In our most recent episode, we explored the challenges Native American Tribes and Pueblos face when trying to get into the cannabis industry in New Mexico. Because the plant is still federally illegal, Sovereign Nations are finding creative ways to get in on the business, including the two intergovernmental agreements Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham recently signed with the Pojoaque and Picuris Pueblos. These agreements are different than the compacts that Tribal Governments often engage in for other businesses like casinos. The main difference is that the intergovernmental agreements do not include any revenue sharing with the state. Last episode we talked about why Pojoaque Pueblo wanted to get into the business. This time, we turn to Picuris Pueblo, which has already had a series of headaches trying to navigate these tricky waters. Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick learn about that history, and the Pueblo's plans now that it is armed with the intergovernmental agreement. As usual, Andy also has more reporting on this and other topics over at NM Political Report. Compacts are a term you may have heard connected to Tribal gaming operations like casinos. They are agreements that Sovereign Nations make with a State government, and often include revenue sharing between the two entities. And now, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham recently announced intergovernmental agreements with two Pueblos related to the state's newest industry: cannabis. But, as this episode's title indicates, these agreements are not in fact compacts, but something different. Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick find out more about those differences, and why these two Tribal Governments are dipping their toes in this new industry, despite cannabis's continued status as being federally illegal. This week, they talk to Pojoaque Pueblo, but be sure to tune in for our next episode, when Picuris Pueblo takes center stage, to discuss the long and winding road that lead them to this current agreement. Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick are joined by the creative team behind the podcast NM CannaCast to talk about the state of the cannabis industry in New Mexico just a little over one year after the passing of the Cannabis Regulation Act. The group talks about taxes, equity, finances and why there is still so much confusion out there about this industry. The focus of this podcast has always been to take a look at recreational use cannabis as a legitimate business and industry. And the financial challenges are many. In our most recent episode (Season 4, Episode 5) we looked at the issues news businesses face securing loans and basic banking services when dealing with a product that is still considered federally illegal. We got a lot of response to that episode, and we want to share what we learned with you in this follow up. And for the most part, the news appears to be good for those trying to break into the industry in New Mexico. Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick talk with Shannon Cox, Cannabis Program Executive with Southwest Capital Bank, about their ever-expanding approach to lending to cannabis businesses. We also learn more about risk management and insurance coverage for these businesses with Kenny Byrd, a risk Management Specialist. We even discuss workers compensation issues within this industry and what best practices seem to be when it comes to workplace accidents. Also, we end with Andy updating us all on some of his most recent cannabis reporting, which you can find at the following links. We love your feedback and it really does inform us on which direction to pursue next. So, do us a favor and let us know what we missed, or what you'd like to hear more about in an upcoming episode of "Growing Forward." Getting into the legal recreational-use cannabis industry creates several unique challenges. Maybe none a bigger hurdle than securing financing. As we have touched on before in this podcast, banking options remain limited because of the federal status of cannabis. But that just scratches the surface of the potential financial stumbling blocks for new businesses. Factor in lawmakers' desire to create opportunities for equity and diversity in the industry, and the challenge is clear. In this episode we explore in depth what banking is like for cannabis businesses and also learn more about a new state lending program designed to help ease the burden. The day many had been waiting for finally arrived on Friday, April 1st, 2022. That was the day legal recreational-use cannabis sales started in New Mexico, after the state legislature passed the Cannabis Regulation Act in 2021. According to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham's office, business was indeed booming over the inaugural weekend. The state reported 5.2 million dollars in sales through the first weekend. Three and a half million of that was recreational-use with another $1.7 million in medical cannabis sales. “New Mexico was ready for this historic opportunity to end prohibition,” said Cannabis Control Division Director Kristen Thomson. “Whether it's