After a weekend day in the high alpine, where puffies, a biting wind, and turning leaves teased of winter, we're more in tune with the season—which is ski film season. The socials are beginning to buzz with the sending as production houses ramp up the visual and auditory volume. Now. Is. The. Time. To. Get. Stoked. With that in mind, we took a small detour to visit one of the best in the climbing/adventure film business, Nick Rosen of the Reel Rock Tour and Sender Films. Rosen and his colleagues reliably shoot, edit, and produce often tense, funny, and heavy films with crisp storytelling and vertigo-inducing visuals. If you are intrigued and new to the Sender Films' catalog, "The Alpinist," an Emmy Award winning film, is a beautiful place to begin your journey. On this podcast, you'll find a few F-bombs and such. Really, there are far fewer F-bombs than on our skintrack banter sessions, where we discussed the spectrum of adventure films and why this podcast host should not be such a crank regarding modern stoke-focused ski films. Point taken.Rosen knows his craft and practices it like a master. The end product of Reel Rock's and Sender's efforts—their fine human-centered films—are gifts to the rest of us. This is to say that Rosen and the host discuss ski films in the context of the broader adventure film realm. Learn more about Nick and Sender Films here, and find the catalog of Reel Rock films here. You can find us at the-high-route.com. Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. For weight weenies, hyphens weigh next to nothing. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. And if you think you've spotted a UFO in the past or visited the 7th dimension, "Beautiful Alien" is a good tune to start with.
Nick Rosen and Peter Mortimer make climbing films. It's their world and expertise. And when they heard about Marc-Andre Leclerc, the Canadian free-spirited 23-year-old free soloist who was making some of the boldest ascents in history, they knew they had to track him down. Nomadic and publicity shy, he doesn't own a phone or car, and is reluctant to let a film crew in on his pure vision of climbing. Thus began the journey to create THE ALPINIST, a fascinating, beautiful, and thrillingly filmed investigation into a life spent defying danger. In their conversation with Tiller, Nick and Peter talk about building their relationship with the elusive Marc-Andre (2:15), capturing the purity of Marc's spirit (7:18), the incredible discipline of alpine soloing (13:15), the process of writing such a kinetic film (17:55), mountaineering cinematography (23:40), and what it means to live a life well lived (31:40).

In this episode I speak with Nick Rosen, also known as Sloane. We discussed a variety of mental health topics but put a big focus around Depression and Managing Expectations. We thought this would be a great episode to kick off with and evaluate our own personal battles with depression. Nick was very open about his recent struggles with his mental health, including detailing a time when he was contemplating suicide and called the Suicide Prevention Hotline. Some of this conversation may be triggering to those battling their mental health so please keep that in mind. We are not licensed mental health professionals, councilors, or therapists. We speak only from our own personal experiences and perspectives.Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in people ages 10-34. Let that sink in… at 10 years old we are losing today's youth to suicide. 46% of people that die by suicide have a diagnosed mental health condition, and 90% of people who die by suicide have experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. The LBGTQ youth community are 4x more likely to attempt suicide than straight youth. Transgender people are 12 times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. Lastly 78% of all people who die by suicide are male. You may not know who Peter Mortimer is, and that's fine by him. You're almost certainly intimate with is filmography, however, an ever-evolving array of groundbreaking films three decades in the making. Peter and his partners Josh Lowell and Nick Rosen (among many others) have collaborated to define the climbing film medium. They have literally delivered more climbing psych than any other humans on the planet. Peter, and his newly minted company Sender Films, launched his career with quirky turn-of-the-century features such as "Scary Faces," "Front Range Freaks," and "Return 2 Sender." Although the films sold out theaters, "King Lines," "Progression," and the "First Ascent" series truly put Sender on the map. Noting the insatiable hunger for new footage and a theater experience, Peter and Josh joined forces to launch the Reel Rock Film Tour. The crew booked around 50 shows that first year. Reel Rock 14 will log 600+ in 2019, spanning the globe. Somehow, amidst the chaos of building a global film tour, Peter found time to direct, produce, and occasionally helm the camera for "Valley Uprising" and "Dawn Wall," films years in the making. His highly anticipated feature following the career of Marc-Andre Leclerc inches toward the finish line, currently in post-production. It's difficult to overstate the influence and impact Peter's films have had on the climbing world. Where we once devoured DVDs of straight climbing porn (I mean, we still do), Sender's movies have raised the bar in unimaginable ways, allowing global tours, Netflix features, and paving the way to mainstream success (and, you know, the random Oscar for his friend Jimmy Chin). We're so grateful we could sneak into Sender HQ for a quick chat. If you haven't seen Reel Rock 14 yet, grab tickets right now. The films are as strong as any lineup in the 14 year history of the tour. Have a question, feedback, suggestion, or pitch? Launch a missive at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com or DM us at @thethundercling on Instagram. We read and respond to every note. And cheers to Ryne Doughty for the great tunes. Reel Rock in Denver actually booked him to perform before each of the four showings at the Oriental Theater! He put on a helluva show. Happy Turkey Day, you heathens!

