How do you remake a classic? Well in the case of trying to bring back the LEGENDARY Private Detective John Shaft of the 1971 Gordon Parks cult hit starring Richard Roundtree, acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice) teamed with acclaimed writer Richard Writer (The Color of Money, Clockers) to....NOT remake it, they decided to "re-imagine" the character as a former NYPD cop trying to exact justice in late '90's New York City. Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson now plays the titular character with Roundtree returning to play his uncle. This time around, Shaft is determined to bring justice for the racially-charged murder of an innocent young man at a NYC club. The murderer is played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), the witness whom Shaft has to find is played by Oscar-nominee Toni Colette (The Sixth Sense).....and beyond that, Shaft also has to combat corrupt local cops PLUS local drug kingpin Peoples Hernandez played by Oscar-nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). Throw in some high-octane action, Busta Rhymes as Shaft's driver, AND....the iconic Oscar-winning theme song from Isaac Hayes and what do you get? Besides several Oscar nominees, you happen to get a surprisingly enjoyable (and very timely) action thriller to kick off Black History Month. Can you dig it? :) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

In this weeks episode of the world's-fastest-movie-review podcast Jackson and Mike review TWO new films!!! First “THELMA” a 93-year-old grandmother who loses $10,000 to a con artist on the phone. With help from a friend and his motorized scooter, she soon embarks on a treacherous journey across Los Angeles to reclaim what was taken from her. Starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey and Clark Gregg,. Then a quick review of “THE EXORCISM”. A troubled actor begins to unravel while shooting a horror film. His estranged daughter wonders if he's slipping back into his past addictions or if there's something more sinister at play. Starring Sam Worthington, Russell Crowe, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and David Hyde Pierce.
Writer / Director Josh Margolin is here to discuss turning June Squibb into a nonagenarian action star in Thelma, parental caretaking dynamics, and high speed mobility scooter chases. More about Thelma: The feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, THELMA is a poignant action-comedy that gives veteran Oscar® nominee June Squibb (NEBRASKA and star of Scarlett Johansson's upcoming directorial debut ELEANOR THE GREAT) her first leading role and features the final performance of trailblazing actor Richard Roundtree (SHAFT). Squibb, who did many of her own stunts in the film, plays Thelma Post, a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson (The White Lotus' Fred Hechinger) and sets out on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles, accompanied by an aging friend (Roundtree) and his motorized scooter, to reclaim what was taken from her. Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, and Malcolm McDowell also star. Inspired by a real-life experience of Margolin's own grandmother, THELMA puts a clever spin on movies like MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business – despite what her daughter Gail (Posey), son-in-law Alan (Gregg), or grandson Danny might believe More about Josh Margolin: Josh Margolin is a writer, director, editor and actor from Los Angeles. He co-wrote, edited and starred in the absurdist horror-comedy DEEP MURDER, which premiered at the LA Film Festival in 2018 and ran theatrically before streaming on Paramount+. Previously, Josh co-created the digital series MY BOYFRIEND IS A ROBOT for Freeform, and has developed projects with TBS, Sony Pictures Television, Olive Bridge and Paul Feig's Powderkeg. He performed over 100 shows with One Night Stand: An Improvised Musical, which was produced by Marc Platt and had sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as appearances in the The New York Musical Theater Festival and a limited run in Los Angeles. THELMA is Josh's feature directorial debut. Thelma is in theaters now. Thelma Unleashed: June Squibb and Richard Roundtree's Epic Final Ride – A Tale of Grit, Humor, and Defiance at 93, Interview with “Thelma” writer-director Josh Margolin The Not Old Better Show Interview Series Welcome to a special episode of the Not Old Better Show, sponsored by MDHearing and Prolon. where we dive into the poignant action-comedy film that is taking audiences by storm: "Thelma." This feature film directorial debut from our guest today Josh Margolin and showcases the incredible talents of veteran Oscar® nominee June Squibb, in her first leading role, and the legendary Richard Roundtree, in his final performance. "Thelma" is not just a film; it's a celebration of resilience, humor, and the unyielding spirit of the elderly. Thelma opens world wide on June 21 In "Thelma," June Squibb brings to life a feisty 93-year-old grandmother, Thelma Post, who finds herself the victim of a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, played by Fred Hechinger from "The White Lotus." Refusing to be seen as helpless, Thelma embarks on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles to reclaim her stolen $10,000. Her journey is hilariously action-packed and heartwarming, as she enlists the help of her old friend Ben, portrayed by the iconic Richard Roundtree. Together, they navigate the city on a motorized scooter, facing obstacles that would challenge even the likes of Ethan Hunt from "Mission: Impossible." This film, inspired by a real-life incident involving Margolin's own grandmother, cleverly adapts action tropes to highlight the strength and agency of its elderly protagonist. Margolin's script resonates with infectious humor and a touching narrative, earning rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival for its fresh take on familiar genres and its sensitive portrayal of aging. June Squibb's portrayal of Thelma is nothing short of remarkable. Known for her early career as a dancer and singer, Squibb embraced the physicality of the role, performing most of her own stunts—including high-speed scooter chases and rolling across beds with a gun in hand—all while channeling the fierce determination of her character. Her connection to Thelma's sense of justice is deeply personal, shaped by her lifelong ethos of right and wrong, and her late husband's belief that she could have made an excellent cop. The chemistry between Squibb and Roundtree is palpable, bringing to life a story filled with laughter, grit, and a profound sense of companionship. Margolin's casting choice was driven by Squibb's perfect blend of strength and vulnerability, humor and understatement—qualities that mirror his own grandmother's indomitable spirit. As we explore this extraordinary film, we also ponder the possibilities of a sequel. After all, every great action hero deserves a franchise. Join us as we delve into the making of "Thelma," the remarkable performances of its cast, and the inspiring messages it conveys about aging with dignity and determination.

