Ahhh, vinyl records. For audiophiles and other assorted music nerds (know any of them!?!), it's the passport to sonic bliss. For others, it's an archaic, delicate, noisy and inconvenient medium. Whatever side of the fence you're on, there are albums that you gotta experience on vinyl - whether it be for the sound quality, the artwork, the liner notes, the overall presentation, or maybe it's not available digitally. Remarkably, decades after the format was declared all but dead and buried, it has experienced a huge resurgence in popularity. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the commercial vinyl LP, In The Groove: The Vinyl Record and Turntable Revolution from Motorbooks is an authoritative and visual celebration of the history and culture of record collecting and turntables, from the first 78 to the explosive growth of vinyl in the last decade, with entertaining sidebars highlighting classic record stores, legendary labels and iconic artwork. Designed to satisfy readers from the most discerning of collectors to those new to the passion, In The Groove gathers five of the finest music scribes to contribute a chapter each. One of those writers (covering record stores) is our Third Lad this week, Gillian Gaar. Gillian G. Gaar is a Seattle-based author. Her first book, She's A Rebel: The History of Women in Rock & Roll was published in 1992. In addition to her own books, she has appeared in various anthologies, including The Nirvana Companion, Trouble Girls: The Rolling Stone Guide to Women in Rock, Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History, Leonard Cohen on Leonard Cohen: Interviews and Encounters, Goldmine: The Beatles Digest (volumes one and two), The Best of the Beatles Book, The Stranger Guide To Seattle, 33 1/3 Greatest Hits Vol 2, A Survey of American Culture, and various editions of The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, among others. She was editorial assistant for Krist Novoselic's book From Grunge To Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy! She was also a project consultant/liner note writer for Nirvana's box set "With The Lights Out." She has written for numerous magazines, including Rolling Stone, Mojo, Q, Goldmine, The Seattle Times, The Stranger, Option, and No Depression, and was a senior editor at Seattle music paper The Rocket. She has also written liner notes for collections by Laurie Anderson, Judy Collins, Heart, Pat Benatar, Paula Cole and Mat Kearney, among others. Learn more about your ad choices. It's filled with images, history, and in-depth analyses of the incredible cars Jaguar has created year after year." Jaguar Century is the latest book by Giles Chapman. "The task was to really cover the entire century, from the very beginning of the company to now, says Chapman. It takes you from a period from before they even made a car. The first thing they did in 1922 was to produce a sidebar on the side of a motorbike." The book details the brand in the trying economic times leading up to World War II. It also covers the resetting of Jaguar during England's bleak postwar years, first with its XK120, then the XK140 and XK150. As the press information states, the new volumes also chronicle sporting saloons (i.e., sedans) like the Mark 2 and Mark X standards for four-door luxury in the 1950s and 1960s. And it reports on the unveiling of the E-Type in 1961, the vehicle often cited as the most beautiful car ever made. "I accepted the commission to do it because I thought there was a fantastic story to tell there, not just of the cars but of the people," says Giles. As the author of more than 50 books, Chapman is an award-winning writer and commentator on the industry, history and culture of cars. In 1991 became the editor of Classic and Sports Car, the top-selling classic car magazine. Giles Chapman is a prolific automotive journalist. Giles has been a freelance writer since 1994. In addition to his books, Chapman contributes to national magazines and newspapers and is a commentary on automotive history. "What I really have enjoys is stitching this whole thing together in a way I hope somebody who drives a Jaguar now and doesn't know a tremendous about the history would get to know it," Giles says. While Giles has a great appreciation for Jaguar, he doesn't own a new or used model. But he's driven many. "The original XJ6 is just an amazing pinnacle of Jaguar did," Giles says of his favorite of the manufacturer's varied offering. "It was such an extraordinary comprise between the handling of the car and the ride comfort. It's amazing how they did it. I just love driving old XJ6s. "At the time, they were like nothing else and now they continue to feel like that. It's hard to express if you haven't driven one. They're very soothing and they make you feel very proud." "Jaguar Century: 100 Years of Automotive Excellence" is scheduled for publishing Sept. 28, 2021, by Motorbooks. The hardcover is 224 pages and is priced at $75. Ryan Brutt is a writer and photographer who exudes enthusiasm about muscle cars. His interest is overtly apparent in his new book, Muscle Car Barn Finds. It details the art of automotive scavenger hunts. Brutt, self-described as an Automotive Archaeologist, lives in Chicago. The contributing rider to Hot Rod Magazine is our guest on Episode 34 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the book and Brutt's trials and tribulations as he travels through several states on his mission to discover hundreds of often abandoned rarities. Consider Brutt's premise: You're driving along a country road in Alabama and something bright orange in nearby field attracts your attention. It's parked near an old barn and partly covered in mildew. You pull into what remains of the driveway in the abandoned lot and your hunch is correct. It's a 1966 Mustang Fastback. It looks neglected. But a good washing later, it's presentable, and another vintage muscle car has a new life. The same scenario could involve a station wagon in Michigan, a Mercedes-Benz in Florida or a long-forgotten pick-up truck in Texas. They're all known by the automotive colloquialism, Barn Finds. It's the sub-set of muscle car barn finds Brutt honors in his new book of the same name. Sub-titled “Rusty Road Runners, Abandoned AMXs and Camaros and More!” (Motorbooks, $35), the 160-page hardback details the author's treks to uncover muscle car enthusiasts' dream machines. “These old warriors aren't dead, just resting,” reads a segment of the book's promotional material. “A drive in the country or through a small-town back street will reveal them lurking under tarps, hidden behind garage doors and stashed behind fences from prying eyes.” While traveling in eastern Tennessee, Brutt finds what he had long heard about but couldn't believe until it appeared through some roadside hedges. Past a few roads of project cars in various shapes, sizes and degrees of disarray, a storage shed was home to an array of first-generation Corvettes. “In all my travels, I had never seen such a collection of really early Corvettes,” he writes. “There were three rows of them with three or four cars per row.” Brutt also details a no-so-pleasing occasion when he faced the wrath of a husband and wife, who, let's say, didn't exactly provide a warm welcome.
