On April 26, 1986, the Soviet Union's Chornobyl Power Complex nuclear reactor 4 exploded, releasing a massive amount of highly radioactive material. People living near the power plant were forced to evacuate, and the area was deemed uninhabitable. But today, many animals — some the descendants of pets left behind — have made this region their home. In this episode, we chat with researchers who have spent a lot of time in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone studying the animals that live there, trying to understand how constant low levels of radiation impact their health. What they're learning could inform plans to repopulate areas that suffered past nuclear disasters, including Fukushima, and help with the development of methods that protect astronauts from radioactivity in space. A sobering discussion with a film producer about the RADIOACTIVE: THE WOMEN OF THREE MILE ISLAND which is a stunning award-winning film. It asks the important question: should we or shouldn't we with nuclear energy? First-time filmmaker Heidi Hutner answers this question with solid research and interviews with scientists, engineers, whistleblowers, physicians, and most importantly with the victims themselves. RADIOACTIVE is a must-see tour-de-force for anyone who cares about our energy future and our planet, says JON BOWERMASTER, AWARD-WINNING NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC FILMMAKER. COBB LIFE for January 28th Publish Date: January 25th INTRODUCTION From the Drake Realty Studio, welcome to 'Cobb Life,' proudly sponsored by the Marietta Daily Journal. I'm your host, Keith Ippolito, representing the BG Ad Group. A special thanks to our show's sponsor, Credit Union of Georgia, for their unwavering support. Today's episode is a twofer. Firstly, I had the chance to chat with Robby Heisner, the influential producer and writer for the band, Atomic Freak. Following that, I had a fascinating chat with Joshua Trower, the Education Program Coordinator at The Southern Museum of Civil and Locomotive History. Robby's life story is a compelling mix of diverse talents, challenges, and an unwavering spirit of resilience and creativity. Beginning his career as a magician, Robby mesmerized audiences with his illusions and levitations. He then transitioned into the music scene with his band, The KOPPS, known for their unique police-themed approach. Despite dealing with muscular dystrophy, Robby formed the Van Gogh band, undertaking an extraordinary journey that saw him perform at events around the country and collaborate on projects for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. After stepping away from music for some time, Robby is back with his new band, Atomic Freak. Their debut album, "NUCLEAR MELTDOWN," is a fiery blend of heavy guitar-based rock 'n' roll that pays tribute to the golden era of hard rock, fortified with a fresh, enigmatic energy. The mysterious origins of Atomic Freak have intrigued fans and critics alike, sparking curiosity and speculation. Following my dialogue with Robby, Joshua will join me to discuss one of the largest model railroading events in the southeast. With over 20 different model railroads from three states, Joshua also gives us a sneak peek into the museum's history and the renowned Great Locomotive Chase. So, let's settle in, take a moment to unwind—it's Sunday after all—and journey with us as we explore the heart and soul of 'Cobb Life.' Welcome to 'Cobb Life.' We also thank Joshua Trower from the Southern Museum of Locomotive History for his time. As we sign off, stay tuned for more episodes of 'Cobb Life.' Early in the morning of March 28th, 1979, equipment failures and a stuck open relief valve prevented the removal of heat from Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear reactor's core - an essential function that prevents reactor damage. And within hours, it seemed like things were on the brink of a catastrophic nuclear crisis. In the end, a true crisis would be averted... kind of. While the reactor's partial meltdown did NOT kill anyone... the media coverage of it DID nearly kill America's nuclear energy industry. Was that reaction justified? Now they we understand what really happened, should we now pick up where we left off with nuclear plant production in the 1970s? Want to apply for the Cummins Family Scholarship fund? The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine is Europe's largest. In March, Russian forces captured the plant and a crew of Ukrainians are maintaining operations at the plant -- effectively at gun point. In recent weeks, fighting around the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power plant has intensified, causing some damage to the plant and raising the prospect that in the context of armed conflict a catastrophic nuclear accident becomes a very real possibility. In this episode, we are joined by Jon Wolfstol, senior advisor at Global Zero and a member of board of Science and Security at Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. We kick off by discussing how Zaporizhia operates in normal circumstances and how the fighting may have impacted current plant operations. We then discuss what a catastrophic event at the power plant may look like. This includes the global impact of a nuclear meltdown at Zaporizhia.

It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began way back in the year 1900. This 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku was a magnitude 9.0–9.1 undersea "mega-thrust" earthquake, meaning simply that this is a powerful quake that happens at a very precarious spot on the planet's crust; subduction zones at destructive convergent plate boundaries. And it took down a nuclear reactor plant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Overnight we had a potential nuclear disaster going on in Ukraine. The markets will open down significantly, but how am I playing this market? I go over my thoughts on what to do today, particular stocks you want to trade and the earnings plays of Marvel ($MRVL), Costco ($COST) and Broadcom ($AVGO). I also discuss my thoughts on Apple ($AAPL) and why some traders yesterday thought it's got to pull back even more. If I day trade today, it's going to be $UVXY and $UCO. I wouldn't even mind holding $UCO over the weekend as oil is just going to continue going up IMO. Have a great weekend. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dailystockpick/support

