Nathaniel Price discusses his drama First Touch, opening at the Nottingham Playhouse, about an aspiring young footballer growing up in Nottingham in the 1970s. Inspired by real life events, it explores the ways predatory abusers exploit positions of power within a community, in this case how the actions of a paedophile football coach almost go undiscovered because of the control he exercises in the football careers of his victims. In the wake of the campaign, Stop AI stealing the show, launched by Equity in response to the rise of the use of Artificial Intelligence in the entertainment industry, Front Row asked Paul Fleming, General Secretary of Equity, Dr David Leslie, Director of Ethics and Responsible Innovation at the Alan Turing Institute, and Dr Mathilde Pavis, senior law lecturer at Exeter University, to discuss the questions raised by the use of AI to enhance, extend, and replace human actors. BAFTA nominated film composer Alex Heffes has scored films including The Hope Gap, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Touching the Void. Now he's releasing a solo piano recording, Sudden Light, reinterpreting his cinematic orchestral scores after an accident that almost put an end to his piano-playing. The ecological challenges ahead of us are of epic proportions. We can learn a lot by studying successful revolutions that have come before us. In this episode, you’ll hear 10 lessons for Eco-Leaders from the struggle to overcome apartheid in South Africa, as told in the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. [1:00] Our education systems don’t teach us about representation or revolution. [1:15] Historically, there is a tendency for power to be concentrated in the hands of the few, at the expense of the many. [1:30] It is no less of a challenge than overcoming slavery, genocide, or apartheid. [2:00] You can’t compare 1-to-1 the suffering and injustice of apartheid to the collapse of ecological systems, but there are some similarities. [2:15] What could be more unjust than taking away the opportunity for future generations to inhabit a liveable world. [2:30] We can learn a lot from studying how huge entrenched problems were overcome. [2:50] Takeaways from the film: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [3:00] Not on Netflix. Check the library or wherever you watch movies. [3:15] 10 Lessons for Eco-Leaders from the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom [3:30] 1. Individually we are weak. Together we are strong. (with open hand vs closed fist image) [4:00] 2. Welcome the challenges. They will help you become who you need to be. [4:45] 3. Remind people that the end result you desire is inevitable. [5:25] 4. Don’t turn on each other. [6:40] 5. Allies matter. [7:00] 6. Follow the money. [7:50] 7. Leaders lead. [8:30] 8. Peace is the only way. [9:00] 9. Vote. [9:45]10. Don’t give up.   Quotes   It always seems impossible until it’s done. Nelson Mandela   What could be more unjust than taking away the opportunity for future generations to inhabit a livable world. Joan Gregerson   We humans are going to learn to live in harmony with nature or we’re going to fall away. It’s inevitable. Leading the Oscar nominations are Gravity and American Hustle with 10 nominations each followed by 12 Years a Slave and Wolf of Wall Street bagging nods in several categories. In the best picture category not surprisingly the 4 previously mentioned films plus Spike Jonze's Her starring Joquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with his digital personal assistant. Also making the list are Somali pirate film Captain Philips, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, and Judi Dench's Philomena. Director nods went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, David O Russell for American Hustle, and Martin Scorsese for Wolf of Wall Street. This is an important nomination for Scorsese as he has yet to win an Academy Award despite his extensive filmography of Oscar contending films. Will this finally be his year? Leonardo DiCaprio picks up a best actor nod for his role in Wolf of Wall Street as does Bruce Dern for Nebraska and Christian Bale for American Hustle. Matthew McConaughey has made the list too for Dallas Buyers Club. In the best actress category, Sandra Bullock holds a spot for Gravity along with Amy Adams for American Hustle, Cate Blanchet for Blue Jasmine, and Judi Dench for Philomena. Meryl Streep is in the running again as well for August: Osage County. For best supporting actress we have Jennifer Lawrence who won best actress last year. Also Lupita Nyong'o, Julia Roberts, June Squibb, and Sally Hawkins. Supporting actor nominations for funnyman Jonah Hill, Jared Leto, Michael Fassbender, Barkhad Abdi, and Bradley Cooper. Barkhad Abdi appeared as a Somali pirate in Captain Philips his first acting role. "People should understand why these people do what they do and what are their desperations and motivations, to become a pirate, you know. I'm really, really, you know, humbled and honored, to be nominated for the Oscar you know." Though missing out on the best foreign film category Wong Kar Wai's film The Grandmaster has received two nominations for cinematography and costume design, which is nothing to be ashamed of considering the caliber of the other nominations in those categories. Also up for cinematography is not surprisingly Gravity, Coen-brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, and Prisoners. For costume design the Grandmaster will compete against the Great Gatsby, American Hustle, and 12 Years a Slave. For original screenplay we have American Hustle, Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, and Spike Jonze's offbeat Her. Visual effects goes to Gravity, the Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, the Lone Ranger, and Star Trek: Into Darkness. Gravity's special effects supervisor, Neil Corbould, opened up about the difficulty of achieving Gravity's effects. "When I first started it was just one of those movies that was such a challenge right from day one, you really couldn't think about anything else, about how you are gonna get this movie made. No, it took a long, long time before you realized, when before I realized, that it was gonna be a special movie." It was surprised to see Hunger Games: Catching Fire did not receive nominations for neither sound mixing nor sound editing. So who was snubbed this year? Well, two men who are no strangers to the award, the Coen brothers, do not appear in any major categories with their film Inside Llewyn Davis. Oscar winning Tom Hanks has also been looked over for his lead role in Captain Philips as has Joaquin Phoenix for Her. The Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has only received one nomination for best original song performed by U2. For best original score Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet have received a nomination for their collaboration on Her. The winners of the 86th annual Academy Awards will be announced on March 2nd.

Barkhad Abdi appeared as a Somali pirate in Captain Philips his first acting role. "I'm really, really, you know, humbled and honored, to be nominated for the Oscar you know, it's, you know, I can not describe to you how I am feeling, you know I am really, really excited about this." Though missing out on the best foreign film category Wong Kar Wai's 王家卫 film The Grandmaster 一代宗师 has received two nominations for cinematography③ and costume design, which is nothing to be ashamed of considering the caliber④ of the other nominations in those categories. Also up for cinematography is not surprisingly Gravity, Coen-brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, and Prisoners. For costume design the Grandmaster will compete against the Great Gatsby 了不起的盖茨比, American Hustle, and 12 Years a Slave. No, it took a long, long time before you realized, when before I realized, that it was gonna be a special movie." I was surprised to see Hunger Games: Catching Fire did not receive nominations for neither sound mixing nor sound editing. So who was snubbed⑤ this year? Well two men who are no strangers to the award, the Coen brothers 科恩兄弟 代表作:老无所依, do not appear in any major categories with their film Inside Llewyn Davis. Oscar winning Tom Hanks has also been looked over for his lead role in Captain Philips as has Joaquin Phoenix for Her. The Nelson Mandela biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom has only received one nomination for best original song performed by U2. For best original score Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet have received a nomination for their collaboration⑥ on Her. The winners of the 86th annual Academy Awards will be announced on March 2nd. 1. prestigious 有声望的 2. filmography 电影年表 3. cinematography 电影艺术 4. caliber 水准 5. snubbed 被冷落 6. collaboration 合作
