Wisdom of the Masters
The Sophia of Christ ~ Gnosticism

A reading of selected excerpts/verses from the gnostic text, The Sophia of Christ. The Sophia The Christ, also known as the Wisdom of Jesus Christ, is a Gnostic text that was first discovered in the Berlin Codex (a Codex purchased in Cairo in 1896 and given to the Berlin Museum which also contains the Gospel of Mary, the Apocryphon of John, and a summary of the Act of Peter). More famously, the Sophia of Jesus Christ is also among the many Gnostic tractates in the Nag Hammadi codices, discovered in Egypt in 1945. The Berlin-Codex manuscript (as opposed to its contents) probably dates to c. AD 400, and the Nag-Hammadi manuscript has been dated to the 300s. However, these are complemented by a few fragments in Greek dating from the 200s, indicating an earlier date for the contents. Sophia should be understood in its ordinary meaning as "wisdom", analogous to the titles Wisdom of Solomon and Wisdom of Sirach.

An interview with Dr. Samuel Zinner Dr. Samuel Zinner describes the ancient Apocryphon (or Secret Book) of James, then, focusing on two common elements in so-called ‘gnosticism'—the meaning of the demiurge and ascending—he shows how this text does not neatly fit any category. It includes no reference to demiurge, but it does involve a lengthy and unusual description of Jesus, Peter, and James all ascending.  Inclusion in the Nag Hammadi collection does not necessarily define something as ‘gnostic,' as this text illustrates.  Zinner is an award-winning author and scholar of Holocaust studies, ecumenism, modern and ancient languages, literature and history, and has been published internationally in a variety of languages by Oxford University Press, de Gruyter, and others. He has contributed articles to Religions Journal and served as peer review referee for several academic journals. He is also a documentary script writer, having worked with Jean-Claude Bragard, the creator of award-winning programs for the BBC. Zinner has collaborated with eminent scholars on the Dead Sea Scrolls and Hebrew scriptures. He's currently an editor for the forthcoming Origins and Applications of Language and Number with contributions from several eminent scholars, and he presents at conferences such as "The Bible and the Qur'an: Comparative Studies” at the Shahid Beshita University in Tehran. His current book that we discuss in this podcast interview is The Apocryphon of James (NHC 1,2), a scholarly work on the text more popularly known as the Secret Book of James.

In this episode, David and Gene begin their exploration of "The Secret Gospel of John," also known as the "Apocryphon of John," a pivotal text in the Sethian Gnostic tradition. They discuss the text's history, its multiple versions, and its significance as a comprehensive presentation of Gnostic cosmology and theology. The discussion delves into the concept of the Monad, the ultimate unity in Gnostic thought, comparing it to similar ideas in Pythagoreanism and Kabbalah, and exploring its characteristics as the ineffable, unnameable source of all qualities. In the process, David and Gene draw parallels with modern cosmology and to the symbolism of the point within a circle, relating it to biological concepts like seeds and zygotes, while always emphasizing the text's primary focus, which is on the inner world of the mind. This episode introduces Barbelo, the first emanation from the Monad, representing forethought and the beginning of psychic evolution. David and Gene examine the qualities attributed to Barbelo and how these relate to human consciousness. They conclude by discussing the "birth" of Christ as a metaphor for the self-reflective development of mind, emphasizing the importance of understanding these texts as spiritual guidebooks rather than mere stories. This is the first episode of a multi-part series on the “Secret Gospel of John.” It begins the exegesis of the text, and also stage for a deeper exploration of Gnostic philosophy as a path of spiritual discovery and growth.Deep Dive:Secret Book of JohnChapters:01:15 Introduction02:39 The Apocryphon of John04:28 History of the Text07:02 Secret Book of John11:06 The Monad14:42 Point in the Circle20:22 Barbelo25:13 The Birth of Christ27:57 ConclusionsResources:MiddleChamber.org - Symposium on Masonic EsotericaThe Nag Hammadi ScripturesThe Apocryphon of John - Frederik Wisse TranslationGnosis.org - The Gnosis ArchiveThe Red Book: A Reader's Edition by Carl Jung

On his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads, blasphemous names. 2 The beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. 3 One of his heads looked like it had been wounded fatally. His fatal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled at the beast. 4 They worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” 5 A mouth speaking great things and blasphemy was given to him. Authority to make war for forty-two months was given to him. 6 He opened his mouth for blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his dwelling, those who dwell in heaven. 7 It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him. 8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed. 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be slain with the sword, he must be slain. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints. -The Apocryphon of John- In his arrogance, Yaldabaoth boasted to the other archons that: “I am God and there is no other God beside me!” _________________________________________

Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast EP384 Origin and Birth of Yaldabaoth/Sakla: Sophia, the wisdom of afterthought, conceived a thought without the consent of the spirit and her partner, resulting in the birth of Yaldabaoth, a flawed and misshapen being, cast away by Sophia due to her ignorance. Yaldabaoth's Rule and Creation: Yaldabaoth took power from his mother and created realms with luminous fire. He mated with mindlessness and produced authorities, as well as seven kings for the heavens and five for the abyss. Attributes and Names of Yaldabaoth: Yaldabaoth, also known as Sakla and Samael, proclaimed himself as the only god but was ignorant of his origins. He created powers and angels with different faces, claiming supremacy over them. Sophia's Repentance: Sophia repented for her actions, realizing her mistake and the consequences of Yaldabaoth's rule. Her repentance led to her elevation above Yaldabaoth but below the holy realms, with a mission to restore what she lacked. The Appearance of Humanity: The human child is revealed, causing fear among the rulers and angels. Yaldabaoth and others conspire to create a human being resembling God to give them light. Creation of Adam and Eve: Adam is created with contributions from various authorities, and life is breathed into him. Eve is later fashioned from Adam's side, and the enlightened afterthought hides within Adam. Defilement and Imprisonment: Yaldabaoth defiles Eve and produces two sons, Elohim and Yahweh (Cain and Abel), to rule over the elements. The first ruler curses humanity and cloaks them in darkness, while Sophia's spirit is sent to heal and restore humanity's knowledge. In essence, Yaldabaoth represents the flawed ruler who defies the natural order, leading to the fall of Sophia and the creation of humanity, all within a complex narrative of divine ignorance, repentance, and redemption. In his arrogance, Yaldabaoth boasted to the other archons that: “I am God and there is no other God beside me!” The Apocryphon of John Note: Always do your own research in regard to any theory. In many branches of Sant Mat we have a five-name (panch naam) mantra (five simran words). These are sacred names of God associated with the first five planes, heavenly realms of creation. From the glossary of Sant Mat we read: "Simran means Remembrance: repetition of names or thoughts; in Sant Mat, the simran of worldly thoughts is controlled through the Simran of the Five Charged Names, repeated by an initiate throughout the day, and when sitting for meditation, as a means of collecting the thought-currents at the Third Eye Center. These Divine names are also used as passwords of sorts to higher planes, and provide protection from Negative Power influences." (Repeat the Name)   Today: all about the Five Names of Sant Mat, their proper use as an essential technique to concentrate at the Third Eye Center and go within according to Hazur Baba Sawan Singh, Sant Garib Das, from the Satsang Discourses of Sant Ram Singh, as well as there is discussion about the origins and history of the Five Names dating back to the Kabir-Sant Dharam Das line of Masters. Also explored: the Five Sufi Names, and about the importance of the Most High name Radhasoami used by Sant Garib Das (Anmol Vachan) and Swami Ji Maharaj (Sar Bachan Radhaswami Poetry). In Sant Mat mysticism there are not five or seven deities but one God, the one Lord of the Soul  manifesting at the various levels of creation. As Guru Nanak has said in his Morning Prayer (Jap Ji): "There is One God, Truth is His Name." (One Love)   Simran is described as a Bhakti practice to be done in a spirit of love and devotion, with passages on this from Sant Tulsi Sahib and Kabir. (God is Love)   Mention is made of a mystical Jewish Gnostic sect of antiquity referred to by scholars as the Sethians who also had a five-name mantra approach, only using five Hebrew names, which are to be found embedded in certain Nag Hammadi and other texts. Recommended are two books that compare contemporary Sant Mat with mystical Judaism including Kabbalah. The program concludes with selections from the mystical poetry of a mysterious figure called "the Master" and "the Teacher of Righteousness", mystic verses found in the Psalm Scroll of the Dead Sea Scrolls mainly about the experience of Divine Light, but one might also notice references to reincarnation, the liberation of the soul, the Third Eye, and spiritually hearing the Divine Word or Spiritual Sound. Note: practices associated with contemporary Sant Mat were also known in earlier times by followers of various cousin mystical movements and schools of spirituality that have existed over the centuries. Even ideas that became associated Christianity and Gnostic movements such as seeking out living masters or living ones (Odes of Solomon, Gospel of Thomas), vegetarian ethics, humane treatment of animals (scriptures attributed to Enoch and Isaiah), initiations, baptism in rivers of living water, a new covenant (Dead Sea Scroll texts), genesis interpretations that include a lesser demiurge figure and a sophia wisdom figure (Septuagint, Apocryphon of John), the view that the soul needs to ascend through a series of heavenly regions (Book of First Enoch, Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice, Ascension of Isaiah, Ginza Rabba) are ideas developed during the Second Temple period of Judaism. Continuations and interpretations of Judaic ideas were adopted by many sects and spiritual movements during the first and later centuries AD. Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast EP382 The Apocryphon of John, is a Gnostic text found among the Nag Hammadi library, a collection of ancient Gnostic texts discovered in Egypt in 1945. The Apocryphon of John is attributed to John the Apostle but is considered to be a product of early Gnostic Christian communities. This text presents a unique cosmological and theological perspective, and the following focuses on "The Four Luminaries." The Self-Conceived God and the Anointed: The passage begins by describing the source of the luminaries as the "self-conceived god" and the "anointed." The "anointed" likely refers to Christ, who is associated with light and divinity in various Christian traditions. The Three Beings: The three beings mentioned are identified as will, thought, and life. These are fundamental aspects of divine existence in the Gnostic cosmology. Will: Represents the divine will or intention. Thought: Represents divine intellect or wisdom. Life: Represents the essence of divine life. The Four Powers: The four powers are understanding, grace, perception, and thoughtfulness. These powers emanate from the divine and contribute to the order and structure of the created world. The Four Luminaries and Twelve Eternal Realms: The luminaries are spiritual entities associated with different realms, and each luminary has three accompanying realms. Here's a breakdown: Harmozel (First Luminary): Eternal Realms: Grace, Truth, Form. Oroiael (Second Luminary): Eternal Realms: Afterthought, Perception, Memory. Daveithai (Third Luminary): Eternal Realms: Understanding, Love, Idea. Eleleth (Fourth Luminary): Eternal Realms: Perfection, Peace, Sophia. These luminaries and realms collectively stand before the "self-conceived god," indicating their divine order and connection to the ultimate source. The Holy Spirit and Divine Will: The passage concludes by mentioning that everything, including the establishment of the realms and luminaries, was done by the will of the Holy Spirit (Mother) through the self-conceived one (Father). This emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit (Mother) in the divine creative process. In summary, this passage from the Apocryphon of John outlines a Gnostic cosmology, detailing the emanation of luminaries and eternal realms from the self-conceived god, with a focus on the qualities and powers associated with each luminary. Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast EP368 ĕlôhîym: The word “elohim" has its origins in Hebrew and is used in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament. It is a plural noun that is often translated as "God" in English however this isn't a good usage. While the term "Elohim" is grammatically plural, it is widely understood within monotheistic frameworks as a singular, supreme deity. In the opening chapters of Genesis, “elohim" is used in the creation narrative: "In the beginning, gods (elohim) created the heavens and the earth." Proponents of the theory that suggests a polytheistic background argue that the use of a plural noun for God might reflect an earlier stage of Israelite religion where a divine council or assembly of gods was acknowledged. In English translations of the Bible, when the term "Elohim" is capitalized, it is an editorial decision made by translators to convey reverence and specificity to a particular chosen cultural deity. This convention aligns with the broader practice of capitalizing pronouns and titles for the God of monotheistic religions as a sign of respect and recognition of the singular, supreme nature of that deity.  Today we will examine the secrets of the Elohim's power and how we can become “gods” and ascend in consciousness just like them (our creators). And I placed for myself a throne, and I sat down on it. And then to the light I spoke: ‘You go up higher than the throne, and be solidified much higher than the throne|, and become the foundation for the highest things. - Second Book Of Enoch And I wrote 366 books about the great secrets of God, which God revealed and related to Enoch; and he spoke with him face to face. - Second Book Of Enoch In his arrogance, Yaldabaoth boasted to the other archons that: “I am God and there is no other God beside me!” - The Apocryphon of John In a state of high delight Enki, the king of the Abzu, again justly praises himself in his majesty: "I am the lord, I am one whose word is reliable, I am one who excels in everything. - Enki And The World Order × I Explore Supernatural Mythōs. The Key to Unlock the Inner Door of Spirituality

