When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway.  Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. Along with the help of co-host Zack Albetta, the podcast has a growing audience throughout the world with more listeners every week. www.workingdrummer.net   *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen     The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. When I heard that Lzzy Hale had signed on to help the Skid Row guys for 4 shows, I was stoked! I was excited for the band, excited for the people who would see her sing live, and excited for Lzzy! After the first show was in the books, I texted Skid Row bassist, Rachel Bolan and drummer, Rob Hammersmith. Both of them were giddy with how the weekend went. That's when I decided to ask Rachel if he'd come on my Talkin' Rock with Meltdown podcast to talk about it. "We had one rehearsal before the first show, and she blew us away." - Rachel Bolan Rachel told me how the ball started to roll at producer, Nick Raskulinecz's birthday party. "I was like, "Hey, man, would you want to step in and do a few shows with Skid Row?" And she, you know, after we kind of cleared out what exactly the shows were because we, you know, I think she kind of thought we were just going to jam at like the Mercy Lounge or something. But, so when we cleared that up, she said, yes. "Let me talk to my, my, team and my people and I'll have an answer for you." And the next day or a couple of days later, I was like, "Hey, man, were you serious about that?" She's like, yeah, it's a go. And we were all excited." "She unleashed that first scream, and we were all just like, whoa." - Rachel Bolan Rachel went on to say that they only rehearsed once before their first show. Lzzy said that she was holding back a little as to not blow out her voice. Then it was time to take the stage. "When we took the stage, 'Slave to the Grind", she unleashed. Unleashed that first scream. I was just like, I'm actually getting chills thinking about it right now. I was we're all just kind of looking at each other like, whoa" He couldn't heap enough praise on the Halestorm front woman. "You know, when someone is great at what they do, people appreciate it. They appreciated Lzzy because she is great. She's just freaking great!" He said the energy on stage was off the charts. "And you could you could feel the energy on stage. And, a few of my friends that said I've never seen you smile so much. You're always like the punk rock don't smile, guy. You know, like you're laughing up there, you're smiling and you're interacting, you know? So it was really cool, man. And we got two more. And I just feel like that's like another nine days and I'm like, climbing wall of, like, what do you know?" The other two shows he's referring to are in Reno, Nevada, and Sacramento, California. "Lzzy Hale is one of the best vocalists on the planet." - Rachel Bolan When I commented that Lzzy is such a badass, Rachel agreed. "You know, you just said something that is, descriptive that everyone has been saying, and that's badass. Man, it's so perfect because she is a badass. She's a beast on stage, man. She's great."

The This Is Nashville team is out for the Thanksgiving holiday. We are rebroadcasting an episode about Nashville's indie venues, which first aired in June.  Nashville's independent music venues have long been a proving ground for up-and-coming artists. They're also increasingly under threat as development and gentrification continue to put pressure on property values. Mercy Lounge, Cannery Ballroom and the High Watt have closed, and Exit/In recently announced that it will close and reopen under new management after Thanksgiving.  The city is waking up to the problem. Mayor John Cooper declared the week before Memorial Day weekend to be “Music Venue Independence Week.” What makes these spaces so vital to the life and culture of Music City, and what do we risk losing if they continue to shut down — or are replaced by corporate venues? We'll look at some of the history, the daunting circumstances of the present and what, if anything, can be done in the future to preserve this slice of Nashville's cultural landscape. But first, WPLN health care reporter Blake Farmer has an update about the flu season. Guests: Chris Cobb, owner of Exit/In and president of Music Venue Alliance Nashville Jeff Syracuse, Metro Council member, District 15 Kathryn Edwards, co-owner of DRKMTTR and musician Mel Bryant, musician Ariel Bui, musician Previous WPLN coverage: Exit/In, Midtown music venue beloved by locals, will close Nov. 24 ‘Growth is not always progress': What Mercy Lounge's closure says about the health of Nashville's independent music venues WNXP: In the Scene: On the complexities of emo nostalgia & creating a sustainable and equitable music ecosystem

