This week we are entering a low-resolution virtual reality and helping chimpanzees learn Shakespeare while we discuss The Lone Gunmen episodes “Madam, I'm Adam” and “Planet of the Frohikes”! We're talking the running bit of The Lone Gunmen newspaper being found in the trash, whether or not Jimmy would be jealous of Mulder's existence, Frohike getting into a beef with a child, finding goo in EVERY crevice, Yves being TLG's emergency contact, that evil scientists can be wives too, and get really excited about the star of the show Maniac Marvin. We check in on Yves playing the Sims, get inspiration from a pro wrestler-themed wedding, wonder where we can sign up for the Monkey Liberation Army, note how Thomas Schnauz really got nepo-friended along in his career, and lament Ned Ryerson's lack of a Blockbuster card. I mean, are you even alive if you don't have a Blockbuster card?Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

All-time great character actor Stephen Tobolowsky might be best known as Ned Ryerson from GROUNDHOG DAY, but his film and television credits number in the hundreds. His thoughtful character choices for today are appropriately iconic -- George Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life and the Monster from Bride of Frankenstein. But the real highlight of this episode are Stephen's riveting storytelling and invaluable wisdom about the hidden gifts a seeming catastrophe can bring.***With Jordan Crucchiola and Stephen Tobolowsky
Any biography of Stephen Tobolowsky must mention, and possibly right at the beginning, his performance as Ned Ryerson, the annoying insurance salesman in Groundhog Day. But that's far from the only big credit in Stephen's IMDb page, which also includes films like Memento and Thelma & Louise. Long before he was the hugely successful actor he is today, Stephen was just another guy trying to get by in New York and that's where he met The Most Boring Man in the World, working the afternoon shift at a local bar. Stephen fills us in on that experience in a conversation that will amuse you, delight you, and put you to sleep. We also hear about Stephen's long ramble through New York whilst escaping a tryst he did not care to join.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber? The intro on today's episode is, to quote Ned Ryerson, "a doozy". Jon and Fintan talk about running a bit, as Fintan has a race this weekend; they also get into the socialist tendencies of orca pods, and... well, it just goes everywhere. Jon also shares one of his favourite-ever stories [0:00 - 42:36]. Then the chaps are joined by Armalytix' Jeremy Lever; Jon also incorrectly states that he's the only guest this week, sorry Layla. He got confused! Jeremy talks about a really hot topic – open banking, frictionless checks, and what we could and perhaps should be doing. What are the issues, and why? We do it all on this episode [42:37 - 1:37:46]. Thanks as ever to our wonderful sponsors, the virile and alluring BWise Media and the nubile but coquettish Clarion Gaming. Slainte!
Grab literally whatever will help you not be scared shitless, and whatever you do, DON'T LOOK UNDER THE BED! Liz and Mike discuss Liz's imaginary friend Paul, the physics of swimming in a pool full of Jell-O, the correct way to pronounce "mayonnaise," and much more! Also, somehow Groundhog Day's Ned Ryerson monologue makes an appearance - don't miss it!

Tonight, we host our very special guest: Stephen Tobolowsky! Stephen Tobolowsky is one of the leading character actors today. He has appeared in over 200 movies and television shows. He has played everything from Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day to Sandy Ryerson in Glee. He has appeared almost naked as Stu Beggs on Californication and has worn the same suit for seven years as Principal Earl Ball on The Goldbergs. Stephen currently appears as Dr. Leslie Berkowitz in the new generation remake of Norman Lear's One Day at a Time. Seasons 1-3, at present, are still available on Netflix. PopTV and CBS aired Season 4. Stephen has always been a storyteller. In sixth grade, he won his school's storytelling contest and over that summer won the award as best storyteller in the City of Dallas (13 years old and under division.) That impulse led him into writing. He wrote the screenplay for True Stories with David Byrne and Beth Henley. He wrote and performed his storytelling films Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party and The Primary Instinct. His labor of love has been The Tobolowsky Files, created with producer David Chen. What began as a behind-the-scenes movie podcast has become a sometimes funny, sometimes compelling portrait of a human life - as described by Miles McNutt here. The Tobolowsky Files is available at tobolowskyfiles.com and on Apple Podcasts. Early episodes were also previously broadcast on KUOW 94.9 in Seattle, on WFPL in Louisville, KY and many stations through Public Radio International (PRI). He has two books of stories published by Simon & Schuster: The Dangerous Animals Club and My Adventures with God. This week on Every Rom Com we’re covering the foundational movie of the time loop genre - “Groundhog Day”! You’ll definitely learn something new, as we discuss everything from its filming location, to the story behind the script, to the history of Groundhog Day itself. We also delve into time loop ethics, pitch perhaps our wildest sequel idea yet, and proffer intriguing theories about Ned Ryerson. And of course we cover the romance of it all, though the most romantic part of this episode might be how Steve from “For Me These Films R The Juice” would choose to spend his time loop! Don’t miss this fact and fun-filled episode on an essential film! 0:00-12:22 - Intro, Monadnock Underground Updates From Zoe, Introducing Steve Doyle From The Podcast “For Me These Films R The Juice”! The inspiration to begin For me, these Films R the Juice came from listening to The Rewatchables and The Cine-Files podcasts and also returning to the cinema after the Covid lockdowns. These things reignited Steve’s passion for film and made him think, 'I’m going to give that a try.' The first 7 episodes of For me, these Films R the Juice are solo efforts by Steve, focusing on deep dives into some of his favourite and most seen films such as Pulp Fiction, Shaun of the Dead & No Country For Old Men. Episode 