There has always been a Living Mystic Path of the Masters operating in the world across the many centuries, across the ages of humanity. The Path of the Masters or Way of the Saints is in possession of the key that unlocks the inner door of spirituality: the embodied wisdom of qualified teachers, competent masters, that guide souls into developing their own meditation practice to successfully explore inner space, the path that ascends back to the Supreme Being in the Ocean of Love and Spirit. Here and there, from time to time since the beginning of time schools of spirituality have appeared as Lights in the darkness. Eventually they fade away, or sometimes get commandeered and transformed into more conventional earthly materialistic religions, with their sacred texts edited and their original saints declared to be heretics. As old branches of the mystic tree of life fall to the ground and turn to dust they are replaced with new living branches. "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." (Seneca) Such has been the history of the irrepressible saints and mystics on planet earth, this world of changes (samsara).     Bawa Harnam Singh once asked Hazur Baba Sawan Singh, "'What difference is there between your faith and Guru Nanak's teachings?'   "'None at all', the Great Master replied. Nanak, Kabir, Dadu, Paltu, Tulsidas, Jagjiwan, Shams Tabriz, Maulana Rumi, Khwaja Hafiz, Mansur, Baba Farid, Mujaddid Al Sani, and all other Saints to whatever country, clime or religion they belonged, preached the same truth. The principles, the method, the teachings always remain the same, though the 'key' is transferred from one house to another after some time. It is said that 'God fulfills Himself in many ways lest one good old custom should corrupt the world'. At one time the 'key' to unlock the Inner Door was in the house of Kabir. Then it shifted to Guru Nanak, where it remained for ten generations. Then it went to Tulsi Sahib, from where it came to Swami Ji (Seth Shiv Dayal Ji). This is the law of nature. Thank you for listening!   Kyle Shutt is an American musician widely known for his guitar playing in the seminal stoner metal band, The Sword, since 2003. From the punk and indie clubs of Austin, TX to arenas all over the world on Metallica's World Magnetic Tour, The Sword climbed the Billboard Top 200 charts to number 17 with their fourth album, Apocryphon. Having played well over a thousand shows, The Sword changed the landscape of heavy metal during the early 2000's and their influence can be heard far and wide in music today. The Sword will be supporting Primus on their A Farwell to Kings tour in 2021. Not one to rest on his laurels, in 2017 Shutt produced Doom Side of the Moon, a heavy metal reimagining of Pink Floyd's greatest hits with an accompanying psychedelic live show spectacular. The completely independent endeavor landed at number 82 on the Billboard Top 200 charts the week of its release. A followup album will be coming in 2022. Shutt turned to crowdfunding in 2018 with the undertaking of a solo album in which he wrote every song and played every instrument over a 14 day period. The Kickstarter campaign went over its goal by 25% and the ensuing support tour saw him share the stage with Electric Six and even included a slot on the Exit 111 Festival. More punk than metal, Shutt's solo career set him apart from being just a stoner rock guitarist and set the stage for many of his other endeavors. A followup solo album will also be arriving in 2022. During the coronavirus pandemic, Shutt kicked his creativity into overdrive with a painting career that saw over 150 paraody versions of himself painted onto copies of his solo album LPs and were sold directly to fans. With subjects from Star Wars characters to superheroes, no pop culture icon was safe from his self portraits. Shutt also launched another successful crowdfunding effort during the pandemic to write the first in his series of lighthearted memoirs, “Written in Stoned”. The Kickstarter campaign once again went over its goal by 25% and the accompanying parody images promoting the book on his social media accounts further cemented his signature brand of humor in the eyes of his fans. At the turn of 2021 The High Way with Kyle Shutt was launched, a self produced podcast featuring musicians and entertainers conversing with Shutt about life in the industry. Guests included Neil Fallon (Clutch), Dave Wyndorf (Monster Magnet) and Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and was immediately embraced by fans. Although he launched the podcast in an admittedly over saturated market, the program quickly rose to number 23 on the Apple Podcast Music Interview Charts in the U.S. as well as other charts all over the world. Having built his fan base without anything but hard work and relentless dedication to his craft in the face of ever changing adversity, Shutt is a unique force in an unsure world and isn't going away any time soon.