people moving from the illicit market to the safe, regulated legal market or brand-new customers excited to try high-quality New Mexico products for the first time, New Mexicans supported cannabis businesses in record numbers this weekend.” “In every state that launched adult-use sales before New Mexico, some retailers sold out on opening day,” Thomson said. “In New Mexico, that was simply not the case. Customers and patients across the state were all able to get the products or medicine they wanted and needed. Through careful regulatory planning hand-in-hand with industry, New Mexico cannabis producers have done something that's never been done before. This weekend's successful launch is something we can all be proud of.” In this episode, hosts Andy Lyman (New Mexico Political Report) and Megan Kamerick (KUNM) visited several dispensaries on opening day to find out why this landmark was so important to them and what they think the long-term potential is for the industry. The clock is ticking to the start of legal recreational-use cannabis sales in New Mexico. April 1st at noon is the first time people can buy cannabis without having a medical card. So, how ready is the state for this new industry? We check in with Kristen Thomson, Director of the New Mexico Cannabis Control Division, to find out. Specifically, the Growing Forward team wants to know if there is concern about a shortage of supply, given the aggressive timeline for this rollout. In addition, lawmakers failed to make an adjustment to the Cannabis Regulation Act during the recent regular legislative session. We also find out the role social media like TikTok and Instagram is having in educating people about the science of cannabis. Riley Kirk is very active on both platforms and also co-hosts a podcast with Dr. Miyabe Shields called Smoke 'n Science. Kirk helps explain some of interesting new research about the possibility that cannabis could ward off COVID-19. But, she also explains the differences between smoking cannabis, and using other types of the plant like vapes, edibles and tinctures. This week, we wrap up Season 3 of the podcast with a grab bag of topics. For starters, we introduce you to the state's first ever Director of the Cannabis Control Division. Kristen Thomson has spent years in the industry, mostly in Colorado, as a lobbyist. Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick find out why she wanted to take on this job, and how she will avoid any potential conflicts of interest from her previous work. In addition, we get to the bottom of some of the lingering questions about water and cannabis, with John Romero of the Water Resource Allocation Program. They also discuss what we know about our water outlook and how a new cannabis industry might affect our ongoing drought. Andy and Megan also break down some of the most recent headlines on cannabis, including Bernalillo County's decision to ban indoor consumption areas once the recreational-use market is up and running. Also in the news is a new state program to offer microbusiness loans for people looking to break into the industry. Read more on that story in Andy's reporting for New Mexico Political Report. We'll be back in 2022 with an all new season of "Growing Forward." Until then, have a great holiday season and stay safe, and stay healthy! There was big news this week on the cannabis front in New Mexico. As our co-host, Andy Lyman first reported, the state has now issued its first cultivation license. This is no doubt a big step for the recreational market in New Mexico, but it still leaves countless other applications in limbo with time running out to get plants in the ground in time for the first day of legal sales on April 1, 2022. A big part of the push to create a legal cannabis industry in New Mexico was the idea of automatic expungements for those with past cannabis-related convictions or arrests. The idea is simple, to try and undo some of the wrongs inflicted on especially people of color during the longstanding war on drugs. But, what does "automatic" really mean? And how is the process going so far? The clock is ticking down for people hoping to break into the state's forthcoming recreational cannabis market. Would-be producers are still weaving their way through the licensing process, and that path has been anything but smooth so far. This week, we talk to three different business owners, who all share similar frustrations about navigating the licensing process with the Regulation and Licensing Department and various municipal governments. Once those businesses have their licenses, those business owners can begin the process of growing and cultivating. But, unless those pieces are all in place soon, the chances they can have product ready for the market by next April 1st, when the recreational market kicks off, is very much in doubt. Read more about their concerns about the state's aggressive timeline, in a recent report from co-host Andy Lyman at NM Political Report. Water has been another constant concern and theme of this new industry, as it is with all agricultural businesses in New Mexico. But, what about the other environmental impacts of growing cannabis? Researchers