Survivor: Borneo – the very first season of Survivor, debuted on Network Television in the year 2000. And with it, reality TV began to transform America’s television industry. 25 years later the Hollywood Reporter proclaims that “Reality TV is on Life Support. Sure, shows like Love is Blind, Real Housewives and new, up-and-comers like The Traitors are still very popular. But at the same time, more and more reality shows are being canceled, less episodes are being produced, and dramatically smaller budgets are being offered for any of it - indicating to both audiences and industry leaders alike that reality shows may be becoming extinct. Really, no Really! Today, the guys will be talking to Emily Nussbaum, a Pulitzer Prize winning television critic and the author of: Cue The Sun!: The Invention of Reality TV. She’ll reveal some of the reality behind reality television and how much of it isn’t reality at all. Plus, she’ll discuss the long history of the genre, and the practicalities and impracticalities of its success and possible failure. Which leads me to say this episode of our show should be called: Reality. No Reality! In 2014 she won a National Magazine Award for Columns and Commentary and in 2016 she won thePulitzer Prize for criticism. She’s written for The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Slate and The New York Times. *** IN THIS EPISODE: Is Reality TV dead? Reality TV was birthed by radio “audience participation shows”. Alan Funt was a sneaky guy with a hidden microphone that invented prank shows! “Cinéma véritéto” to Abject Bull$%*t - Defining Reality TV Non-Disclosure Agreements are WAY worse than you think. Most morally compromising? The Bachelor! Why Jason doesn’t think he’d do well on Survivor. Punking the guy who made “When Animals Attack”. Live Executions? Really? “Don’t try this at home!” born on Woody Frasure’s “That’s Incredible!” Forget Reality TV for a sec, will TV survive? Episode 86: Building surface-level credibility is easy… just pay $300 for a press release and now you can put the “as featured on” badge on your website along with logos from Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS, and any other media source that published your press release. The problem is that doing this is cheap, easy, and anyone can do it - which means that its value is very limited, and it doesn't really give you any real, legitimate credibility. That's where getting featured on Network TV is different. With the right connections and a good angle and pitch, you can get your business featured in front of millions and come out of it with a level of legitimacy and credibility that your competitors can't imitate with a cheap press release. In this episode, Mitch Carson gives us the inside scoop on how you can go from an unrecognizable, generic internet coach, to the well-known, go-to authority in your niche by getting featured on major network television. We dive deep into what producers look for in their guests, how to present yourself and pitch your business, how to make the right connections and get your foot in the door with the right people, and much more!About Mitch Carson: For the past 30+ years, Mitch has helped hundreds of speakers, authors, coaches, consultants, and business owners worldwide land TV and radio interviews, boosting their credibility instantly, and aiding them to charge premium prices for their products and services. And, as a television show host on NBC Channel 3 Las Vegas, he knows what it has done for him and his clients.Mitch is also a celebrated professional speaker and closer who has spoken on stages in 63 countries and produced over 2,000 live events in 19 countries. On today's new episode, the Bayer siblings welcome their delightful friend, writer and actor Zora Bikangaga! They ask whether their childhood selves would have found their adult selves cool? (Spoiler alert: They can stay up as late as they want and eat candy whenever they want, so...) Plus, they get into the ways they tried to act cool as kids i.e. one overall strap down, enormous pants that made it hard to walk, etc. Along those lines, Zora gets into a prolonged prank he did in college that years later ended up making him a perfect fit for the "I Love That For You" writers room! Plus Jonah reminisces about his childhood days of listening to NYPD Blue like it was on the radio, and they dig into the controversy of showing Dennis Franz's bare butt on TV (Which obviously Jonah couldn't see, but could hear?) Finally, in a rousing game of CONGRATULATIONS, YOU PLAYED YOURSELF: PRODUCT EDITION, the trio discusses what they will miss most out of the recently discontinued Starry Soda, McDonald's McCafé baked goods or—the only one most of them remember—Fruit Striped Gum. So be cool and listen to this episode!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We also spend some time previewing the playoff games that are still to come and get some insight on what the future holds regarding NFL Games being broadcasted on Streaming Services opposed to Network Television. Later on in the episode, the three get into the recent coach hirings and firings within the NBA and touch briefly on Matt Chapman's contract situation with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Join Debbie Monterrey as she engages in a lively discussion with TV Guide's Matt Roush, diving into the most captivating TV shows of 2023. From the surprising brilliance of Apple TV+'s "Lessons in Chemistry" and Hulu's indigenous-driven "Reservation Dogs" to Netflix's original and darkly humorous "Beef," the conversation delves deep into standout series that embraced diversity, originality, and compelling storytelling across streaming platforms and networks.
