Michael Shermer interviews Jon Mills, a psychoanalyst and philosopher, on a variety of topics, including the evolution of psychoanalysis, the dynamics of therapeutic relationships, and the psychological roots of aggression and trauma. Mills explains Freud's lasting influence, the moral implications of aggression, and the role violence plays in society. The conversation also explores how trauma affects individuals and families across generations and the difficulty of understanding human behavior when faced with global challenges. The discussion extends to broader issues such as individuality, the struggles faced by modern youth, and the evolution of belief in God. Shermer and Mills discuss how technology impacts mental health and the pursuit of spirituality without relying on traditional religion. Jon Mills, PsyD, PhD, ABPP, is a philosopher, psychoanalyst, and clinical psychologist. His two latest books are Inventing God: Psychology of Belief and the Rise of Secular Spirituality, and End of the World: Civilization and its Fate.

SOUL Purpose ~ with Caroline Carey ~ a journey of human-soul stories that lead to entrepreneurial offerings

This is a journey from early childhood and a love of cars to now creating some spectacular works of art, all out of metal. Jon Mills has been fabricating works in steel for over 40 years. His early years were spent producing sculpture and automata for speculative exhibitions and galleries, the last 15 years seeing more and more public commissions. With a preference for commissions which have a functional element, the work has included bridges, clock-towers and way-markers as well as many decorative gates & railings for civic buildings and schools.Very often the local community (normally a school group but not always) is involved in the process. If practical, schoolchildren have been bussed to his workshop and had hands-on experience of metalworking, including plasma-cutting, forging and (the favourite), quenching the hot work in a bucket of water. All work is carried out in his own workshop, in Brighton, East Sussex, although he will often draw specific designs to be sub-contracted out for laser cutting, which he will then manipulate and forge/ fabricate/weld together, prior to delivery to finishers for protective coatings etc. Take a look at some of Jons fascinating projects https://www.metaljon.com/Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/metaljon_mills/Do you enjoy listening to these podcasts? You might like to support their ongoing journey, by contributing £5 per month and be part of our community. Middle Earth Medicine has a platform for ongoing connections, support and wellbeing. Join the intellectual odyssey with Professor Jon Mills as we unravel the complex fabric of our world's future in "The End of the World:  Civilization and its Fate." Prepare to be challenged and enlightened as we navigate through a labyrinth of existential crises, from climate cataclysms to the ominous growth of global aggression. With a clear-eyed examination of the global bystander effect, our conversation with the accomplished Canadian philosopher and psychoanalyst unveils the paradoxes and inertia miring humanity's response to these urgent threats. We scrutinize the curious global energy decisions that hinder progress and amplify the dangers looming over civilization's horizon.Venture deeper into the societal fissures with us as we dissect the spike in divisiveness, the troubling resurgence of anti-Semitism, and the disintegration of civil discourse. Professor Mills casts a critical eye on the authoritarian undertones of testimonial epistemology and its impact across the ideological divide, spotlighting the perilous consequences of relegating empirical evidence to the backseat. We traverse the landscape of contemporary social dynamics, exposing the psychological undercurrents that drive the ever-present temptations of tribalism and the worrying potential for global conflict. The tapestry of our discussion weaves together the threads of authoritarian leanings, Cluster B personality trends, and the societal implications of developmental trauma. As our conversation culminates, we emerge with a blueprint for societal healing, underscored by Professor Mills' insights into the salve of tolerance and mutual recognition. We probe the virtues essential for constructing a global community marked by harmony rather than hostility. This episode is a clarion call to those who envision a world where divergent views can coexist peacefully, for listeners seeking a beacon amidst the discord. Professor Mills leaves us not with a sense of despair but with a call to action, championing the virtues of open-mindedness and civility as the cornerstones of a resilient, empathetic society. In Debating Relational Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2020), Jon Mills provides an historical record of the debates that had taken place for nearly two decades on his critique of the relational school, including responses from his critics. Since he initiated his critique, relational psychoanalysis has become an international phenomenon with proponents worldwide. This book hopes that further dialogue may not only lead to conciliation, but more optimistically, that relational theory may be inspired to improve upon its theoretical edifice, both conceptually and clinically, as well as develop technical parameters to praxis that help guide and train new clinicians to sharpen their own theoretical orientation and therapeutic efficacy. Because of the public exchanges in writing and at professional symposiums, these debates have historical significance in the development of the psychoanalytic movement as a whole simply due to their contentiousness and proclivity to question cherished assumptions, both old and new. In presenting this collection of his work, and those responses of his critics, Mills argues that psychoanalysis may only advance through critique and creative refinement, and this requires a deconstructive praxis within the relational school itself. Debating Relational Psychoanalysis will be of interest to psychoanalysts of all orientations, psychotherapists, mental health workers, psychoanalytic historians, philosophical psychologists, and the broad disciplines of humanistic, phenomenological, existential, and analytical psychology. Jon Mills, PsyD, PhD, ABPP is a philosopher, psychoanalyst, and clinical psychologist. He is a faculty member in the postgraduate programs in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, Adelphi University, emeritus professor of psychology and psychoanalysis, Adler Graduate Professional School, and runs a mental health corporation in Ontario, Canada. If you saw Kendra Stanley Mills’ photographs you’d be impressed but you would have no idea of the story of how this incredible artist found her place behind a camera lens.Kendra is a combination of extreme humility and equally big artistic talent. It might have something to with the way she was raised, having spent some time in rural Kentucky as a kid with her “hippie, Mother Earth News” parents living in a one room house with no running water and no toilet, that instilled in Kendra an ingenuity and a stubborn persistence to stay with things and make due with what’s there. As Kendra says, “I’m certain that the way I grew up has a direct correlation to why I became a photographer. My childhood was part “Little House on the Prairie” and part Woodstock. I had an outhouse, no running water, a milk cow, a wood cook stove and no television until middle school...We told stories, listened to old vinyl records, had chores (a lot of chores!) and more adventures than I can count.”She has such fondness for those times that she and her husband Jon Mills moved the log cabin she lived in in Kentucky as a little girl to the property they live on in Montague, MI. From these humble beginnings Kendra eventually became a photojournalist for the Muskegon (Michigan) Chronicle and today is a portrait photographer of unique talent. Kendra’s photographs are infused with artistic elements, lines, geometry while still putting her subjects in the spotlight. The geometric elements are done so well and so deliberately yet so subtly they become elegant backdrops that enhance images rather than overpower. Our interview was conducted last February pre-coronavirus at her studio office in North Muskegon, the same town where she go her start as an intern for the Muskegon Chronicle. You might hear some hissing—that’s the steam running through the pipes that heated the building. Kendra won the internship just out of college even though as she recounts, “the editors thought others had more talent” but loved that she had a kind of courage. Over the course of her 13 years as a photojournalist Kendra refined a personal style as a newspaper photographer. Sometimes it was uncomfortable documenting the tragedies and hardships of her subject about which the reporters were writing. Kendra recounts the irony of her current business as a portrait photographer because when she started her editor told her her portraits were the weakest work she turned in. “So he made me go out and do every portrait photo assignment I could get so I could get better,” she says.In addition portrait photography where she shoots weddings, families and individual portraits, Kendra works as a full-time photographer for Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. Kendra also explores some aspects of the business of being a photographer and shares a couple important tips for anyone looking to create a business out of their creative endeavors. Hope you enjoy today's conversation with Kendra. Dr. Jon Mills is back and in this episode we discuss a paper that talks about self stigmatization and the "why try" effect.Self-stigma and the “why try” effect: impact on life goals and evidence-based practiceshttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2694098/Many individuals with mental illnesses are troubled by self-stigma and the subsequent processes that accompany this stigma: low self-esteem and self-efficacy. “Why try” is the overarching phenomenon of interest here, encompassing self-stigma, mediating processes, and their effect on goal-related behavior. In this paper, the literature that explains “why try” is reviewed, with special focus on social psychological models. Self-stigma comprises three steps: awareness of the stereotype, agreement with it, and applying it to one’s self. As a result of these processes, people suffer reduced self-esteem and self-efficacy. People are dissuaded from pursuing the kind of opportunities that are fundamental to achieving life goals because of diminished self-esteem and self-efficacy. People may also avoid accessing and using evidence-based practices that help achieve these goals. The effects of self-stigma and the “why try” effect can be diminished by services that promote consumer empowerment.