The Three Steles Of Seth - Gnostic Text of the Nag Hammadi Library Audiobook. The Three Steles of Seth is a 3rd-century Sethian Gnostic text from the New Testament apocrypha. The Three Steles (or Tablets) of Seth are in essence, three hymns written in adoration for the more abstract being, Barbelo, from the perspective of the archetype of Seth (“Emmakha Seth”) and his father Adam (or “Geradamas”). The Steles themselves were allegedly written by Emmakha Seth, a spiritual archetype of Seth, the son of Adam and Eve and founder of the gnostic race (Immovable race, Seed of Seth), and thus are considered pseudepigraphic. The hymns themselves presuppose familiarity with the generally accepted Sethian Gnostic mythical structure as presented in Zostrianos and The Apocryphon of John. The Secret Book (Apocryphon) Of John - Gnostic Text From The Nag Hammadi Library - Full Audio Book. The Secret Book of John, also called the Apocryphon of John or the Secret Revelation of John, is a 2nd-century Sethian Gnostic Christian text of secret teachings and contains some of the most extensive detailing of classic dualistic Gnostic mythology that has survived; as one of the principal texts of the Nag Hammadi library, it is an essential text of study for anyone interested in Gnosticism. It describes Jesus appearing and giving secret knowledge (gnosis) to John the Apostle. The author describes it having occurred after Jesus "has gone back to the place from which he came". The Secret Book Of James - Gnostic Tract From The Nag Hammadi, Apocryphon Audio Book With Text. The Apocryphon of James, also known by the translation of its title – the Secret Book of James, is a pseudonymous text amongst the New Testament apocrypha. It describes the secret teachings of Jesus to Peter and James, given after the Resurrection but before the Ascension. To many scholars, the flavor of the sayings appears somewhat gnostic in tone, primarily because its doctrines do not accord with orthodox interpretation of canonical scripture. The manuscript was also found among explicit gnostic teachings in the Nag Hammadi Library - which can be found at https://amzn.to/2lzpFoa Please consider supporting my work and download this audio as part of the ESOTERIC AND OCCULT WISDOM - MASTER COLLECTION (an ongoing collection of Gnostic, alchemical, Hermetic, and related occult/spiritual audio projects that span dozens of hours) at https://altrusiangrace.bandcamp.com/ *JOIN MY PATREON at https://www.patreon.com/altrusiangracemedia *BECOME A YOUTUBE CHANNEL MEMBER at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMzRTOugvDLwhSwJdoSWBZA/join *JOIN THE CULT OF STARRY WISDOM at https://altrusiangrace.bandcamp.com/starry-wisdom-cult *MY TSHIRTS AND DESIGNS ON AMAZON at https://amzn.to/3peS9j3 *MY NEW 2022 MERCH LINE "OCCULT NOUVEAU" at https://amzn.to/3OeUHZL *MY TSHIRTS AND DESIGNS ON TEEPUBLIC at https://teepublic.sjv.io/XxvPDX *LICENSE MY MUSIC FOR YOUR PROJECT at https://www.pond5.com/artist/altrusiangracemedia *MY BOOKS ON AMAZON at https://amzn.to/3oQGh6A As an Amazon Associate I earn a small amount from qualifying purchases and it helps to support my channel. Unlocked after one year for patrons only: The secretive Gnostic stream of Christianity, which taught a radically different metaphysics and spiritual cosmology from "orthodox" doctrine in the first four hundred years of the church, was largely lost to history, until 1945, when a camel-herder in a remote part of Egypt stumbled upon an old ceremic jar with 13 massive books containing 52 ancient Gnostic texts. We consider what the so-called "Nag Hammadi LIbrary," which may have been hidden in the desert to protect it from destruction, reveals about the origins and importance of the Gnostics' secret teachings. There's no doubt ZZ Top trademarked Texas boogie. And over 30 years later, the Sword furthered the Lonestar shuffle's legacy by darkening it. The Austin outfit's 2006 debut Age of Winters combined the rhythmic bounce of Tres Hombres with the power and might of Master of Reality. The cross-pollination of Gibbons and Iommi continued in 2008's Gods of the Earth, with heavier right-hand picking and tempos shading towards thrash-y Priest and Thin Lizzy's "Emerald." Traces of proggy psychedelia, like 2112 Rush and late-'70s Genesis, turned 2010's concept album Warped Riders into a swirling voyage of sci-fi conquest and space exploration, with the music matching the otherworldly narrative. And 2012's Apocryphon saw the band settle into themselves, collectively cherry-picking all the things that worked on the