When we think about what SVU is "about," things like advocating for victims of sexual abuse or normalizing coming forward about abuse or copaganda generally come to mind. This episode, however, is about something entirely different. It postulates that the entire state of New Jersey is irredeemably corrupt and downright evil. From the seagulling scumbags of the cold open to the heights of political and judicial power, the Garden State would appear to have no good side. Did onerous bridge tolls, overpriced beach towns, and the inability to pump ones own gas so poison the Season 15 Writers Room as to turn them this decisively against Jersey?Sources:Luzerne "Kids For Cash' Scandal - Juvenile Law CenterTennessee Judge Who Illegally Jailed Children Plans to Retire - ProPublicaMusic:Divorcio Suave - "Munchy Business"Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Nikki B, Whitney C, D Reduble, Tony B, Zak B, Barry W, Karen D, Sara L, Miriam J, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Isabel P, Christine L, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Jason S, Tim Y, and Douglas P - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! There is very little in this world that we truly understand, especially when it comes to two geniuses like ourself, but one thing we have quite a grasp on is the world of television. Unfortunately, this is not just a dying world, but one soon to be extinct. Is this the end of an era?
Full Description Jane Velez-Mitchell started her non-profit network, UnchainedTV, with a single Go Pro camera, videotaping the stories she felt needed to be on network television, but weren't. UnchainedTV quickly evolved into a global social media network with dozens of citizen journalists going LIVE on Facebook and Instagram around the world, garnering millions of views. On a mission to share the truth about the horrific problems created by industrialized animal agriculture, UnchainedTV offers viewers delicious alternatives that are better for people, the environment and the animals. In this episode, Jane shares how she went from award-winning TV journalist, New York Times bestselling author and documentary filmmaker to running a free, vegan, CNN/Netflix-style streaming TV network.Get to know Jane Velez-Mitchell and UnchainedTV better here: https://unchainedtv.comQuote You have to always get through that period where it seems like, “Oh, no, this isn't working. Oh, my God, what did I do?” I've had those moments…there are those moments in every business. I just try to put those thoughts aside and do the next indicated thing and stay out of the results. Just prod forward – prod forward to get through a difficult point where it looks impossible.”— Jane Velez-MitchellShownotes timestamps⚠️ [02:46] The mission is to wake the world up to veganism: eating animals is causing most of our problems.
Legal guns are seldomly used in mass shootings, and if they are the person doing the shooting is usually mentally ill. Network Television has very few viewers. In the old days, big shows had millions of viewers. Today they celebrate if they have over a million.

Our dear friend Emily recently suffered through a breakup. She handled things quite well, that is, until shortly after the final conversation happened. According to her, she did something a bit petty. Listen in to see how petty this pettiness was! CJ has some complaints about a local Texas newspaper that fired shots at Austin recently by writing about how our fair city hosts the worst-rated Whataburgers in the entire state. Now, the data is technically true - Google Reviews were compiled, and Austin had the worst-rated reviews for the homegrown restaurant. But the newspaper that printed this article comes from a particular city that has long held a rivalry with Austin. Find out more in today's CJ is Fat. And is cable becoming cool again? Hosts Andy Lyman and Megan Kamerick are joined by the creative team behind the podcast NM CannaCast to talk about the state of the cannabis industry in New Mexico just a little over one year after the passing of the Cannabis Regulation Act. The group talks about taxes, equity, finances and why there is still so much confusion out there about this industry. Her credits include many critically-acclaimed series such as Desperate Housewives, Ally McBeal and Brothers & Sisters, and the American long-running classics NCIS and Criminal Minds. For two seasons, she was the Producing Director of the CBS drama Bull, following her earlier stint in that position on the CW drama The Originals. She serves on numerous committees at the Directors Guild of America (DGA), including co-chairing the Diversity Committee, which implemented the first Directors Development Initiative in 2016, including a mentorship program for rising directors. Bethany's enthusiasm for the craft has also fueled her long-term dedication to teaching the intensive Warner Brothers Directing Workshop. Her book (co-authored with Mary Lou Belli) “Directors Tell the Story: Master the Craft of Television and Film Directing” is the preeminent authority at multiple studio and network diversity programs, and in directing classes on many university campuses. In this episode, we talk about: • What an acting class taught her about directing: understanding what they go through and the