Would you like to feel happier and more empowered, especially as a woman? Have you ever felt like you just didn't fit in or found yourself in challenging relationships where you couldn't be yourself? Lisa continues the conversation today with award-winning author and intuitive and self-worth coach Abiola Abrams. As a first-generation American born to parents from Guyana, South America, Abiola talks about the struggles she felt and the difficulty she had fitting in. She experienced a very different upbringing compared to her neighborhood friends in New York City. She always felt like an outsider. She realized she was a people-pleaser because she so badly wanted to fit in. She explains how so many people do this as a coping mechanism. Women around the world have been told for so long that we are “less than,” and that things are wrong with us. We are made to feel insecure. For most women, this can be stressful and hurtful. It's challenging until we empower ourselves and realize there is actually nothing wrong.  Abiola explains how we can begin to cultivate self-acceptance and eventually self-love. Compassion and love are the keys. She also discusses Divine feminine power and energy, as well as the use of Oracle Cards as a form of divination and a way to further hear messages from our higher selves. She talks about the deck she developed, the African Goddess Rising Oracle Deck, and how African culture has so many different types of divination from reading chicken bones to sand fox footprints, tea leaves, sand crabs, and even bibliomancy by using the Bible.   Her oracle deck is compiled of African Goddesses and Ancestors from various African countries and places where Africans are living throughout the world including the USA, the Caribbean, and South America. Because Africans experienced human trafficking and slavery, they've had to hide their traditions. This deck honors the traditions in surprising ways with messages hidden in folklore and meanings meant to be preserved.  Abiola also discusses her work as a business coach to entrepreneurs and how business and spirituality are not separate. It's all about love and service, yet you must have conversations about money. It's about sacred work and moving toward your purpose.   As a sound healer, she utilizes crystal bowls and guided meditations, as well as drumming. She talks about how drumming was forbidden as it was once a form of communication between tribes. It's a very empowering way of healing.  As a teacher and international retreat leader, Abiola empowers women to find freedom from their personal fears, manifest authentic power, and align with purpose. She is the founder of Mawu's Goddess Mystery School and the international Goddess Retreats. She is the author of womanist theology guidebook "African Goddess Initiation: Sacred Rituals for Self-Love, Prosperity, and Joy” and the best-selling  "African Goddess Rising Oracle Deck." Her most recent meditation album is called, "Enter the Goddess Temple." Info: Womanifesting.com

Have you ever felt different or like you didn't fit in? Have you ever found yourself in a challenging or co-dependent relationship? Today's guest is award-winning author and intuitive and self-worth coach Abiola Abrams. As a first-generation American born to parents from Guyana, South America, Abiloa talks about the struggles she felt and the difficulty she had fitting in. She experienced a very different upbringing compared to her neighborhood friends in New York City. She always felt like an outsider.  Eventually Abiola fell in love with her high-school sweetheart and when the relationship fell apart, she realized she needed to dig deep and surrender. She realized she was a people-pleaser because she so badly wanted to fit in. She explains how so many people do this as a coping mechanism. Women around the world have been told for so long that we are “less than,” and that things are wrong with us. We are made to feel insecure – ads show flawless, perfectly photoshopped women and marketing companies tell us there's always something wrong or something we can do, be, or have that's so much better. For most women, this can be stressful and hurtful. It's challenging until we empower ourselves and realize there is actually nothing wrong.  Abiola explains that although she felt very lucky to have kind, loving parents, they couldn't understand her and what she was experiencing. They were not able to teach her, as they, too,  were also people-pleasers. That's how they coped and interacted with the world, especially as an immigrant family. She felt love from her family, but Abiola didn't find self-love until she surrendered. She explains that if you don't have self-love, start with self-acceptance. Start by asking “What do you desire?” This is a very vulnerable question that allows us to express our desires. We know what we don't want, but do we know what we do want? This can be a very challenging question. Once we begin to find the answers, we can begin to cultivate self-acceptance and eventually self-love. She also discusses Divine feminine power and energy, and how to empower our Yin energy to develop our feminine side. Compassion and love are the keys.  As a teacher and international retreat leader, Abiola empowers women to find freedom from their personal fears, manifest authentic power, and align with purpose. She is the founder of Mawu's Goddess Mystery School and the international Goddess Retreats. She is the author of womanist theology guidebook, "African Goddess Initiation: Sacred Rituals for Self-Love, Prosperity, and Joy,” and the best-selling "African Goddess Rising Oracle Deck."

