The first wave of bands have been announced for 2025, and it's a tsunami worth diving into.Karnivool, Melvins, Rolo Tomassi, Kylesa, Between the Buried and Me playing Colors, The Fall of Troy playing Doppelgänger and not just one, but two We Lost The Sea sets, including "the greatest post rock album ever"... Departure Songs.Plenty to get swept away by but first, what's the issue with international bank transfers, music award bashes and agents selling you a dummy! Curly fucking Wurly, indeed. We go again, every Thursday morning.
Coming in from the swamps of Savannah, GA. this week with James May of Black Tusk. We are talking about "The Way Forward" their newest release. While often mentioned in the same weed-infused breath as Baroness and Kylesa, Black Tusk are a different beast. These swamp monsters have never strayed far from their roots in metal, sludge and punk, though their last album found them fighting just to stay afloat after bassist Jonathan Athon's passing. The Way Forward is just that. This album charges straight-on behind their new lineup, which includes former collaborators Chris "Scary" Adams and bassist Derek Lynch. Please keep in mind that if you rate and review the show the algorithm seems to like that, and if you like the show, please share and recommend it to anyone else in your circle who likes metal. Much love and respect. MRJ. Episode 1 of Season 4 is upon us! John Baizely is the rhythm guitarist and singer for Savannah, Georgia based Baroness. He is also and prolific painter and has contributed works to a wide range of artists (Kylesa, Metallica, Pig Destroyer, Gillian Welch, Flight of the Concords) on posters, t-shirts and record cover design. In this episode the two discuss Johns's musical background and how that has shaped him to be the guitarist, singer and artist he is today. John shares the idea behind self releasing his work and his why he is driven to break the mold of "metal" with alternate approaches to gear and songwriting. They dig into some Les Paul talk and we hear a couple tunes. Baroness John Baizely Episode support by Distrokid and Jim Dunlop
Sometimes we feel a certain urge to highlight and showcase musicians that not enough people take notice of and Edley O'Dowd is surely one of them. He has played with some of the most remarkable musicians of the last 50 years and is surely a jack-of-all-trades. One more reason to talk to Edley is surely that he is one of the most humble, most reserved and most selfless persons I have ever had the chance to talk to. Please enjoy the hell out of this interview! Kylesa, Blondie, Psychic TV, Genesis P-Orridge, Toilet Boys and many, many, many more. That is the list of musicians/projects that Edley O'Dowd has been involved with throughout the course of his life in the music scene somewhere between Post-Punk, Industrial, Avantgarde, Ambient, Noise and even Sludge. Being a visual artist and a drummer by trade, he is a man of many talents who is such a nice person that it comes as no surprise that many different people want to work with him. Now he just released a new record called F(our)-ward on the Italian 13 label (find the label's store here). The record showcases many of Ed's talents and especially his powerful, shifty, diverse drumming - we had a lot to talk about and we are sure you can understand some of Ed's songs a bit better when watching our video below! You can listen to F(our)-Ward here on Bandcamp Enjoy our talk and enjoy Edley's engaging music!

Since forming as teenagers at the College of William & Mary in 2005, heavy rockers Caustic Casanova have experienced their fair share of ups and downs. Having weathered lineup changes, life threatening injuries and relentless DIY touring, the group's highly eclectic sound has made them favorites in a crowded scene. Stereo Embers wrote of the Washington, DC based upstarts: “Caustic Casanova is one of the most excitingly innovative bands on the planet…the band's at home in psych, prog, metal, punk, and seemingly every other genre in the galaxy.” 2013 saw the band almost fall apart when drummer/vocalist Stefanie Zaenker endured serious injuries to her wrists that put her ability to drum in jeopardy. However, Caustic Casanova persevered, and by 2014, Zaenker, alongside bassist/vocalist Francis Beringer and guitarist Andrew Yonki had opened for sludge titans Kylesa and were signed to their label, Retro Futurist Records, allowing them to take things to the next level. The band toured heavily in support of their critically acclaimed 2015 LP Breaks, slugging it out both with Kylesa and on their own. Between 2013 and 2018 they also released a trio of EPs for their Pantheon series, where they paired original material with classics by Pentagram, the Melvins and Weedeater. This hard work led to a deal with Magnetic Eye Records, who in October 2019 released CC's latest record God How I Envy The Deaf, which won two Washington Area Music Awards in 2020, for best hard rock album and best hard rock song (“Filth Castle”). As CC looks to the future, they're already recording the next album with their longtime producer J. Robbins (Jawbox) at Magpie Cage Recording Studio in Baltimore. Newly a four piece with the addition of guitarist Jake Kimberley, this relentlessly loud band is excited to see what sonic alchemies their genre mashing and off the wall songwriting will conjure up next. Road hardened rock and roll warriors through and through, Caustic Casanova plan on showcasing their “muscular, riff-roaring, bass-fuzzed blend of metal and hard rock, flavored with doses of noise and stoned psychedelia” (Creative Loafing) all across the world.
We kick off today's episode with corrosive new tracks from black metal masters Ruins of Beverast, Paysage d'Hiver, Spectral Wound and Wode!!! We'll also wreak havoc on your eardrums with some wanton death metal destruction courtesy of Venom Prison, Nekrovault and Occult Burial, and we'll hear Baptists, Kylesa and Napalm Death tackle punishing covers of some of their favourite '80s hardcore punk bands. The second half of the show features crushing, blasted-out doom from Vile Creature and Cardinal Wyrm, as well as new lighter-lifting anthems from Haunt, Sandstorm and Gama Bomb. We'll also get a wicked dose of break-neck thrash with new music from Teutonic legends Sodom and the Brazilian powerhouse Nervosa, and we'll also dig a track by Bay Area rattleheads EXODUS from their landmark 1985 debut Bonded By Blood out of The Graveyard! Let's get RAD!!!!