https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Matt Sweeney) doesn't want to dazzle you with rock guitar. That's boring. That's lazy. At least to him. He wants to mesmerize you. “Really, that's the point of music: to get people's minds off of whatever and to hypnotize them a little bit,” https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Sweeney told PG in 2021). After beginning his Superwolves collaboration with Will Oldham, “that's when I thought, ‘Cool, I did the thing that I wanted to do. I can fingerpick now and I can play with a really great singer who is working in an idiom that I hadn't worked in before.' “I started playing with Will and that gave me the opportunity to keep developing the way that I was playing, because it went well with his singing. After a couple of years, that led to Will suggesting that we write songs together.” The audible opiate that Sweeney provides has also cast his spell over the works of Rick Rubin, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/cat-powers-journey (Cat Power), Run the Jewels, Chavez, John Legend, Zwan (collaboration with Billy Corgan), Tinariwen, “Cowboy” Jack Clement, https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/billy-gibbons (Billy Gibbons), and Margo Price. And with every episode of hypnosis comes a trance-breaking snapback. Providing that rhythmic recoil is Sweeney's current foil, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/ty-segall-and-emmett-kelly-no-filter-frenzy (Emmett Kelly). Both have worked with Oldham, but until now—in the current Superwolves line-up—never together. Kelly steps into the fold with an indie and outsiders Rolodex filled with names like https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/ty-segall (Ty Segall), Angel Olson, Azita, Cairo Gang, Mikal Cronin, The C.I.A., Earth Girl Helen Brown, Magic Trick, Doug Paisley, and Joan of Arc. Sweeney sums up their guitar-nership with his typical, sly-and-dry snark: “What's important about the way me and Emmett play together is that we never talk about it [laughs]. It's true! He's like the best guitar player. He's a master at making everything sound better. We've both worked together—but mostly separately—with our singer Will Oldham, and it was his suggestion that we should all go out together [without bass and drums] because it should be good. But really, we've never had to talk about it, and we just play. It's been a lot of fun.” So, when PG's Chris Kies recently connected with Sweeney and Kelly, they were providing a guitar backdrop for a headlining set fronted by Bonnie “Prince” Billy Oldham at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, supporting Sweeney and Billy's 2021 release, Superwolves. While the conversation with both does cover their spartan setups, the meat of the message is how gear is a tool for storytelling, humility, and liberation. Oh … but Kelly does reveal a Japanese gem that takes a guitar signal and reanimates it into anime speech-like phrases! [Brought to you by https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (D'Addario XS Electric Strings).]

Aaron Marshall loves guitar. “I make a living every day playing the electric guitar. My identity is built around this thing. I've been my own boss since 2015,” he declared https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/intervals (in a 2021 PG interview). Aaron Marshall believes in guitar: “Anyone who thinks the death of the electric guitar is upon us is very out of touch. You can't hold its head underwater. The electric guitar is iconic. It's not going anywhere.” And Aaron Marshall is never satisfied with guitar: “Everything's perfect. Let's change it all,” the Intervals visionary joked during this new Rig Rundown. “Everything is different, which is probably the most on-brand thing I can provide. But hopefully this is the beginning of that not being the case.” The guitar disciple started Intervals back in 2011. He's been the solo constant member and the band's musical pilot. He's put out four riveting, guitar-centric albums to date. And sure, the obvious 6-string influences are found within Intervals' music, with complementing flavors of prog, metal, djent, and jazz all percolating together. But the '90s kid has an unabashed love for Top 40 pop and has drawn from acts like NYSYNC, TLC, and Destiny's Child, too, giving Intervals' music more bounce, groove, and life. “I'll challenge myself to put my spin on a chord progression that feels like [TLC's] ‘No Scrubs,' but still be Intervals about it. It's always an experiment between me and the guitar. These sorts of experiments yield new songs.” Before