previous three albums. Songs like "Cloak of Feathers" and the title track show their musical certainty. High Country, from three years later, showcases a once-singular-sounding band finding a home between Houston and Birmingham that could be best classified as classic mid-'70s hard rock. And 2018's Used Future—as its cover depicts—shows the band comfortably, calmly, confidently pressing the accelerator of their Bombshell Betty 1952 Buick Super Riviera and racing towards their own horizon. This fall 2021 run had the Sword members—J.D. Cronise (guitar/vocals), Kyle Shutt (guitars), Bryan Richie (bass/keyboards), and Santiago "Jimmy" Vela III (drums)—handling double duty, with a headline tour woven around opening shows for Primus. Before their top-of-the-bill show at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, Shutt, Cronise, and Richie showed PG how consolidating gear (and volume) has helped them sharpen their blade. Does Paul show any knowledge of the contents of the 3 synoptic gospels or the one of John? Which biblical criticism books would you wish were translated in English that have not been yet? The Old Testament has numerous battles where the victorious army kills everybody in a town except for the virgin females, which they kidnap and force into marriages. The Apocryphon of John Collection (The Secret Revelation of John - The Secret Book of John) “I have come to teach you about what is, and what was, and what will be in order for you to understand the invisible world, and the world that is visible, and the immovable race of perfect humanity.” Among the several dozen ancient Gnostic manuscripts rediscovered in modern times, the Secret Book of John is generally agreed to be the most important. It has been called the locus classicus for the Gnostic mythological system – in sum, it is the preeminent “Gnostic Gospel”, a sacred reservoir for the defining essence of Gnostic myth and revelation.  It breathes with the life of vision that vitalized early Christianity, a life suppressed and then largely forgotten in later ages. From a modern reading of this crucially important and recently rediscovered "Gospel", we are granted fundamental insights into the lost foundations of Christian tradition. Apocryphon of John – is the title that appears on the original manuscripts, and by this title the text has been known in scholarly circles over the last fifty years. In Greek, apocryphon literally means “hidden” or “secret”, thus in recent popular literature the title is usually translated as either the Secret Book of John or The Secret Revelation of John.    By its own declaration, the Secret Book of John is a sacred text intended to be shared only with individuals properly prepared to receive its revelation. In second-century Christian communions circulation of the text probably remained restricted.  Amazingly, despite limited circulation and  the effective later efforts by evolving Christian orthodoxy to destroy all such “heretical” scriptures, four separate manuscripts of the Seceret Book of John have survived into our own age. Three of these were found among the Nag Hammadi codices discovered in 1945, while a fourth copy was independently recovered fifty years earlier from another site in Egypt. All four versions date to the fourth century. Three of the four appear to be independently produced Coptic translations of an original text in Greek. To put in context the uniqueness of finding four complete copies of a document of this extreme antiquity, note that we possess only two fairly complete manuscripts of the canonical gospels of equal age (the Codex Vaticanus and Sinaiticus).  Only a few fragments of canonical texts with dates of creation earlier than the fourth century have survived. These four manuscripts of the Apocryphon of John represent some of the oldest known surviving books. From the ancient sands of Egypt, they come to our modern age bearing a timeless message. The Secret Book of John is the one Gnostic text every student seeking to understand the roots of ancient Christianity must read.  At first reading it will seem unlike anything encountered in the New Testament – excepting perhaps the Apocalypse of John. Like the Apocalypse, this too is a revelation text, a secret and sacred vision.  It is the story of God, and by reflection, the story of Humankind – a penetrating psychological reflection on the source of consciousness and the existential predicament of an eternal light indwelling life. It is not an intellectual curiosity, nor is it a text to be "surfed", in the perverse sense of modern internet reading.  