Bill Yeargin also serves as chairman of the National Marine Manufacturers Association with 1,300 member companies producing an estimated 85 percent of the boats, engines, trailers and accessories used by boaters and anglers throughout the U.S. and Canada. According to published reports, the recreational boating supports 812,000 American jobs and 36,000 businesses in the U.S. and contributes to the $1.2 trillion outdoor recreation economy. America's Roundtable conversation focuses on America's economy and the impact of public policy: ✅ Focusing on President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico, as well as China and the European Union. ✅ The case for bilateral free trade agreements with allies including Britain, Canada, Europe and India. ✅ Forging a level playing field with a free, fair and reciprocal trade agreement. ✅ Correct Craft's unique American story as the iconic boat manufacturing company celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. "I am a CEO, not an economist, and I confess to having a strong affinity for capitalism. I believe if you want to help people, you should start a philanthropic organization. If you want to help a LOT of people, start a business. Capitalism is the undeniable wealth creator, but right now it is on life support." Bill Yeargin, Losing Capitalism, CEO World Magazine "We who live in free market societies believe that growth, prosperity and, ultimately, human fulfillment are created from the bottom up, not the government down. Only when the human spirit is allowed to invent and create, only when individuals are given a personal stake in deciding economic policies and benefiting from their success – only then can societies remain alive, dynamic, prosperous, progressive and free. Trust the people. This is the one irrefutable lesson of the entire post-war period, contradicting the notion that rigid government controls are essential to economic development. The societies that have achieved the most spectacular, broad-based progress are neither the most tightly controlled, nor the biggest in size, nor the wealthiest in natural resources. No, what unites them all is their willingness to believe in the magic of the marketplace." Bill Yeargin also serves as chairman of the National Marine Manufacturers Association with 1,300 member companies producing an estimated 85 percent of the boats, engines, trailers and accessories used by boaters and anglers throughout the U.S. and Canada. The conversation highlights Bill Yeargin's recent op-ed piece in CEO World Magazine titled, "Losing Capitalism," (https://ceoworld.biz/2024/08/22/losing-capitalism/) in which he relays concerns about the strong headwinds that are blowing against the ideas of economic liberty and free markets. "I am a CEO, not an economist, and I confess to having a strong affinity for capitalism. I believe if you want to help people, you should start a philanthropic organization. If you want to help a LOT of people, start a business. Capitalism is the undeniable wealth creator, but right now it is on life support." — Bill Yeargin, Losing Capitalism, CEO World Magazine The timely conversation also focuses on economic polices being presented including a major tax hike on businesses which will adversely impact small companies and workers, and schemes that will halt investments in America. As tax competition for lower rates continues around the world, America may well become an economic laggard with businesses leaving its shores for low tax jurisdictions. The Wall Street Journal's editorial board (https://www.wsj.com/opinion/kamala-harris-corporate-tax-increase-business-wages-2024-election-746ee509) opined by stating: "The Democratic team that brought you declining real wages is now threatening to lower your pay again. That's the practical effect of Kamala Harris's idea to raise the U.S. corporate tax rate to 28%, and it's instructive that an anti-growth tax increase is one of the Vice President's few distinctive policy priorities so far. Ms. Harris's endorsement Monday of a 28% rate, up from the current 21%, signs onto what President Biden has been proposing." Over the decades, there have been certain forces decrying the ills of capitalism and making unsubstantiated claims. The think tank The Institute of Economic Affairs, which offered reformer Margaret Thatcher strategic ideas on turning Great Britain away from socialism in the 1970s and 1980s states: "...but when we see such unsubstantiated claims, we should remember; the data simply doesn't support the anti-capitalists." The discussion also raises the concerns of skyrocketing government spending. Milton Friedman, Nobel prize winner in economics and founding partner of International Leaders Summit (the think tank which launched America's Roundtable) said: “Keep your eye on one thing and one thing only: how much government is spending, because that's the true tax … If you're not paying for it in the form of explicit taxes, you're paying for it indirectly in the form of inflation or in the form of borrowing." Bill Yeargin authored a number of books including the bestseller, "Education of a CEO", "Making Life Better" and the recently released "Faith Leap" - now available on Amazon. In an earlier episode on America's Roundtable, Bill Yeargin shared about his experiences in the business arena and the principles which guided him and his company through a major transformation from $40 million in sales in 2009 to over $1 billion annually. