Vitamin C is a cure for the common cold. Bats are blind. Sugar makes children hyperactive. All of these statements are false. So why are they so pervasive? And why do they feel so true?In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a phenomenon that can cause us to believe inaccurate information more than we should, and also lead us to trust reliable information less than we should. If you're over a certain age, you might remember friends or family panicking about MSG, or monosodium glutamate, particularly in American Chinese food. But those health concerns stemmed from a single letter to the editor in The New England Journal of Medicine—and a media storm that repeated false information. Jennifer LeMesurier learned about this letter and set off on a journey to trace the origins of the MSG scare and find out why the myths about this ingredient are so persistent. Jennifer LeMesurier is an associate professor of writing and rhetoric at Colgate University and the author of Inscrutable Eating: Asian Appetites and the Rhetorics of Racial Consumption.Next, Katy speaks with Tali Sharot about her research on the illusory truth effect—the idea that people are more likely to believe and share repeated information, whether or not the information is accurate. You can learn more in the paper Tali co-authored, titled "The Illusory Truth Effect Leads to the Spread of Misinformation."Tali Sharot is a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London and an affiliated professor in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Listen to what the studies say because they didn't all agree. There is a tend, however.
MSG is a popular food enhancer that is responsible for giving food an umami flavor- one of the five tastes humans have. MSG was is found in many foods found in nature like meat, cheese, and vegetables. MSG is has been used in some processed foods and in popular chain restaurants like KFC. But for some people MSG can cause allergy like symptoms. For many years Asian food, specifically Chinese food in America has been blamed for the MSG intolerance some individuals experience. However, when looking deeper at the history of MSG and the research we learn that there's always more to the story. In this weeks episode we explore the story of taste, what the research actually says about MSG, and the unfortunate reality blaming a single ethnicity has led to. Monosodium Glutamate is probably one of the most contentious ingredients in modern food. Increasingly there have been calls to tackle the stigma attached to it especially as this has been linked to Chinese restaurants and people with East Asian heritage. In this programme Leyla Kazim aims to demystify MSG. She looks into where it came from, what it is and how it became so demonised. Professor Lisa Methven from the University of Reading explains the taste science behind how and why we like MSG. David Gott from the Food Standards Agency clarifies what the science says around the health issues associated with it. Historian of Science Dr Sarah Tracy tells Leyla about the complicated history of MSG. MiMi Aye and Huong Black from the MSG Pod talk about their experiences with MSG and coach Leyla on how to use it in food. Alison Cheung and Marina Lai’s families both own restaurants in London’s Chinatown, Plum Valley and Lotus Garden. They talk about how they want to confront the decades long stigma Presented by Leyla Kazim Produced by Sam Grist in Bristol

English | 简体中文 Episode 4: MSG The Nugent Report The Nugent Report the science behind health and nutrition. Welcome to this episode of The Nugent Report, a definitive source for objective information on health and nutrition. Featuring Dr. Steve Nugent, the renowned psychologist, author, public speaker and expert on science, health, wellness and nutrition. Be sure to visit our website at ‘drnugen.com' and follow us on Facebook, twitter and Instagram @TheNugentReport. Steve Nugent: Hello and welcome to another episode of The Nugent Report. On this Nugent Report, we're going to be talking about MSG (Monosodium Glutamate). A poll was taken on The Nugent Report Facebook page and the majority of the respondents said, they wanted to hear a podcast or see a blog on MSG. Well, I wasn't really planning on this, but this is what my subscribers wanted so, so be it. If you're sensitive to MSG or at least you believe you are, then you already have a good idea of what it is but not everyone does. So, let's start by explaining what MSG is. MSG is an abbreviation for Monosodium Glutamate and it's commonly used as a flavor enhancer in many foods. From Bouillon cubes to canned vegetables. Believe it or not, MSG was first isolated by a Japanese scientist back in 1908. He was researching a particular flavor which is found in a seaweed an edible seaweed, which is called Kombu. And he was successful in his effort. So, it's been around for a long time. Chemically, it's a sodium salt of glutamic acid. Glutamic acid is a non-essential amino acid and that means it occurs naturally in the body. It's required for building proteins in your body. It's found in many different types of animal and plant proteins. It also is a neurotransmitter, so that makes it pretty important and it's required for ammonia metabolism. So, please