Turntable. The info was posted by an Arthur Baker and a John Hood respectively, both of whom I can only assume to be the real article. "the hood- is john hood, a legendary nyc party promoter-doorman,who is also quite a good writer. he was signed for a short time on the sire label and is active on the club scene in south beach, miami, florida" "Wow! Yeah, that The Hood track is indeed me: John Hood. (Thanks AB!) And I'm delighted to find it posted. In fact, till right now I never even had an MP3 of the song! So if no one minds, I'll post this, save this, and send this around. Nice to find Salvation!" If anyone knows anything more about The Hood, I would LOVE to get a one-sheet or press kit or bio on them. Speaking of bands I don't know much about, Gruesome Twosome would qualify as well. Sort of a one-off project for founders Samy Birnbach from Minimal Compact (aka Lord Solomon Pearbrook) and Norwegian producer Per Martinsen, who had been recording under the name Syamese, "Hallucination Generation" is the only official single from the group and was released in 1989. A cult classic in its own right, the song sort of bridges the gap between traditional industrial dance music and the bourgeoning New Beat music scene that was starting to take hold at the time. Birnbach and Martinsen would later collaborate with the likes of Bertrand Burgalat, Thrash from The Orb, Paul Kendall and Fortran 5 to eventually release a full-length album called Candy From Strangers, which was released in 1993. Birnbach currently releases material under the DJ Morpheus moniker, having once worked with Colin Newman from Wire for a project called Oracle, while Martinsen performs as Mental Overdrive. While it's probably not the best analogy as they employed very different musical styles, Ultravox is much like the band Genesis in the sense that they have two distinct timelines, led by two distinctly different front men. And much like one could argue Peter Gabriel represented the true vision for Genesis, there is no denying that Phil Collins took the band to massive commercial heights and is probably remembered more readily as the face of the group. Similarly, one could argue that while John Foxx may have been the driving force behind Ultravox during their formative years, it was Midge Ure, who took over after Foxx left for a solo career, that kept the band from imploding and pushed them further into the mainstream and to massive success in the UK. With 7 Top-10 albums and 17 Top-10 singles, U-Vox, like many other bands of the day, took their cue from the glam rock outfits that came before such as Neu! In fact, early on Ultravox was known as Ultravox! (with an exclamation point) in deference to Neu! The first album with the classic line-up of Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann and Chris Cross would be the amazing Vienna, which marked a very different direction for the group. Produced by long-time Kraftwerk producer Conny Plank, the album included the title track, which would reach #2 in the UK and would be the highest charted song for the band. (John Lennon's "Woman" and "Shaddap You Face" by Joe Dolce would both keep the song from reaching #1). And while the 1982 album Quartet, produced by George Martin, would be the best-selling US album for U-Vox, the band would not again reach the level of critical success they found with Vienna. The song in this podcast is the 12" version of "We Came to Dance", the final single from Ultravox's sixth studio album, Quartet, released on April 18, 1983. The single reached #18 on the UK charts and was the last of seven consecutive top-20 singles for the band. This being the Christmas season, I would be derelict not to mention that Midge Ure also co-wrote (with Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats fame) and produced the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. Last but not least, I want to mention "State Of The Nation" by New Order. Though it reached #1 on the UK Indie Singles Chart and #30 on the UK Singles chart in 1986, the song is probably not a favorite of the majority of New Order fans. I would wager if every NO devotee were to compile a list of his or her Top 10 songs, it would probably appear in less than 5% of those lists. Still, the track is a great one even if only for the fact that it's one of the few NO songs whose title actually appears within the lyrics and/or chorus of the song. As most die-hard fans know, the titles of most NO tunes have little or no relevance to the subject matter being discussed. "Shellshock", "Regret", "Touched By The Hand Of God" and "Confusion" are a few songs I can think of off the top of my head that go against that grain. While the song did not appear on the album, Brotherhood, which was released around this time, both the remix version appearing here and the B-side called "Shame Of The Nation", which was produced by John Robie, appear on the Substance compilation, released in 1987. That will do it for this epidsode. I've got my next podcast ready to record. As soon as I find some time, I'll do just that. Happy Listening!

In 1994 Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty took a million pounds to a deserted boathouse on the island of Jura and burnt it. The writer JMR Higgs looked at this event from a magickal perspective and came up with some interesting results. The story involves the world's first joke religion, the JFK assasination, Robert Anton Wilson, Alan Moore and a bunch of ideas collectively known as "Chaos Magick". This week is an entirely new interview, the previous lot have all been unedited bits from the Nick Margerrison archives. In the summer of 1990, Operation Blackbird was launched, to investigate the curious (and then growing) appearances of Crop Circles across the world. These mysterious, geometric shapes would appear in crops, prompting some to claim UFOs were at work, and others to cry 'hoax'.On the second night of Operation Blackbird, researchers were excited to see a crop circle emerge…but when they examined closer, the plot thickened. They found strange circular boardgame boards, in the centre of every circle, and then the next day, one of the researchers received a letter from the notorious UK dance band…the KLF.Join me as I try to get to the bottom of this curious case, which involved me interviewing original witnesses, and gaining access to a handwritten letter supposedly by KLF front man, Bill Drummond.Visit us online at itsourcuriouspast.comSpecial Thank you for those that helped with this Episode:Colin Andrews played by David StephensonGeorge (Merlin) Vernon played by Owen StatonHelp support our show through Patreon:Peter Laws | creating podcasts, immersive audio, video and more! | PatreonFind us on all podcasting platforms:Our Curious PastThank you!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