vocabulary actors use • Tips for actors to make better self tapes • Advice for actors in auditioning and the process in which she is involved in casting • Being in the Dick Wolf family and working on shows like Law & Order, Chicago PD, Chicago Med, etc. and which one is her favorite • How advocating for herself led to her being let go from her first job, but how it all worked out • How she started working with her first agent • Her process for directing an episode of an already established show: read at least 5 previous scripts, every script needs to be fully understood, blocked and shot listed by Day 1 • Wrote a book Directors Tell This Story • Why she loves directing TV: She gets to shoot more, she is energized from hopping around from show to show, she gets to elevate scripts and tell different kinds of stories • Balancing choice • Directing 8 episodes of primetime network 1 hour shows in this season alone • How it's exciting to get a C script and elevate it to a B+ episode • What happens if a showrunner has a different select for a role than a director Guest: IMDb Wikipedia Twitter Website & Blog Book - Directors Tell This Story: Master the Craft of Television and Film Directing Host: Instagram: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneMiller Twitter: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneM Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mentorsonthemic Website: www.michellesimonemiller.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/24mmichelle
The answer to the question on the table would, of course depend on who you ask. It certainly has it's niche audience these days. The problem may be the fact that people in general don't want to be tied to a specific schedule to watch their shows. However, it seems to go deeper than that. Perhaps the real question that should be asked is whether or not the content that is being offered is compelling enough. NEXT WEEK: Augmenting Reality

In this episode, I’m joined by Andrew Simonian to talk all about his feature film The Take Out Move, which was made for just $3500. Andrew spent decades producing and developing television for NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, MTV, BET, and many others, before deciding to take a stab at the world of micro-budget filmmaking. By calling in favors and assembling the perfect team, he was able to pull off his 74 minute comedy thriller with a virtually non-existent budget, and is now gearing up for the festival circuit. Our discussion covers a full breakdown of Andrew’s film, why he chose to make it at this budget level, lessons learned along the way, and much more. M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Power Quotes From The Show What Fuels Troy's Soul "I stopped caring about what other people think and started focusing on what feeds my soul. What feeds my soul is being as naked as possible in the sun, being as barefoot and grounded with the earth as much as possible, and moving my body most of the day. My fuel is organic food, good water, and damn good sleep. I need to get my mind right if I'm using Wi-Fi and electricity is all around me. I need to be balanced in this world and so I put all of those elements first otherwise the worst part of me comes out. This is not only about balance, but self-medication through our natural environment." - Troy Casey Letting Our Primal Selves Shine "Every single person has that wild animal inside of them and they want to let it out whether that's through intimacy or letting themselves grow a beard. Everyone just wants to let themselves be free, hang out, and be themselves." - Troy Casey The Power Of Forgiveness "All is forgiven. Period. Forever. If I forget that, remind me. I used to be an angry guy so if someone shows that side of themselves to me, I remember that and forgive them. Even if things don't work out in business or relationships, things are still forgiven." - Troy Casey Links From Today's Show Cured Nutrition C.H.E.K Institute Bulletproof Conference Leave Wellness Force a review Scott Peterson of Refugio Altiplano City Slickers trailer Leonard Orr rebirthing practices 311 Mark Wolynn 275 Paul Chek David Deida Tony Robbins Rythmia Rev Michael Beckwith Kim Stanwood Terranova Breath As Prayer | Gwen Payne Erin Claire Jones M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Troy Casey Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Certified Health Nut Facebook YouTube About Troy Casey Leading Longevity Authority, Troy Casey, Certified Health Nut, has successfully restored physical, mental and emotional balance to clients who have failed with all other systems. The way we watch television has changed significantly in recent years with the introduction of digital channels, streaming services, and catch-up. And yet, overnight TV ratings are still how we measure the success of TV shows. So, what shall we do about TV ratings? Joining me to discuss is comedian and satirist Mark Humphries, whose Channel 10 quiz show Pointless was cancelled earlier in 2019 due to low ratings. He joins the show to talk about the highs and lows of television ratings, discovering Pointless had been axed, and the role of television comedy in a world of changing viewing habits. You can find Mark Humphries on Instagram and Twitter. Thanks for listening to What Shall