In this episode, Phil Rickaby talks with the outstanding Deborah Drakeford and unpacking the Canadian premiere of Joanna Murray-Smith's "Rockabye." From the first costume fitting that sets the stage for character metamorphosis to the electric anticipation of performing an original rock anthem, this episode is a tribute to the craft. The camaraderie within the Actors Repertory Company, nurtured by director Rob Kempson is palpable as Deborah recounts the collective effort in breathing life into "Rockabye." This is a toast to the ensemble's magic and her own evolution as resident artist and co-artistic producer with ARC. The conversation also turns to the resilience of actors amid the pandemic, sharing her own tussle with COVID-19 that brought unexpected twists to a production in Sudbury. The episode wraps with a heartwarming glimpse into the enduring marriage Deborah and her husband Oliver Dennis, as they juggle the scales of professional ambition with the weight of family life. Their story is a masterclass in harmony, a dance of mutual support and understanding that keeps the show going, long after the applause fades. Regina Botros reviews Julia at the Sydney theatre Company at the Sydney Opera House.     JULIA By Joanna Murray-Smith Directed by Sarah Goodes Not now, not ever In 2012, Australia's first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, gave a speech that sent shockwaves around the world.  Now, ten years later, one of Australia's most esteemed and celebrated playwrights, Joanna Murray-Smith, brings the human story behind that speech to the stage. Julia is an extraordinary new play that will see the glorious Justine Clarke (Children of the Sun) embody the life and career that led to the ‘misogyny speech', in a phenomenal performance directed by Helpmann Award-winner Sarah Goodes (The Children).  This is both an intimate and compelling insight into the person behind the public mask, and a reflection on the experience of women in contemporary politics. Combining genuine excerpts from Gillard's speech with Murray-Smith's incredible dramatic imagination this play is also a thrilling coming together of history and art. Around the world, we are seeing the most profound rollbacks to women's rights legislation in two generations. At the same time, there have been encouraging strides forward in the representation of women in positions of power, both at home and abroad. In this climate, Julia is a rousing and energising reminder of where we've come from and an empowering imagining of the challenges we've yet to face. Julia is the proud recipient of the Blake Beckett Trust Female Playwrights' and Female Directors' Award.

“All your nerve endings have to be alive to life .. you have to be prepared to plumb your own history and experiences that are often difficult. It's just what it takes. The gold is about very raw authentic feelings, that's the key to writing interestingly.. only then will the audience come on the ride with you.” Renowned playwright novelist and screenwriter Joanna Murray Smith is described as the foremost “Australian playwright” with half of all Australian plays performed overseas being written by her.Her plays including Honour, Rapture Bombshells, Nightfall Redemption, Love Child and Songs For Nobodies have been performed around the world in the US, the UK, Asia on Broadway the West End and at the Royal National Theatre in London.Yet her greatest fear is that she will disappoint.“I'm always terrified I will let down the actors, audiences or theatre company .. that's my nightmare”Many of her plays feature flawed, fiesty, fragile and ferocious women who cry, fly, fight even sing their way through life's challenges. Her play “Honour” was modelled on so many wise dignified women. She knew beautiful mothers and wives who were left by their husbands and found themselves alone at 60 .. it explores their strength and also how much they'd been complicit in their own invisibility. Her next play “Berlin” hopefully released soon at the MTC is her first play that explores Jewish themes. “It explores crazy infatuation of youth  and forbidden love."While researching she went to Auchwitz on her own to digest and process the horror of history and it was life changing. Always a pleasure to speak to this vivacious, articulate and engaging writer- So grab a tea, or a G & T and let's get intimate DebCREDITS:Executive Producer & host: Deborah Blashki-Marks (mindfilmandpublishing.com.au) Podcast Audio Producer:Sophie Jackson (Soundstreet.com.au) Artwork:Sam Moses (www.samanthamoses.com)Original music:Jonah OrbachVoice Recording:Matia Marks Design:Rachel Mcarthy (rachelmccarthy@live.com.au)

Joanna Murray-Smith is a world-renowned playwright, novelist and screenwriter. In this first episode of Backstories, Joanna talks about her life growing up and what influenced her journey into the arts; from her mother taking her to shows as a child or listening to family friends in boozy political conversations. Growing up, Joanna says she was never told that she couldn’t be a writer or that it’s a “hard life” or “most people fail”, instead she said the silence of the people around her, spoke volumes. “It was a perfectly rationale and reasonable expectation, that if you had that imaginative flourish, you could pursue it as a means to living. “When I look back now I can see that the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle were kind of in place to lead me to playwrighting, but it took me a long time to see that.” Listeners will get an insight into how Jo writes and the backstory to her play ‘Berlin’. If you know someone who might like this podcast, please share it with them. Word of mouth is the best way we can get out there into the world.
