Jerry Green is the Marketing Director at the Indiana Podiatry Group, which encompasses eleven podiatry businesses in Indiana, USA and treats more than 3000 patients per week. If your business is dependant on a steady flow of new referrals, you need to consider adding a marketing director to your team, and this doesn't just apply to podiatry or the healthcare industry, every business that interacts with people face-to-face can benefit by having someone fulfil this role. Before selling my own podiatry business in 2016, this was one of the most critical positions held, and it produced our most significant source of referrals. After selling my business, the new owners did not see the role as necessary and did away with it, which I believe was a costly mistake. For some people, SEO means Search Engine Optimism and not Seach Engine Optimisation because they are crossing their fingers and really hoping for the best, or hoping their SEO company knows what they're doing and is not taking them for a ride. My guest, Nicky Jurd, from Precedence is an online expert and my goal for this particular episode is to strip away some of the BS we are being dealt with in the SEO world. On this episode we discuss: 3:05 - What is SEO and what does an SEO company do? Create more traffic Create more sales Make your website more attractive and more relative when people search on Google This applies to product and service businesses 6:20 - A good SEO company will first identify if you’re selling locally or globally and work out what kind of traffic is going to be most relevant Initially, they need to make sure your website has no technical issues that are preventing Google from getting to every page. They will go through every page and optimise each page for a different set of keywords. They will also check the speed of your website. If it is slow this will affect everything else you do. speed is a priority to Google. 10:25 - Tools you can use to test things. Google search console Hubspot Site speed test through Google Most SEO companies will hand these problems over to your website developer because they need access to the website. So if your SEO company has not asked for your website developer details or access details to your website from you...there's a reason to have a concern. " You want to avoid getting a Google uppercut" 14:05 - Why most SEO companies will get heavily involved in the content of the website. Google likes content that is frequent and fresh, and content with a lot of details about the services you provide. If you like to write the other benefits of using an SEO company is helping you define your strategy and identifying gaps in your industry that other people are not writing about. They will help you identify areas where can you pick up new businesses. 16:30 - Why you need to remove industry jargon because no one is searching for it. 17:00 - What you can expect for $500 per month Reviewing text on the website Writing an article or blog post Checking to see if ther are any changes in your ranking 19:35 - You need to know what they are doing to bring in more Relevant Traffic. You can tell the traffic increase is quality traffic by an increase in sales. 20:35 - How to find a good referral for a good SEO company who has got good results 22:05 - Should your SEO company be doing your Facebook Ads, Google Ads, designing your website, writing content, etc? There are many benefits for looking for Social Media Specialists versus umbrella companies that try to do it all. More than likely they outsource it to third party companies. WARNING: They also pass details about your website to third party companies who you do not know. "UNICORNS: It's rare to find a company that does it all well and does it all in house". 26:25 - Outsourcing is okay until something goes wrong. 28:10 - Remember SEO is a long term strategy, not a short term fix. Allow 3-12 months before you see any results. 29:00 - If you’re a small company you may be better not to use an SEO company and instead engage someone to help train you on doing it yourself. If you want to go from invisible to influential in your industry, you must start sharing your story and personal journey. Keeping it to yourself serves nobody, and often we forget the journey we have walked is unique and will relate to certain people, and by not sharing our message some people are going to remain stuck. My guest, Annemarie Cross who is known as the 'podcasting queen', is a personal brand strategist and helps individuals get noticed in a noisy world by using podcasting as part of their marketing strategy. On this episode we discuss: 1:30 - What is Imposter Syndrome? 5:00 - What’s your unique story? 7:50 - Don't be afraid of Digital Dirt. We've all made mistakes, so talk about it, don’t keep it silent. Take ownership of that conversation and use it to contribute to your learning and teaching. 9:50 - Steps to go from invisible to influential. Step One: Insight: This information relates to who is your ideal client and the message that you share is going to speak to the issues that they have. Can you specialise in a specific area? What is your unique story? Remember to speak to an audience of one. People are beige because there's no clarity. 11:20 - A lot of business are scared to niche, but when you start to speak into one particular area you’ll find your reputation will proceed itself. A generalist often has their voice, and message spread too far, and therefore they’re not seen as that expert person in any particular area. 20:10 - Story Telling 23:10 - The benefits of consistently sharing a message. 