Puzzles are like crack cocaine for their very special audience.  Whether it be a crossword, a logic problem, or even a riddle, unravelling them shoots a heavy dose of endorphins directly to the brain.  It is therefore no surprise that Professor Layton and the Curious Village was such a resounding success upon release, taking advantage of the portability of the 3DS before smartphones were a given for the general populace.Combining a charming and relaxed atmosphere with an onslaught of different puzzle types, it was so successful that not only did it have many, many sequels, it even had a spinoff with Ace Attorney.  People fell in love with everything the game had to offer, right down to its devious trickery. But has this formula of puzzles with a light story attached truly stood the test of time?  Is this better or worse than the point and click adventure games that defined the puzzle genre in the 90s?  Or is Professor Layton just a dull and repetitive ripoff of Sherlock Holmes? On this episode, we discuss:Story. How compelling is the story that exists in the webbing in between all of the puzzles?  Does its light and charming tone suit the seemingly dark mysteries that surround the curious village?Puzzles. What did we think of the puzzles in the game?  Is there enough variety in puzzle types?  Can you logically push through most puzzles?  Are the ‘gotcha' puzzles that require lateral thinking unfair, or an essential part of the Layton experience?Hints. Is it possible to get stuck and unable to progress when things get too hard?  Are the hints that are available to the player reasonable without giving too much away?We answer these questions and many more on the 103rd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherProfessor Layton OST: Tomohito Nishiura  Is there more to the story of Professor Layton and the Curious Village than we thought?  Is there another game in the series that is an absolute must play?  Which was your favourite puzzle?  Come let us know what you think on our community discord server! If you enjoy the show, please consider supporting us on our Buy Me a Coffee Page!

This game reminds me of a puzzle. About 120 of them, to be exact. You could be forgiven for thinking that Professor Layton existed before his debut game on the Nintendo DS. The whole series has such a strong aesthetic and vibe that it feels like a European cartoon that you just never heard about. But no, this was created whole cloth as a way to adapt a series of Japanese brain teaser books into video game form. While the story beats are ludicrous, and not all of the puzzles work, it's hard to be entirely mad at this quaint and amusing DS game. Thanks to William for executive producing this episode!

My biggest “confession” or guilty pleasure is my unironic appreciation for Superman 64.  It's indefensible. I cannot justify it. The game is awful. But when it came out, I loved it. It let me be Superman, and that was good enough for me. That's the beginning and end of my argument for the game. It makes no earthly sense, but I cannot bring myself to hate it.   Flightsy — 05/28/2021 Everyone says Skyward sword was too handholdy, but I remember when I got it from the library I got stuck   JasonLee — Yesterday at 8:44 AM I remember getting stuck very early in the Deku Tree in OoT. Re-Play Radio gets brainy -- at least, as much as Bryan and Steve are able to get brainy. Our proper gentlemen talk about Madden 10 and SimCity for the iPhone, NCAA Football 10, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Torchlight, Toy Story 3, Transformers: War for Cybertron, and Earthworm Jim HD among others. We then delve into mystery in St. Mystere with Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Finally, we close out with thoughts on Kinect, Move, 3DS, and other E3 happenings. Nintendo won for the second straight year, and this time people seem to agree with us! Download it now.

You hear a lot of talk these days about games with open worlds, co-op gameplay, where exploration is key. Those three very buzz-worthy concepts of today also came into play in our fourth Game Club game, ToeJam & Earl for the Sega Genesis. One of the era's few co-op games, its emphasis was not on combat unlike so many of the other games it shared the shelf with. It was about avoiding enemies, managing your items, and (if you had a buddy to play with) teamwork. In the second segment we talk all about TJ&E and our experiences with it.But of course we also discuss the games we played this week, which include N+, Dragon Quest Swords, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, The Club, Rock Band, Dynasty Warriors 6 and Lost Odyssey. Thanks for listening! It's a different kind of podcast this week. Greg is absent, CJ and Phil are LIVE from San Francisco. It's the first time we've recorded an episode where any of us were in the same room. We talk about the Game Developers Conference and seeing it from two angles (press and industry), as well as some of the bigger news of the week (NPD numbers, oh boy!).But we spend most of the show talking about the games we've been playing over the past week. And that includes Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, PixelJunk Monsters, Team Fortress 2, Poker Smash, Discs of TRON, LEGO Star Wars TCS, Endless Ocean and Warriors Orochi. Thanks for listening!