at Colorado State University join Andy and Megan to discuss their research about the carbon footprint of this new crop, especially in terms of indoor grows. Lastly, Megan talks with Andy about his latest report for NM Political Report, just published this morning. It examines the strange case of a solitary medical cannabis license which was granted just a day before the cannabis program shifted from the New Mexico Department of Health to the Regulation and Licensing Department. There are plenty of questions about the process used, and the business owner who got that single license, but there is no doubt, given the backlog in processing new licenses for the recreational market, that this gives Vance Dugger a clear advantage headed into 2022. The idea of consumption areas have been a potential under New Mexico's medical cannabis program for a while, but the state has yet to see a single designated consumption site set up. Part of that has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic, but could it also have something to do with confusion over exactly what constitutes a consumption area, and what the license requirements will be? These are important questions, especially as these unique locations take on a higher profile under the state's new recreational cannabis market. This week on the podcast, we learn more about the history of consumption areas, and the questions left to be answered as the state sets up rules and gets ready to accept applications for consumption area licenses. In this episode, you will also hear mentioned that the Cannabis Control Division is holding this Thursday, October 28th. Regulation and Licensing, which operates the Cannabis Control Division, will be meeting to discuss licensing requirements for manufacturer, retail and courier licensing. The group will also take public input. Also, if anyone is interested, the Cannabis Control Division is also taking new applications for the Cannabis Regulatory Advisory Committee. If you are interested, be sure to act quick, though. The deadline to apply is tomorrow, October 27th. Did you know that in some circles, we're closing in on the season known as 'Croptober'? Seems like the perfect time to really dive into the ins and outs of growing cannabis. This week, we kick things off with advice and insights from a man who knows a thing or two about growing crops. Dave Dewitt is a food historian, novelist and the self-proclaimed "Pope of Peppers." Many in New Mexico also remember him as the man behind the Fiery Foods Show. He joins New Mexico in Focus Correspondent Gwyneth Doland about why part of his green thumb also extends to growing medical cannabis, something he's been doing for quite a while now. The growing will have to wait a while longer for some folks aiming to get a production license under the new Cannabis Control Act. We caught up with one business that is still trying to get their license from the Cannabis Control Division, but as you will hear, it's anything but simple. Those would-be producers have to secure that license before they can begin growing, which means the clock is ticking if they're going to have merchandise available when the legal market kicks off on April 1st, 2022. Part of the Cannabis Control Act, passed by the New Mexico Legislature during a 2021 Special Session, included the creation of a Regulatory Advisory Committee. The group is a cross section of people with expertise or interest in this new industry, but none of the members can have direct financial interests in that industry. The 17-person panel has now been named, and already conducted its first meeting. The group will be meeting again later this month, as they offer insight and suggestions for the Regulation and Licensing Department, which is tasked with overseeing the industry. This week, we meet three members of the Committee and learn more about their specific roles and responsibility, including the equity goals set out in the Cannabis Control Act. The New Mexico Cannabis Control Division has officially started accepting cannabis cultivation license applications, after finalizing the industry rules for that segment of the industry. Already more than 400 applications have been filed. Learn more about that in co-host Andy Lyman's latest report for New Mexico Political Report. Now, the attention turns to some of the other aspects of creating a cannabis industry, including the education and training requirements. In this episode, we sit down with Shannon Jaramillo of SeedCrest LLC. Shannon has joined us before, as she continues to work of creating curriculums for colleges and universities across New Mexico. Shannon discusses what she rules she would like to see for training in the cannabis realm, as well as what kind of students she is attracting into her classrooms. Testing will be an integral part of the new recreational cannabis industry in New Mexico. But, it hasn't received a lot of attention so far. In fact, the state is largely in limbo right now when it comes to testing standards. The last attempt at updating cannabis testing rules promulgated by the state Department of Health, for medical cannabis, was essentially shot down by a state court judge. There are