It was a day when Earth stood still in horror watching the events of a massive earthquake that was followed by an even more devastating tsunami. One that put the whole of the planet on red alert. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began way back in the year 1900….and it happened this day in weather history. March 2021 marks ten years since an earthquake off Japan’s Pacific Coast and the tsunami it caused led to reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to melt down, releasing radiation and forcing the government to evacuate over 100,000 residents in surrounding areas. As the author of a new book from the Brookings Institution Press writes, failures at all levels of Japan’s government and private sector worsened the human and economic impact of the disaster and ensured that its consequences would endure for years to come. On this episode of the Brookings Cafeteria, Brookings Press Director Bill Finan interviews Yoichi Funabashi, author of “Meltdown: Inside the Fukushima Nuclear Crisis.” Funabashi, an award-winning Japanese journalist, columnist, and author, and now chairman of Asia Pacific Initiative, interviewed more than 300 government officials, power plant operators, and military personnel to provide a meticulous recounting and analysis of the struggle at all levels to contain the disaster. Also on this episode, Senior Fellow Sarah Binder explains what’s been happening in Congress in the eight weeks since the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. She examines how Congress is working so fast, what unified party control means for Democrats, and asks, will it last? The nuclear disaster in Fukushima in Japan happened almost nine years ago. An earthquake triggered a tsunami that led to the meltdown of three nuclear reactors. Fukushima is soon running out of space to store radioactive water. DW's Tim Schauenberg talks about plans how to discharge that water and what else is lurking at the bottom of the sea.

The Nuclear Meltdown: Chernobyl - In Episode #17: Broken Buildings Expert, Dimitri Livas explores Chernobyl – a name commonly associated with perhaps the biggest nuclear disaster of all time. The Chernobyl power reactor exploded on April 26th, 1986. This catastrophic explosion caused so much devastation, that the true death toll from long-term effects of radiation exposure is yet to be realised. This horrific and tragic event forever changed how the world viewed nuclear power. #FixingBrokenBuildings #CreatingHealthyBuildings #BuildingBetterBridges #WeDoStrata
On this episode of Community News we discuss Salsa night at the the Hi Ho, Sasha attends back to school night and we contemplate how long we really have if the local nuclear reactor blows up.

From the very first line of dialogue, Craig Mazin makes clear that “Chernobyl” is far more than a dramatization of the 1986 nuclear meltdown in the USSR.Mazin, the creator and writer of the HBO miniseries, tells a story of the “cost of lies” and the real-life dangers that result from a culture disconnected from the truth. The Soviet system was built on propaganda and misinformation, and the heroes of the nuclear disaster are the people who sought the truth and stuck to the facts — even at great personal cost.As he developed the story in 2016, Mazin saw parallels in American politics, with whole segments of the public growing untethered from the truth. The five-part series resonated with viewers, and has drawn the largest audience for an HBO miniseries since “Band of Brothers.” It's been nominated for 19 Emmys.Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus) talks with Mazin (@clmazin) about how the medium of episodic television gave him the space to tell a mystery — as well as a story of a culture, a system of government, and the nature of love.

After ending the last one on a middling note, Dan and Avi are back with a new season of Power Rangers! Clearly big changes are afoot as the show has a slightly different name. That's not even the only thing that's different as some rangers get different colored uniforms. One of our main cast even hangs up the spandex, possibly never yelling "It's morphin' time!" again. How would you handle a situation where a baby has been kidnapped by monsters? Let us know @fromalpha2zedd
Sara Barczak, High Risk Energy Director, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy As program director for high risk energy choices, Sara provides extensive outreach and support to concerned citizens, organizing partners, the media, and decision-makers and participates in legislative, state and federal regulatory forums on issues concerning nuclear energy, public safety, utilities and the impacts of power plants and our energy infrastructure on the region’s water resources. She participated in a U.S./Russian exchange with non-governmental organizations in Russia impacted by plutonium bomb fuel (MOX) programs, including travel to Russia. Sara has worked for nearly twenty years in diverse environmental fields in the private and non-profit sectors: as an environmental contractor for Department of Defense facilities relating to hazardous waste and air quality issues and as a citizen’s advocate, educator and consultant for three non-profit organizations. Sara received a B.A. in Biology from Lawrence University.
Five years after an earthquake and tsunami led to a nuclear reactor meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, TEPCO has admitted covering up the meltdown. But it appears that was on orders of the Japanese government. Also: Rolling blackouts predicted for California this summer; first Palestinian soldiers enter Syrian war; US and Russian warplanes come close to clash over Syria; Israel and Turkey to normalize relations; Israel's Labor Party leader made secret deal to turn over West Bank to Palestinians; Tomb of Jesus to be repaired; 'Gateway to Hell' volcano ready to blow; and Google Earth reveals that somebody released the kraken.
In this episode, we look at Germany's nuclear energy future. In 2011, Angela Merkel announced a plan to shut down all atomic power plants - making Germany the only country in the world to do so. But is this a populist policy brought about by hysteria and misinformation? And can green power really provide a viable alternative? Also on the show, a bloody stabbing on a train in Bavaria sparks worries over terrorist attacks on German soil. Just weeks later, a supposed plot to attack Dusseldorf with machine guns and explosives is uncovered. In our travel segment, we take a look at Cologne's magnificent cathedral.
