Michael Frazier is the executive vice president and deputy director for external affairs for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. He oversees strategic marketing, social media, mobile, and web and digital communications. As part of managing media and marketing, Frazier also cultivates and maintains content partnerships with technology companies, including Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft. He is also the chief spokesman and media advisor for the Memorial and the Museum. Follow 911 Memorial on Instagram. Before joining the organization, he was a journalist and worked for the Pulitzer-winning newspaper Newsday. While at the Long Island–based paper, he was an enterprising crime reporter covering local, regional, and national stories. He also worked as the paper's bureau chief at New York City Hall, covering breaking news, World Trade Center reconstruction, politics, and the Mayor Michael Bloomberg administration. Frazier formerly reported on sports, business, and cultural and civic news for the Associated Press, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and other daily newspapers. He was also a 2007 Deadline Club Award finalist, and in that same year, was nominated for the National Association of Black Journalists' Salute to Excellence Award. Frazier has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he was the recipient of the William Fulbright Scholarship and earned a 2001 merit award for nonfiction essay writing. Frazier is a lifelong cyclist. He owns several bikes for road, singletrack, and downhill. He and his wife, Sara, who is a veteran journalist, have a daughter and son and live in Brooklyn. Brown currently serves as Professor of Practice and Director for the Center for Drug Discovery for Rare and Underserved Diseases at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and Fellow at the National Academy of Inventors (FNAI). Bunning, chairman of the Board of Directors for FARE. “Dr. Brown's passion for medicine is clear, and we know this passion will aid us in our mission to find a cure for food allergies and improve the lives of all those affected.” Dr. Brown is a recipient of the 2015 Percy Julian Award by the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers for significant contributions in pure and/or applied research in science and has served as a scientific reviewer of grants and programs for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grants, Department of Defense (DOD) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Brown previously served as Deputy Director for Drug Discovery & Development at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute and Director of the Inova Schar Cancer Center for Drug Discovery at Inova Center for Personalized Health in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition to his role on FARE's Board of Directors, Brown will also serve as a co-chair of FARE's Voice of the Patient Roundtable: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. The Roundtable, which is set to be scheduled this fall, is co-chaired by Michael Frazier, FARE Board of National Ambassadors and Advocacy Advisory Committee member, and seeks to bring thought leaders together to find consensus on how patient advocacy organizations can advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the work that they do. Following the event, FARE will publish a blueprint outlining actionable steps to address DEI in food allergy education and research. “In identifying leaders who can play a key role in moving food allergy science and advocacy forward, Dr. Brown stood out as a seasoned professional who has a track record for developing trust in the community and with grateful patients and in maintaining multi-investigator collaborations in academia and industry, locally, nationally and internationally,” said Lisa Gable, chief executive officer for FARE. “We are thrilled to have him join our board and look forward to all we will be able to do together.”
Composer Michael Frazier joins us to discuss his compositional philosophy and methods, whether the ensemble or the idea comes first, the conflict between using specific techniques versus writing what you hear, Takemitsu's concept of ma, repurposing different types of music, and the need to explore the many musical styles beyond traditionally European classical music. Michael also talks with us about making electronic music accessible to new audiences and incorporating novel sounds, styles, and approaches in performance. Michael Frazier is a composer of acoustic, electronic, and electroacoustic music currently residing in Rochester, New York. Frazier's works are an amalgamation of a variety of sound worlds and aesthetic backgrounds where slowness, patience, and a focus on harmony guides his compositional approach. He received a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the University of South Florida and Master of Arts in Composition at the Eastman School of Music, where he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Composition. His family moved to Texas at a young age where Michael began pursuing his dreams. Whether it was singing the National Anthem for the Dallas Stars, performing at Mary Kay conventions, or simply dancing around in his bedroom, Michael has always had a deep passion for entertaining. While studying at the University of North Texas, he was a member of two dance teams including one that he founded, directed and choreographed for. The team even performed as opening act for Patti LaBelle during a special appearance. After graduating, Michael moved to Los Angeles, California where he continued to dance, sing and entertain. Some of his most outstanding accomplishments include choreographing flash mobs at Universal Studios, performing at House of Blues and other well known LA venues, releasing his first single on iTunes and teaching several hip hop and jazz funk classes. Now back in the Dallas area, Michael teaches a Popstars dance class at Caulfields Dance Fitness where he hopes to inspire and teach other dancers and entertainers to follow their dreams.