still old testing standards from the Department of Health, but the Regulation and Licensing Department has yet to issue rules for non-medical cannabis testing. Co-hosts Megan Kamerick and Andy Lyman visit a testing lab in Albuquerque, to find out more about the process, why those testing standards are so important, and why no one seems sure right now just how many testing labs the state will need moving forward. The wheels are moving fast in the process of setting up a legal cannabis industry in New Mexico. Recently, the Department of Regulation and Licensing announced the membership of the Cannabis Regulatory Advisory Committee, which will weigh in on the most up to date rules for producers, which are nearing finalization. Those rules will pave the way for the processing of license applications for cannabis producers, cannabis producer microbusinesses and properly licensed medical cannabis producers. Co-hosts Andy Lyman of the New Mexico Political Report and Megan Kamerick, News Director at KUNM, held a special Facebook live on August 9th to get an update on the process with Regulation and Licensing Superintendent Linda Trujillo. Trujillo also answered questions from viewers. For those who still have questions, you can still submit them to the Cannabis Control Division at the following email: RLD.CannabisControl@state.nm.us You can also leave a voicemail at (505) 476-4995. The excitement about a new cannabis industry in New Mexico is palpable, as we learned in our last episode of "Growing Forward." But, the questions about how it will all work as just as plentiful. In this episode we learn more about the timeline for rulemaking and the issuing of licenses. We also talk to some folks interested in getting into the business as well as folks lining up to offer a helping hand... at a cost. We also talk to law enforcement officials about the different approaches they will need to take and how they plan to navigate this new era in New Mexico. The Green Rush is on here in New Mexico, now that the wheels are in motion for a legal cannabis industry. Rules are still being written and refined, but those wanting to get into the business are working fast and furious. She released a book, At the Precipice: New Mexico's Changing Climate, in September 2020 that discusses how climate change affects the state. Join us as we learn about drought, climate change and what we can do about it. We also talk with meteorologist Daniel Porter from the National Weather Service in Albuquerque about the recent heatwave that brought new weather patterns to parts of world unaccustomed to extreme heat. Then the kids in the Extinction Diaries tell us about women African rangers who are saving species from extinction and arresting poachers without firing a single shot. Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson made national headlines back in the 90s by publicly advocating for the legalization of adult use cannabis. His comments were made years before the state even set up a medical cannabis program. And still today, it is one of the top things that Johnson is known for, both here in New Mexico and nationally. In a special episode of Growing Forward, co-hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick catch up with Governor Johnson to get his reaction to the New Mexico legislature's historic vote last week, sending an adult use legalization bill to the Governor's desk, along with a companion bill creating a process for the expungement of cannabis-related offenses. It's (almost) official. Recreational use of cannabis will be legal in New Mexico. After a two-day special session, lawmakers approved the cannabis regulation bill – HB 2 – which now heads to the Governor's desk for her signature. So, to put a bow on cannabis legalization, our hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick chatted with two of the bill sponsors that got it done. Another busy day in the Roundhouse, as lawmakers once again took up the legalization of adult use cannabis in New Mexico. At the time the Growing Forward team recorded this update, much of the work had been completed, and just minutes after we finished recording the Senate passed House Bill 2 the Cannabis Regulation Act by a vote of 22 to 15. The House concurred with the changes just a few minutes after that, so the measure is headed to the Governor's desk, along with Senate Bill 2, which creates automatic expungements for cannabis related offenses, as well as Senate Bill 1 which made changes to the Local Economic Development Act, or LEDA. Day one of the 2021 Special Legislative Session saw several proposals introduced dealing with the legalization of adult use cannabis in New Mexico. There are competing bills in the House and Senate, known as the Cannabis Regulation Act (in the House it is House Bill 2, and in the Senate, Senate Bill 3). Both are being treated very differently, with HB2 getting two committee assignments and SB 3 being send straight to the Senate Floor. There is also a separate bill, Senate Bill 2, which deals with expungement of some cannabis-related crimes, if SB 3 or HB 2 were to pass. And, there are also pieces of the cannabis legalization in the so-called Feed Bill, House