We Do About...?, it means a lot! Little does this CBS Executive know that the pitch he is about to hear will change everything. Ghen Maynard hears lots of pitches for shows but this one is different. It isn’t a scripted drama or comedy series or traditional game show. There is nothing quite like it on TV and it doesn’t fit into any existing genre — but he knows one thing, he loves it. It’s an idea that would turn into a reality series set on an island and ultimately transform the primetime landscape on broadcast television and usher in a new generation of unscripted programming that would catapult his career. Ghen Maynard is the Senior Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming for CBS Television Studios. He’s the maverick who has helped develop some of reality television’s biggest hits. Early in his career, Ghen championed and brought to life the first competition reality show for Network Television… a mega-hit called Survivor. Ghen also developed and oversaw the multiple Emmy Award-winning The Amazing Race, the U.S. version of Big Brother, America’s Next Top Model as well as Kid Nation, Power of 10, and Million Dollar Password. As a drama development executive, he helped develop CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Judging Amy and The District. The list of successful shows goes on. There’s no doubt Maynard has a keen eye for what viewers like — Survivor, The Amazing Race, Big Brother and Top Model are among the longest-running reality TV franchises in the world. I caught up with Ghen just after the premiere of an unusual reboot version of the iconic 90’s teen series Beverly Hills 90210 called BH90210, which he developed and sold to FOX, and Kids Say the Darndest Things starring Tiffany Haddish, which he sold to ABC -- Once again proving that this Executive, who likes to think big, has the Midas Touch.

Sabrina Jalees is a comedian, writer, and actor who's been described as “the lesbian Ray Romano we’ve all been waiting for”. She started doing stand-up when she was 16 and has been making people laugh since on series like Netflix's "The Comedy Lineup,” “Search Party,” “Transparent,” “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Adam Devine's House Party,” “Best Week Ever” and now CBS’s brand new series, starring Patricia Heaton, “Carol’s Second Act.” After working up the courage to tell the Muslim side of her family – she was shunned for coming out - Sabrina learned the hard way that standing up and taking pride in who she was, would not only enhance her material as a comedian, but would lead to a fulfilling life, full of crazy coincidences, life changing surf lessons and an entirely unexpected career path. She has not looked back since. I caught up with her during the filming of her new series. She is now in prime time TV, proudly representing on camera something that was unimaginable to her as a kid. “Speak to Me” its the subject of today's discussion, have you ever found yourself unconsciously repeating phrases, statements, using language that is not yours? Have you suddenly awoken after the words left your mouth and said to yourself, where the hell did that come from? that's not me. I want to get into all of that on today's show and question why do we (the huddled masses) impersonate each other constantly, and most of us do it in a way that we are not even aware of? What about the unconscious repetition of certain words or phrases?“Absolutely” (I believe) started with the hit movie Rocky 1976, it started kind of slowly, But then it picked up speed and everyone everywhere in the US started saying, (instead of “I agree with you”), they opted for “Absolutely” and it picked up steam. What about here in the NY/NJ area, “it” got substituted for, “It is what it is”? How do you speak to people, how do you communicate? Do you observe what you say to people and is it authentic, or are you replaying sound bytes from your mind's memory that is not really you being your authentic self? The Reason why silence is good, it's healthy, my best friend, why Speak to me was necessary for me to write, was it really a man and woman, or was it, God? Quotes: “I love Seth Godin, the guy is so brilliant, I am reading his new book” “This is Marketing”. “He protects his intellectual integrity by doing things that most people don't do, like not watching TV, and not going on Facebook.” “My favorite strategy is silence, so I am in the Seth camp, I have not watched TV for months and months, I can't do Network Television stuff.” “Everybody has to find their own way to protect themselves from the media bombardment, I think the overstimulation does not allow your brain to process properly, in a way that is healthy for you.” The 10 most common misused phrases: 1) “I could care less” 2) “For all intensive purposes” 3) “You've got another think coming” 4) “ A complete 360” 5) “Jive with” 6) “It's a doggy dog world” 7) “On tender hooks” 8) “Runner-ups” 9) “Nip in the but”? 