8 onwards features a guest with whom he discusses a film or film topic including a Tom Cruise Film Draft with Edward from That 80s Movie Podcast and Wayne from Recasted 2.0. Steve was a big cinephile from his mid teens to early twenties. During this period he started to gain a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for film acting, film making and film history by taking an A-Level in Film Studies and subscribing to Empire Magazine. These two avenues, along with sharing the same passion for film with two of his best friends, made Steve become fascinated by certain actors (Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Ed Norton, Ray Liotta) directors (Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppolla, Oliver Stone) and film history (the book ‘Easy Riders, Raging Bulls’, Film Documentaries and DVD ‘Making Ofs’). Episode 9 of the podcast in which Steve is joined by the close friends mentioned, Dan and Dean, to compare Al Pacino and Robert De Niro really conveys their joint love of film at that time. Outside of podcasting Steve has recently started a new job within his local hospital’s Cancer Support department which he is enjoying and finding very rewarding. Other than work, podcasting, watching films, and getting to his local driving range whenever he can, Steve enjoys spending time with his wife and t

Ned Ryerson joins Mike and Brad to talk defi gaming, under-communicating vs. over-communicating, and who PV should be solving for right now: the hardcore collectors like us or the masses. The group talks about buying PV assets as media products or for their utility. We jump over to a deep discussion on planet valuations being down. The feeling as a PV 1.0 collector is distinct from the feeling of a PV 2.0 collector. It was a wide-ranging conversation with Ned, a second time guest of the pod. We look forward to more appearances from him! Thoughts? Suggestions? Email us! Reach out to Mike aka SpaceWalk via Twitter and read the latest MetaVault Newsletter here. Steven now introduces his guest today: Aaron Levine, who is an insurance broker (Financial Products), the founder & CEO at LG Insurance Agency, and the host of the ... "and Insurance podcast". He and his family have created a family business: Wind Mill Restaurants (Gourmet Fast Foods). Steve mentions during Aaron's introduction that he's passion is to create opportunities for others within insurance as well as solve problems in fields related to business operations. Aaron tells about his career history since he started spraying cars at his Dad's business. He takes pride in having learnt about honesty and responsibility by working and meeting people in service related businesses. After releasing his own brand in New Jersey (2007), Aaron has been recognized as an Illustrated Member of different Corporations. Before the break, Steve asks him about his journey and Aaron answers that for him it is really important to interact with his family since he was a young boy he loved meeting and working with people as well as he loved learning how to be kind and respectful to others. This is his position nowadays. He tries to be honest because that 's something he feels comfortable with after having grown up. Steve keeps asking him about his professional aspect and Aaron says to him that there are different communities and to take part of these communities ‘makes me happy, it's a great world'. Segment 2:How have businesses changed since the 60s? Steve starts to ask Aaron since he is really interested in knowing Aaron's method and this answers: by continuing learning after receiving education. Education it's the most important. He adds that he teaches his team the concept ‘Product Price' in order to identify the different requirements as well as they talk about the risks, etc and study how to protect the money, the property, etc, in which Aaron and his team take into account the change that new technologies have done. Steve is interested in knowing about Insurance at Aaron's restaurant chain: Have you tried to contact your clients in case of a catastrophe…(any kind of scenario)? Aaron answers that he is always adapting his business to new changes (Veganes…). Steve says that the influence of the messages insisting on ‘by this, by this' doesn't work. Aaron agrees with him and he continues educating and telling them to keep serving people.Segment 3After the break, Steve asks Aaron about business management because sometimes the owner's effort can be madness. Steve wants to know a little bit more of Aaron's ‘...and Insurance Podcast'. He replies to him that this show has been an idea from his marketing team. It is his second experience with podcasts. He mentions that he started working in a podcast in which he shared his own story and journey with other business owners because he considers that they could grow their community up. In 2020, Aaron started with his local show (podcast). He used to book guests and create more and more content with really good reviews at the end. He says that he wants to work with local services to connect people with them. He really likes what he does and he mentions that his show is not on live, but it is all edited. His format normally is a 20 minute show since he likes to consume content in a short time. Steve loves what Aaron does: It is very powerful the interaction with his community. Steve wants to hear some different stories that he does. Aaron says that people have lots of emotions; laugh, cry, etc due to the TV influence. He gives some examples about different types of insurance. Apart from this, there are some examples that he likes to ‘join' since he has to learn different policies, language etc to make sure that he influences and his clients think that they are in the right place. Steve agrees with him and even though he likes the examples that Aaron tells him. Segment 4In this last segment, Aaron says that he is a big fan of meeting different partners and having the knowledge and education to understand the insurance policies. As Aaron states: ‘My passion is to help others'. He highlights that he doesn't like to have claims but when it happens, he supports them and tries to make everything work properly. He gives some advice to people, just in case they cannot manage a situation and looks for a way to support them. Steve keeps his thoughts about Aaron and what he does.