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @billyeargin @ileaderssummit @AmericasRT @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. On America's Roundtable, Bill Yeargin shares about his experiences in the business arena and the principles which guided him and his company through a major transformation from $40 million in sales in 2009 to over $1 billion annually. Bill Yeargin leads a company of over 2000 employees with distributors in 70 countries. Correct Craft had a 99-year history as a premier boat manufacturer but was teetering on the edge of survival when he took the reins in the early 2000s. During this conversation Bill Yeargin highlights his journey to the Middle East and the significance of the Abraham Accords and people-to-people relations through trade and investment to advance peace and prosperity. He has authored a number of books including the bestseller, “Education of a CEO” and the recently released “Faith Leap” - now available on Amazon. A passionate lifelong learner, Bill Yeargin has earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and an MBA. He has also completed post-graduate studies at Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, and MIT. Bill Yeargin served both the Obama and Trump administrations on cabinet-level advisory councils. He is the Chairperson of The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), the nation's leading trade association representing boat, marine engine and accessory manufacturers. Collectively, the association's members manufacture an estimated 80 percent of marine products used in North America. “By the time I arrived at Correct Craft, the fighting within the company's ownership family combined with a revolving door of CEOs, had created a culture that was, I think it's fair to say, toxic,” says Yeargin. “Today, nearly 20 years later, Correct Craft has grown dramatically, exceeding our goal of over $1 billion in annual revenue. When people ask about the secret sauce that both turned Correct Craft around and fueled our tremendous growth, I share that it is primarily two things: our strategic planning process and our culture.” He has been recognized with many of the marine industry's top awards including Boating Industry's “Mover and Shaker of the Year.” Florida Trend magazine called him one of “Florida's Most Influential Business Leaders” and he is an Orlando Business Journal “CEO of the Year.” He was also presented the “Governor's Business Ambassador Medal” by the Governor of Florida. Eisenhower's Urgent Request (https://boatingindustry.com/blogs/jonathan-sweet/2014/05/30/correct-crafts-world-war-ii-miracle/) "Most of us in the industry know about the great work boat builders did during World War II to supply the military with vessels. It's worth remembering, though, during this Memorial Day week. I was reminded of it once again as we finished up our anniversary issue, which went to print this week. The folks at Correct Craft/Nautique Boat Company shared some of their photos and information from that era, including the “Miracle Production.” That was when the company, then known as Pine Castle Boat and Construction Company, built 400 boats in 15 days in 1945 to aid the war effort – all without working Sundays. I'm sure the story is familiar to many of you, but worth sharing again. You can read the full story in the words of Ralph C. Meloon Sr. here, but these are some of the highlights: On February 9, 1945, the government contacted the company and asked them how many boats they could make by February 28. Simply put, the military needed boats and they needed them fast. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower was requesting 569 boats to help move troops and supplies across the Rhine as the allies made their final push into Germany. Although only scheduled to make 48 boats that month, the company agreed to produce 300. Despite pressure from the government to work seven days a week, the company kept to its long-held belief not to work on Sunday." Read the full article here. Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Bill Yeargin, president and CEO of Correct Craft — a respected leader in the marine industry. On America's Roundtable, Bill Yeargin shares about his experiences in the business arena and the principles which guided him and his company through a major transformation from $40 million in sales in 2009 to over $1 billion annually. When people ask about the secret sauce that both turned Correct Craft around and fueled our tremendous growth, I share that it is primarily two things: our strategic planning process and our culture.” During this conversation Bill Yeargin highlights his personal faith journey which he describes in the book "Faith Leap," including how his faith has helped him lead a company of over 2000 employees with distributors in 70 countries. Correct Craft had a 99-year history as a premier boat manufacturer but was teetering on the edge of survival when he took the reins in the early 2000s. He has been recognized with many of the marine industry's top awards including Boating Industry's “Mover and Shaker of the Year.” Florida Trend magazine called him one of “Florida's Most Influential Business Leaders” and he is an Orlando Business Journal “CEO of the Year.” He was also presented the “Governor's Business Ambassador Medal” by the Governor of Florida. The Boating Industry | Correct Craft's World War II Miracle (https://boatingindustry.com/blogs/jonathan-sweet/2014/05/30/correct-crafts-world-war-ii-miracle/) General Dwight D. Cannon, his cancer journey, survivorship, and her family's experience, inspired her to write her first book “Thankful For the Fight'' in which she shares her family's heartbreaking and inspiring cancer battle. In addition to advocate, lawyer, boss, and wife, Melissa proudly wears the hats of stepmum, bio mum, adoptive mum, and most recently, grandmother - all by 36! Melissa is now a lawyer turned Master Certified Coach and has since worked with countless women, encouraging, and empowering them to become the best version of themselves – or as she likes to say, helping them “get ripped on the inside – that their insides match their outside.”It is said that life's hardest moments make us stronger. That is true for Melissa. As a result of advocating, fundraising, and changing the world of pediatric cancer Melissa has had the privilege of speaking on stages across the globe from keynoting at Glasgow Children's Hospital, to the SF Giants stadium, and the private home of Dick Vitale, ESPN megastar. While those stages are powerful platforms indeed there has been nothing more transformative for Melissa than the stories of love and hope found over a shared over cup of tea with another mother or family walking through their hardest times. Pediatric cancer is not fun.  