10) “Irregardless” About two years ago I noticed one yoga instructor started using the word “Equanimity” suddenly every Single Yoga class I attended, the instructor would start using “Equanimity” always a female, no dude is going to use that in a sentence! In the US we had an election here in 2016 and shortly after that, I remember everyone using the term Xenophobe, how many people really knew what the word Xenophobe meant or where it came from? Talking heads on all the news channels they all knew all about it. Seth Godin, the brilliant man, I am reading his new book, “this is marketing”, he stopped watching TV, does not go on FB…………me 2 on the TV, network TV is so horrible and unimaginative. It seems that after 9/11 we all decided we need a TV in every possible commercial office in the land, but don't bend over, they are coming for your orifice next! My mind is a precious thing, and I will not waste it. The Reason why silence is good, it's healthy, it's my best friend, why Speak to me was necessary for me to write, was it really a man and a woman, or was it, God? Lyrics Speak to Me Author/Composer James Kevin O'Connor Speak to me, if only with the beating, of your heart, Hey walk with me, can you feel the lines of demarcation, melt apart? I Cherish every single color, in your silhouette, your presence, and your inner voice would always cut right through, all the noise, all the noise. Speak to me, I'll share with you the tools of my experience, I acquired them through the language of uncertainty, and I've learned that simple silence, holds the key, enlighten me, enlighten me... Bridge I will protect you from the avalanche of pain, he's just an old familiar visitor, from past campaigns, from past campaigns... Break Speak to me with a silent gesture, with innocence and honesty, a warm look in your eyes, a gentle touch, your shared energy with me, and although you never made a sound, you now know how, to speak to me, you speak to me... Today's topic is all about something that is near and dear to YGTMama, as we here have always had a philanthropic heart. It was by way of divine intervention, coincidence, fate, whatever you'd like to call it, that these amazing guests we have today were brought into our community. We have the incredible women from Mamas for Mamas here to share their mission and movement! Shannon Christensen is the founder and Executive Director for Mamas For Mamas. Which is a Canadian award-winning charitable organization that supports mothers in crisis, and provides ongoing support to low-income Mamas and their kids. The mission is to change the landscape of poverty through innovative approaches to financial barriers faced by struggling families. Shannon holds a masters degree in psychology and started her career as a trauma counselor for women, children, and men dealing with trauma and the effects of abuse. Her passion for helping people overcome hardship is reflected in her tireless work to give a voice to those who have been silenced. It's a movement, not a moment. Koa Hughes was born and raised in the Okanagan, where she still resides with her Spouse (Duffy) and 2 children. With a B.A in Psychology and Indigenous Studies, Koa did not expect to end up in the Construction industry; however, Koa is now the COO of the Award Winning Home Building Company, alongside her business partner/spouse, Duffy. Koa has been featured in Mint Magazine for People to Watch 2018, her company has won many awards within B.C, including Business of the Year, and this winter you will see Koa on Network Television, in a Documentary about the life of Entrepreneurs. Before meeting her Duffy, Koa was a single mom, and needed the help of Mamas For Mamas on many occasions, just to get by. Koa has never forgotten about how much Mamas For Mamas helped her when she was in need and was committed to giving back when she was able. Now, Koa is the Sustainable Nourishment Coordinator at Mamas For Mamas. We are most excited to chat with our first ever celebrity guest Jillian Harris! The host of “Love it or List It Vancouver”, spokesperson for international brands, interior designer, and publisher of original lifestyle content, Jillian Harris is a quintessential busy-bee who pours her heart and soul into every endeavor. Jillian's signature blend of high-brow / low-brow style makes her relatable to both small-town and city gals alike. Her other happy place? Surrounded by family & friends at home in Kelowna with her fiancé Justin, son Leo, new daughter Annie, and their boxer pup Nacho Cilantro. Shannon shares that Mamas for Mamas was born out of her yearning to connect with other moms over something other than whether you bottle or breastfed. She felt that there was too much mom-shaming & drama going around. Her main mission at the beginning was not necessarily poverty driven but more connecting all moms from different socioeconomic backgrounds to donate, share and support with each other so that they could make the journey of motherhood more supportive and inclusive. She wanted more of the village that we seem to have lost along the way. She shares that one day she came across a post from a 19-year old pregnant mother of 2 who could not afford groceries. This pulled at her heartstrings so she took up a collection and went to buy her groceries. The feeling she got from doing this inspired her to start up a peer-to-peer Facebook group called Mamas for Mamas, which went from 300 to 3000 women very quickly. This was working for basic stuff, like re-distributing baby toys and clothes to other mamas in need, saving them from the landfill, and creating community; but what Shannon soon realized is that there were o...