Bill 1. Additional appropriations were included to pay for aspects of running the legal cannabis market, again should HB 2 or SB 3 pass. That led to a lot of debate about whether or not it was right to be debating these things before a legal market is even approved. Our "Growing Forward" team breaks it all down for you, as it stands right now. We'll be back again tomorrow night with another recap of day 2. And be sure to check in on co-host Andy Lyman's latest reporting over at New Mexico Political Report. Legalizing recreational cannabis was the hot ticket item of the recent New Mexico legislative session, but the last ditch effort to get it done – House Bill 12 – went up in smoke. Now, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is calling for a special legislative session to once and for all address legalization head-on. In this episode of Growing Forward, our team sat down with Politico reporter Natalie Fertig to wrap up the session with her national perspective and with advocate Moises Gonzales to talk about what he wants to see added to future cannabis legislation. A busy weekend in the Roundhouse, capped off by yes votes for Medical Aid in Dying and Mandatory Paid Sick Leave measures. But, the big news of the weekend was the lack of action on cannabis legalization, as both of the remaining bills did not come up for discussion in the Senate Judiciary Committee. One of those bills was actually pulled from consideration just minutes before the meeting. And, of course, all of the proposed measures are up against the clock, with time set to run out on this year's session at noon on Saturday. We'll be back with more updates tomorrow, and as always, let us know what issues you are tracking in this busy 60-day session. ***** No More Normal is brought to you by Your New Mexico Government, a collaboration between KUNM, New Mexico PBS , and the Santa Fe Reporter . They were also joined by Representative Javier Martinez and Senator Cliff Pirtle, along with Shannon Jaramillo and Ben Lewinger from the Cannabis Chamber of Commerce. If lawmakers approve the legalization of recreational cannabis in this year's legislative session, the issue of education and training for industry workers and medical professionals will be a top priority. This week on "Growing Forward" we dive back into this important issue. We kick off season 2 of "Growing Forward" where we left off with season 1: the 2021 Legislative Session. The Legislature convened on Tuesday, January 19th to kick off the 60-day session, which will be unlike any of us we have ever experienced before. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, lawmakers will do their work mostly remotely and the public is not allowed into the Roundhouse at all this year. There is still a lot of uncertainty about just how the peoples' work will get done over the next two months, but one thing we know is that legalizing recreational cannabis will be debated and discussed. We wanted to get a better idea of how supporters plan to attack the issue this session, so hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick sat down on zoom with Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth (D). If you want to see the interview, you can also watch on Youtube. And, you can read more about some of the legislation, as we know it right now, in Andy's latest report for the New Mexico Political Report. In this special bonus episode of "Growing Forward," we investigate some of the concerns that still exist around cannabis use and the potential legalization of recreational use in New Mexico. Dr. Brant Hager, a Psychiatrist at UNM, reached out to us recently to point out some of those risks and concerns, in relation to both recreational and medicinal use of cannabis. He spoke with hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick about what exactly those concerns are and what lawmakers still need to be considering when debating a legalization bill next year. Going into a cannabis dispensary can be confusing. Not only do patients juggle the many strangely-named strains of the plant, but they also have to figure out how to ingest it. Do they smoke the bud? A missing piece of most cannabis conversations in New Mexico, whether it has to do with medical or the potential for legalization of recreational- use, is how Indigenous Communities are impacted. It's a complicated scenario, especially when you consider the 23 Tribes in our state are all sovereign nations. This week on "Growing Forward" we dive into those sovereignty issues, and how Indigenous communities perceive the future of cannabis in their communities. The clock is officially ticking, if New Mexico wants to legalize recreational-use cannabis. That's because voters in Arizona approved a measure last week, legalizing the drug in another neighboring state. Lawmakers and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will no doubt make it a top priority for the 2021 session, but there are many questions still to be answered as the legislation is drafted. One of those questions as to do with testing and regulations. This week on Growing Forward, hosts Megan Kamerick and Andy Lyman dive into this issue as it relates to the state's