It is hard. It is unforgiving. It does not discriminate. It forces you to reckon with what you think you know about yourself. It challenges you in ways nothing else can. The battle isn't always in treatments or diagnosis it is your mental emotional and spiritual strength. And even still, it is all too often not enough to win. While she did not know it, every hard thing she walked through, every devastated mother's hand that she held as another precious baby was taken too early, every plane she boarded to travel across the country to speak for the voiceless… Was giving birth to something even more powerful…Mummabear is her moniker and it is also a metaphor. Life is hard but we can do hard things. Strength does not come from life being easy. Radical changes in the way we live our lives, or practice medicine do not come from our silence. It comes from finding our ROAR. Melissa knows that to live your truth, you must first find your voice. Her ROAR, saved her son, changed her marriage, and transformed her life. Today, she is passionate about sharing this message and this work with women around the world. Awards:Melissa and her work have been honored and recognized in many ways over the years:Top 30 Life Coaches To Look Out For In 2021 (2021)Micro influencers to look out for in 2021 (2021)Superwoman of the year with Orlando Family Magazine (2019)Woman of the Year with Orlando Magazine (2019)40 under 40 with the Orlando Business Journal (2018)Winner of the Victory Cup Initiative (2018)Woman of the Year with Orange Appeal (2018)Message of the year with The Collective's Change Everything awards (2017)Women to watch (2014).Links to award articles and video:Award: Top 30 Life Coaches To Look Out For In 2021https://thenycjournal.com/top-30-life-coaches-to-look-out-for-in-2021/Award: Micro influencers to look out for in 2021https://www.influencive.com/micro-influencers-to-look-out-for-in-2021/https://www.influencive.com/micro-influencers-to-look-out-for-in-2021/Award: 2019 Woman of the Year w/ Orlando MagazineVideo of the event provided by CKc YouTube page https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jWiLor6OkAAward: 2018 40 under 40 w/ Orlando Business Journalhttps://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/news/2018/12/12/how-her-toddlers-experience-led-this-british-expat.htmlAward: 2018 Woman of the Year w/ Orange appealOrange Appeal January/February 2018 magazine, page 108 Melissa's interviewhttps://issuu.com/orangeappealmagazine/docs/oa_0118-issuu Cannonball Kids' cancerWhen her son's battle with cancer began, Melissa realized the true horrors of pediatric cancer. From a lack of funding for new treatment options, to the enduring despair families often face in silence. The government spends less than 4% of the annual cancer research budget on pediatric cancers. This means there is little to no treatment options for the children as there is little to no money invested for research purposes. Having always been taught to “Go big or Go home” and experiencing this reality firsthand, she used her drive to become a founding member of Cannonball Kids' cancer. CKc was founded on June 16, 2014. The mission behind this one of a kind foundation is to fund innovative, accessible research, to provide better treatments and quality of life, and most importantly, to educate for change. CKc, focuses on funding clinical research trials with board appointed scientists. These trials give children a chance to survive and thrive. CKc has created over 590 treatment options for pediatric cancer patients, and has taken over 25 U.S. States, plus Washington DC, Canada, Scotland and Switzerland. And in 6 years they have created more treatment options for patients than has been available for the last 40 years. In addition to the brilliant work of the scientists and their committed teams, the CKc community outreach and education team has launched multiple impactful marketing campaigns such as #NoMoreOptions. The #NoMoreOptions campaign brought awareness to the critical moment when a doctor must tell parents “we have no more options for helping your sick child”. This campaign received nationwide recognition being featured in Times Square and all over the U.S. on public buses. The more recent campaign, “This is Treatment'' was revealed at their annual Gold Gala, featuring many of the kids on CKc trials who have endured secondary hardships due to traditional chemotherapy treatments. Through this campaign CKc's goal was to educate communities on what is rarely ever discussed: First, that the typical treatments for pediatric cancer are simply watered-down adult chemotherapy. And, finally, the dramatic and life altering consequences of those treatments – such as hearing loss, loss of limbs, developmental delays and many more. We need to fund research in order to create treatments that are appropriate for children's bodies, and to ensure they have