There are many fronts in the argument against the existence of a god or gods and veracity of religious narratives. Some familiar approaches are to critique the philosophical underpinnings of religious ideology or to make a case from the perspective of scientific evidence and the physical laws of reality. Inventing God: Psychology of Belief and the Rise of Secular Spirituality (Routledge, 2016), written by Dr. Jon Mills, argues from the perspective of psychology and posits that god is a psychological creation signifying ultimate ideality. In other words, He is the ultimate wish fulfillment, the forgiving all-powerful father you always wanted, the absolution of all your fears, the antidote to death. Mills writes that the conception of god is the manifestation of humanity's denial and response to natural deprivation. He promotes secular humanism and a personal search for the numinous as a positive, life-affirming alternative. Dr. Jon Mills is a philosopher, psychoanalyst, active clinical psychologist, as well as Professor of Psychology & Psychoanalysis at the Adler Graduate Professional School in Toronto. In this interview, Canadian philosopher, psychologist, and psychoanalyst Jon Mills speaks with us about his book Conundrums: A Critique of Contemporary Psychoanalysiss (Routledge, 2011). In the book he discusses current tenets in North American psychoanalytic thinking and practice that he finds to be concerning and problematic. Focusing on the relational and intersubjective turn currently popular in the field, he articulates what he believes are the faulty ways in which some contemporary analytic thinkers make use of philosophy and, therein, particularly post-modernism. Though relationally influenced himself, in that he is drawn towards a more flexible, less removed approach in the consulting room, he questions the denigration of the drives and what appears to be a seeming disinterest in life before the acquisition of language. Mills wonders about the ways in which ideas associated with post-modernism and the practice of a psychoanalytic hermeneutics have been used to drum thinking about the body out of psychoanalysis and what impact that has on our clinical encounters. In this interview the discussion ranges from the problem of therapeutic excess via analytic self-disclosure to the fate of the drives in relational and intersubjective thinking to the emphasis on meaning-making, and the role of philosophy in psychoanalysis. Also discussed are psychoanalytic politics, analytic training, and the relational critique of the analyst's authority. While in this interview Dr. Mills asks some hard questions, particularly of the relational approach, and particularly its philosophical underpinnings, he does so gently and with great seriousness.
