While small caps lagged the rest of the markets saw mostly green shoots to close the trading session. One of the biggest laggards, Palantir (PLTR), sold off near the end of the day after the Washington Post reported Pentagon budget cuts from the Trump Administration. Arista Networks (ANET) became an A.I. laggard despite it and Analog Devices (ADI) posting strong earnings. Gas companies like Devon Energy (DVN) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) got a boost from their reports. My Climate Journey
A Conversation with Oxy CEO, Vicki Hollub

My Climate Journey

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2024 63:28

*This My Climate Journey podcast episode was recorded in front of a live audience at the Ion during Houston Energy and Climate Startup Week. Our guest is, Vicki Hollub, CEO of Occidental Petroleum (Oxy), a century-old oil and gas company employing over 12,000 people globally with a market cap near $50 billion. Recently the company has made significant investments into what they refer to as “carbon management” technologies including the acquisition of Carbon Engineering, a Direct Air Capture (DAC) company, in 2023 for $1.1 billion. Oxy is commercializing Carbon Engineering's technology through its 1PointFive initiative and aims to deploy 70 DAC facilities by 2035. These efforts include recently receiving draft permits from the EPA for Class VI Injection wells, enabling the permanent geologic sequestration of CO₂, an advance market commitment from Microsoft to purchase 500,000 metric tons of carbon removal, and an award from the US Department of Energy for up to $500M to build a 1M ton per year facility. The conversation covers a lot of territory. Vicki acknowledges climate change and its effects on extreme weather and natural ecosystems, while also stating that Oxy does not view the energy transition as a shift away from oil and gas. Instead, she describes a future where oil and gas exploration could become carbon-negative through advancements in enhanced oil recovery (EOR), a technology that uses CO₂ to extract fossil fuels from otherwise depleted wells. This is a notable interview for MCJ as Vicki is the first oil and gas CEO we've had on the show. We believe it's important to understand how a company like Oxy, which has a very large greenhouse gas emissions footprint, thinks about its future plans. We also know that many who listen to this show are interested in Oxy's DAC efforts and their perspective on the future of the technologies and markets around it. Vicki became CEO in 2016, the first woman to lead a major American oil company. We are grateful to Katie Mehnert of ALLY Energy for connecting us with her for this conversation. In this episode, we cover: [03:28] Navigating the trust gap between O&G companies and the public[06:42] Vicki's early career path[08:32] The O&G boom in the Permian Basin in the mid-2000s[11:18] Vicki's path to becoming the first female CEO at Oxy[17:15] Changing dynamics and priorities while running a complex company like Oxy[18:00] How Vicki pitched Warren Buffet to invest in Oxy and navigated the impacts[21:11] How Oxy attracts and retains talent, plus generational differences[26:36] Challenges and opportunities Oxy sees in the energy transition[30:45] Navigating urgency relative to long-term planning[34:01] How the transition of innovation and legacy businesses could play out[44:36] Oxy's focus on carbon management, including direct air capture[49:55] Challenges in scaling DAC, including partnerships and funding[53:46] Vicki's thoughts on achieving a net-zero carbon barrel of oil[59:44] Her perspectives on the future of the oil and gas industry and its evolutionEpisode recorded on Sept 11, 2024 (Published on Oct 1, 2024) Get connected with MCJ: Cody Simms X / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective / YouTube*If you liked this episode, please consider giving us a review! 1. All eyes will be on Fed Chairman Jay Powell as he gives his second day of testimony on Capitol Hill. Yesterday, his opening remarks sent the stock market plunging throughout the session. He stated that rates will go higher for longer and that was all the market needed to hear to begin a sharp sell-off. I'm not sure how the market will react today, but yesterday was ugly. The 2-year note yield ended above 5% and that is where the fed funds rate needs to catch up to. 2. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway $BRK.B bought another 5,801,791 shares of Occidental Petroleum $OXY. This is in addition to his current stake in the oil giant. I tweeted out earlier that it's funny that he isn't investing in windmills. 3. Gold (GLD) got crushed yesterday as the US Dollar Index surged. Today, the US Dollar is stalling a little and gold is upticking. I still believe the US DOllar has much more to go and gold could slump from here. Just remember, the war wild card is always a reason to look at gold. Thyat could be a catalyst for gold to pop early. 4. Silver also dumped out yesterday on the back of the stronger dollar. Today, silver is rebounding a little as it hit a major retrace level. I still think this will ultimately pull back further before it becomes a major buy again. 5. Bitcoin has lost some steam lately. Its still somewhat constructive on the daily chart, but if the pattern breaks down it could be cooked. Remember, the large time-frames are bearish.