Intervals' December '21 headlining show at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, prog-rock maestro Marshall reconnected with PG's Perry Bean to catalog his rig revamp. The ensuing conversation covered the decision to pass on a high-end (but limited) partnership with Mayones for a collaboration with Schecter that aims to bring guitars to everyone across the globe. (“You still have young people that are really interested in music for music's sake. And there is this wave of online instrumental guitar music that is the best it's ever been.”) Plus, he meticulously details how he's testing Neural DSP's pedalboard powerhouse with a space-encompassing stereo setup that will resonate with fans in every corner of the room. Music—and guitar—are therapeutic. The songs we write and riffs we play help reduce the pain, alleviate the stress, and produce some positivity in our lives. Microwave's singer/guitarist/lyricist Nathan Hardy has been using the studio and stage as his leather couch for nearly 10 years. Stovall, in 2014, saw him question his Mormon missionary upbringing. Two years later, Much Love focused on realities versus the romance of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. And 2019's Death Is a Warm Blanket is a dark, heavier, raging deep dive into his nihilistic thoughts. All three albums are honest, coarse evaluations of the pushing and pulling in Hardy's head and heart. Musically, the band has matured alongside Hardy's contemplative subject matter. Stovall and Much Love harness the teeter-totter dynamics mastered by Nirvana and also felt in Microwave's post-hardcore contemporaries like early Citizen and Turnover. While their loudest, most aggressive tendencies were unleashed in Death Is a Warm Blanket, Microwave's melodies and hooks can still be sticky and sweet as honey. Finally able to tour in support of that album, Microwave packed Nashville's Mercy Lounge on October 15. Just after soundcheck, Hardy and guitarist Travis Hill introduced PG to their favorite battle axes, walked us through their Odd Couple pedalboards, and Hill explained how an outdated laptop and trial version of Logic Pro provides a universal "poor man's Kemper" for guitars and bass. Recently Thrice's Dustin Kensrue (vocals/guitar) and Teppei Teranishi (guitar) participated in https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/hooked/thrice (PG's Hooked). (The video https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/hooked/ (series) features musicians talking about a moment, riff, or song that turned their world upside down and sideswiped them into playing.) Kensrue raved about the Pixies' dissonant melodies, while Teranishi highlighted Metallica's heavy impact. And at the conclusion of the video, they both admit the band has a lot of "Pixies" parts and "Metallica" moments throughout its catalog. Over the course of 11 studio albums—with the help of brothers Eddie (bass) and Riley (drums) Breckenridge—Thrice has explored odd-timing metal (Identity Crisis and The Illusion of Safety), thrashy screamo (The Artist in the Ambulance), maturing post-hardcore (Vheissu and Palms), all-encompassing prog-rock with ethereal escapes and mammoth, surly riffs (The Alchemy Index: Vols. I-IV), and an amalgamation of it all (To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere and Horizons/East). And even after all those years, all those albums, and all their discovered sounds, the Pixies and Metallica continue to be musical planets they orbit while exploring the outer realms of the sonic solar system. Prior to headlining Nashville's Mercy Lounge in support of the just-released Horizons/East, Kensrue and Teranishi spoke with PG's Perry Bean about the changes (and reductions) in their symbiotic setups. Kensrue explains why he's shifted his live tone (and Horizons/East recordings) to be fully dependent on the Line 6 Helix, and how that impacted the design of his signature Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay. Teranishi chronicles how the pandemic-created time void sent him down the lutherie rabbit hole and resulted in a familiar-looking-but-original build. There's no doubt ZZ Top trademarked Texas boogie. And over 30 years later, the Sword furthered the Lonestar shuffle's legacy by darkening it. The Austin outfit's 2006 debut Age of Winters combined the rhythmic bounce of Tres Hombres with the power and might of Master of Reality. The cross-pollination of Gibbons and Iommi continued in 2008's Gods of the Earth, with heavier right-hand picking and tempos shading towards thrash-y Priest and Thin Lizzy's "Emerald." Traces of proggy psychedelia, like 2112 Rush and late-'70s Genesis, turned 2010's concept album Warped Riders into a swirling voyage