Although Nick Rosen isn't quite sure how much he remembers of his earliest years of life as the son of "Back to the Land" hippies on a rural commune style farm in Quebec, there is no doubt that some of their radical ideas and behavior rubbed off on him and helped shaped the idealistic foundation that would have Nick traveling the world looking for a revolution of his own. Nick tells us about living with the Zapatistas in Mexico, about seeing the world trade center go down from the apartment he was living in, about sailing with friends and rock climbing in different areas around the world, and about finally re-uniting with his long time friend Pete Mortimer to help build what would become Sender Films. After years of writing, Nick would become a very integral part of the storytelling side of things of a film company that was quickly earning respect. Nick helped to craft character development and story arcs as they documented the climbing world around them, which you can see a great example of in their more recent and acclaimed film "Valley Uprising" that explores the history of rock climbing in the Yosemite Valley through a host of characters both past and present. Dropping Off The Grid: A Growing Movement In AmericaNow is your chance to flee society. Drop off the grid. Pull a Thoreau. Be you a survivalist, an environmentalist or a cheapskate-ist, you can join the growing movement of Americans embracing off-grid living."There's a desire to step out of the rat race, and in America, that goes very deep in the national psyche," says Nick Rosen, author of "Off the Grid: Inside the Movement for More Space, Less Government, and True Independence in Modern America" and editor of www.off-grid.net. "You know, the pioneering spirit and sturdy self-reliance -- these things which define the American character."For some off-griders, it's a matter of having little or no impact on the environment -- literally living off the power grid. This lifestyle has been championed by celebrities Daryl Hannah and Ed Begley Jr. Then there are those who no longer want to be a blip on the societal radar."Off-grid living is a spectrum that unites greens and survivalists," says Rosen, referring to those who choose to escape city life because they either don't trust the government or don't want it meddling in their affairs.Whether you’re a Civil libertarian or just want to be private, you can relax and worry less about the intrusive State with its Big Brother databases, at least in the UK. Civil servants running the new systems are so incompetent (e.g. the Ministry of Defence stolen laptop) that the biggest fear is them losing your data. But private industry is another matter. From Facebook to Microsoft, They are watching You. Now the US Senate is considering a “do not track” command that could be issued by individual internet users. The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee held a hearing Wednesday to debate what – if any – privacy protections Internet users should be given. Most of the senators on hand agreed that consumers know little about who or what is tracking their browsing behavior. The UK government is burning $500m a year to build a national ID database that will duplicate the passport system and only cover those of us law abiding enough to register under our real names. Corporate databases will create their own parallel versions, or license government data for their own security checks. But you can take a few steps to protect your privacy. Follow these simple tips, and Big Brother will be no bother:1. How to Get an Anonymous CellphoneGo to a town you have never visited before, to an area with no CCTV cameras and pay a homeless person to buy a pay-as-you-go mobile phone for you. That way no shop will have your image on its CCTV. You will also have an anonymous mobile. In order to keep your anonymity, top it up in a shop with no CCTV outside. Or dispense with the phone altogether and return to the humble payphone, now the preserve of tourists and the super-poor.Even if you stick to your traceable phone, leave it switched off whenever possible to avoid having your movements tracked. Many phones are still traceable, so you need to take the battery out to be certain. If you have a Bluetooth phone, keep the service switched off because this is now being tested for advertising and other marketing activities.2. Hide Your EmailIf you use one of the free, web-based services like Gmail, your communications are being stored to build up a picture of your interests. Instead, you can use a service called Hushmail to send encrypted emails. Or work out a private code with friends you want to communicate with. You do not need an email address of your own. One hacker I spoke to sends emails from cybercafes via The Observer website, using the service which allows anyone to send any article to a friend. He embeds his message into the covering note which goes with the article.Others with their own computer use the free XeroBank browser (in preference to Explorer or Firefox), which includes several privacy-enhancing add-ons and sends all data through a network ‘cloud’ which hides most of the data you normally give away as you use a computer, but at the cost of reduced speed.3. Protect Your Computer FilesThere is sophisticated software that deletes all traces of your activities from your computer. Assuming you don’t have access to this, it is still worth remembering the data about you contained inside each file. Many digital photos, for example, contain within them the serial number of the camera that took them. Word documents contain the name of the author as well as traces of previous drafts.4. Stay Off Spam Mailing ListsEach time you submit your email address to register for a new website, create a special address, either on a free webmail service or on your own email server