Many stocks managed to hold and even rally after record and accelerating inflation data. It feels wrong to be bullish while the Fed is still tightening but it is double-wrong not to take long setups when they appear. And we saw some relatively constructive price action towards the end of last week. Some names stood out: SWAV, LNTH, CELH, CCRN, OPCH, LRN, VERU, etc. Keep in mind that none of those has reported earnings yet. One earnings report can end their enthusiasm overnight. This is exactly what happened with the stocks that were showing relative strength during the previous earnings window.Biotech has held the best during the more recent market volatility. XBI tested its 10-day EMA a couple of times and it bounced. The dips are getting bought in the sector. We continue to see constructive price action. The new earnings season has just begun. JP Morgan missed estimates sending most financials to new 52-week lows last Thursday only to see them bouncing strong back the next day. NFLX was last night and TSLA tomorrow alongside a bunch of financials. As always, the reaction to earnings will be a much better signal than actual numbers because it will reveal the current market sentiment. Prices move based on sentiment in a short-term perspective. The Oracle and OXY: "The World Has Changed"Last week, Berkshire Hathaway filed a Form 4 disclosing it purchased another 4.3 million shares of Occidental Petroleum (OXY) for ~$250 million. Berkshire now owns 179.7 million shares of OXY, in addition to the Series A Preferred Stock that it acquired through its 2019 agreement with the company (more on this in a moment). At Friday’s close of ~$59 per share, Berkshire’s stake in the common is now worth ~$10.5 billion (~19% of the company). This story started in May 2019, when Berkshire committed to a $10 billion investment in Occidental preferred stock, contingent upon the completion of its ~$38 billion takeover of Anadarko. (CEO Vicki Hollub in May 2019:)“The Berkshire deal was important to make… the timing was critical… Berkshire could do it in an hour and they could do it on public information… Given the timing that we had, there was no other choice.”)As part of the financing, Berkshire also received warrants; Berkshire has the option to purchase 83.9 million shares at an exercise price of $59.62 per share. (“The preferred stock accrues dividends at 8% per annum and is redeemable at the option of Occidental commencing in 2029 at a redemption price equal to 105% of the liquidation preference plus any accumulated and unpaid dividends, or is mandatorily redeemable under certain specified capital return events. Dividends on the preferred may be paid in cash or, at Occidental’s option, in shares of common stock. The warrants are exercisable in whole or in part until one year after the redemption of the preferred stock.”)When Buffett committed to the $10 billion back in May 2019, here’s what he told CNBC’s Becky Quick about how it came together (by the way, Buffett told Becky in this interview that he was willing to put up $20 billion if needed):“I got a call yesterday evening [on May 5th], which is the first time I’ve talked to Occidental since last Sunday [April 28th]. They told me they were going in this direction, which I like, but I had nothing to do with it. We committed $10 billion, and it had nothing to do with how they framed their offer, how much they offered, or anything else – all they knew was that would be sure that they could get $10 billion from us if they completed the deal with Anadarko.”The ”direction” Buffett referred to was Occidental’s ability to avoid a shareholder vote on its Anadarko bid by raising $10 billion from Berkshire. In (lightly) defending management’s actions, which was loudly questioned by investors like Carl Ichan in his letter to Shareholders here.“I would think if you owned Occidental, you’re bullish on oil over the years – and you’re probably bullish on the Permian Basin because they have such a significant portion of their assets there. So, the idea that they will use less stock and more cash as part of the deal… I would think, net, if I had been an OXY holder at the time, I probably would like that kind of a deal… It’s a bet on oil prices over the long-term more than anything else. It’s also a bet the Permian Basin is what it’s cracked up to be… If oil goes way up, you make a lot of money… You have to have a view on oil over time. Charlie and I have some views on that… We feel good about doing the financing.”(From an Oct 2021 EIA report: “The Permian Basin, which spans western Texas and eastern New Mexico, represents the most prolific hydrocarbon production region in the United States. They accounted for about 30% of U.S. crude oil production and 14% of U.S. natural gas production in 2020.”)After that comment, Becky asked Warren why he didn’t just go ahead and buy all of Anadarko if that’s how he felt; his response was noteworthy:“Well, that might have happened if Anadarko had come to us [directly], but we wouldn’t jump into some other deal that we heard about from somebody coming to us and seeking financing. We hope people come to us on businesses, but I had no idea this transaction was going to happen…”Three years later, in March 2022, it became apparent that Buffett’s interest in OXY went beyond the preferred and the warrants. As discussed in detail at the 2022 Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting (held on 05/03/2022) and disclosed in SEC filings, Berkshire started buying OXY common on February 28th, 2022 (it didn’t own a single share before that date). Over a three-week period, Buffett went on a major buying spree: he invested ~$7 billion to buy ~136.4 million shares of OXY (at an average price of ~$51 per share). The initial purchase timing is notable: on February 24th, just a few days before Buffett began buying OXY, Russia invaded Ukraine. Buffett didn’t specifically talk about these geopolitical developments during the shareholder meeting, but he did note that something changed his perception of the bet: “Somebody asked a very good question:"Why weren’t you doing anything on February 20th and why were you doing it, in the case of Occidental, on February 28th? It’s because things developed in a way, and in the case of Occidental specifically, they had an analyst presentation that I read over the weekend… It made nothing but sense, and I decided it would be a good place to put Berkshire’s money… Two weeks later we had 14% of the company… The world changed… We should be very happy that we can produce 11 million barrels a day in the U.S. rather than being able to produce none and having to find those 11 million barrels a day somewhere else in the world to keep the American industrial machine working.”If you're at all interested in why the team and Berkshire are using Oxy as their proxy for energy exposure, i highly recommend listening to the most recent BRK breakdown from colossus podcasts here.💸Reformed Millennials - Post of The Week"Is your business model broken? The S&P 500 will end the year around 4,150,"says Shana Sissel. "Warren Buffet is continuing to buy Occidental Petroleum (OXY) while Harold Hamm offers to take Continental Resources private in a $25B deal. There is volatility in the commodity market which leaves investors uncertain. Is a new $100 price level forming for crude oil? We are in a supply constraint that is not going to be alleviated by these prices. There is lack of capital in the energy space," says Cole Smead.