In this episode of the show, AJ and Tara discuss what we know so far about Roarke’s Mansion! There are a TON of rooms in this house, and how many and what kind of rooms can be a bit confusing. It’s a bit like the Winchester Mystery House. Is it going to be an endless construction project until the day Roarke dies? We may never know. Anyway… we chose to discuss a specific topic due to a recent conversation on our Facebook page. The discussion was about whether Roarke would build a Media Room similar to the one he saw in Roundtree’s house in “Celebrity in Death.” The discussion continued in the most recent book, “Random in Death.” Additionally, we debated whether Eve would even want a large media room. Interestingly, according to the Wiki page about Roarke’s Mansion, he already has a “Video Room” (mentioned in “Loyalty in Death”), a “Family Media Room,” a “Main Media Room” (mentioned in “Imitation in Death”), and a “Game Room” with several video screens. This is where Mavis and Nixie watched Mavis’ new video. We start out discussing exactly where it would be located, and how that area, which at the moment contains apartments and a parking garage, would suddenly become one property for one man. Our theory, as with a lot of things in this series, is: Urban Wars. There are several floors in this house, so using the Wiki as a guide, we go floor by floor and discuss all the rooms on each. One thing we learned, or just decided was cannon, is that practically every room has a hidden bar somewhere, and a terrace. This includes the “Gift Room,” where we have decided, there is also a “Tasting Room,” in case you want to taste any of the liquors available as gifts before you give it. There are so many more details on the Wiki page, and we go over most of them in this episode.
In today's episode, Elzie Flenard engages in a captivating conversation with business expert Will Roundtree. Together, they dive deep into the realm of business credit, funding strategies, and the art of managing finances.Throughout the conversation, the importance of structured business approaches is underscored. Will advocates for businesses to operate with a focus on customer experience, result-oriented processes, and scalability. The episode encapsulates the essence of wealth-building through creative financing. Will's journey from personal credit struggles to mastering creative financing and building a financial education empire is both inspiring and educational. This episode provides valuable insights into the world of business credit, funding strategies, and the mindset required for financial success. Tune in, learn, and transform your approach to business and finance.Highlights:02:31 - The banks know that nine out of ten businesses will fail year one through three, and the likelihood of a business being open past year one through three is about 10%. And so the odds are stacked against most people. So, when people go to the bank and the first thing they say is, "Oh, let me go get a small business loan," it's almost like looking for Bigfoot; it's almost nonexistent. But then, a lot of times, people will say, "Well, let me try to go for an SBA loan." Less than 1% of businesses ever get approved for SBA loans, especially in the black community, because a lot of those businesses don't have their paperwork in order.11:35 - I started studying economics because I often say that one of the reasons why a lot of small businesses, especially in our communities, don't make it is that we don't learn the economics of things. We hear about financial literacy, but I think that economics is the second part of that. And so in my four-step Roundtree methodology, I call it that there's four things that you need to focus on, or four steps. Number one is mindset. Number two is understanding the power of credit. Number three is knowing the cost of money. That's the economic part, which eventually will help you build assets and wealth.29:14 - A lot of times I meet so many people who go and get capital or want to go into business, and they're so busy looking at everybody else's lens that they are trying to hurry up and get there, not knowing that the person who you're looking at probably has been in the game or running this race for 20 years, like myself. So, stop trying to compare yourself to somebody who's on chapter 20 and you're still in the introductory stage of your book or in your journey. His expertise has garnered recognition among his peers and community members as the founder and top-grossing principal at WE Management Services. Will has helped over 3,500 small to medium-sized businesses access over 300 million dollars in business funding over the 36 months. In 2005, he left his hometown of Milwaukee, WI, with a borrowed 500 dollars and headed towards Las Vegas. Once there, Roundtree found the ruthless realities of living without a financial plan and imperfect credit. His applications were denied for housing, and this left him homeless and living out of his car.Roundtree was inspired to diligently educate himself on personal finance and credit. He would walk into libraries and read books about consumer credit laws, standard