of sci-fi conquest and space exploration, with the music matching the otherworldly narrative. And 2012's Apocryphon saw the band settle into themselves, collectively cherry-picking all the things that worked on the previous three albums. Songs like "Cloak of Feathers" and the title track show their musical certainty. High Country, from three years later, showcases a once-singular-sounding band finding a home between Houston and Birmingham that could be best classified as classic mid-'70s hard rock. And 2018's Used Future—as its cover depicts—shows the band comfortably, calmly, confidently pressing the accelerator of their Bombshell Betty 1952 Buick Super Riviera and racing towards their own horizon. This fall 2021 run had the Sword members—J.D. Cronise (guitar/vocals), Kyle Shutt (guitars), Bryan Richie (bass/keyboards), and Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III (drums)—handling double duty, with a headline tour woven around opening shows for Primus. Before their top-of-the-bill show at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, Shutt, Cronise, and Richie showed PG how consolidating gear (and volume) has helped them sharpen their blade. Hailing from Nashville,TN, Lord Goldie, also known as Karizma (a monicher aptly coined for her charismatic stage presence), has been a creative, an artist and an iconoclast since birth. In a town that has historically turned its back on the hip hop community, Lord Goldie exists in an authentic space that fuses underground hip hop, soul, and rock. During her formative years, Goldie was equally as inspired by Linkin Park, Jimi Hendrix, and Nirvana as she was by Jay-Z, Tupac, Queen Latifah, and UGK. It is now no surprise that she is well-versed in cross-genre collaboration and marrying distinct sounds into a cohesive story. Lord Goldie has carved a niche in the greater Nashville area, thus enabling her to release meaningful content consistently. This multi-hyphenate raps, writes, produces, and manages, offering creative direction to up-and-coming independent artists like herself. She released her debut project, Built 2 Last, in 2014 and has only gained momentum since then. The following year, part one of her EP series ADHD (Another Dollar Hustlin Daily) was met with rave reviews. In 2017, Goldie dropped music videos for singles “Day By Day” and “Like I'm Broke” on YouTube. Later that year, she collaborated with eclectic Pop/R&B band, MUJA Music, to provide a dynamic live show unlike anything that's been seen in Music City. Lord Goldie has graced the stages of many iconic Nashville staples, including The Mercy Lounge, The High Watt, The Back Corner, and City Winery. Her talents have even taken her to the New Orleans House of Blues, as well as the coveted SXSW and A3C festival stages. Her Trap Conscious EP was released in 2018, leading with the single, “Leanin.” 2019 was a transformative year for Lord Goldie as she continued to mesmerize crowds while performing alongside a live band. She released the hit singles “Risks,” “How Low,” and “When You Ready.” By the end of 2019, Goldie's resonant Trap Conscious catapulted her to nominations for Best Rap Solo Artist, Best Urban Album, and Album of the Year at the Nashville Industry Music Awards. In 2020, Lord Goldie continues to push the needle forward in the Nashville hip-hop scene, while keeping her ear to the streets to elevate and support new talent. I am a latecomer to the world and talent of Jim Lauderdale...I "discovered" him in 2010 in Nashville at my first Americanafest (the annual conference of the Americana Music Association); he hosted the Annual Awards Ceremony at The Ryman Auditorium and I caught his official showcase with a full band at The Mercy Lounge. Shortly thereafter he was on a bill with Carrie Rodriguez at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City and I try to make every performance in my home town. I've become a true fan of his music and his amazing work ethic. He has released dozens of albums, been nominated for Grammies, is one of the most prolific collaborators in American music and yet still flies under most of the American public's musical radar. In this "phoner" into the Production Studio at 90.1 FM in 2015 during the release of Jim's "I am a Song," you'll hear a wide ranging conversation of his early musical beginnings as a banjo player in New York City's country scene, his love affair with the Eastern mind/body discipline tai chi, and a recounting of just a few of his collaborations...oh the collaborations! Dr. Ralph Stanley, Buddy Miller, Robert Hunter, Nick Lowe, Roland White, Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell and many more. Enjoy my conversation with the King of Americana Jim Lauderdale!