As Prof. Karen King notes: In antiquity, readers studied the Secret Revelation of John in order to perfect the divine image of their souls; it was composed, translated, and distributed largely to further salvation—or to refute its claims to aid in salvation. In the modern world, however, it has rarely been read with such goals in mind. It usually finds its place either in the theology of orthodox Christianity as a chapter on Gnostic heresy or in disputes about the historical origins and definition of Gnosticism. Within the academy more narrowly its value largely has to do with intellectual production and prestige, including concerns about tenure and promotion—salvati

Remember that 1980's cough syrup commercial when Chris Robinson said, “I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV”? I wanted to paraphrase these immortal words when I read what actor Joaquin Phoenix of “Gladiator” fame said about his role as Jesus in the upcoming movie, “Mary Magdalene.” Phoenix is not the Son of Man, but he plays him on the big screen. His is a very different Jesus than the one we meet in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Judging by the trailer and the press roll-out, the movie will draw heavily on a second-century Gnostic text known as “the Gospel of Mary.” In a recent interview with Newsweek, Phoenix slammed early Christianity for not canonizing this and other apocryphal writings about Jesus, saying: “Why was Mary's book not included in the Bible? The stench of blatant sexism,” he says, is “inescapable.” Phoenix went even further in another interview: “Somebody made that decision to exclude [Mary Magdalene's] observations and feelings about the life of Christ and her experience. There seems to have been an overt intention to exclude women from that process.” The truth is, no one excluded Mary Magdalene's experiences. Scholars universally agree that she didn't write this so-called gospel. Along with other texts like “the Apocryphon of John,” and “the Sophia of Jesus Christ,” “the Gospel of Mary” was never recognized by the Church as part of the New Testament. The reason is that it is an obvious forgery. The Gospel of Mary is a work of fan-fiction by members of a false religion who attempted to co-opt Jesus for their own purposes. True to the pattern of other Gnostic texts, the “Gospel of Mary” claims that Jesus delivered a private revelation to its namesake that radically contradicts the canonical gospels. Even more, the Mary Magdalene revealed in the Bible is the best response we have to the accusation that early Christianity was sexist. Recall that she is reported as the first witness of the risen Lord—a claim that would have scandalized first-century Jewish readers. In that culture, the testimony of a woman was considered worthless, yet she and several other women were entrusted to take the message of Christ's resurrection back to His disciples, and those disciples were hesitant to believe them. If the four gospels were written to make Jesus' male followers look good at the expense of the women, they did a lousy job. Authors like Alvin J. Schmidt and Rodney Stark have documented that Christianity—far from oppressing women—radically elevated their status in the ancient world. It's hard for us in 2019 to grasp just how revolutionary the Apostle Paul's words were that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” And speaking of important background material, Joaquin Phoenix grew up in a pseudo-Christian cult that seems to have soured him toward religion. While we should be sensitive to that experience, we have to admit he's no expert.  Even so, his unfounded statements and the false story this movie tells will strike many as convincing, in the same way Dan Brown's “The Da Vinci Code” did a few years back. The good news is, we live in what I like to call the “golden age of good arguments.” There is a wealth of apologetic resources available that ably debunks the idea that the Gnostic gospels were unfairly suppressed or that they offer any new information about the life of Jesus. We'll link you to just a few of those resources at BreakPoint.org. The problem isn't that the answers aren't available. The problem is that the answers rarely reach as many people as the falsehoods do from the publishing industry, the media, or Hollywood—which, like the Gnostics of old—never tire of producing false Christianities and false Jesuses. Our job is to learn the answers, to engage in conversations, to dialogue about those answers, and to do our best to set the record straight.