medical program. As with most things, it turns out New Mexico is different than other states in how they handle testing and regulation, in a lot of different ways. The debate over medical cannabis use in New Mexico goes back to the 1970s. But it really cranked up in the 1990s, when former Governor Gary Johnson came out in support of legalization and decriminalization. It was a controversial stance at the time, but was coupled by the early stages of a push for legislation creating a medical cannabis program. That debate would last for nearly a decade, but the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act was signed into law in 2007. In this episode of "Growing Forward" we look back at that time and talk to lawmakers and advocates who worked tirelessly to create the nation's 13th medical cannabis program. Our community is large and wildly diverse, which is at the same time our strength and our weakness. #Activate10 is a movement seeking to increase communication between individuals and organizations across Fremont County and to promote positive action in our communities. Last week, County 10 shared two PSAs from prominent Wyomingites C.J. Box and the Galloway family on the importance of following Public Health and CDC recommendations to flatten the curve. The Wyoming COVID Response collaborative of funders supporting the fight against the pandemic brings you a message from the Longmire series author Craig Johnson. https://c10.wxp.io/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Craig-Johnson-Longmire.mp4 The Wyoming COVID Response collaborative partners support nonprofit organizations, communities, healthcare workers and others around the state who are addressing the multiple needs brought on by this crisis. In addition to these efforts, funding partners felt that providing a distinctly Wyoming voice by noted members of our community would be another effective way to support Wyoming's efforts to reduce the impact of the pandemic and support our local communities. Every spokesperson that we have approached has been enthusiastic to participate. We have completed two PSAs featuring the Galloway Family of Gillette and author C.J. Box of Saratoga. Future PSAs will feature former Senator Alan Simpson, author Craig Johnson, Representative Andi Clifford, and former Miss Wyoming Jessie Allen. These will be released over the next few weeks. Good morning, the New Mexico legislature is now past the halfway point of the 60-day session. The first half is traditionally pleasantries, receptions and memorials in the House and Senate. The second half is when the heavy lifting takes place. In that spirit, this short run podcast will provide you an overview of what’s making news in the roundhouse. In less than five minutes, I’ll let you know the what New Mexico media is discussing about the 60 day session by providing an overview of the stories being covered by the Albuquerque Journal, Santa Fe New Mexican, key blogs and TV news stories that catch my attention. By means of introduction, this is Tom Garrity. My public relations firm, The Garrity Group is based in Albuquerque. Following a ten year career in the news media, I moved into the public relations arena where I established my firm 21 years ago. And yes, I am the bow-tie guy on the New Mexico PBS public affairs program New Mexico in Focus where I have the opportunity to weigh-in on events of the day. In the spirit of one beggar showing another beggar where to get food, this podcast is just simply reviewing the headlines on a daily basis, nothing more. I will read through the headlines, provide credit to reporters covering the stories and hopefully you will read their stories and learn more about the issues being discussed in the New Mexico legislature. I am doing this podcast before I start my work day. Which means I am trying to get it done after a daily run, quiet time and getting ready for the day. Some morning’s I’ll have a meeting, surprise surprise, others I won’t. All that to say, I’ll try to have this updated before the work day starts, Monday through Friday until the legislative session wraps up. I will post the link on my personal twitter account @tom_garrity. The podcast is not sponsored, and if I give my opinion it might be in the form of a pun or a play on words. The focus is to share the information so we all can hopefully be more informed. For more information about the things of interest to me, you can ghost my twitter account @tom_garrity , personal blog site tomgarrity.com or check out my company’s page garritypr.com. Thank you for listening to the second half podcast.