understand that glutamic acid is not MSG. I get that question a lot. So, they're not the same thing. So, MSG is a sodium salt of glutamic acid. The US FDA says that, MSG is safe but some disagree. Some have even implied that MSG could lead to brain damage. I must point out that there is no peer-reviewed science literature to support that. Remember that The Nugent Report is dedicated to bringing you objective science. That means you're going to get both sides of this story. The people who report various symptoms associated with MSG are often said to have Chinese Restaurant Syndrome or CRS. Because it's most commonly used in Chinese food. The first paper on Chinese Restaurant Syndrome was actually published in the new England Journal of Medicine back in 1968 and the author was RH Quok. In his paper, he reported that after consumption of Chinese food, there was some reports of what he called Transient Subjective Symptoms. Which included some of the classic symptoms discussed in this episode. To report this episode to you, I looked at quite a number of individual studies and they all unfortunately were reporting inconsistent results. So, that took me to the next step and that was to look at systematic review papers of the individual papers. So, the question that comes up is. Is MSG actually bad for you? According to the FDA and numerous scientific studies, it isn't. however, there are people who consume food or liquids with MSG and report a number of different unpleasant symptoms. Including headache, flushing, nausea, chest pain, sweating, general weakness, pressure or tightness in facial muscles. As well as numbness, tingling and even burning sensations in the neck or the face. Some people also report heart palpitations. Could all these people be wrong and the government be right? Is this a simple yes or no answer? Well, the Food & Drug Administration classifies MSG as gras. So, that's an abbreviation. So, GRAS in capital letters and it means generally regarded as safe. MSG is not only used in Chinese food; it's also used to enhance the flavor of soups and canned vegetables and canned meats and other things.

Why Should You EAT ORGANIC? Because the alternative is conventional and nonorganic: Conventional fruits and vegetables are grown in chemical fertilizer. Conventional fruits and veggies are riddled with Roundup, which contains a chemical called glyphosate that authorities have linked to cancer. Conventional fruits and veggies are most often Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) - meaning someone takes a piece of fruit or a vegetable (papaya or a zucchini), and they ALTER its genetic material using genetic engineering so it LOOKS better and survives an otherwise deadly amount of pesticides (which damage your gut lining and brain). GMOs are engineered combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Nonorganic Foods contain ingredients made by humans that should not go in your body, such as: refined vegetable oil, recombinant bovine growth hormone, potassium bromate, sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite, BHA and BHT, Artificial Food Coloring, High Fructose Corn Syrup and Monosodium Glutamate.
In this we look at the science of monosodium glutamate (MSG) a common food additive that many people claim to be sensitive to. It appears that it could be a useful tool for improving the nutrition of at risk populations.
Have you ever heard of Chinese restaurant syndrome? Sounds terrible doesn't it? Chinese restaurant is a collection of symptoms that resemble the effects of a mild allergic reaction. Some people blame it on the MSG and say that we should avoid it at all costs. I LOVE me some Chinese restaurant food, so I wanted to know the truth. In this episode, I am going to review some studies on MSG and help you decide if it is something that you should avoid at all costs, or something that you shouldn't worry too much about. This episode of The Whole Circle is totally dedicated to going through our tip five additives to avoid. As promised here is a basic breakdown of the additives we discussed within the podcast: Preservative 282 - This is a common ingredient found in many dough type items. Think things like bread, fruit buns, finger buns, and of course wraps. This preservative is linked to both behavioural and learning issues. It may cause skin irritations, headaches, migraines, and it's recommended that asthmatics should avoid it. Annatto 160B - Annatto is fast becoming known as one of the harshest additives in todays food. Research has linked it to a number of serious health issues. Illnesses such as skin irritations, sleeplessness, hives, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and itchy or red eyes It is also linked to behavioural issues such as tantrums, hyperactivity, and even head banging in younger children. There are numerous reports that Annatto has increased the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is also known to exacerbate asthmatic symptoms and can be linked to concentration issues in both adults and children. In the last few years there is an alarming increase of reports, from parents, who are starting to link Annatto to aggravated and increased symptoms of ADHD, ADD, and even Autism. Sulphites (220) - Sulphur Dioxide can be fatal to asthmatics. It can irritate the respiratory system and cause asthma attacks. It can constrict the bronchi and increase mucous flow, making breathing difficult. Children, the elderly, those with chronic lung disease, and asthmatics are especially susceptible to these effects. It can sometimes cause hay fever type symptoms and occasionally urticaria (hives). Caramel Colour 150C - Studies have linked caramels that are produced with ammonium (150c) with gastro intestinal problems and hypersensitivity. It has also been shown to inhibit the metabolism of B6, reduce white blood cell count, or soften feces. Reported reactions include rashes, irritable bowel symptoms, headaches, and behavioural changes in children. In addition, animal studies showed possible carcinogenic effects. Our food and safety board (FSANZ) recognise that some people notice a reaction to either natural or synthetic additives. MSG (621) - Monosodium Glutamate or MSG is used in food to enhance flavour, originally used for meat and savoury dishes, however these days it's used in a wide array of foods or ‘food like' products. MSG is made from fermenting corn, sugar beets or sugar cane. This fermentation results in a white crystal that looks like sugar or salt and blends well into many foods. Over the years MSG has been known to report the following reactions in people: Headaches Flushing Sweating Rapid, fluttering heartbeats Chest pain Stomach upsets Nausea Behavioural issues in children Obesity Eye damage Fatigue and disorientation Depression Asthmatics should avoid We created this fabulous little ebook after our 7 Day Challenge - you can purchase the full book HERE. Rather than the usual comedic pinata loaded with Throng members and guests of all flavors, this week the Bomb Shelter is more like a cookie with precious few wholesome ingredients and, what's worse, it has raisins: SK was joined by the angsty side of his brain, KS Notrom; the insistent side of his brain, Babette; and the perplexed side of the Throng, Allen's Wife. The 1st segment mimicked the light confection known as the macaroon in that it's subject matter of pit-bulls on the bus and pigeon fornication was colorful but ultimately tasteless. Next came the black licorice portion of the show with the discussion of activities in San Francisco for the month of April. (Even when free, these didn't sound appetizing to anyone and, quite frankly, could be poisonous) Then the piece that should be resisted: The theme for the night - Ice cream. Shops were discussed and rated for taste, creaminess, cost, atmosphere and, most importantly, volume. It was determined that most were too loud - the result of undisciplined children of hipsters. The conclusion drawn by all concerned was that Swenson's is San Francisco's best tasting ice cream, the former Thrifty drug store had the best shaped ice cream, frozen yogurt shop Fraiche had the best alternative to ice cream, and any one using the word "artisinal" in this market should just stop it - it's ice cream. In the end, Babette takes over the show because she's the Maraschino cherry in SK's ambrosia.

Ep. 100 - We did it!!! 100 episodes... and what better way to celebrate than by finally getting chef/writer/food show host/TV sitcom creator Eddie Huang to come on and shoot the shit about music with us (among other things.) Back on episode #35 w/ Francis Lam, we promised you Eddie and it only took us 65 episodes to deliver on that promise! In addition to asking EH about his first albums and first concert, we also ask him what it was like to eat ribs with 2 Live Crew's Luther Campbell and he cops to being completely awestruck by Cam'ron. There was also a lot of hip hop talk, 19% of which Zach understood. Our friend Jeff Miller from Thrillist steps in as guest host. Eddie has his own podcast called Monosodium Glutamate, his MTV show "Snack off" debuts July 10th, and he has a sit-com coming soon to ABC called "Fresh off the Boat"- which is based on his memoir of the same name.
Eddie & Elena talk about Eddie's engagement, Elena's days on the wedding circuit, and whether or not there is a god.

HealthyEatingOnTheRun.com. MSG and GMOs are two things that you definitely want to avoid in your food. MSG is Monosodium Glutamate which goes by many different names and is a flavor enhancer added to almost all processed foods. GMOs are Genetically Modified Organisms that have never been tested long-term on humans for safety. Almost all soy, corn, cotton and canola on the market is genetically modified or engineered (GE) and these are widespread in the foods you eat even from the produce department. To celebrate its one year anniversary, this month’s Masters of Social Gastronomy Podcast takes on its namesake: monosodium glutamate (MSG)! Savory spice or fatal flavor? Sarah Lohman of Four Pounds Flour will track MSG back to its source in traditional Japanese food, showing how time and money can turned an innocuous plant into the darling of mass production Soma will take on modern-day interpretations of MSG, from its role in “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” to its many relatives hiding in everyday foods. Science fact will be separated from science fiction as myths are deflated and truths laid bare.