the opportunity to live complete and whole lives. One of the most awaited nights of the year for any CKc supporter (and team member) is the “Gold Gala” night, or as Cannon likes to call it “his party”. The purpose for this gala is to raise money that will later be used for funding new innovative trials, to educate and to engage a new crowd of people who are eager to help and get started on the journey with CKc. Money is raised, educational and inspirational speakers such as CKc founders, researchers, patients and their families share their stories, sensational auctions, a live DJ, delicious food, all to change the world of pediatric cancer. As the support for CKc has grown exponentially since 2014, the team realized it was time to empower supporters who were eager to drive change in their own communities. And so, “Ambassador Training” was born. The first cohort of 60 people from all over the U.S. who were interested in becoming more involved with the mission of educating for change gathered together and received advocate training. Learning how to stand up and use their voices in their hometowns, cities, states. This group of advocates now speak up about the disparity in funding, lobby for change, and share the harsh reality that comes with pediatric cancer. These Ambassadors share the stories of families who have suffered and made the most unfair sacrifices, and make sure that the children taken by pediatric cancer are not forgotten – but beacons for hope and change. Writing:Melissa realized early on that very few know, and even less understand, the world of pediatric cancer, which is the number one killer of children in the U.S. The experience is isolating, within families and communities because watching children suffer is hard. However, she knew in her bones if the world could see and not look away, they would be moved to change. So, Melissa took it upon herself to show everyone the gut wrenching, heart dropping truth by publishing her first book called “Thankful for the Fight” (2018). “Thankful for the Fight” was a central quote Melissa used through-out her family's cancer journey. In this book she details her son Cannon's battle - sharing the pictures of her two year old during treatment, and blood transfusions, and the after-effects of those treatments. And also, this book shows the healing power of gratitude – from within the family between her and her husband, and for the community that gathered around them and walked with them through the hardest time in their lives. Speaking:Melissa is a big advocate in the pediatric cancer world and as a result has had many opportunities to publicly share her knowledge. She has been invited to speak and be interviewed for TV, local news channels, podcasts, and has been praised and featured in many magazines. Adoption:Melissa had always dreamed of adopting a little girl into the Wiggins clan. Already a mum to 4 awesome kids and a cute bull mastiff, there was just a little something needed to complete her cup of gratitude. In comes the beautiful rainbow, which is what the family refers to her as, Charlie Mary Emma Wiggins. A little 2-year-old Colombian baby girl, with a personality bigger than life itself - who shares the same birthdate as her mumma (a God-incidence, as Melissa likes to say). After the year-long process of paperwork, home studies, meetings, 30 days in Colombia without her 3 boys, the little rainbow was finally able to come home to her family. The adoption journey was hard, but anything is possible with a strong team behind her. Charlie met her mummy and daddy in Colombia for the first time, and it was a bond like no other. After those long 30 days, Melissa and Charlie headed home for Orlando where Cannon, Arran and Gray patiently awaited their sister's arrival. Her room had been ready with a hand painted rainbow on it, head bows hanging on the walls and princess decoration galore. When she met her brothers, it was as if they had been siblings their whole lives, it took no effort at all for these 4 siblings to get along. Charlie loves her big sister Olivia, who is away at college, but has made many trips to come home to see her little sister. Not only is she receiving all the love she deserves, but she is also receiving the medical attention she needs. At just a couple days old Charlie was put into an orphanage where it was discovered that she had craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis is a birth defect which causes the bones in a baby's skull to join too early, in most cases causing developmental delays if not treated right away. She came into the U.S. with a surgery already scheduled so that her growth would not be greatly impacted. In the 8 months since Charlie came home and she has gone through 2 major surgeries where her head was opened from ear to ear for the purpose of reshaping her skull giving her brain the space it needs to adequately grow.In such a short time Charlie is a new person. She smiles ear to ear upon waking up. She loves to swim with her family. She loves to go on adventures down to the lake. She can ride her scooter like no other and she loves to snack. The impact a loving home can have on a child is huge. She is a strong, brave girl as she loves to say, and has shown a lot of Melissa's followers that although adoption is hard, we can all do hard things for love. Social media:You can keep up with Melissa on social media: On IG at @mummabearwiggins_ and Facebook. There you can see her day to day raising 4 kids. Pictures of her new granddaughter. Charlie's journey since integrating with her family. Cannon's journey in life as a now happy 8-year-old. The awesome Dr. Gray who insists on being called Dr. as he aspires to be a brain surgeon someday. And