The process of recognizing the New Testament canon took some time. When it was originally written, the New Testament was not one compiled literary work but rather 27 different writings that circulated around the early church. As the church expanded, began dealing with false teachers and doctrines, and came under intense persecution, it became necessary to spell out the recognized limits of the New Testament canon. In the process, some books like Hebrews, James, or Revelation were disputed for a time but eventually recognized as canonical. Additionally, fraudulent books began to be written, claiming to be from one of the apostles or close associates of Jesus. Dan Brown popularized the idea in the DaVinci code that all of these writings had equal weight with the rest of the New Testament writings we have today, and that at the Council of Nicea in the 4th century, the church picked the books they liked and discarded the ones they didn't. David and Nathan discuss all the disputes and dispel the myths surrounding the New Testament in this episode.
It is so comforting that God cares for the next generation, and they are in His mighty hands. Even when we fail, God is faithful to His covenant promises. But that doesn't mean we don't have a lot of work to do. Judges 2:10 recounts a sad story when "there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel." How could this happen? How could they forget about creation, Adam and Eve, Abraham, and the Exodus event? But it did happen. As yearly statistics warn of the religious decline in the next generation, Judges 2:10 becomes a stark warning. In this episode, Pastor Brandon discusses how to equip the next generation. In this episode, Michael Kruger walks through his own wrestling with the canon and why Christians can have confidence in the Bible they have today. Michael Kruger is the president and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a leading scholar on the origins and development of the New Testament canon. He is also the author of 'Canon Revisited: Establishing the Origins and Authority of the New Testament Books'. Read the full transcript of this episode. In our last episode in this series, we considered the canon of the Old Testament, how it was formed and why Protestants reject the books of the Apocrypha. In this episode, we consider questions such as: Why did Christians add the books of the New Testament to the collection of Old Testament Scriptures? Was this the product of later development? How did the Church recognize what books were Scripture and what books weren't? Is the Bible missing any books today? What if we found a lost letter of Paul today - would we add it to the Bible? And what about Roman Catholic Tradition? In this second of a two-part conversation on how to teach the Book of Romans, Michael J. Kruger, president and professor of New Testament and early Christianity at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS), Charlotte, shares some of what he's learned over the past two years through teaching Romans to a women's Bible study. Kruger works his way from Romans 8–16, explaining how to do justice to the majestic themes in chapter 8, why Paul presents election not as a problem but as the solution to a greater problem, and how Paul guides us through the complexities of the Christian life in chapters 12–15.In addition to his duties at RTS, Kruger served (at the time of recording) as an associate pastor of Uptown Church in Charlotte. He blogs at Canon Fodder on the origins of the New Testament canon and other biblical and theological issues. Kruger is editor and contributor to A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament and author of both Canon Revisited: Establishing the Origins and Authority of the New Testament Books and also The Heresy of Orthodoxy: How Contemporary Culture's Fascination with Diversity has Reshaped Our Understanding of Early Christianity, co-authored with Andreas Köstenberger. On Romans, Kruger recommends:Romans (The Crossway Classic Commentaries) by Charles HodgeThe Epistle to the Romans (The New International Commentary on the New Testament) by John MurrayThe Epistle to the Romans (The New International Commentary on the New Testament) by Douglas MooRomans International Critical Commentary (two-volume set) by C. What happens when New Testament manuscripts disagree? For example, should John 7:53-8:11 and Mark 16:9-20 be considered "Scripture"? Should Mark 9:29 say, "prayer and fasting" or just "prayer"? What do we do when some manuscripts of the New Testament have one reading, and other manuscripts have a different reading? How do scholars determine which was the original reading? Though 21st-century believers didn't see Christ in the flesh, some have had personal encounters with Him. Brother Paul didn't meet Christ in the flesh too. Yet, he walked faithfully with God. He had such zeal that God used him to write nearly half of the New Testament Books. The broadcast exhorts believers to walk as Paul walked with God. They should have Paul's type of zeal. And they should contend for the gospel once for all delivered to the saints just like Brother Paul. ——— Are you aware that you can watch more than 100 videos (videos you can share, use in Sunday schools, teach others, and evangelize) in high definition on our YouTube channel? One Old Testament verse that took three New Testament Books to explain
In this episode, Martin Tanner discusses how the earliest known writing, which is inside ancient Egyptian Temples, date to nearly 4,000 BC, and are written in Egyptian Hieroglyphics. "Hieroglyphics" means "words from God." The Egyptians believed God gave them writing and language. A similar idea is found in the Book of Moses 6:5-6. Martin Tanner also talks about the earliest known Bible verse, the order the New Testament Books were written and related topics. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We talk about scripture being God's truth a lot. We let the New Testament guide us in how we think, act, and pray…but why are the books in the New Testament THE books for us to follow and take as truth? Using Michael J Kruger's book, Canon Revisited: Establishing the Origins and Authority of the New Testament Books, we explore why we should have confidence that the 27 books in our New Testament are truth from God.
During episode #3 (Part 2) of the Faith Recalibration Podcast, Laviniu and Daniel discuss why we should believe in the New Testament as well as the canonization and how the books were chosen to be a part of the New Testament.
In which we discuss Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Hebrews (with a discussion on the priesthood), 1 Thessalonians, 1 Peter, and 1 John.