BONUS TRACK! "Storytime" from the Monosodium Glutamate lecture. Soma and Sarah toast to one year of MSG talks with fish sauce diluted to the color of "honey wine." Sarah bitches about the deception propagated by chic kitchen product "Umami Paste #5."
Apsartame, better known as Nutrasweet, or AminoSweet, and its new cousin, Neotame, a much larger, much sweeter, and potentially even more toxic update of the Aspartame molecule, are all over the place. Virtually everything you put in your mouth labeled ‘sugarless’ or ‘diet’ contains these pernicious, toxic substances.Nutrasweet’s original manufacturer was Searle corp. They tried to get Nutrasweet declared safe for consumption, but the body of evidence against it was too strong. In the lab, it caused the following forms of cancer tumors in cellular cultures: brain, pancreatic, breast and uterine. In more recent tests, leukemia, lymphoma and kidney cancers were discovered. If one examines the structure of the Aspartame molecule itself, it’s easy to see why it could be so deadly. The molecule mates what is essentially a precursor to wood alcohol, the type of alcohol that causes blindness and seizures, to two amino acids, so that your body readily recognizes it as a nutrient. During digestion, this deadly methanol and also formaldehyde form from these precursor chemicals.I happen to know a researcher who worked in Cornell’s neurochemistry program when Searle came calling with their new product. They asked the chairman of the department what percentage of people would be adversely affected by ingesting their new sweetener. When he replied that he thought that 15% could suffer ‘irreversible neurological damage’, the Searle people actually smiled. 15% was a reasonable number to these people, given that the Cyclamate artificial sweeteners had just been pulled from the market, and there was pressure to do the same with saccharine. There was just too much money to be made to let the health of a few million people get in the way.Since those early studies were not encouraging, (and in fact the FDA was set to rule against them), Searle started paying for their own studies, and to increase their chances of getting to market even more, they hired consummate Washington insider Donald Rumsfeld as CEO. The day after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration, the FDA (with the hasty addition of a 6th voting member) abruptly reversed course, and legalized Nutrasweet.Nutrasweet, Neotame and the venerable Monosodium Glutamate are all classified as Excitotoxins, toxic compounds mated to amino acids in such a way that the body sees them as nutrients and absorbs them readily. It’s like some kind of diabolical Trojan Horse, ushering in the most potent poisons masquerading as nutrients. Many people know of the MSG headache, or the fuzziness that can accompany a Nutrasweet binge, but are unaware what these warning signs really attest too. They portend potential cellular changes, neurological destruction, endocrine imbalances, and immune system chaos. There is striking evidence that Nutrasweet can also cause or help cause Macular Degeneration, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease (it’s been shown to produce pinholes in the brains of rats), Graves Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and several other neurological and autoimmune conditions, as well as the numerous, aforementioned cancers. Both Searle, and their later parent purchaser, Monsanto, vociferously fought any attempts to get this highly-toxic substance off the market. Their only concern is shareholder equity; Profits, growth and dividends trump any moral qualms. If the FDA really cared about you and I, every cow would be tested for mad Cow disease, factory farms would be forced to deal with their huge waste lagoons, cruelty to animals, and antibiotic and steroid use. Nutrasweet, Neotame, and a host of other dangerous chemicals including trans fats, Olestra, and genetically-modified crops would be illegal. Instead, we have all become unwitting lab rats, with a stew of biochemical experiments and genetically modified substances combining and recombining in completely un-knowable ways in our guts, our bloodstreams, our nerves, and in our brains. There was a hoax on the Internet that Neotame would be allowed, unlabeled, in Organic foods. I’m very relieved to know that this is not true. But beware: Monsanto, and all of the big agribusiness companies are constantly working to weaken the USDA Organic standard to the point that it’s as utterly meaningless as the word ‘natural’ has become on food labels.Rid yourself of these toxins. Grow your own food and get involved with your local organic food growers and purveyors, and petition the federal government to maintain and enhance the integrity of the USDA organic standard, and to return the FDA to its mandate: serving and protecting the people, instead of furthering corporate interests at the people’s expense.