Arran, who is filled with love and creativity. You can also catch up with some of her personal day to day adventures as a wife, boss, writer, speaker, and pediatric cancer advocate. BRAND RESOURCES:Evergreen Podcast Network - EvergereenPodcasts.comThoughts That Rock – ThoughtsThatRock.comCertified Rock Star - CertifiedRockStar.comBooky Call - https://www.bookycall.comBooky Call - Book Review App on Apple - Apps.Apple.comBooky Call - Book Review App on Google Play - Play.Google.Com Service That Rocks: TCreate Unforgettable Experiences  and Turn Customers into Fans (Jim Knight) - ServiceThatRocksBook.comLeadership That Rocks: Take Your Brand's Culture to Eleven and Amp Up Results (Jim Knight) - LeadershipThatRocksBook.comCulture That Rocks: How to Revolutionize Your Company's Culture (Jim Knight) – CultureThatRocks.comBlack Sheep: Unleash the Extraordinary, Awe-Inspiring, Undiscovered You (Brant Menswar) - FindYourBlackSheep.comRock ‘n Roll With It: Overcoming the Challenge of Change (Brant Menswar) – RocknRollWithIt.comCannonball Kids' cancer – CannonballKidscancer.orgBig Kettle Drum - BigKettleDrum.comSpectacle Photography (Show/Website Photos) – SpectaclePhoto.comJeffrey Todd “JT” Keel (Show Music) - JT Keel

And instead of doing everything okay or doing everything good, I wanted to do a lot of things great. I want to do really well and be successful. And I was just managing.”“I had someone who told me to do what I was passionate about. And that truly paid off. I think anywhere that I invested - because I was passionate about children, children's cancer, or small businesses - I did well, that's where I shined. And that's where I did better. And that's where I made the most impact.”“I really think when people work together for one cause, they can make a bigger impact than spreading $1,000 here and $1,000 there. Let's come together and make a really big impact.”“I think that's what we're all missing…we're writing down this big list of priorities. But then when we actually go to implement the time, it's not matching up with our priorities.” Connect with Sarah:⭐ Connect on Instagram @sarahgrafton⭐ Connect on Facebook: www.facebook.com/SarahGrafton⭐ Connect on Instagram @winterparkfashionweek⭐ Winter Park Fashion Week: https://www.winterparkfw.com/ Connect with Allison:⭐ Connect on Instagram @allisonwalsh⭐ JOIN OUR FREE COMMUNITY: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shebelievedshecouldcommunity⭐ Check out book recommendations from the show here⭐ Download your free 90 day planner here

Allison shares four really valuable lessons she's learned over the last decade building businesses and brands. As a huge advocate leveling up, Allison challenges listeners to invest in themselves, get visible, monetize their brands and create multiple streams of income. Most importantly, she discusses not letting fear (or yourself) get in the way of your potential. Memorable moments:3:14: Go after opportunities and make sure that your business is well equipped to handle the successes along the way.4:21: When you limit your ability to serve and show up in the world the way that the world needs to see you, you also limit the opportunities and possibilities for your future.4:31: We've all been blessed with so many talents, so many skills and gifts, and all the good things that need to be shared, but if you're hiding under a rock because you're afraid of what others might think, or you're fearing failure, you've got to move out from underneath that because it absolutely is your time to shine.5:44: Since 2009, I've had multiple streams of income, and that's because I nearly lost everything back then. I realized I was never going to ever put myself in that position again. And I think as women, we've got to start to have more open and honest conversations about money because I think if ever there was a year where it proved to be financially prudent to have other sources and streams coming in it was 2020. About Allison:Allison Walsh, JD is a corporate executive, entrepreneur, and success coach for women. Because when we are most civil with one another, that's when we can make the most progress for everybody.” [16:05] “I think prosperity cures most of what ails us, and if you're anti-prosperity, that's a problem. I think entrepreneurialism has raised the standard of living for more people than any bureaucrat or politician has ever done, barring maybe a few world wars, and we've saved some people.” [50:46] “I very much did feel like this is economic warfare, and we were on the front lines, and it's chaotic and hectic.” [57:53] “In times of crisis, I think it really brings out people's true character. For good, and for bad. Fortunately in my case, I’ve had great character people.” [1:04:38] “This is all about stabilizing the economy, because if you don't stabilize the economy, eventually people end up on the streets with pickets and torches, and that's, we don't want that. You know, that's, that's what we're trying to prevent.” Enjoy the Podcast?Seek Go Create is for anyone seeking excellence, moving towards success, or creating something new. When I called María to congratulate her I said: “María, this can’t possibly be true? YOU’RE TOO YOUNG to get a lifetime achievement award!”, to which she giggled and responded: “Believe it or not, it’s been 26 years.” So, I invited her to share her DEI trajectory with me on this episode of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, and WOW, what a valuable resource she is. Now in her new role, she has a platform to advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and champion for change in workforce environments that do not address the challenges faced by people with visible and invisible barriers.