A business/casual interview with friends and road-mates Laura Pleasants and Corey Barhorst, who for 15 years crushed the underground metal scene in Kylesa. Buying a used van from an ex cop! Touring in vans without seats! Touring in cars that aren't vans! None of these are good ideas! We also discuss the lifestyle choices one makes to support 'the life' and the various vermin it can attract. A breakdown in Pennsylvania goes from bummer, to horror, to just-kinda-weird-and-funny. All this for the low low price of your time.

New episode out now. Pleased to announce STRANDED BY CHOICE are back with their third studio album LOST BY DESIGN RELEASED 28TH August 2020 About the band Rich Feeley - Bass, vocals Levi Luoma - Drums Scott Waddington – Guitar Sean Young – Guitar Montana based hard rock quartet Stranded by Choice are back with their third studio album 'Lost By Design' which is set for release August 28th 2020. The band recently released a snippet of the album with their new video 'Ground Hog' which has been well received amongst their fan base. The album boasts heavy riffs, soaring vocals and crushing grooves. It's a wonderful mix of country-style rock, hard rock and in parts, has a metal infusion. Stranded By Choice was formed over a decade ago against the rugged backdrop of central Montana. In an area where the vast plains meet the mountains and the mountains meet the sky, the veteran rockers have successfully captured the intensity and magnitude of the landscape from which they were forged. Throughout the years Stranded By Choice have refined their unique blend of classic rock, metal and country, both on the road and in the studio. With a thick dual guitar sound and a simplistic yet powerful approach to their song writing, SBC creates music that is catchy, listenable, and heavy. While the influence of classics bands like Black Sabbath, Mountain and Thin Lizzy is obvious in both their studio albums and live shows, the band also pulls heavily from bands like Red Fang, Clutch and Mastodon. This diverse approach allows Stranded By Choice to fit comfortably on a wide range of bills, from punk to metal and beyond. 2020 marks the release of Stranded By Choice's third full-length album Lost By Design. Perhaps their best effort yet, Lost By Design perfectly captures the SBC sound. The album is accompanied by a music video for the new single “Groundhog” which like all of their videos was filmed on a working hay farm. This literal backyard imagery creates stunning visual accompaniment to the band's music. Stranded By Choice has toured the Northwest and Canada extensively and has shared the stage with Red Fang, Kylesa, Blacktop Mojo, Stabbing Westward, Black Wizard, Conan, The Kyle Gass Band, D.O.A. and many more great bands. “We had no sort of time crunch when making this album and that allowed us to really take a step back and get a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve. We recorded most of the songs as demos first then made changes and refined them before the actual tracking. By doing that we let the song grow and develop naturally instead of just forcing out ideas. As a result I think we've achieved our most creative and authentic album yet.” - Rich Feeley, singer/bass player in Stranded By Choice Band links Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stranded_by_choice/channel/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/StrandedByChoice/ My thoughts A really great album, if you love bands like Clutch, Mastodon, then this is going to be right up your street, a great southern rock sounding album, perfect for them sunny days with a cold one, this is a band that if there was ever a classic rock Sunday at a festival like download festival this band would need to be on the bill. In this weeks show we chat to everyones favourite magician and seeker of paranormal-proof, 'The Amazing' James Randi. James is well known throughout the United States for shedding light on con-men and women that claim to posses paranormal gifts. One of his most famous cases, of which he has written a book, is Uri Geller who, as you'll hear in the show, still manages to maintain a successful career even after numerous 'outings' by the likes of James. In this interview we discuss James's million-dollar reward for proof of the paranormal, Oprah Winfrey's belief in 'The Secret' (or Magick for housewives, as it should be titled), rouge faith-healers, Johny Carson, the Large Hadron Collider and why people need to believe in quackery! Also in this episode, Out There Radio and DisInfoCast host Raymond Wiley stops by to make an announcement, including some exciting news for some of the Sitting Now crew.We finally get Claire on the show with her 'Weird Weekly News', and we discuss all the latest features and articles on the site.Music this week comes courtesy of Kylesa and their amazing tune Hallow Severer from the album Time Will Fuse Its Worth, thanks to those guys for giving us permission to play the track and buy the album, it's great!Enjoy!Official James Randi Biography: James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but today he is best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.Randi has pursued "psychic" spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of faith healers, investigated homeopathic water "with a memory," and generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool over the public's eyes in the name of the supernatural. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 1986.On October 19, 1993, the PBS-TV "NOVA" program broadcast a one-hour special dealing with Randi's life work, particularly with his investigations of Uri Geller and various occult and healing claims being made by scientists in Russia. He is the author of numerous books, including The Truth About Uri Geller, The Faith Healers, Flim-Flam!, and An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural. His lectures and television appearances have delighted - and vexed - audiences around the world."We may disagree with Randi on certain points, but we ignore him at our peril."-Carl SaganIn 1996, the James Randi Education Foundation was established to further Randi's work. Randi's long-standing challenge to psychics now stands as a $1,000,000 prize administered by the Foundation. It remains unclaimed.