Mark Gordon, Director/Writer Awakening In Taos is a labor of love for Director/Writer Mark Gordon. He fell in love with the Mabel Dodge Luhan story years ago when he readEdge of Taos Desert and realized that bringing this story to a wide audience through PBS was his personal calling. Since then he has dedicated himself to doing everything possible to successfully complete this production. Mark has been in filmmaking since childhood. His uncle Phillip Krasne produced The Cisco Kid movies and television seriesO’Henry Playhouse for CBS, Gunsmoke and numerous films and TV shows. Mark Gordon is a fine artist, graphic designer, photographer, web developer, and independent filmmaker. He is CEO of Vision Marketing Associates. AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FEATURE “AWAKENING IN TAOS” MAKES PASADENA DEBUT AT RED NATION INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, NOV 16 Film tells the story of social activist and patron of the arts Mabel Dodge Luhan, and her marriage to Tiwa Indian Tony Lujan of Taos Pueblo: “A woman 100 years ahead of her time” “Awakening in Taos”, an award-winning film by Mark Gordon and narrated by Ali MacGraw will screen at this year’s Red Nation Film Festival on Friday November 16, at 6 PM at the LAEMMLE PLAYHOUSE 7, 673 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101 The timing of this film’s release is serendipitous with major stories in today’s news including the nomination of a Woman President and the conflict in North Dakota. This story is set almost one hundred years ago and it involves a strong independent woman who marries a Native American and fights with his tribe to protect 600,000 acres of sacred tribal land from private sale to squatters. Like the Standing Rock Sioux, their sacred sites are desecrated and their religious practices are threatened. Taos Pueblo fought for 64 years for the return of 48,000 acres and their sacred Blue Lake, granted to the tribe by Spain in the 1500’s. It was illegally annexed as part of a National Forrest under Teddy Roosevelt. After filing many civil suits against the US Government Taos Pueblo finally succeeded by filing a First Amendment rights suit. This case was won on the right of religious freedom violated by the US Government, as they prevented the tribe from observing sacred spiritual practices. In 1970, Richard Nixon signed legislation, the first instance in history where the US Government returned Native land taken illegally. Perhaps there is a message in this story that could help the Standing Rock Sioux get the US Government to honor its original treaty with the Sioux! “Awakening in Taos” follows the personal evolution of Mabel Dodge Luhan as a writer, salon hostess, art patroness, social activist and a resident of New Mexico. Born in Buffalo, New York, Mabel was a woman unique to her time. Her influence extended into the world of arts, music, literature and activism for social change. In her late 30s she experienced a life-altering arrival into a small town in Northern New Mexico and embraced the Taos Pueblo Indians in a way that seized the attention of the artistic and literary world. Her unconventional marriage to Antonio Lujan, a full-blooded Tiwa Indian from Taos Pueblo, created a revolutionary bridge between two cultures. Mabel and Tony helped to defeat federal legislation in 1924 that would have taken away 600,000 acres of sacred land belonging to the 19 tribes of New Mexico. Mabel lured progressive thinkers and artists, including D.H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, Willa Cather, Dorothy Brett, Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe and others to the remote town of Taos to attend her salons. Many of these visitors stayed for periods of time and several remained their entire lives. Mabel's home and salons made an extraordinary contribution to the culture of Taos County and the State of New Mexico. Luhan was a writer and advocate for the arts, women’s rights and Native American culture in a time when women were still fighting for the right to vote. Shot entirely in New Mexico with a local cast and crew, the film features breathtaking cinematography and aerial footage of Taos landscapes and landmarks. These physical features produced a visual response captured in 20th-century paintings and photos by Mabel’s guests. It was a book, “Edge of Taos Desert: An Escape to Reality” written by Mabel herself that piqued Gordon’s interest and set him off on a ten-year journey to get the book transformed into a film worthy of the topic. Filmmaker Gordon assembled a large team of writers, editors, art experts, historians and documentary producers to bring the many varied details of Luhan’s life into sharp focus. Actress Ali MacGraw happened to sit next to him on a plane and they began discussing the book, which she already loved. She offered to read some pages at a fundraiser in Taos and then signed on when the project was green lighted. Through a biographer of Luhan’s, Gordon met actress Leslie Harrell Dillen who wrote and performed a one-woman show portraying Mabel. She joined the production and appears as Mabel’s voice reading her words from books and letters. “Awakening in Taos: The Mabel Dodge Luhan Story” won Best Feature made in New Mexico at the 2015 Santa Fe Film Festival. The film has received special recognition and an award for Best Writing at the Hollywood Independent International Film awards. Awakening in Taos was produced in partnership with New Mexico PBS. The film will be shown November 16th at 6:00 pm at the at the Red Nation Film Festival on Friday November 16, at 6 PM at the LAEMMLE PLAYHOUSE 7, 673 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101 For tickets and information: http://www.rednationff.com/awakening-in-taos/ Or call (310) 478-3836.