Grant Heston:                   There's a lot of things labeled fake news that people just don't like. Paul Jarley:                         It's a popular Halloween costume. Rick Brunson:                    There are companies selling fake news costumes. You can dress up in a fake news ... It's plastered with newspaper pages and it has red fake across the front ... Yeah. $54.95 online. Paul Jarley:                         And combined with data analytics, it can be, well, clickalicious. Cindy Barth:                       There are certain things that we know all we have to do is put these keywords in a headline, and we're going to have what we call a clickalicious day because everybody in town is going to be going, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang on that story. We know that. Rick Brunson:                    Where, oh where have you gone, Walter Cronkite? Walter Cronkite:              That's the way it is. Friday, March 6th 1981. Paul Jarley:                         This show is all about separating hype from fundamental change. I'm Paul Jarley, Dean of the College of Business here at UCF. I've got lots of questions. To get answers, I'm talking to people with interesting insights into the future of business. Have you ever wondered, is this really a thing? Onto our show. Paul Jarley:                         Let's talk a little bit about how the world is changing in really broad strokes. When we were hunter gatherers and we started to plant crops, land was the most valuable thing and the people who were the richest and the most powerful owned the most land. And then machines were invented, and the Industrial Revolution happened and market economies occurred. In that, who owned the most machines became the most powerful people. Today, the most valuable asset is information. It's data. And the most powerful people in the future are going to be the people who control the most data, and they can use that data either to help inform you or they can manipulate you with that data. Paul Jarley:                         This gets us to the topic of fake news and whether fake news is really a thing or not. Is this something that 10 years from now we'll kind of laugh about and move on from, or will it be a part of our daily lives? And if it is, how do we determine what's fake from what's real out there? That's certainly something that my students need to know how to do, or we're all doomed. So, I brought together a panel of experts to talk a little bit about fake news, what it is, and whether it's really a thing or not. So I'm going to allow my guests to kind of introduce themselves. I'll start with Grant. Grant Heston:                   Sure. Thank you, Paul. I'm Grant Heston. I'm our Vice President for Communications in Marketing and Chief of Staff at the University of Central Florida. I got my undergraduate degree in journalism from a university about 90 minutes north of here, a little bit smaller than us. Football team is not quite as good. And so I live and breath with this every single day. Cindy Barth:                       Hi, I'm Cindy Barth. I'm Editor of Orlando Business Journal. I am a UCF graduate. My degree is in journalism with a minor in political science. Rick Brunson:                    Morning, everybody. My name is Rick Brunson and I'm an Associate Instructor of Journalism at the University of Central Florida where I'm also a proud alum. Got my degree there in 1984 and became a reporter and editor for the next 30 years and have been really privileged to return to the university where I learned about journalism and I teach it t...