Femmes puissantes, femmes inspirantes

Happy New Moon, Gorgeous! Are you ready for an inspiring, uplifting and heartfelt conversation that'll leave you wishing it was twice as long? I sat down with my friend Colette Baron-Reid on her podcast INSIDE THE WOONIVERSE and am SO excited to share this beautiful conversation with you.   Here's Colette Barron Reid's description of the episode: At every moment we are given an opportunity to tune into the magic of life, but how can we transmute our limiting beliefs? What practices and sacred ritualscan help deepen our connection and understanding of the Divine? This week on INSIDE THE WOONIVERSE, I'm speaking with Abiola Abrams, award-winning author, intuitive self-love coach, and founder of Mawu's Goddess Mystery School. Abiola's calling is to help empower you to become who you were born to be and is the author of both the book “African Goddess Initiation” and deck, “African Goddess Rising Oracle Cards.” In this conversation, we speak about tuning into and pursuing your calling, activating the goddess within and accessing ancestral wisdom.

Today we discuss goddesses who played a role in creating the world and/or humanity, including Estsanatlehi from Navajo mythology, Papatuanuku from Māori mythology, the Djanggawul Sisters from Yulengor mythology, Mawu from Dahomey mythology, Woyengi from Ijo mythology, Amamikyu from Ryukyuan mythology, and Neith from Egyptian mythology. We also talk about why it's necessary for humans to have myths about the creation of the world. While recording, we experienced some technical difficulties. For this reason, the audio quality from our mics is not up to our usual standards. We apologize for the inconvenience. For more information about today's episode, go to mytholadies.com. It is in no way meant to be the authoritative account of this Goddess or the religious beliefs that are tied to her. As a child, I loved to be read to! As an adult, I still love to listen to a good story! That's what this is, a good story with lessons that can be applied today. Lessons on; humility, kindness, interconnectedness to others and the earth, using time and resources wisely and more. The Divine Feminine has many faces and has been depicted in a variety of ways depending on the culture. This new series is simply offering accounts of views of the Divine Feminine from various cultural angles.

For our twelfth episode we're joined by editor and bookseller Jackie Tang of Neighbourhood Books in Northcote as we discuss Witches Abroad! The twelfth Discworld novel, published in 1991, Witches Abroad is the second to star the Lancre witches, who return only two books later for Lords and Ladies. Witch Desiderata Hollow has died and passed on her fairy godmother wand to Magrat Garlick, the youngest of the Lancre witches, along with a note telling her to go to the distant kingdom of Genua to stop a servant girl from marrying a prince - without Granny Weatherwax. Which of course means Granny - and Nanny Ogg - are definitely coming. As they make their way across the Disc by broomstick and riverboat, experiencing all that travel has to offer, they find themselves increasingly drawn into warped stories - and Granny may not be letting on all that she knows about what they'll face when they arrive...  As well as providing an extended parody of the English travelling abroad, Witches Abroad is mostly about stories - where they come from, how they influence us, and what they really mean when you stop to think about them. As well as traditional fairytales, Pratchett lampoons everything from The Wizard of Oz to Disney princesses and even Middle Earth. So what did you think of Witches Abroad? Use the hashtag #Pratchat12 on social media to join the conversation. In our next episode we'll be going back amongst the Nomes for book two of the Bromeliad - Diggers! As usual we'd love to get your questions for the podcast; send them in via social media using the hashtag #Pratchat13. Show Notes and Errata: "Voodoo" is a popular culture distillation of several religions, but especially Haitian and Louisiana Vodun, themselves derived from West African Vodun and influenced by many other traditions, including Christianity. Some rituals involve summoning spirits known as lwa or loa, intermediaries between the physical world and the creator deity (Bondye, Mawu or others depending on the tradition). Famous loa include Baron Samedi, a loa of the dead, and Papa Legba, who exists at the crossroads between the material and spiritual worlds. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was a 19th century Russian writer. His works are social commentary, mostly in the form of farce and satire. The Government Inspector is his best known novel, but he is mostly remembered for his many short stories including Diary of a Madman, The Nose, The Overcoat and The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich. (His name is pronounced GO-gl, which is more or less the only way we don't try to say Mrs Gogol's name during the podcast.)Of the Discworld books we've covered so far, Wyrd Sisters, Sourcery and Moving Pictures all begin with a death. Pyramids, Men at Arms and Reaper Man all have deaths close to the beginning that are vital (if you'll excuse the term) to their plots. The prose poem Desiderata was written by American writer Max Ehrman in 1927, though it didn't become widely known until the early 1970s. You've almost certainly read or heard at least one of the verses. The poem's copyright status has been a matter of contention over the years, in part because it was printed unattributed in a church leaflet accompanied by the church's founding date, leading some to believe it was much older and therefore in the public domain. As a result the Annotated Pratchett File has a copyright notice asserting Erhman's authorship rather than any quotes, but by contrast you can read the whole thing on Wikipedia. The word "Desiderata" is Latin, the plural form of "desideratum": a thing wished for, or - you guessed it - desirable. It is indeed the source of the English word "desire".We ruined our browser history so you wouldn't have to: Echidna penises are indeed unusual. They are very long for their body size, and with not three but four prongs, more like those seen in reptiles than other mammals. They only use two of the prongs at a time, though.
