Audience Coach | Build Your Audience as a Health and Wellness Coach
Why You Need an EDITORIAL Mission Statement for Your Podcast And How to Define It

Audience Coach | Build Your Audience as a Health and Wellness Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 6, 2020 7:53

A mission statement is a short text businesses have where they make clear who they're serving, what they're offering to their clients, and where they're heading as a company.  Why do businesses have mission statements? Well, because without them businesses would struggle at serving their clients, coming up with the right products and services, and planning for the future. So, for the same reason your own business has a mission statement, your podcast should have an editorial mission statement in order for you to be sure about your audience, your purpose, and your projection with the show. To establish your podcast's editorial mission statement, you'll need to take into account 3 main elements: Who are you serving? That's something you should have figured out when designing your audience persona. If you haven't done that yet, I totally recommend you to go check our episodes on creating audience personas. What are you offering your audience? Is it actionable tips? Experiences? Advice? Tools?  How will your audience benefit from all this in the short mid and long term? Defining this will give you a solid foundation to run your podcast for a long time and create a strong impact with it. Without a mission statement you might end up creating content that doesn't really help your audience, or that is totally off track from the original purpose of the show. It's important to mention that your editorial mission statement is closely linked to your audience persona. So close that your listeners will be able to know if their own values align with what you have to offer, thus your mission statement will also reveal what you stand for. Let's check a few examples. The first one is from the Wellness Mama podcast, hosted by Katie Wells. Their editorial mission statement goes like this: “A weekly podcast series covering the health topics of real food, stress, sleep, fitness, toxins, natural living, and much more to give you actionable steps to improve your family's health.” You can see in the editorial mission statement what Katie Wells, the host, stands for. Let's break it down a bit. It clearly contains the 3 elements I mentioned before: who the audience is, what the show offers to them and how they'll benefit. The audience is moms who are interested in living a healthier life What the podcast offers is actionable steps on health topics And the listeners benefit by improving their family's health. Another good example comes from The Business of Wellness, hosted by Lauren Armes.  "Host Lauren Armes will take you into the minds of the wellness industry's most successful brand owners, industry leaders and innovators. In this series, we're asking the big question: what does it really take to grow and succeed in the global wellness industry today? This podcast is for you if you are running a business in the wellness industry, thinking about starting a business, cultivating a career in this space, or intrigued by how your favourite wellness brand was set up." The audience is mainly people running businesses in the wellness industry. What the podcast offers is interviews with the wellness industry's most successful brand owners, leaders and innovators And the listeners benefit by learning what it takes to grow and succeed in the global wellness industry today. And we can even include this very podcast as well. Maybe you can try to identify the 3 composing elements in it. Our current editorial mission statement is "Audience Coach is the Podcast where coaches in the Health and Wellness field will find experiences, insights, tips and resources for building and growing their audiences." Did you manage to get the 3 elements?   So, if you want to be consistent in who you create content for, and how your audience will benefit from it in the short and long term, it's time to start designing your editorial mission statement. You'll need to write it down and rewrite it as many times as necessary to have a clear vision for your show. On a piece of paper or on your computer, answer these questions: Who is your intended audience? What they are getting from the show? How will they benefit from it? What do you stand for? Once you have it, please, please, share it with me! I'll be more than happy to see what you've created. Snap a picture and tag me on Instagram at @audience.coach or contact me at audiencecoach.com/contact. Looking forward to seeing how you're structuring your show. My name is David Perez and I will see you in the next episode.   Resources and references: Wellness Mama podcast, hosted by Katie Wells The Business of Wellness, hosted by Lauren Armes.  The One Brief Statement That Will Refine Your Content Marketing

For someone who has built a highly successful business into the definitive voice for the business of wellness, you might expect today’s guest to have always known what she wanted, or at least have had an elaborate plan to create it. Yet Lauren Armes, founder of Welltodo, is quick to share that getting to a place of doing her heart’s work didn’t come quickly. Lauren spent the early part of her career undecided what to study, if she’d even like it, and eventually finding herself in a role in a manufacturing firm. It was the exposure to the variety of business areas that kept her creative, entrepreneurial mind busy and growing for years. But when her comfort started to set in, she knew she needed a change. While Lauren is now seen as an expert in the wellness industry—helping experts and coaches to “make a mark, make an impact, and make money”—in this podcast episode you get to hear more of her personal journey. The decisions she made along the way, and the beliefs and attitude it took to continue to thrive in her business and life. We talk about: * not knowing what you want to be, but being willing to try * getting uncomfortable and finding beauty in the “not knowing” * the analytical brain vs heart balance when it comes to decision-making * Lauren’s mindset of trusting that things will work out * how she finally got to her “clarity moment” and found her heart’s work * finding joy in your challenges And plenty more. This episode will give you insight and inspiration to trusting and owning your own expertise. For more details, episodes and shownotes: http://www.thedaisypatch.co.uk/episode76.

A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of chatting to Lauren Armes over Zoom for this week's episode who happens to be the ever so amicable Founder of the industry-leading wellness platform that is Welltodo - a company with global reach that she launched five years ago (with a logo designed in Microsoft Paint by Lauren herself I should add!) that now comfortably turns over six figures each year, through its ever-growing readership, successful event series and career platform. We chat about what Lauren's days prior to launching Welltodo looked like, when she spent months toying with the idea of launching everything from a healthy coffee alternative to London's latest juice bar around a job that she despised and how she stayed motivated before landing on her 'lightbulb' moment. We also discuss why she's stopped treating personal development as a 'nice to have' and instead embraced it wholly as an essential tool for growth - both personally and professionally. Plus how she navigates the fine line between growing and nurturing a really close team whilst juggling the sometimes difficult conversations that are part and parcel of being the boss; and how a declined card forced her to shift her mindset towards money and her advice for female founders who might not feel comfortable dealing with numbers...There were so many parallels between Lauren's experience and my own journey launching She can. She did. - so much so that I found myself nodding to pretty much everything she said - so I really do hope you find what she had to say as inspiring as I did. This is Lauren's story to date...The She can.