The surf’s up for this episode of Teaching Change! In this two-parter, the hosts talk chasing waves and sustainability with Chris Castro, the Director of Sustainability for the City of Orlando. Chris’ love of nature started at an early age in Miami, FL where he worked on his stepfather’s palm tree farm. His extracurricular activities included snorkeling, scuba diving, and surfing–which was a major reason why he chose to attend the University of Central Florida (UCF) as an undergraduate. Orlando’s location gave Chris easy access to Florida’s exciting beaches and waterways.Chris may have come for the surfing but he quickly found himself at home among Orlando’s emerging innovation and technology scene. Within these budding platforms, Chris saw the potential for initiatives involving sustainability. Chris’ path to his current advocacy and life’s work is a testament to the power of higher education and the personal development it affords. When asked about his interest in sustainability, Chris recalls the course in Environmental Sociology he took as a student at UCF. He credits this class by opening his eyes on how humans impact the world and each other with actions such as energy consumption and waste. These revelations sparked his interest in sustainability activism and in solutions to issues that plague the environment. That’s when Chris went mobile. He rallied his peers together and formed IDEAS for Us, which began in 2008 as a UCF interdisciplinary organization of students working on policy and solutions to make college campuses more sustainable. Now IDEAS for Us has chapters all over the world, including one at Valencia College. The focus of IDEAS for Us revolves around energy, water, food, waste, and ecology. Two initiatives spearheaded by IDEAS for Us include Kill-A-Watt and Green Your Game. For Kill-A-Watt, students living in dorms compete to conserve energy and save money to win scholarships. Green Your Game promotes recycling, reducing, and reusing efforts at UCF’s tailgating events. The conversation then turns to Chris’ work as an urban farmer and the importance of creating a sustainable agricultural system. Chris shares that food currently travels an average of 1500-1800 miles before it reaches a person’s plate. To address this issue, Chris co-created the Fleet Farming program that converts lawns and underused land into farms. Fleet Farming is made possible through Swarm Rides which consist of volunteers on bikes collecting the city-grown produce. The produce is then sold at farmers markets and to local vendors.Chris wears many hats in addition to his day job. This episode just scratches the surface. We have Dave Krepcho as our guest for this episode of the Nonprofit Leaders Network. Vision and Board Communication were just two of the topics covered during the course of the call. Dave is the President and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank in Florida and is one of Orlando Business Journal’s 2015 class of CEO of the Year honorees. He has 22 years of experience in the food security sector. He started in non-profit management with a food bank in Miami, as president and CEO and then moved on to work at the national level for Feeding America as vice president of business development. Dave also serves on various boards at the local, state, and international levels. Second Harvest Food Bank, based in Orlando, is Central Florida's largest nonprofit food distributor. They are the "bridge" to an incredible amount of surplus food to a large population in Florida that is food insecure and at-risk of being hungry. Last year, they provided enough food for forty million meals. Here are some of the key points from our discussion: Engaging the Board in Developing a Strong Vision Dave believes in the old saying “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” That vision, though bigger than the board itself, should lay out a map of where they're going. So co-create that vision, and eventually your mission, with your board. Using the Strategic Plan as a Way to Document Progress Strategic planning may sound a lot of work but if done right, you have the roadmap to where you are going. Document the progress towards that vision and when people see progress and positive results, they're more likely to stay involved. Building on a Strong Foundation and Envisioning a Better Future Review the mission of your organization and what it was in the past and hit the refresh button. Does this mission still hold or does it need to be tweaked? What else can you do to benefit the community? Healthy questions such as those make your direction much clearer. Staying Tuned in with Your Board Dave recalls being an executive director of a different organization in the past where he thought he got out too far ahead of the board of directors. And he has learned that lesson. He says it's all about communication, communication at a very high level. "The relationship between the executive director and the board… I liken it to a dance. Sometimes you have to lead and sometimes you have to follow. And you try not to step on each other's feet," Dave added. Investing Time to Effectively Manage a Volunteer Board Invest time with the board, your officers, the subcommittees, and activities of the board and build good relationships with the group and individually. Attend committee meetings and be part of those conversations. Recruiting and Vetting Potential Board Members It is good to establish a process for vetting prospects. Look for potential members who have a passion for and belief in you vision and mission. Diversity among members is also as important. Dave says that the more you can achieve a real nice mix and variety of people, the richer the conversation and the bigger the benefit for the organization is. You also want people who have some influence, people who are connectors and ideally someone who is close to the population you are serving. And for qualified people whose reasons for joining the board is still unclear to you, suggest they be involved in a subcommittee first. When you see how engaged they are, you may want to consider them for the governing board at some point in the future. Find more information on the podcast at www.SocialGoodInstigators.com.