Amy Vorpahl, Jared Logan, and Demi Adejuyigbe stan Ned Ryerson and name fictional vampires.
You know "that guy" in your neighborhood who you swear played Ned Ryerson in Groundhog day. You know, the insurance agent from high school who says "You can never have enough insurance right? Am I right or am I right?" You still can't figure out why you either never hear from your financial professional or you can't get them to leave you alone about a trade or insurance change. Darrin Gunnell was fed up with it and was willing to spend some time on The Financial Call allowing me to pull back the curtain for him of financial professionals' compensation and motivations. Listen up, it will finally make sense.
If you're reading this, you probably don't know the name Stephen Tobolowsky. But I'll give you some hints. Ned Ryerson. (From "Groundhog Day") Jack Barker. (From "Silicon Valley") Sound familiar? Stephen Tobolowsky is one of the main characters and actors in one of my favorite TV Shows, Silicon Valley. He also plays the MOST annoying character in Groundhog Day. He's been in 200 movies and a thousand other things including Seinfeld, Thelma & Louise, Heroes and the list goes on. But he did something weird. He wrote a book. And when I read it I thought, "who the hell is this guy?" There are only two ways someone could write this book..." My Adventures with God". ONE: If they were incredibly broken as a human being somewhere in their lives and then they climbed back out of that hole by thinking all these intense and philosophical thoughts. TWO: They were just born this way... I still haven't figured out which one. I have to admit I didn't understand parts of Stephen's book. And not because it was bad, (I loved it), but because I had to stop and think. His thoughts are so valuable and I really wanted to know what they meant. I was pretty happy he was able to come on my podcast. He taught me that we're all writing and choosing our narratives to some extent... "Well I think on a personal level, we all end up developing narratives," Stephen said, "Either it's instinct or sometimes it's choice. I think we live in the dark so much of the time that we need metaphors to find our way. And I believe having a philosophy is only useful if it helps you see in the dark." So I asked him how do we begin to take control of our own narratives? Because we to some extent, I can't just surrender to the narratives that has been given to me. That takes away my freedom and ability to reinvent. Stephen told me this, "We're all living on borrowed time." This podcast shows you a window into a man's desire to connect with the deeper meaning on time and what it means to be alive. Thanks for reading! This is a very special episode of the Dana Gould hour podcast, not the least of which because it came out on schedule. I'm happy to welcome back to the show actor and author Stephen Tobolowsky. Stephen is a man after my own heart. He's an actor, an author, a musician. He is the epitome of those people who's name rings a bell and then you see them and say, "Oh THAT guy!" He played Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day, he was the other amnesiac in Memento, he was Commissioner Jarry on Deadwood, the list goes on and on and on and on. He has a much beloved show on public radio, which is also a podcast, called the Tobolowsky Files and now he has new book entitled My Adventures With God. It's not so much a religious book, thank God, but it is the story of his ups and down in life, catastrophes, successes, and his struggle to obtain some sort of connection with a power greater than himself. As he writes so eloquently, "It's hard to believe in nothing. Even cats believe in suppertime. As much as we love certainty, we are often shaped by the invisible, the unexplainable--something we call faith. We are inclined to acknowledge the holy. Even if it is only a paper heart we find in an old suitcase." Stephen is the best storyteller I know, and that's saying a lot and I'm honored he's here. Joining Stephen is author Maggie Rowe. Maggie has been a good friend of mine for a long, long time. If you had asked me "Of all your friends, who would you say was the most, you now, 'normal'? Maggie would have been high on the list. And then, one day, while a-shootin' at some food, she casually mentioned that she had spent time in a psychiatric hospital and I went, "Oh realllllllly?" Her story is utterly fascinating and is the subject of her new book Sin Bravely. Maggie grew up in a moderately religious household but at a very young age, became obsessed with the fear that she was going to Hell. She struggled with this throughout her adolescence. Have you ever had a beautiful young girl walk up to you in a shopping mall and tell you you were going to Hell? If so, it might have been Maggie. Eventually, realizing she was heading down a road where she might end up, shall we say, something-something for Cocoa Puffs, Maggie checked herself into a Christian psychiatric hospital. I know, to many of you that might sound like a contradiction in terns, but you have to hear the story. It includes a former biker and meth-head struggling with anger management issues, a set of identical twins tormented by erotic fantasies. I'm honored to have both Maggie and Stephen on this episode. http://DanaGould.com