operating procedures, regulations, and economics. This led to him becoming a FICO Certified Consultant and eventually to the creation of WE Management Services, a highly-rated financial services company. He was impressed by the profit and loss statement and pictures of the guy's automobiles and the trips he took. So he sold Will on the lifestyle, not necessarily the business. After liquidating his 401-K, Will also took out some personal loans to invest in the tax franchise. His total investment into the franchise was about $40,000 upfront, plus additional yearly fees. After the purchase was completed, Will had to lease an office. This week's Mission CTRL episode takes us behind the Blue Wall in Bridgeport. David Daniels III is a Retired Lieutenant from the Bridgeport Police Department. After serving the residents of Bridgeport for over 25 years he decided to call it quits. Daniels was born and raised in the infamous P.T. Barnum Housing Projects and what he learned there prepared him for a lifetime of adversity. What he had to deal with would cause the average person to throw in the towel. Eight months after transitioning from corporate America to Bridgeport PD, Daniels experienced something that would change the trajectory of his career. As an outspoken man of integrity he decided to live by his convictions instead of standing behind the Blue Wall. David was inspired by the late actor Richard Roundtree and at first blush one might think it's because Roundtree played John Shaft while David was coming of age in the 70's. But, that doesn't tell the whole story. Daniels is the author of Black and Blue in Bridgeport and Founder of The Bridgeport Jazz Festival. Tune in to hear how Daniels monetizes his habits during his retirement and get a peek behind the Blue Wall of Silence. Before peeling back the layers of this episode, Ramon and the PD Flight crew discuss the NFL and recap NMSDC Conference in Baltimore. . . . Featured Musician: Grand Gesture The Video: For those of you asking, the guy in the upper-left is Alex Drain. You may not know him, but he's probably seen film on you, and has you cold. [After THE JUMP: What we said] --------------------- 1. Across the Crooked Blue Line, wsg Steve Lorenz: Offense starts at the top. QB Kendrick Bell: Uh, is he a quarterback? Who cares, he's Ronnie's brother. RB Cole Cabana: Put on weight, become Donovan Edwards. Doesn't mind blocking. RB Benjamin Hall: Low-rated, but thick and has some wiggle. WR Karmello English: Late pull out of SEC country, athletic, can play outside. WR Semaj Morgan: Comp was Sainristil before the switch. WR Fredrick Moore: Steve very high on him. Productive, great routes, skinny. Roundtree! TE Deakon Tonielli: 6'6" athlete, needs to gain some pounds before he's Loveland 2.0. TE Zack Marshall: Staff loves the measurements, athleticism. OT Evan Link: Staff thinks he's a 5-star. Important to get a true OT in this class. OG Amir Herring: The high floor. Center possibility? OG Nathan Efobi: The high ceiling. Long way to go. PK Adam Samaha: Steve is on a mission to give kickers some love. 2. Across the Crooked Blue Line, wsg Steve Lorenz: Defense starts at 34:40 DT Trey Pierce: Late riser, didn't rise high enough. Immediate Kris Jenkins. DT Brooks Bahr: Long (e.g. Godin) DT who can't stay blocked. SDE Enow Etta: Headliner, big for a DE, moves like one anyways. Mike Morris? WDE Aymeric Koumba: No floor, no ceiling. France, FRA. MLB Semaj Bridgeman: Scouting pass/fail for Helow. He+sites high, other schools not. MLB Hayden Moore: Tackling machine from Unscoutable, CO. M wanted bad. ATH Jason Hewlett: What is he? An athlete! A Viper! A receiver? EDGE Breeon Ishmail: What is he? An edge. To grow. S D'Juan Waller Jr.: What is he? Could be Jeremy Clark. Could be a FS. CB Cameron Calhoun CB Jyaire Hill: The Illinois battle. The Vibe. All the ability, teach him CB immediately. 3. Portal starts at 1:06:44 QB Jack Tuttle: We need depth, he increases his rolodex. Locker room guy. TE AJ Barner: Also a locker room guy. Tough to scout TE in a Walt Bell offense, but should Schoon. OG/OT LaDarius Henderson: The new Olu. Could have gone pro. Will be LT or Zinter. LFG! C Drake Nugent: Now we defend PFF: two QB pressures in hundreds and hundreds of pass sets. OT Myles Hinton: Needs a reset, was hurt last year, was not good in 2021. Would he take a redshirt? WDE Josaiah Stewart: More devilish than Danna. Huge deal for M's needs. Proverbial "dip." WLB Ernest Hausmann: Was #1 in the portal. M saw his best game, came around late in the season. Portal and Michigan: This is going well, probably because of a little luck this year in what was available, also because the market is bigger. This is not how MSU is doing it. 4. Wrap starts at 1:43:46 What happened? Coaching turnover/Harbaugh's NFL flirtation killed momentum, and then NIL, which is the difference between Michigan and Notre Dame this time. Future is brighter: M is getting their feet under them with NIL, staff is stabilized again. This was the Year of NIL, Michigan didn't play, and a lot of those who did set unreasonable expectations that are going to see these guys portaling.