25:00 - Make sure your terminology relates to the listener. Step Two: Intrigue: You need to speak the language of your ideal audience member, and you want to build something that has real value and maintains their attention. You want all your content to have a call to action, and you'll know if it's having an impact because people will engage with you. Step Three: Integrate: It is not practical to be active on every social media platform, which is why you need to know which ones are already working well for you. Can you integrate a podcast to nurture those relationships even further? Podcasting is a great platform to let existing customers know about all the other services you offer. A Podcast Series Starting a podcast series can help answer the questions your clients may be having and also how to overcome them. You can invite guests who are experts in particular areas and best of all the content is available 24/7. When you have a podcast, you can leverage off your other platforms, letting your audiences know you have a podcast. Make sure everything you're doing is connected and shares your podcast message. 34:40 - Talk from your area of strength. If you don’t like using video, then don’t use it. The Buyers Journey Awareness stage Consideration stage Decision stage 36:40 - Not every audio recording you do has got to be a podcast series; it can be used in a private group or on webpages. Monday Morning Tip Don’t eliminate yourself by thinking your story is not worth sharing. There are so many online marketing options available when it comes to connecting and staying in contact with your new and existing clients, customers and patients, and my guest Gavin Baker from Baker Labs, out of Knoxville Tennessee believes you've got to go with your strengths and keep your marketing strategy simple. Gavin Baker has worked with a lot of different businesses, but after evaluating his client base, he could see a strong trend towards healthcare, which is where he decided to stay. Doubling Down When you notice an area of your business that is growing faster than the rest and is making good money you need to focus your energy and consider doubling or even tripling down. This is how Baker Labs moved into working with Healthcare clients. Biggest Social Media Changes Over Past Seven Years Facebook has become even more powerful than expected, and it now owns many other platforms that used to be competitors. Google has tried and failed multiple times at building a social media platform, but as a search engine, it rules. Linkedin has become far more powerful as a business platform. The Big Four: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & LinkedIn In all honesty, you can only do two platforms well. You can try to do more, but it's not recommended. You should have a primary and secondary platform. Facebook is always going to be the number one primary platform. Therefore your secondary platform should be picked based on your personality. Instagram Versus Twitter If you like taking photos and your business is very visual then Instagram is going to be a perfect platform, however, if you are struggling what you should take a picture of, then it may not be the best platform. If you're witty and be willing to engage consistently throughout the day, Twitter is a great platform. LinkedIn is rarely used as a secondary social media platform because it involves developing a strategy first. Tips For Instagram Use hashtags. Hashtags help you be discovered and found. Find other photos in the hashtags categories you're using start to comment and engage with the owners of the page. This will help you get noticed. But remember, if your business only services within a 30-kilometre radius from your primary location, does having engagement with another company a thousand miles away be of benefit? Which Are You More Likely To Do? You need to operate where you do your best work. Assuming Instagram and Twitter are equal: Which platform are you more likely to do? Which platform comes more easily? Most people fail at marketing because they get stuck trying to do things they're no good at and they only do it because everyone else is doing it. If you have to take a picture, but don't know what to take a picture of this wastes time and results in poor image selection, which reflects on your business. The Power of Email Newsletters With email newsletters, you can connect with a lot of people quickly, and can be turned into sales and money, especially on e-commerce websites. People love to hate email and they will constantly complain about how much they receive, but it doesn't mean they will unsubscribe, so you have to keep sending it because you never know when your message will be heard. Before You Start An Email Newsletter Map out why people usually contact you. Answer those questions. Think about what may interest your clients. What have you read that you can tell your clients? Think about the overall content If you want your email newsletters to stand out, you've got to have a Good Subject Line. You want clients to see the email and think, I want to open this right now. Link Back To Your Website If you're going to go to the effort of writing an email newsletter and be on social media, you want to get clients going back to your website, not someone else's. So if you read an interesting article or