Johnny and Kevin celebrate Fall and the return of network television by watching the pilot episode of the only hit NBC show, This Is Us. The two make fun of Jack being almost nude, 36 not being a late 30’s age, Alan Thicke’s cameo appearance, the doctor trying out his tight five stand up set on Jack and Rebecca, and Iran being on the TV to show it’s set in the 80s. Johnny and Kevin also discuss whether they would ever be interested in watching a network TV show again. Da dada da da dada da, da dada da da dada da!
S.U. Week of Sept. 10th - Sept. 17thWhy I hate participating in charity golf tournaments. I'm not going to win the Westgate football contest if I keep getting screwed out of wins like I did Sunday. Netflix content blows away regular network television. Even though CBS CEO, Les Moonves, was wrong in accosting women in the work place, Julie Chen (wife) is at least partially culpable. It amazes me how many people are boycotting Nike instead of buying their stock. People buy people first, product second and companies last. Lamont is still favored to be next governor despite Malloy being recognized as the worst current governor in the United States.
In this episode of Funny Business, Corey, Kevin, Shawn and Matt discuss what they've been watching and listening to recently and then go over a slew of news stories revolving around Netflix, Hulu and the streaming world that we all live in. Then they all discuss the Fall network television lineup and review the trailers they watched beforehand before a brief discussion on how early is too early for Fall/Halloween decorations. As always, they wrap things with a list of all the biggest releases coming within the next thirty days.
At age 11 Maria Sansone quickly earned the title, "The Youngest Reporter in the History of Network Television" and soon found herself interviewing sports legends like Michael Jordan when most kids her age had yet to hit puberty. Her meteoric rise put some strain on her adolescent years, causing her to leave the business through High School. But junior year of college, she won a Nation-wide search to guest host with Regis Philbin on Live with Regis and Kelly and her career was reignited, eventually leading to a long-standing gig co-hosting the popular morning news show, Good Day LA. But nothing is without hiccups, so Maria's eventual shift into motherhood led to her search to build a business that supports her top priorities. She leaves tons of clues for the rest of us on how she's begun to build a successful brand on social media. SHOW NOTES: Being discovered at 11 years old, (2:55). Otto Santa Anna presents findings from his forthcoming book, Juan in a Hundred: Faces and Stories of Latinos on the Network News (Texas). In it he elaborates standard cognitive metaphor analysis (as is used for printed texts), blending cognitive science with humanist scholarship, to attempt to capture the full semiotic range of televised reporting. His review of a full year of contemporary network news stories about Latinos reveals both the high production values and journalistic limitations of network reporting. This critical semiotic analysis offers an explanation about how news viewers construct partial understandings about Latinos from the news stories they watch. At the end of this talk he offers a range of recommendations, from modest to radical, to address these limitations. Otto Santa Ana, UCLA Associate Professor, received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from University of Pennsylvania. Santa Ana’s scholarship has focused on language that constructs social hierarchies, particularly how the mass media reinforce unjust inequity in their representations of Latinos. His first book, Brown Tide Rising (2002) offered a close study of newspapers. The American Political Science Association named it Book of the Year on Ethnic and Racial Political Ideology. Santa Ana has now extended his research to multi-modal mass media. His forthcoming book, Juan in a Hundred: The Faces and Stories of Latinos on the Evening News, (University of Texas Press) analyzes a year of network news imaging of Latinos. He maps out an explicit procedure by which news consumers build their understandings out of the multimodal stimuli of television news stories using recent cognitive science scholarship (Lakoff, Fauconnier) as well as humanist theories (Foucault, Calvin McGee, Barthes, Hadyen White) to explain how news viewers construct their skewed understandings about Latinos from the news stories they watch. Throughout the book, Santa Ana offers explicit suggestions to television news professionals.