Here's the first titled, Following COP26? Look at These 3 Sustainable Investing Strategies and 40 Stock Picks. It's by Jack Denton writing in Barron's. Now please excuse my improper pronunciations of company names in these quotes from this article. Quote. “Interested in the renewables sector? Morgan Stanley says… Look at China Jushi (600176.China), Jiangsu Zhongtian Technologies (600522.China), Luoyang Glass (1108.H.K.), Engie (ENGI.France), Ørsted (ORSTED.Denmark), Siemens Energy (ENR.Germany), FirstEnergy (FE), and Sunrun (RUN). For energy storage… Ganfeng Lithium (1772.H.K.), Panasonic (6752.Japan), Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt (603799.China), and QuantumScape (QS) are worth checking out. Across hydrogen… Morgan Stanley identifies Beijing SinoHytec (688339.China), China Petroleum & Chemical (0386.H.K.), Johnson Matthey (JMAT.U.K.), NEL (NEL.Norway), Air Products (APD), Enbridge (ENB), and New Fortress Energy (NFE) among the potential winners. Attractive bets in sustainable alternative fuels… include major oil companies Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX), as well as HollyFrontier (HFC) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC). The developing field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage offers picks including: Bayer (BAYN.Germany), ConocoPhillips (COP), NextDecade (NEXT), and Occidental Petroleum (OXY). Opportunities in electric transportation and green mobility still abound… Familiar electric-vehicle stocks such as Tesla (TSLA), NIO (NIO), and Li Auto (LI) make Morgan Stanley's list, as do TPI Composites (TPIC), Schneider National (SNDR), Knight-Swift Transportation (KNX), FREYR (FREY), Fisker (FSR), and Alstom (ALO.France). Renovation and energy efficiency also offer options… NARI Technology (600406.China), SINOPEC Engineering Group (2386.H.K.), Covestro (1COV.Germany), and Rexel (RXL.France) are among the potential plays. Morgan Stanley's view is that there are also many stocks facing headwinds… from the trend of decarbonization, including sectors such as energy; power and utilities; cement; chemicals; coal; metals and mining; industrials; automobiles; airlines; and shipping.  In particular, it is bearish on stocks including Consolidated Edison (ED), Continental Resources (CLR), XCel Energy (XEL), Ford Motor (F), BMW (BMW.Germany), Nissan (7201.Japan), American Airlines (AAL), Deutsche Lufthansa (LHA.Germany), and Air France-KLM (AF.France), among others.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Great Stock and Fund Picks Post COP26 (2) Now, turning to infrastructure. Another favorite of ethical and sustainable investors, there's this article titled Infrastructure stocks on watch after bill passes Congress. Four under-the-hood ways to play it by Keris Lahiff. It appeared on cnbc.com. Here are some quotes. “‘'I think that the (PAVE infrastructure ETF) is a great way to gain exposure…' Ari Wald, head of technical analysis at Oppenheimer, says it has more room to run…Wald told CNBC's ‘Trading Nation' on Monday. ‘We're bullish on that industry because it is indeed reclaiming its leadership… It has also outperformed the S&P 500 this year, climbing more than 35%...' Wald highlights diversified motion and control parts manufacturer Parker-Hannifin as one stock at the top of his watch list… Shares have jumped this month, rising by 11%. The broad-based S&P 500, by comparison, is up just 1%. Nancy Tengler, chief investment officer at Laffer Tengler Investments… Prefers to play the group through individual stocks rather than the PAVE ETF. She picked out three names she believes have upside potential. ‘Xylem is a beneficiary of the $55 billion water spend that's been allocated in the bill,' she said in the same interview. ‘This is significant spending for water. The state appropriation bills are somewhere in the $2 [billion] to $2.5 billion range annually. This is $55 billion over five years.' ‘Then, for the highways portion of the bill, we like Jacobs Engineering. So think about the $40 billion that's being spent for bridges, that's going to benefit engineering and construction companies, and then Martin Marietta, which is obviously just the asphalt for the road,' said Tengler. Xylem, Jacobs and Martin Marietta Materials… this year all are up by at least 30%, while the S&P 500 has climbed 25%.