On this very special episode, we welcome our very special and first-ever guest, Amy Shostak! Amy is comedy jewel and metal wizard, and leads the lads down the hazy path of Stoner and Sludge metal! In this episode we: Roll up some jazz cabbage and talk about Weedeater's cool carny vocals; Blaze some Devil's lettuce and talk about how Sleep makes you want to put out burning pillows with wet blankets; Puff on a left-handed cigarette and talk about the Melvins creating a visceral, two-drummer-induced dreamlike state; Dole out some dank-ass nugs and talk about how Kylesa's worth a road trip to Georgia; AND become total weed-heads talking about Mastodon leggings and how much the book Moby Dick totally, totally sucks. Plus we discuss Fraz's famous Napalm Death hoodie, Devin's famous Maui shirt, and answer Twitter questions! It's the Stoner/Sludge episode! Congrats, Julian!
...shit! iTunes will probably get mad if I swear on the episode title, so there you go. Sometimes I wonder if anyone actually reads these descriptions. Well, in case you do, here are this week's links for new music: Be'lakor, Hatebreed, Lacuna Coil, Whitechapel, Astronoid, Unlocking the Truth, Oracles, Fallujah. Also, Kylesa are done, and as you probably know, Prince passed away. Well, this week we talk about the external and internal perception of metal as intellectual/ignorant, then we talk about people who "leave" metal and feel that it's for "angsty teens" and that we should "grow up". Can you feel the salt already? Also, a brief tangent about where some MTV-metal artists are now.

Here is the 8th installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast. While Kylesa were in town on the Malaysian leg of their South East Asian tour, I was able to snag guitarist/vocalist Phillip Cope for an interview. Of particular note is an extended discussion about his days in Damad. One of the best interviews I've done, except the parts where you can hear the 3 cups of coffee I had right before. Thankfully, Phillip was patient enough to put up with my ADHD and rapid fire stammering. Many thanks to Ci Chaan and Emi Norazalli for helping to organize this interview; and of course, for bringing Kylesa to KL in the first place. www.dreamsofconsciousness.com Scapegoat Taken from the album Static Tensions Shatter the Clock Taken from the album To Walk A Middle Course Identity Defined taken from the album Time Will Fuse Its Worth To Forget taken from the Violitionist Sessions EP Damad - Landscape taken from the album Burning Cold Damad - One Word taken from the Damad/Meatjack split CD Low Tide taken from the album Ultraviolet Tired Climb taken from the album Spiral Shadow

Laura Pleasants is a guitar player/singer/songwriter in Kylesa. Kylesa is a heavy metal band from Savannah, GA that has been re-defining themselves and their genre for years. Typically referred to as sludge metal, doom metal or stoner metal because people feel the need to categorize everything, there is a lot more to them than that. … Continue reading →
NWP welcomes chef Brandon Baltzley. Brandon's new book "Nine Lives, a Chef's Journey From Chaos to Control" is making it way up the New York Times Best Seller List. I LOVE the way he dishes on top chef's like Paula Dean! Raw, gritty and funny. This was one of the best memoirs, I have read in ages! Brandon Baltzley is a Louisiana-born, low-country raised, nomadic chef, musician, writer, lover, fighter and part-time schitzo. After being raised in the kitchens of gay-bars and numerous bistros, he left to tour with the metal act, Kylesa. Upon leaving Savannah’s sludge-metal scene, he rekindled his love for food, and has been steadily making long-lasting impressions everywhere he decides to plate a dish.