report, don't post it on social media or put it in your email newsletter and link it to their website, instead, write your blog quoting what you have read and the source, and link it to your site. Brilliant Idea. Email Newsletter Automation Newsletters can be sent monthly unless you have a lot to say then weekly is a good idea. Another email newsletter option is to set up an automation process. It can be set up as a workflow or drip email after someone has requested a free report or download from your website. Or, you can use an automated email to push out a weekly review of updated content from your website. I do this with my podcasts and blog post using Campaign Monitor, but Mail Chimp and other platforms have similar features. There's Something More Important Than The Open Rates The key is to get your information out because you do not know who is going to read it and when. It doesn't matter if a client opens the email or not, just by them seeing your business name in the subject line every month means it is not a waste of time. If they take no action and don't unsubscribe, it means they're not sick of seeing it, so keep on sending it and do not delete them from your email list. It's a cheap way of staying in touch. Purple Cow If everyone is doing digital for all their communication, then maybe snail mail is a marketing option and will make you'd stand out. This is what Seth Godin was talking about in his book Purple Cow. Yes, postage is far more expensive but when was the last time you got a hardcopy newsletter or handwritten card. We don't get as much mail now, so people do look at it. It's essential to test the waters and keep trying new things. Never rule out an idea. Monday Morning Tip Look in your inbox and find three emails newsletter you like to read and work out why you want to read them. Then produce a newsletter that is like the ones you enjoy and you think your clients will also enjoy. "I want a newsletter like this because it makes me feel like that". If you want to amplify your business online, you need to align your social media content with your business needs. Your content needs to be authentic to you and make sense to your audience because a confused mind will always say no. Your content has also got to be appropriate to the social media platform your using. My guest Matt Hanham is the director of a Perth based digital marketing agency Visible. He is also the host of #Amplify Your Business podcast. On this episode we discuss: 2:20 - The Online Process - developing and finding a way to make content that makes sense to your business. It needs to add value or entertain. 4:20 - You must have the right context for the platform you're on. For example, Instagram: When they're in browse mode looking at pictures, they're not usually in the mood for buying, unless the picture captures their attention. It must be engaging. 6:40 - The importance of sharing your interest and passions on social media It must be authentic to you. It builds your brand. It must make sense to your target audience. You can't post photos of your hunting weekend if you own and operate a business that works closely with Vegans, it would not make sense. 12:30 - You can't just do what everyone else is doing in your industry. You've got to show your differences. It's not all about the craft you do. 20:20 - Create content that will make people talk, but be authentic. Great content will amplify who you are and will create publicity. Creating interesting content will make people pay attention, and then when you do open your mouth and talk about the craft you do, people will listen. 24:45 - If you're not sure what content to create, start writing a list and start brainstorming until you get excited about something. 28:10 - Simple Minds Podcast 29:00 - Amplify Your Business podcast 30:05 - What are Custom Audiences on Facebook and how to use them to grow your business. 37:35 - You've got to know you're strategy and then decide what tactic is best suited. Every small business wants more traffic to their websites, regardless of the industry, but traffic alone does not guarantee success, there must be a certain level of conversion and long-term engagement with the online users, and one of the best ways to do this is with A/B Testing. Chris Dayley is a Digitial Marketing Entrepreneur from Lindon Utah and his company Disruptive Advertising help business learn what their users want on their websites using psychological based testing and analytics. When I had my podiatry business in Cairns, I delved into A/B testing on a small scale, so it's great to have Chris Dayley explain this process in more detail. The Purpose of A/B Testing When you drive people to your website using specific SEO you want to see conversion results. The purpose of A/B Testing is to increase the results by splitting the traffic to different landing pages and learning what your audience ultimately wants to see on your website. There is a lot of psychology involved to work out what influences people to make certain decisions when they're online. Sometimes Success Is Not Always Success A lot of small business owners never look at their analytics and therefore never know why their online campaign failed. But a successful campaign is not always a good thing either, especially if the business owners do not know why it was a success without knowing why it's hard to duplicate. Do Not Copy Your Competitors Copying your competitors is not a smart business move. Your