so you have control over it. Then, if the company later sells your email address or loses it through poor security, you will know exactly who to blame. And you will be able to close the account or block all email to that particular address. Again, Hushmail is useful for this. You can set it up to create these aliases for you.5. Stop Supermarkets Snooping on Your ShoppingSwap your supermarket loyalty card with a friend or acquaintance every few months, after having cashed in any points you have accumulated (treat Oyster and other local transport cards the same way). You lose no benefits and it prevents tracking of specific purchasing patterns (or journeys) tied to your name and address. Use cash more often – save your credit card for emergencies.6. Mess Up Utility Companies’ Marketing PlansLive off-grid, unplugged from the system with solar panels and rainwater harvesting. There are thousands of people living without mains power, water or sewerage, all over the UK and the US, in isolated cottages, behind hedgerows in caravans or in groups of yurts in country fields. And this is not just a movement for tree huggers and climate campers. Many live on boats in towns and cities, and if you live in a flat or house, you can still unplug.Get a laptop with wireless capability. There are plenty of hot spots where you can check your email or browse for free.Thunderbird Mail transfer agent is available free from the same folks that brought you Firefox. The Enigmail plug-in allows encrypted email and file transfer with up to a 4096 bit key. I’ve tested it with Windows, Mac and UNIX for interoperability. Combined with a Gmail account that be configured for TLS (Similar to HTTPS) connections, it makes for a fairly secure package and it’s all free. It won’t stop NSA from reading your mail but will for most everyone else. How does one just disappear off the face of the earth? Is it as simple as moving away to another country? First you have to understand who you are running from. If you are running from an abusive partner, know that they have limited resources and might have a problem if you move out of state or out of the country. If you are running from the FBI for example, understand that these people have unlimited resources and will do everything in your power to hunt you down even if you move to another country. Before going underground, you have to do a few things in order to throw your opposition away from your trail. You have to destroy the "old" you and build a new you. Destroy all photographs you can get possession of. Some of your friends or relatives might be hesitant to give you their photographs but let them understand that the people chasing you might go after them, too, because of their connection to you. They will threaten your loved ones with physical or other forms of abuse if they refuse to hand over photographs. If it is not possible; destroy all the most recent pictures of yourself and leave the old ones. Of course you don't want your face plastered all over the state but if it is an artist's rendition or just an old photo, chances are high that people won't recognize you.Destroy or throw away all your credit cards and ATM cards. Government authorities can pinpoint your location within seconds if you use your magnetic cards. Before going underground, be sure to withdraw all your money from the bank and max out all your credit cards with the things you'll need or you can resell for cash. Do not bring your car with you. That will be the first thing that the opposition will look for. Leave your car in place where car thieves will be and let them strip your car clean to remove any trace of it. If you need transportation, there are a lot of places where you can simply give money and get a new car without any identification required. Just make sure you aren't buying a stolen car or the car itself doesn't violate any safety rules. The last thing you want as you are making your escape is to be pulled over for a simple safety violation.if (WIDGETBOX) WIDGETBOX.renderWidget('66f56d16-759e-496f-bc83-6083e68c5e3d');Get the Surveillance and Security Video Library widget and many other great free widgets at Widgetbox! An interview with Sender Films producers Nick Rosen and Peter Mortimer I just got back from the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Held every year in November at the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada this celebration of alpine culture marks the end of one adventure season and the beginning of the next. After putting in time at the MountainFilm Festival Telluride and few other events throughout the year I've had the chance to see a lot of movies about athletes and explorers pushing the boundaries of the human experience. But one film in particular hits really close home. Called Point of No Return this movie for television produced by Sender Films depicts of lives of guys I once knew who died tragically in the pursuit of a dream. Jonny Copp Micah Dash Wade Johnson Climbers Jonny Copp and Micah Dash with cameraman Wade Johnson were killed in the making of this film. While making their retreat from a failed attempt to climb Mount Edgar in western China, a devastating avalanche swept through the region to claim their lives. With footage recovered with their bodies the movie Point of No Return is a tribute to three men who paid the ultimate price to follow their passion for adventure. I had the opportunity to talk to producers Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen to discuss both the risks and the consequences of a lifestyle that is often fraught with danger. Is it worth it living life on the edge? Point of No Return - First Ascent from Mountainfilm in Telluride on Vimeo. The film Point of No Return is part of the First Ascent Series produced by Sender Films in Cooperation with National Geographic.