In Enneagram-speak, Enneagram Twos are called The Helpers.  They are some of the most loving, kind, supportive, upbeat, and—when healthy—genuinely helpful to other people.  Their underlying motivation is to feel loved and needed. But sometimes that need to be needed can lead to burn out. But, why listen to me talk about The Helper when you can hear it from those who actually live it?  In this week's episode of Typology, I brought together a panel of Twos to describe what it's like in the mind of The Helper.  So, tune in and listen as the loud-laughing, contentedly uncool mom of three teenagers, Tia Coffey,  Vanderbilt University fundraising specialist and stand-up comic, Geoff Little, and singer-songwriter-author, Andrew Greer join me to talk about finding the balance between giving enough and giving to the point of burn out. Tia Coffey spends her workdays as an executive assistant, her evenings as a student, and her free time drinking wine, hiking, having theological conversations with friends, or hanging with her kids and an anxious chihuahua named Napoleon.  Geoff Little works by day as a fundraising specialist at Vanderbilt University, but after hours he spirals into a whirl of outgoing pursuits. He loves spoken word live performances, including stand-up comedy. He is former co-host of TenX9 Nashville, a critically acclaimed storytelling group.  He founded (and still leads) Nashville's  Beer & Hymns public singing group phenomenon, which sells out Nashville rock club Mercy Lounge on occasion (don't miss this year's St. Patrick's Day Pub Sing!).  He is married to his lovely wife, Tara, and on a good day, she lets him jog with her in the nearby Warner Parks, graciously slowing down her pace.   Andrew Greer is a multiple Dove Award-nominated singer-songwriter and respected author, known for his old soul sound and thoughtful prose. The native Texan-turned-Tennessean's folk-gospel discography displays a deep affection for vintage spiritual songs, instinctively captured on his critically acclaimed Angel Band hymn series—reaching the Top 10 on Amazon and iTunes' mainstream charts upon release. With a love for facilitating conversations that dig deep, Andrew co-created and co-hosts the video podcast, Dinner Conversations with Mark Lowry and Andrew Greer: Turning the Light on One Question at a Time. The conversations-centered series debuted at #1 on iTunes Religion & Spirituality chart last year, and is now syndicated on television nationwide.  Andrew has also authored two books— Transcending Mysteries: Who is God, and What Does He Want From Us? (Thomas Nelson) co-authored with Ginny Owens, and Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth: Spiritual Conversations Inspired by the Life and Lyrics of Rich Mullins (Worthy Publishing).

Guest: Geoff Little.  Like all interviews, this is a snapshot in time of a personal journey.  Geoff is the son of the head of the Christian Broadcasting Network, second only to Pat Robertson himself.  Geoff is in that rock-and-a-hard-place space of identifying as Christian but embarrassed by it every day.  But, since we could easily make a case that Jesus would be embarrassed by today’s Christianity, it begs the question, is Geoff more or less of a Christian?  This is where SO many Americans are today—wanting to hang onto Jesus but disgusted by what poses as Christianity today.  You can hear the tension in his words, of not wanting to throw Christianity under the bus while being brutally honest with himself about what he sees.   Geoff is the founder of the Beer and Hymns movement in Nashville.  In fact, there’s one coming up Thursday, April 30th, 7:30pm at Mercy Lounge in Nashville.  $5 in advance/$8 at the door, and I think that includes a ticket for one beer.  Geoff experiments with stand-up comedy and story-telling.  You can YouTube him and get a feel for his sensibilities.  He’s one of my best friends in middle Tennessee.  I think you’re gonna like him.  We taped this show on April 5th, 2015 in my backyard.  Geoff provided the beer.   Bob & I will be at ReAsonCon 2015 in Hickory NC April 25th.  Hope to see you there. Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, TuneIn and most podcast platforms.  If you’re feeling grateful for our podcast, Patreon.com is like a tip jar for our work.