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Great Stock and Fund Picks Post COP26 (3) Now for my second article on infrastructure. It's titled, 3 Stocks That Could Win Big Under Biden's Infrastructure Bill by Matthew DiLallo, Neha Chamaria, and Reuben Gregg Brewer. Here are quotes from the authors on their picks. “1. Reuben Gregg Brewer chooses Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE: CLF) Over the past couple of years Cleveland-Cliffs has turned itself from a steel industry supplier into an integrated steelmaker that also sells key competitors iron ore pellets and other steelmaking inputs… Cleveland-Cliffs could also be benefiting from increased demand for its steelmaking ingredients… It is, thus, heavily leveraged to the elevated steel demand likely to come from increased infrastructure spending… Cleveland-Cliffs' stock is the best-performing North American steel mill over the past year. However, thanks to the mergers used to create it, the steelmaker also has the most leverage, with a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.3 times, twice as high as the next competitor. 2. Matt DiLallo likes Xcel Energy (NASDAQ: XEL) The infrastructure package includes significant funding for the energy transition to cleaner alternatives… That aligns perfectly with Xcel Energy's investment plan. The utility has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is investing billions of dollars to achieve that bold goal.   In addition to investing heavily in renewable energy, Xcel Energy is spending billions of dollars on upgrading its transmission system. It's also building EV infrastructure, including installing charging stations in major transportation corridors and underserved communities… The company said it could invest up to $4 billion over the coming decade on hydrogen-related projects to blend that emissions-free fuel into its natural gas system… The company could tap into government-funded programs from the infrastructure bill to support its spending plans. That could enable it to achieve its decarbonization efforts while creating significant value for shareholders by growing its earnings and dividend.    3. Neha Chamaria recommends United Rentals (NYSE: URI) As federal spending on infrastructure picks up, so should demand for heavy machinery like the ones United Rentals rents out. In fact, the company is already witnessing higher demand even before federal spending kicks off… Growth of 22% in its third-quarter rental revenue encouraged United Rentals to upgrade its outlook… United Rentals looks well positioned to win as infrastructure spending in the U.S. gathers steam.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Great Stock and Fund Picks Post COP26 (4) Now, this is a new style ESG ETF, Article's title is VOTE: ESG Activism in an ETF. It's by Neena Mishra of Zacks. Quote. “In this episode of ETF Spotlight, I speak with Yasmin Dahya Bilger, head of ETFs at Engine No. 1, about activist investing through an ETF. The activist investment firm had sent shock waves through Corporate America in May when it targeted Exxon Mobil XOM and successfully placed three candidates on the board of directors. The Engine No. 1 Transform 500 ETF VOTE, which started trading in June, intends to encourage transformational changes in companies through shareholder activism. The fund invests in 500 of the largest US public companies and comes with an expense ratio of just 0.05%. VOTE is an excellent alternative to standard S&P 500 ETFs for ESG focused investors since they can get a similar financial performance while participating in efforts to bring transformational changes in portfolio companies. Microsoft MSFT, Apple AAPL and Alphabet GOOGL are the top holdings in the market cap weighted ETF, which has already gathered about $250 million in assets.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Great Stock and Fund Picks Post COP26 (5) Honorable Mentions These are ethical and sustainable investment recommendations worth reading about but I hadn't the space to review them in this podcast. 1. In today's show, the US government declared a state of emergency on Sunday after the largest fuel pipeline was hit by a ransomware cyber-attack. Futures contracts held steady at the start of the overnight session Sunday evening, suggesting that the major U.S. equity indexes could trade at or near records when regular trading opens in New York after the attack. The Colonial Pipeline carries 2.5 million barrels a day - 45% of the East Coast's supply of fuel. It was knocked offline by a cyber-criminal gang on Friday and is still working to restore service. The emergency status enables fuel to be transported by road. Fuel prices are likely to rise 2-3% on Monday, but the impact will be far worse if it goes on longer. Multiple sources have confirmed that the ransomware attack was caused by a cyber-criminal gang called DarkSide, who infiltrated Colonial's network on Thursday and took almost 100GB of data hostage. After seizing the data, the hackers locked the data on some computers and servers, demanding a ransom on Friday. If it is not paid, they are threatening to leak it onto the internet.