campaign could crash and burn because your audience and brand are unique to you, therefore taking the same approach as a competitor won't work, or work as well as it could. An Existence Test It's important to work out what should and should not be on specific website pages. For example, on your homepage, do you have too much information or too little? Have you tested what happens if you remove sections, numbers of products and amount of information available? Information overload can be a detriment. However, some website will produce better results with more information or products. Styling and colour, even though visually significant, is not as important as the user experience and how easy it is to find what they are looking for on your website. Words On A Page The amount of text on a page can attract and repel people depending on how they are consuming your content. There is a different user experience between consuming content on a desktop computer and a mobile telephone. Mobile users tend to prefer a shorter length blog, however, if it is too short it can run the risk of not having enough depth, so keep this in mind when writing. What does your audience want? Where Do You Start With Split Testing? Google Optimize is perfect for A/B Testing, and it lets you select which pages on your website you want to test, it allows you to edit those pages, or create a new page. To learn more follow the instructions, or you can go to the Disruptive Advertising website and download the free STARTER GUIDE. "Every Small Business Should Be Doing Some Form Of Testing". Testing Changes Your Mindset When you're in testing mode, it puts you in the mindset of wanting what's best for the end user, your audience. If you're not testing, you're not learning. If you're not sure where to start, pick something and test it. It could be the headline, a photo, the amount of text on the page, or different action buttons. Ask good business questions and develop a hypothesis. Declutter Large Websites If you have hundreds of articles and blogs, you can condense them, update them and re-release, or delete them altogether if outdated. Take a look at your Google Analytics and work out your most successful pages with consistent traffic. Make your decisions based on data, not assumptions. High Traffic & Low Conversions If your traffic is high, but your conversions are low don't assume you have to change the webpage, first take a close look your Google Analytics to see where your traffic is being directed from. If most of your traffic is coming from Facebook Ads, it could be crappy traffic. Contact your Web Developer if you don't know how to get into your website google analytics. Your Website Should Be Consistently Evolving Many people create a website and do nothing with it, or they do a token redesign every 12-months, and if this is all you're doing your missing some perfect opportunities to increased traffic. Audience behaviour is constantly changing and your website must do the same. It's all about the user experience and therefore you need to have clearly defined buttons on every page. Monday Morning Tip Try something new. If you stick with the same activities each day, you'll get the same results. "To accomplish a goal you've never reached, you have to do things you've never done". Matt Hanham is a Perth based entrepreneur, investor and consultant with a passion for small business, technology and wealth building. He is the director of Visible and host of #Amplify Your Business podcast. He also has one dirty little secret that he likes to keep hidden; he’s also an accountant, but lets not tell anyone. Seriously though, Matt’s brief accountancy career was really just one building block in his business success. He has a creative mind and he likes using financial reports to spark his creativity, but he does not like creating the actual financial reports himself. Illness At an early age he got very sick and hit rock bottom and this is what drove him to want to have his own business. He looked at buying an existing business but when he looked at the sale price, $300K, he didn’t have the money, but he knew he wasn’t afraid to do the work, so he started his own similar business from scratch. “When you start something from scratch you start from zero, but you’re also in control”. Mistakes Matt had an insolvency background and saw all the mistakes other people made in business, but even with this insight he still ended up making all the same mistakes himself. You have to keep your ego in check, because if it’s telling you, ‘I don’t make mistakes’, this can be really dangerous. In the corporate world it can be much easier where you have a team and everyone has different roles, but this is not the case when you work for yourself. When you work for yourself you need to be flexible, be aware you have blind spots and ask for help. Any mistake can be rectified as long as you don’t let it fester too long. The Giant Leap Matt forced himself to take action by refinancing his house, put all the money into an offset account, took a four week holiday and then came back and made the decision that he needed to start a business. You need to be an action taker, because taking action creates momentum, but always remember that money is import, but your health is far more important. The Business Pivot Matt’s current business, Visible, www.visible.com.au, initially started as an SEO, Google Adwords and web design business, basically a traditional