The Pope is DEAD and someone needs to replace him in Edward Berger's unique political thriller/mystery CONCLAVE from 2024, featuring Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence, who is leading the replacement process, as well as Stanley Tucci, Lucian Msamati, John Lithgow, and Sergio Castellitto as potential new popes (if they can get the votes). It's fascinating stuff, with a controversial element that we'll get into during our spoiler section (don't worry, we'll warn you!). We also chat about the recent passing of David Lynch in the opening segment, so get ready and LISTEN! The post Episode 259 – Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out – Conclave (2024) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
Kevin, Tom, and Joe explore the intense Vatican setting of electing a new pope in the Oscar-nominated film CONCLAVE. They discuss the political intrigue, unexpected reveals, and the impressive performances from actors like John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Ralph Fiennes. The discussion touches on various twists including cardinal scandals, radical cardinals, and a hidden secret cardinal, making it a must-watch. Also, there's conversation around real-world Catholic Church critiques and the film's unexpected twists that kept the hosts engaged. They also manage to weave in some humor and banter about grocery shopping, masculinity, and cultural references. They close off by touching briefly on their thoughts about other shows and films, like YELLOWSTONE and 1923.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/reelspoilers. Hosted on Acast. Episode 089: Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Matthew McFrederick Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Samuel Beckett's tragicomedy, Waiting for Godot, is a notoriously confounding work of theatre. The play is renowned for its lack of conventional plot or exposition, and for its existential predicament. Given its desolate philosophical landscape it is also surprisingly funny. Its theatrical imagery and intellectual provocation remain as potent as when it was first performed in Paris in 1953. As we record this episode an illustrious production is on stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London starring Ben Whishaw and Lucian Msamati. I am delighted to be joined by Dr Matt McFrederick from the University of Reading to help survey this famously challenging landmark of modern drama.
Episode 44 - Review: Conclave (2024)The adaptation of Robert Harris's 2016 novel comes vibrantly to life in the 2024 mystery thriller film, Conclave. This movie is one of a kind and easily among 2024's best releases so far. Joining me on this episode is my cousin, Bahareh Amidi Shargi, who kindly recommended this movie to me.The film boasts a stellar cast led by the commanding Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence. As if that weren't enough, the roster of talent also includes John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, Lucian Msamati as Cardinal Adayemi, and Carlos Diehz as Cardinal Benitez. Each character harbors secrets that gradually unravel in this gripping story.Directed by the brilliant Edward Berger—best known for the Oscar-winning All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)—Conclave reunites him with composer Volker Bertelmann. Together, Berger's thrilling direction and Bertelmann's dramatic score keep you on the edge of your seat until the film's riveting conclusion. While the movie begins as a slow burn, your patience will be rewarded as the narrative unfolds. It's a story that is sure to spark discussions and elicit strong reactions. Bahareh highlights the film's powerful theme of transparency, which adds depth to the shocking surprises awaiting viewers. The movie makes bold choices that you won't see coming.Conclave is now playing in theaters. It's also available to rent on-demand (No! Go to the Cinema! please). Thank you again for the wonderful recommendation, Bahareh. I hope you all check this one out. Thanks for listening! This marks our final episode of 2024. Sound Speed Action will return in January. Lucian Msamati has played leading roles on our most famous stages: Salieri in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus at the National Theatre, Iago in Othello at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Estragon opposite Ben Whishaw in Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London. He started out performing – in his words – ‘for farmers sitting on beer crates in rural Africa, with tables for a stage'. And when he decided to leave Zimbabwe, where he began his career, to see if he could make it in the UK, he had to work as a cleaner to pay the bills. His perseverance paid off: as well as success on stage, he's appeared in high-profile TV shows, including Game of Thrones and the Number One Ladies Detective Agency. After his role in Amadeus, it's no surprise to find Mozart among his musical passions, which also include Satie, Tchaikovsky and an unusual track by Stevie Wonder.Presenter Michael Berkeley Producer Clare Walker

Lucian Msamati is an actor who grew up in Tanzania and Zimbabwe and has lived in London since his early 20s. He has worked extensively in theatre, TV and film (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials, Gangs of London). I saw him most recently in an unforgettable portrayal of Salieri in Peter Schaffer's Amadeus at the National Theatre (which you can watch via NT at Home). TBB Talks ... to Msamati ahead of BBC's upcoming release of series three of Alan Bennet's Talking Heads. Playing the part of 'Wilfred Patterson' and performing the monologue ‘Playing Sandwiches', Msamati will feature in a double bill with Jodie Comer. Msamati's long-standing career across screen and stage has made him one of the most iconic Black actors working in Britain today. He is probably most famous for being the first black actor ever to play the part of 'Iago' in Iqbal Khan's 2015 production of Othello for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has also repeatedly performed at the National Theatre, most recently starring as 'Sam' in http://thebritishblacklist.co.uk/master-harold-and-the-boys-56-out-of-100/ (Master Harold and the Boys) (2019) and 'Antonio Salieri' in Amadeus (2019). Iconic television roles also include playing 'Tobi Akindele' in Channel Four's http://thebritishblacklist.co.uk/premiering-tonight-channel-4s-four-part-drama-kiri-will-spark-debate-interracial-adoption/ (Kiri) (2018), and currently starring as 'Ed Dumani' in Sky Atlantic's http://thebritishblacklist.co.uk/tbb-talks-to-star-of-gangs-of-london-pippa-bennett-warner/ (Gangs of London). Talking Heads is available to watch via BBC iPlayer now.
Alan Bennett's Talking Heads have been remade for television decades after the original series. Alongside two brand new monologues, ten episodes have been re-created with actors including Jodie Comer, Sarah Lancashire and Lucian Msamati. Theatre critic Sam Marlowe reviews these socially distanced dramas, and actor Lisa Dwan joins her to discuss the art of the monologue.