Nothing exists above IT, and nothing existed before IT. IT is Unity and cannot be differentiated. IT is the Father of All and IT exists above All. IT is the Light in which no eye can look. IT is beyond perfection. IT exists outside of time. IT is without qualities and IT contains All qualities. IT is eternal, and IT alone exists.  ~The Apocryphon of John KRISHNA~  I AM the Soul that exists in everything, I AM the beginning, middle, and end of all lives. I AM the Mind dwelling in all things. I AM Light. I AM Consciousness. I AM the eternal Word. I AM the ONE who never changes. I AM the Master over the future, and Lord of death. "I feel great man," enthused Kyle Shutt, guitarist for Austin, Texas stoner rockers The Sword ahead of their sixth studio album Used Future to be released on March 23. "It's a really fresh sound for us. We've been a band a really long time and I'm really excited to take this album out on the road. We wrote it mainly in the studio and I still don't know how to play it all yet (laughs). I'm really excited to jump into that aspect of things. When you make an album and you get ready to release it it's like you sit in front of the computer and send emails and stuff but my favorite part is when we finally get to leave all that behind and get out on the road and play some shows."While undoubtedly people will try to classify Used Future based on previous records, Shutt says the album and its contents can be summed up pretty easily. "I would call it rock and roll," he shrugged. "I've been listening to a lot of 60's and 70's music and I think that has come through in my guitar playing a little bit more rather than some of the acrobatic stuff I did in the past. It's all about trying to keep it interesting to ourselves too, you know what I mean? We've never been a band to make an album to please any certain people, we just made the albums that we wanted to hear and we really dig this one. It's a pretty uneasy album with dark topics that we deal with day to day. It's pretty fresh in that regard."After the sonic differences on previous album High Country, The Sword have added more structure and depth to their sound again on Used Future, with Shutt admitting the band needs to continue to grow musically for their own sanity as much as the fans."When we made Apocryphon, our fourth album, that was as far as we could have taken that style of heavy metal," he reflected, "and I think if we would have kept playing and writing songs in C all down-tuned I think that we would have probably lost interest in the band. We decided to tune our guitars up to E flat, mostly because... I was into it because I write a lot of the songs in E so us playing them in E flat made a lot more sense and also when we did JD was able to song lower instead of the other way around which you think it would be."To learn more about the album, including where the title came from, as well as reliving a bit of the past of The Sword and the turning point in the band's music that almost brought it all crashing down tune in to the below audio interview.Kris Peters

Are these documents alternate eyewitness accounts? Do they express the truth about Jesus, lost over the centuries? Are there any good reasons for us to accept what they say about Jesus? Is there anything TRUE we can learn from them?

What are the differences between a theophany and an avatar? Does sorcery require a powerful magic or intention to work, or are just the words enough? Is it possible that Luke's and Matthew's nativity stories were specifically written as polemic against an early version of the Toledoth Jeschu? Thus, neither based on Christian traditions in common? Is the ICHTHUS symbol specifically Christian (acronym), not pagan, in origin? Are all religious figures euhermized historical individuals? Are the mentions of synagogues in the NT really an anachronism? Can you comment on the origin of Wisdom literature, how they became incorporated into the Tanakh, and why the chapter divisions seem so arbitrary? What is your perferred moniker? Can God be "artistically pictured" in a such a way that does not force corporeality on the viewer? Did visual arts affect the perceived historicity of Jesus for early Christianity? I feel capable enough in front of dragons, roleplaying a character who’s intentions and morals I don’t agree with, even committing character death (hey, it happens to all of us), but dungeons are in another plane of existence for me. Reflecting back on the Tomb, I learned a lot, but it takes me an exceptionally long time to warm up to a dungeon, to know my way around catacombs of darkness, caverns of craven surprise. I partially blame playing a spellcaster. It’s in my nature to think of possibilities, I am, after all, an Intuitive. I see many possibilities of danger behind every corner, beyond every step as a player, and to a certain degree, a character. Not playing a rogue in this case can be nerve racking, but playing the mage, even more so. A Thief has all his abilities at a moment’s notice. At his whim he can check the floor for traps, or determine if there is a noise on the other side of a locked door; and just as easily walk away from it, never to be seen or heard. Granted, the first to die if something goes wrong is the trap detector, so I guess in the end it all evens out, but one thing is for sure, fighters are still prone to poison!