agency. But he realised his business has to change to the changes in the digital landscape. It had to pivot to survive. There was a shift of attention. More people have their mobile phones with them, more so than doing a search on their desktop. So you need to be where people have their attention. The Losses This is why Visible had to switch focus towards social media and content creation. With the pivot his business did lose a few clients, he had to buy out his business partner; because there was no longer any congruency in their thinking and direction, and basically it was a painful period. So what does Visible do? They basically help small businesses owners amplify themselves online How does Visible work with a client? Step 1. First we work out who your target audience is. Who is it that you want to talk with and attract to your business? This is the Discovery Process. Step 2. Then we help work out your strengths? If you’re good at producing videos we’ll assist you to head down that path. If you’re better at writing – we’ll help with your blog post. Step 3. We help leverage their time. Most business owners are time poor. The Goal: to work out the best and fastest way to extract information, or content about their business and distribute it everywhere we can on the internet, as long as it matches their target audience. Different Frame of Mind A potential client may be on INSTAGRAM because they want to browse through pretty pictures, whereas on FACEBOOK they may be more inclined to watch a short three-minute video, because they’re in a different frame of mind. People are looking for different things from the different social media platforms. Creating Content A burger shop may shoot a 2-minute video preparing a burger, but from this you can create multiple 15-second videos and still shots, which can be posted onto YOUTUBE, FACEBBOK and other social media platforms, using different text and layouts. For example a client may have a raw podcast file and from this Visible can complete the full episode, audio snippets, photos and quotes. What Does Your Customer Want? What will work best varies between businesses. It’s all about what the consumer wants to see. For example a thirty-five year old female hairdresser will have different needs and wants to a fifty-five year old male mechanic. Consistency Is The Key Many business owners like to do their own social media marketing, the only problem is most do it in a flurry for one week and then they stop. This is why using an agency can be a good idea. Visible can take over the workload, or help them set up systems. What is Micro-Story Telling? It’s about letting people know what you’re up to and what you’re like, as a business owner. It helps people relate to you on a personal level. Posting a photo eating a burger with your family shows you like burgers and you also like to hang with your family. At our core we are community driven. Micro-Story telling comes from providing micro-content. These small bits of content when put together tell a story. Authenticity Counts If you share who you are you become more authentic. If you’re not sure what to post, try something and see what sort of response you get. You may start with a photo of a burger and next you could share a video of something you’re having problems with. Eating Your Own Dog Food For years Matt was helping people with their online social profiles, but not doing it himself or for his business. He eventually realised he couldn’t be telling people to do something that he wasn’t doing himself. He started by shooting videos around the office and creating a weekly VLOG, which was posted on YOUTUBE and Facebook. Important lesson from this: When he started doing it for himself, and spending his own money he learnt a lot and was able to offer a better service to his clients. It’s How We Communicate Today Micro pieces of content help tell our stories – Micro-Story Telling Businesses can no longer switch their minds off to what they do digitally and just concentrate on their business. It’s like saying we won’t answer the phone anymore, or in 1987 saying you didn’t need a fax…YES YOU DID. Social media is just how we communicate with other today. It’s Not Always Easy Posting on social media is a simple process, but it’s not always easy, so to make it easier, simply identify what you’re passionate about and use it in your social interactions. For example, if a Lawyer is passionate about golf he or she can post photos playing golf, visiting gold courses, articles about golf and latest golfing news on their social media pages. This all helps connect with their clients, especially those that love golf. It’s no different to 30 years ago where the Lawyer would go down to the local golf club and network on the 19th hole. Instead of being one-to-one, it’s now one-to-many. Monday Morning Tip Open up your primary online platform and if you don’t have one yet start with Facebook, and just post something. If you don’t have a business page yet, post something about your business on your private page. Just write a simple update. Today I’m going to do this in my business, and then repeat this for the next 7 days. If you can do this you’re onto something and then just keep going and don’t stop. You have to build a micro habit to get started and then grow from there Matt’s Contact Details Personal social pages: @MattJHanham Visible can be found @TeamVisible The podcast is #Amplify Your Business & Simple Minds podcast.
